BOSTON — Bobby Dalbec blasted two homers and drove in a season-high five runs but it wasn’t enough.
The Red Sox failed to hold a late one-run lead and lost 7-6 to the Guardians here at Fenway Park on Wednesday.
Boston dropped to under .500 (49-50).
Franchy Cordero made three errors, including a throwing error in the eighth that allowed Nolan Jones to reach second base after his infield single.
Jones scored the tying run on Myles Straw’s RBI double off John Schreiber.
Josh Naylor’s go-ahead solo homer off Tanner Houck put Cleveland ahead 7-6 in the ninth.
Cordero also made two errors on the same play during Cleveland’s three-run second inning.
Dalbec’s 417-foot two-run blast in the second inning cut the deficit to 3-2. He then put Boston ahead 6-5 with a 397-foot two-run home run to center field in the sixth.
It marked Dalbec’s first multi-homer game this season and the fourth of his career.
The 27-year-old — who has 10 homers this season after belting 25 last year — also delivered a sac fly to right field in the fourth inning.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched 6 innings, allowing five runs (three earned runs), nine hits and no walks while striking out one.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 2h #RedSox made a defensive change in the OF -- Rob Refsnyder to RF, Jackie Bradley Jr. to CF.
Unfortunately, they did not make a change at 1B -- Franchy Cordero with his third error of the night. Cleveland with the tying run aboard.
Alex Speier @alexspeier · 2h Cordero now has 7 errors at 1B - tied for 5th most in MLB. But his 5 have come in fewer than 300 innings - meaning an average of 1 for roughly every 44 innings, far and away the highest error frequency among 1Bs with 100+ innings.
Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 1h He's the modern Dick Stuart -- Dr. Strangeglove.
But Stuart at least had the decency to post a .900 OPS twice, hit 20+ doubles three times and 23+ home runs six times.
This is beyond reason.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 1h Tanner Houck has the 9th in a 6-6 game.
Cleveland with 3-4-5 due -- Ramirez, Naylor, Reyes. #RedSox would be 8-9-1 with Downs, Plawecki and Davis on the bench.
Josh Naylor with a drive to left and a big bat flip about 60 feet down the line. He knew it.
Solo home run to the Monster Seats. It's 7-6 in the 9th. #RedSox
First home run allowed by Tanner Houck since May 15 -- 22 games, 112 at-bats. He's now on the hook.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 1h CLE 7 BOS 6 Final
#RedSox are 49-50. They're under .500 for the first time since the morning of June 5.
Franchy Cordero scored three runs with his feet and gave away four with his glove. Tanner Houck hung a slider that Josh Naylor drove for the winning homer.
Brutal.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 1h One more note on Cordero: I believe his 3 errors tie a record for one game by a Sox first baseman, something previously done 8 times. He and Mo Vaughn (1993) are the only Sox 1Bs since 1945 with three errors in one game.
The Red Sox blow an eighth-inning lead en route to a 7-6 loss. They're 49-50 for the year. They are assured of not winning their series against Cleveland (best they can do is split) - meaning 7 series in July without a single series win.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 3h They should send Franchy Cordero out to first base with a cricket bat or a jai alai cesta. It can't be any worse than a glove at this point.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 2h Make that three errors on Cordero. Repeat of the same bad play he made in the second innings.
At this point probably should catch Plawecki and play Vazquez at first. Or put a glove on a folding chair and hope for the best.

Brian Barrett @itsbrianbarrett · 1h Franchy has 8 errors in 298 innings at 1B
Josh Bell is last among 1B with 9 errors … he’s played 847 innings
Another bad loss?
I guess having a major league 1B matters

Injuries & Moves: Hill to begin Minors rehab July 27th, 2022
July 27: LHP Rich Hill to begin Minors rehab on Thursday Originally, Hill was going to open a rehab assignment on Wednesday. But the Red Sox decided to be conservative and push it to Thursday, when the lefty will pitch for Double-A Portland in Hartford, Conn. If Hill winds up making just one rehab start, he could be back with the Red Sox for the start of their road trip in Houston next week. The lefty suffered a left knee sprain while pitching at Wrigley Field on July 1. He is 4-4 with a 4.20 ERA in 15 starts this season.
3B Rafael Devers (right hamstring inflammation) Expected return: Early August Devers continues to make encouraging strides, with all signs pointing to his return on Aug. 2, the first day he is eligible to come off the injured list.
“Better. He’s moving better," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "He took grounders today, hit in the cage, so he’s progressing. I think Raffy will be OK right away.” (Last updated: July 27)
2B Trevor Story (right hand contusion) Expected return: Early August It has been slow going for Story in his return, but manager Alex Cora reported July 27 that he was "feeling better." Story has been increasing his volume of swings in recent days. Cora said the club hasn't plotted out when he could start a Minor League rehab assignment. (Last updated: July 27)
INF/OF Christian Arroyo (left groin strain) Expected return: August Arroyo, who has bounced around the infield and outfield this season, started his Minor League rehab assignment for Double-A Portland on July 27. The right-handed hitter was injured July 8 against the Yankees. Arroyo is hitting .224 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 42 games this season. (Last updated: July 27)

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Rafael Devers, others working their way back from the injured list By Jayna Bardahl Globe Correspondent,Updated July 27, 2022, 7:58 p.m.
Rafael Devers could be activated as soon as he is eligible on Aug. 2, said manager Alex Cora before Wednesday night’s 7-6 loss to the Guardians in the third game of the series.
Devers was placed on the 10-day injured list July 23 with “right hamstring inflammation,” but on Wednesday Cora said the All-Star third baseman took ground balls and was batting in the cage.
“He’s progressing. I think Raffy will be OK right away,” said Cora.
Cora said a rehab assignment likely won’t be needed for Devers in another subtle glimpse of hope on a slowly progressing — and lengthy — injured list.
Trevor Story swung the bat and was “feeling better.” The team has not discussed a rehab assignment for Story, who was placed on the IL with a right hand contusion retroactive to July 14.
“Hopefully, he can get over the hump,” Cora said.
Lefthander Rich Hill was in the dugout. Hill was supposed to start in a rehab assignment, but instead stayed at Fenway for the evening.
“Where we are at roster wise and all that stuff, it just makes sense, just in case something happens, then we’ll make other decisions,” Cora said. “Hopefully everything goes well here today and he can go pitch there tomorrow.”
Christian Arroyo went 1 for 1 with 1 RBI and a pair of walks as the designated hitter in a rehab assignment with Double A Portland, which scored a 9-4 rout over the host Hartford Yard Goats. He will play second base Thursday.
Matt Barnes pitched on Tuesday in Portland, and will go back-to-back Thursday and Friday.
Kiké Hernandez will start to swing the bat Saturday. Dalbec impresses at third
In Devers’s absence, Bobby Dalbec is shaping up as the third base starter.
“That’s his natural position,” Cora said. “He’s a great third baseman. His instincts, the way he moves, his range.”
Dalbec has rotated starts at first and third throughout the season. Cora said adjusting to the different angle from the two positions can be tricky, but he has been impressed with Dalbec.
“Yesterday he made a play that just reminds you how good he is over there and you can see him playing with more confidence,” Cora said.
Dalbec was equally impressive at the plate in the loss. He went 2 for 3 with a season-high 5 RBIs, blasting a pair of two-run homers, the second of which gave the Red Sox a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning Happy reunion
Outfielder Jaylin Davis joined the Red Sox from the Giants in April and was happy to see a familiar face in the clubhouse.
Davis and Red Sox hitting coach Peter Fatse were together in 2019, when Davis played for Minnesota’s Triple A team and Fatse was the Twins’ minor league hitting coordinator.
“Just connecting back with him, he knows my swing, and it’s been fun,” Davis said.
The reunion couldn’t come at a better time as Davis’s main focus since joining the Sox has been on his hitting. Related: Harsh reality of their dire situation may dictate what moves — if any — the Red Sox make at the trade deadline
“Honestly, just to be more consistent at the plate. I’m kind of working on tweaking some things with my swing,” said Davis.
Davis said the move to the Sox from the Giants was the right move for his career. Keeping an eye on Casas
First base has been a shaky position in the Red Sox infield, and chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Triston Casas could be an option.
Casas, the second-ranked Boston prospect, seemed promising when the Sox drafted him in the first round in 2018. Since then, Casas has battled a right ankle injury, restricting him to playing in just 40 games for Triple A Worcester.
“At the time he went down we all felt like he was showing a lot of progress. He was driving the ball more, a lot of good things with his time there but still definitely a lot of work to do,” Bloom said. “He’s going to need to pick up where he left off.”
Bloom said Casas would “not directly” impact potential trade discussions at the position.
“We want to do what’s right for him. We’ve seen down the stretch that there have been guys we’ve called on probably a little sooner than we wanted to,” Bloom said. “I think he’ll be better from the experience but it’s not something that you like to do because circumstances force you to.” Crawford to pitch finale
Kutter Crawford will start in Thursday’s series finale against Cleveland …The rotation for the Sox’ next series against Milwaukee is Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, and Josh Winckowski … Fenway Park held its second Puerto Rican Heritage Celebration on Wednesday night. Puerto Rico native Monica Puig, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in women’s singles tennis, threw out the first pitch.

Boston Red Sox’s Franchy Cordero on costly eighth inning error, ‘I should have taken a little bit more time’

BOSTON — Red Sox first baseman Franchy Cordero charged in and to his right to field Nolan Jones’ 68.8 mph grounder to begin the eighth inning.
His off-balance throw sailed wide and over the head of reliever John Schreiber who was covering the first base bag. The ball rolled into the Red Sox dugout, allowing Jones to advance to second base.
“I think I should have taken a little bit more time on the second play and tried to under(hand) toss to the pitcher but I threw it away and that’s it,” Cordero said through translator Carlos Villoria Benítez.
Jones scored the tying run with one out on Myles Straw’s RBI double to right field. The Guardians took the lead in the ninth inning on Josh Naylor’s solo homer against Tanner Houck.
Cordero made three errors (two throwing, one fielding) in the game and the Red Sox lost 7-6 to Cleveland here at Fenway Park on Wednesday. They dropped below .500 (49-50) for the first time since June 4.
“I was trying to make a play but those throws got away from me,” Cordero said. “Just keep working.”
Cordero made two errors on the same play during Cleveland’s three-run second inning. He dropped Jones’ 30.7 mph groundball. He picked it up and then fired it over the head of Nathan Eovaldi who was covering first base.
“We didn’t play good defense,” manager Alex Cora said. “At the end, that’s the result. You give the opposition more than 27 outs at this level, you’re going to pay the price. ... It’s been going on for a while here. Defensively, we were really good for a while. And we haven’t been good the last two and a half weeks.”
Cordero is relatively new to first base. He never played there until during the 2021 season. He has made just 47 starts there in the majors.
Cora said Cordero should not have thrown the ball to first after dropping it in the second inning.
“The first one, I talked to him,” Cora said. “I said, ‘As soon as you drop it, just don’t go to the next play because it has to be a great play. You’re going to your back and a lot of bad things can happen.’ He’s still learning the position. He hasn’t played too much at first base. He’s been better than last year, but obviously there’s going to be plays that it’s the first time it happens or he’s gonna rush to do it. It’s just tough. ... When you don’t play good defense, this is what happens.”

McKenzie 7-6/3.11
Crawford 2-3/4.50
Guardians pursue series win over sliding Red Sox FLM
While the Cleveland Guardians are playing well enough to put them into a moderate buyer's market, every rough performance may put the Boston Red Sox closer to selling off pieces by Tuesday's trade deadline.
With seven wins in their past 10 games, the Guardians are within 2 1/2 of the final American League wild-card spot. They will look to gain more ground in the race Thursday night in the finale of a four-game road series against the scuffling Red Sox.
Cleveland opened the series with a 3-1 loss on Monday but provided strong responses in the next two games. The Guardians earned an 8-3 win on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Myles Straw hit a tying double in the eighth inning and Josh Naylor socked a tiebreaking homer off Tanner Houck in the ninth to give Cleveland a 7-6 victory.
Naylor's homer occurred hours after ESPN reported that Cleveland was willing to listen to offers for ace Shane Bieber along with fellow controllable starters Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale.
The Guardians are hoping for more positive contributions from several regulars. Naylor bashed his sixth homer in his past 20 games. Straw wound up with a pair of RBI doubles, giving him a .345 average (19-for-55) over his past 16 games -- a major upgrade considering he was hitting .194 before that stretch.
"I love everyone here," Naylor said on Bally Sports Cleveland. "I think we all love each other. It's genuine in that locker room. Everybody is cheering on each other and thriving on each other's success. It's a ballclub you want to be a part of."
Boston is under .500 for the first time since it was 27-28 on June 4. The Red Sox are now 4 1/2 games out of a playoff spot after committing three errors on Wednesday, all by first baseman Franchy Cordero.
The Red Sox went 20-6 in June and were 47-39 after splitting a four-game series with the New York Yankees from July 7-10. Since then, the Red Sox are on an ugly 2-11 slide that has seen them get outscored 109-42 while losing Trevor Story and Rafael Devers to injuries.
Boston's defense has struggled of late, as typified by Cordero on Wednesday. During the slide, the Red Sox have been charged with 16 errors and allowed 11 unearned runs.
"We didn't play good defense," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "At the end, that's the result. You give the opposition more than 27 outs at this level, you're going to pay the price. It's been going on for a while here. Defensively, we were really good for a while. We haven't been good for the last 2 1/2 weeks."
Cleveland's Triston McKenzie (7-6, 3.11 ERA) will make his final start on Thursday before celebrating his 25th birthday next Tuesday. McKenzie heads into his first career outing against Boston with a 3-0 record and an 0.34 ERA in his past four starts since getting shelled for seven runs by the Minnesota Twins on June 27.
McKenzie pitched 24 scoreless innings before allowing a run in the fourth inning Saturday, when he pitched 5 2/3 innings and did not get a decision in Cleveland's 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Boston's starters are 0-12 with a 7.65 ERA this month, and the Red Sox hope rookie Kutter Crawford (2-3, 4.50) can end the skid. Crawford is 1-1 with a 2.82 ERA in his past four outings and owns a 3.81 ERA in five starts this season.
Crawford last pitched on Saturday in a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, when he allowed three runs in six innings.
Crawford will face Cleveland for the second time. He made his major league debut against Cleveland last Sept. 5 and allowed five runs in two-plus innings during an 11-5 home loss.
