Cole, Carpenter send Yanks over Red Sox 13-2; Sale hurt AP
NEW YORK (AP) Gerrit Cole hardly believes he's solved pitching to Rafael Devers. At least he doesn't have to worry about quieting teammate Matt Carpenter's bat.
The rest of the Yankees are satisfied with concluding a memorable first half with two decisive wins over their longtime rival following their worst slump of the season.
Cole brushed back Devers and struck out 12, Carpenter drove in three more runs and the Yankees pounded the Red Sox 13-2 Sunday after Boston ace Chris Sale broke his left pinkie finger in the first inning.
''I don't think I figured him out,'' Cole said of Devers, who has been a thorn in the ace's side. ''I think I just executed the pitches that I wanted to execute today, and I think we sequenced better than we did last time.''
The Yankees reached double-digit runs for the 16th time - no other team has more than 10 such games - and cruised into the All-Star break with a major league-best record of 64-28. Their 64 wins matched the 2018 Astros for third-most prior to the break since the All-Star Game began in 1933.
New York outscored Boston 27-3 in the final two games of the series after losing five of six games, a stretch that included three extra-inning defeats.
''Great job by them,'' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. ''Been a little bit of a rough week obviously. To answer last night and today with two pretty emphatic victories, you want to roll into the break feeling good.''
Cole (9-2) dusted Devers off the plate with a low, 99 mph fastball on his first pitch to the third baseman after allowing two homers to him July 7 in Boston. Devers glared at Cole from the dirt, then struck out swinging at a high fastball.
Cole allowed two runs and three hits over seven innings for his fourth straight win. He also got his 13th career game of double-digit strikeouts and no walks, two behind Randy Johnson for the most ever.
Aaron Judge singled twice and finished the first half with a major league-leading 33 homers, tied with Roger Maris for the franchise record before the break. Judge reached 33 homers in 89 games while Maris hit 33 in his first 83 games in 1961 on his way to breaking Babe Ruth's single-season record.
Judge, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu were hit by pitches after Cole knocked down Devers. LeMahieu was in considerable pain after being hit in the left elbow during the eighth inning and left the game, but Boone said there wasn't an injury concern and no intent by Boston's pitchers.
Carpenter had an RBI groundout in a three-run first inning and added a two-run double in an eight-run fourth. Carpenter drove in 10 runs over the final two games of the first half and has 34 RBIs in 31 games since joining the Yankees on May 26.
''It's great when it's on your team, I'll tell you that,'' Cole said of Carpenter, who was 14 for 38 with four homers when the two faced each other frequently for Pittsburgh and St. Louis. ''I've been watching that for a long time, the first half of my career, and I've been on the wrong side of that quite a bit.''
Tim Locastro hit a two-run homer off Jake Diekman in the fourth. On the one-year anniversary of suffering a torn ACL in his right knee crashing into a wall in foul territory against Boston, Locastro went 3 for 5 and stole two bases.
It was Locastro's third career three-hit game and it earned the speedy outfielder the team's postgame wrestling championship belt for the first time.
''It took me a year to get that,'' Locastro said.
LeMahieu and Judge started New York's big inning with RBI singles and then scored on Carpenter's double.
Aaron Hicks hit a pair of RBI singles, including the hit that fractured Sale's left pinkie. Sale yelled in pain and exited after attempting to field Hicks' 106.7 mph liner.
''Soon as I hit the ground, I looked down, the finger is gone,'' Sale said. ''It sucks.''
Joey Gallo tacked on a two-run homer after entering as defensive replacement in the seventh.
Sale (0-1) was making his second start since returning from a fractured right rib that he sustained working out on his own during the major league lockout.
Devers went 0 for 3 after homering on the first pitch he saw in the previous two games.
Rookie Jeter Downs hit a two-run homer off Cole in the third and also singled. The homer was his first in the majors.
The Red Sox concluded an inconsistent first half with their sixth loss in seven games and finished the first half on a 6-14 slide, dropping 16 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. Before slumping since June 27, Boston won 19 of 23 games.
Sale allowed three runs and two hits in 2/3 of an inning. After Sale exited, the Red Sox used every reliever except Austin Davis.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: LHP Rich Hill (left knee sprain) threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday.
Yankees: RHP Ron Marinaccio (right shoulder inflammation) struck out two and threw 23 pitches in his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 3.34 ERA) is expected to start the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park against Toronto on Friday.
Yankees: Head to Houston for a day-night doubleheader Thursday made necessary because the lockout postponed their originally scheduled season-opening road trip.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox’ Chris Sale fractures little finger after taking liner to pitching hand against Yankees By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 17, 2022, 2:11 p.m.
NEW YORK — Chris Sale exited the Red Sox’ 13-2 loss to the Yankees Sunday in the top of the first inning with a fractured left fifth finger after the lefthanded starter was struck on his pitching hand by a comebacker off the bat of Yankees’ outfielder Aaron Hicks that registered at 106.7 miles per hour.
Sale fell to the grass before immediately leaving the field, going underneath the tunnel and heading to the clubhouse. Sale’s pinky finger appeared out of place as he left the mound.
The team later announced Sale had suffered a fracture of his left pinky finger.
Sale was just in his second game back after missing the majority of the first half of the season with a right rib cage fracture. Sale missed all of the 2020 season and made just nine starts in 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
“This is almost a bigger blow than the other ones, because it’s unexpected,” Sale said afterward in the visitors’ clubhouse at Yankee Stadium.
Sale will see a hand specialist either Sunday evening or Monday in Boston. He expressed cautious optimism that he will pitch again this season, even throwing out a possible time frame.
“Four to six weeks, is when to get active again, moving around a little bit,” Sale said. “I’ll see the hand specialist and just go with what he says.”
Sale said he immediately knew his left pinky was broken after looking down at it.
“I hit the ground, I see my finger underneath my ring finger and I go ‘Here goes more time,’” he said. “That’s the first thing that went through my head.”
When Sale was escorted off the field by manager Alex Cora and team’s medical staff, the Sox were trailing, 3-0. Sale was replaced by reliever Hirokazu Sawamura, who allowed one hit and one walk in a scoreless inning and was the first of eight relievers the Sox trotted out of the bullpen to piece together the remaining 7⅓ innings.
Sale returned to the dugout with his finger in a splint and a wrap around it, and he watched the game with his teammates.
A bright spot
Jeter Downs provided the only bright spot in what turned out to be a dark day for the Red Sox when he belted his first belted his first career home run against Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole in the top of the third inning. Downs went 2 for 3 and his 2-RBI homer helped the Sox pull within 3-2.
“It’s a blessing,” Downs said. “I definitely wish it would have come on a better day but everything happens for a reason.”
On his approach, Downs added: “I was just trying to be on time. The last few days I’ve kind of been late. I was just trying to be on time and get a good pitch to hit. I got a good one and put a pretty decent swing on it and it speaks for itself.”
The team gave Downs the silent treatment before the club’s signature cart ride following a homer.
Downs doubled off Cole in the sixth, collecting two of the Sox’ four hits against the Yankee ace.
“He put together good at-bats than the last few days,” Cora said. “He’s still developing. And today he controlled the strike zone and had some good swings and hit the ball out of the ballpark. It was a good one for him.”
Works in progress
Lefthanded pitcher Rich Hill (left knee sprain) threw a bullpen Saturday. Righthander Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) threw a bullpen Sunday. Cora said both pitchers are trending in the right direction, but will not pitch the first time through the rotation after the All-Star break . . . Franchy Cordero struck out three times Sunday, giving him 28 strikeouts in his last 53 plate appearances in the month of July . . . Nate Eovaldi will draw the first starting assignment out of the break for the Red Sox against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 22 at Fenway Park.

Red Sox look for guys to 'step up' after inconsistent 1st half July 17th, 2022 Bill Ladson
Bill Ladson @ladsonbill24
NEW YORK -- If the season ended today, the Red Sox would be out of the Wild Card race. After a 13-2 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Boston sits two games behind Toronto for the third AL Wild Card spot.
The day got off to a bad start for the Red Sox when left-hander Chris Sale left in the first inning with a left fifth finger fracture after he was hit on his left hand by a line drive hit by Aaron Hicks.
“You think more about the person instead of the player,” manager Alex Cora said. “He has been through a lot. He was ready to compete. Now we have to wait. It’s not about the baseball player.
“I talked to him a little bit. He has been through a lot of obstacles throughout the journey the last few years. I don’t want to say disappointed, but kind of like, 'Here we go again.' That was my reaction. Here is a guy that has worked hard to get back. Another obstacle in his road.”
After Sale left the game, Cora used eight relievers who allowed a combined 10 runs in 7 1/3 innings.
“We didn’t make pitches. We are short. But we had guys who have done it before,” Cora said. “We had to use our high-leverage guys in the middle of the game because we were running out of pitchers. We have to be better, bottom line. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Yankees or whomever. We have to play better baseball.”
The Red Sox didn’t get much out of their offense on Sunday, either. They collected four hits off right-hander Gerrit Cole, who pitched seven innings, and struck out 16 times without recording a walk on the day. Their only damage came in the third inning, when Jeter Downs hit his first career home run, a two run shot that made it a 3-2 game.
Before the game, Cora talked about how he wanted the offense to improve after the All-Star break. As Cora pointed out, the big three of Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts have done their part, but Cora hopes to see the rest of the guys step up in the batter’s box.
“It’s a combination of what Cole did, us expanding [the strike zone] a little bit,” Cora said. “There is a lot of frustration the last few days. We are not putting the ball in play, taking some close pitches and all of that. It was a bad two days. Like I told them, go ahead and [hang with] the families, be responsible and be ready Friday [against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park].”
During the month of July, the Red Sox are hitting .234. In comparison, their worst month of the year came during April when they hit .225.
“We’ve been very inconsistent offensively during the first part of the season,” Cora said. “We hit our stride [sometimes] and then lately -- injuries or not, we should be better than that.
“Like I have been saying all along, the three guys have been amazing throughout the first part of the season. We need more. We need other guys to step up, get good at-bats, finish at-bats and all that stuff. We haven’t done that, so far, this season.
Asked if the Red Sox need help from the outside, Cora said, “We need help from the people here. It really doesn’t matter. We can talk about outside or whatever. The guys that are here … they have to be better.”
