My wife, who knows nothing about baseball, saw the Duran missed ball both in the twilight and the sun, and said, “aww poor guy. Maybe he has eyesight issues. Seriously.”

Jarren Duran’s adventurous day in center costs Red Sox in 13-5 loss to Royals; Boston loses 3 of 4 to lowly Kansas City

On paper, four games against a lowly Royals team looked like a great opportunity for the Red Sox to pick up some ground in the playoff race. In that sense, then, Boston’s weekend can be counted as a missed opportunity.
Jarren Duran had an adventurous day in center field as the Red Sox dropped Sunday’s series finale, 13-5, and ended up losing three of four to the Royals, who even after a good weekend are 44-65.
MJ Melendez’s three-run homer off Kutter Crawford in the fifth inning -- which came after Duran couldn’t catch a Nate Eaton fly ball -- broke things open, then the Royals added six runs in the eighth inning in a sloppy game played on a brutally hot day at Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City opened the scoring in the third when starter Crawford balked, allowing Michael Massey to score. MJ Melendez then made it 2-0 with an RBI single to center.
In the fifth, Massey walked before Eaton lifted a ball to center that Duran could not corral. The next batter, Melendez, broke things open with a three-run shot that put the Royals up 5-0. Crawford, who entered with a 2.72 ERA dating back to June 12, posted his worst outing in some time. He allowed five earned runs on five hits in five innings while recording four strikeouts.
Rafael Devers made it a 5-1 game with a solo shot in the sixth and Tommy Pham brought the Sox back within two runs with a two-run, 437-foot blast to left field in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Duran’s struggles really hurt his team.
To lead off, Eaton lifted a routine fly ball to center that Duran lost in the sun, allowing Eaton to advance to third for a triple. The next batter, Kyle Isbel, hit a deep fly ball that glanced off Duran’s glove on the warning track and went for an RBI triple that made it 6-3. A Melendez sacrifice fly -- on a Duran diving catch -- made it 7-3. Duran then appeared to be going back-and-forth with fans in the bleachers and had to be momentarily held back by left fielder Alex Verdugo. Once Duran got back to the dugout, manager Alex Cora sat next to him on the bench and appeared to try to console him. Kansas City really broke things open in the eighth with a six-run inning. Darwinzon Hernandez entered in relief and walked four batters, including the first three he faced. After Massey made it 9-3 with a two-run single, Isbel hit a two-run double off Austin Davis to put the Royals up eight. A Melendez sacrifice fly -- good for his sixth RBI of the day -- made it 12-3 and Bobby Witt Jr. made it a 10-run game with an RBI single.
Duran made it 13-4 with an RBI groundout in the ninth. Pham’s third RBI came on an RBI single that made it 13-5. But that’s as close as the Red Sox would get in the final inning.
With the loss, the Red Sox fell to 54-56. They have lost four of six after a three-game winning streak and finished their road trip at 3-4. Boston is 10-21 in its last 31 games.
Braves up next after off day
The Red Sox are off Monday before beginning a six-game homestand during which Atlanta (2 games), Baltimore (1) and the Yankees (3) will come to Fenway Park. They’ll start a two-game series against the defending champions Tuesday. Here are the pitching probables:
Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET -- RHP Charlie Morton (5-5, 4.09 ERA) vs. LHP Rich Hill (4-5, 4.52 ERA)
Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. ET -- RHP Kyle Wright (13-5, 3.22 ERA) vs. RHP Nick Pivetta (8-8, 4.51 ERA)

Duran was quite the clown today but dear jesus cut the cord on Hernandez his line today: 0.0ip/1/5/5/4bb 23-7 I'm not sure why they don't just demote him. We're short a lefty without Strahm, but Hernandez is not the solution.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Balk another part of a rough start for Red Sox rookie Kutter Crawford By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated August 7, 2022, 9:29 p.m.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Red Sox recalled rookie righthander Kutter Crawford from Triple A Worcester on July 4. He was 2-1 with a 2.38 earned run average in the next six games he pitched, securing a place in the rotation.
That came crashing down on Sunday. Crawford’s first balk in the majors contributed to his allowing five runs over five innings in a 13-5 loss against the Kansas City Royals.
In a scoreless game, Michael Massey doubled leading off the third inning for Kansas City. With one out and Massey on third, Crawford hit Kyle Isbel with a cutter. A ground ball could have gotten him out of the inning. But Crawford stepped toward third and threw. Rafael Devers was well off the bag and had to lunge for the ball. A balk was called.
Massey scored and Isbel was awarded second. MJ Melendez then singled to drive in Isbel.
Third base umpire Junior Valentine told Sox manager Alex Cora he called the balk because Devers was so far off the bag. Crew chief Bill Welke later told Crawford that Devers needed to be in tagging distance.
A bigger issue was the first-pitch curveball Crawford hung to Melendez that he crushed for a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
“They were coming out swinging early,” Crawford said. “He put a good swing on it.”
Crawford (3-4) allowed a season-high five runs over five innings.
“I did some pretty good things today. I threw a pretty good splitter, so that’s come along,” he said. “Little bump in the road, we’re going to learn from it and keep working.”
The Sox plan to start lefthander Rich Hill and righthander Nick Pivetta in the series against the Atlanta Braves that starts Tuesday. Righthander Josh Winckowski has the lockout makeup game against Baltimore on Thursday night.
Nate Eovaldi is scheduled to face the Yankees on Friday. Crawford would slot in on Saturday with Michael Wacha possible for Sunday depending on the results of his minor league rehabilitation game on Tuesday.
Caution with Schreiber
Righthanded reliever John Schreiber has been a revelation this season, posting a 1.90 earned run average over 41 appearances and 42⅔ innings.
But he seems to be getting worn down.
Schreiber was on the mound in the seventh inning when Jarren Duran lost a popup in the sun. That wasn’t his fault, but the next batter, Isbel, hammered a high fastball to the gap in right that Duran nearly caught and went for a triple.
Melendez followed with a 108-mile-per-hour liner that Duran dove to catch and Schreiber was taken out of the game.
He has given up five runs on 10 hits over 10 innings in his last eight appearances.
Counting seven appearances in Triple A early in the season, Schreiber has worked 55 innings. His high as a professional was 79⅓ innings in 2019 and the Sox have 52 games remaining.
“It’s been good. But we’ve got to be careful. Usage is getting up there,” Cora said. “I don’t want to say he’s struggling, but fastball command has been off the last week. It would be good for other guys to step up.”
Schreiber has gotten four or more outs in four of his last six outings.
Left turn
The Sox opened the season with three lefties in the bullpen — Austin Davis, Jake Diekman, and Matt Strahm. Now, with Diekman having been traded and Strahm on the injured list, they have Davis and Darwinzon Hernandez.
It’s not working well. Davis has allowed 11 earned runs on 13 hits over 8⅓ innings in his last eight appearances.
Hernandez has been even worse. He entered Sunday’s game in the eighth inning and walked the first three batters he faced on 17 pitches. Then came a two-run single and another walk.
In his last three outings, Hernandez has allowed 13 earned runs on 11 hits and seven walks over 3⅓ innings.
“He needs to get better,” Cora said. “He did a good job in Triple A and right now these are the two lefties that we have. They have to keep working.”
Cora said the Sox would “mix and match” if a lefthander was needed to face two tough lefthanded hitters in a row. He mentioned righthander Hirokazu Sawamura as a possibility in that situation.
“There’s nobody like, ‘This is a guy that is going to get lefties out,’ It all depends who the hitter is,” Cora said.
Catching on
Reese McGuire is 5 of 11 in three games since being obtained from the White Sox on Aug. 1 for Diekman . . . The Sox are 2-5 at Kauffman Stadium the last two seasons. The Sox were 6-0 from 2018-19 . . . Tommy Pham’s two-run homer in the seventh inning was his first since June 30. That ended the second-longest drought of his career.

Alex Cora, Red Sox To Stick With Darwinzon Hernandez Amid Struggles
Hernandez has a 22.24 ERA with the Red Sox this season
by Keagan Stiefel
The Boston Red Sox are stuck between a rock and a hard place with relief pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez.
Since his recall on Thursday, Hernandez has been thrust into game action on two separate occasions, allowing a total of nine earned runs in two-plus innings pitched for the Red Sox. The 25-year-old faced a total of 15 batters over that span, walking (six) as many as he’s retired.
Despite the clear struggles, Red Sox manager Alex Cora says the team will stick with the lefty.
“Fastball was good, velocity-wise, but control and command. He needs to get better,” Cora said after Boston’s 13-5 loss Sunday in Kansas City, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage. “He did a good job in Triple-A, and right now those are the two lefties we have. We’ve talked about it with (Austin Davis) and Darwinzon, and we’ve got to figure it out. They’re going to be a part of this, for now.
“We went from three (left-handed relievers) or whatever we had at one point, to this. And they know it, they’ve just got to keep working. But I think one of the things, as a pitching staff, we’ve got to be better at throwing strikes. This started at Chicago, the first game of the series against the Cubs we walked 11 that day, and from there on we’ve been walking a lot of guys, and at this level like I’ve always said, you keep the line moving they’re going to make you pay.”
Command has been Hernandez’s issue, not just in this stint in the big leagues, but throughout the season. Hernandez has a WHIP of 3.53 — more than double the next closest Red Sox pitcher. The Venezuelan native missed a chunk of this season following meniscus surgery, but Cora said that hasn’t hindered his performance.
“They just checked on him, he’s OK,” Cora said. “We don’t think it’s something physical, the stuff is still good, the delivery is still clean. So, like I said, they checked on him and he’s OK.”

Red Sox Notes: How Alex Cora Reacted To Jarren Duran Outfield Plays
'There's nothing he can do'
by Sean T. McGuire
Red Sox center fielder Jarren Duran was on the wrong end of blinding sunlight Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, and it ultimately played a role in Boston’s 13-5 loss to the Royals.
Duran was not credited with an error on either of the two plays that resulted in back-to-back triples, but the one from Nate Eaton in the seventh inning gave Kansas City a leadoff man at third base immediately after Boston cut into its deficit in the top of the frame. Duran then was unable to make a grab at the wall as the ball hit off his glove and escaped his bare hand all while Kyle Isbel earned the Royals a second straight triple.
“Obviously a tough one for Jarren. That ball is in the sun. It’s one of those, there’s nothing he can do,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage.
“You try to get the angle, you saw it right right away. He put the hand up. The only thing probably, it’s not urgency, I don’t think urgency is the right word to say. It’s like when you’re in danger you just scream for help, right? So your teammates they go out there and try to help them,” Cora added. “But there’s nothing you can do there. He turned around, he put his hand up and he barely missed it. He didn’t catch it.”
Despite Duran’s troubles Sunday, Cora indicated the Red Sox will continue to ride with him in center.
“I mean, he’s our centerfielder right now. So, you know, we trust him,” Cora said. “Here’s a kid that is part of what we’re trying to accomplish and we’re gonna keep rolling with him.”
Here are more notes from Red Sox-Royals on Sunday:
— Kutter Crawford had been one of Boston’s most reliable starters, but was far from his best against the Royals.
“Yeah, they put some good swings,” Cora said of the Royals scoring five runs on five hits against Crawford, including a three-run home run by MJ Melendez. “Obviously, we didn’t want to throw that breaking ball there. We wanted to expand and then see how far, get Melendez to chase pitches in a situation. It didn’t happen. Not as sharp, but still he competed, which is a good thing. It’s just that pitch, probably he wants to back. He (wanted) to bounce down one and he hung it.”
— Darwinzon Hernandez recently was called up from Triple-A Worcester, but didn’t help himself yet again Sunday. Hernandez allowed five runs on four walks and one hit without recording an out in the eighth inning. The Royals scored six runs in the eighth to put the series on ice. Hernandez allowed four runs in each of his prior two appearances in two and 1 1/3 innings, respectively.
Cora spoke about Hernandez after the game.
“Fastball was good, velocity-wise. But control, command. He needs to get better,” Cora said of Hernandez. “He did a good job in Triple-A and right now these other two lefties that we have. We talked about it with (Austin Davis) and Darwinzon. We got to figure out. They’re gonna be part of this, for now.
“But I think one of the things as a pitching staff is we got to be better at throwing strikes,” Cora added.
— The trainer went out to check on Hernandez during the eighth inning, but Cora confirmed his knee was OK.
