Boston Red Sox (53-53) vs. Kansas City Royals (41-64)
The Boston Red Sox are traveling to the Midwest to take on the Kansas City Royals in the opening of a four-game series at Kauffman Stadium. The series starts on Thursday, August 4, and the Red Sox, who are still alive in the postseason race, are looking to return home victoriously.
These American League rivals will meet for the first time this season after facing seven times in 2021. Boston won that series 5-2. The Red Sox are -135 favorites in this one, while the total is set at 8.5 runs.
Red Sox clinched the series against the Astros The Boston Red Sox closed the first half of the season with ten losses in 13 games and added seven more defeats in the opening nine games of the second half. However, they responded with three wins out of the past four, and surprisingly won the series against the Houston Astros on the road. Boston has a lot of injured players at the moment, but it is still in the chase for the wildcard.
The Reds Sox did lose the last game 6-1 to the Astros as their offense couldn’t get it going and scored the lone run in the 9th through Xander Bogaerts’ home run. Rich Hill pitched for just 3.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with one strikeout and no walks. Boston is still playing without Trevor Story and Kike Hernandez, while new addition Eric Hosmer and J.D. Martinez are questionable to feature on Thursday.
Nick Pivetta (8-8) will get his 22nd start of the year when he faces the Royals. The 29-year-old right-hander owns a 4.47 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and a 114/44 K/BB ratio across 118.2 innings of work. Pivetta started two times against Kansas City last season and registered a disappointing 8.68 ERA in 9.1 innings.
Royals lost the series to the White Sox The Kansas City Royals opened a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on the road with a victory, but then lost the next two and dropped to 14th place in the AL. Only the Oakland Athletics have a worse record right now.
Kansas City, who sent star Whit Merrifield to the Toronto Blue Jays and is getting accustomed to life without him, recorded only four hits against Chicago’s starter Lance Lynn and the White Sox’s bullpen. Bobby Witt Jr. blasted a solo homer in the 6th, but that was all from the Royals who suffered a 4-1 loss in the end. Brady Singer (4-4) took a loss after allowing four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 6.0 innings.
Kris Bubic (2-6) will start on the mound for the 17th time this season when the Royals take on the Red Sox. The 24-year-old left-hander will carry a 5.45 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and a 61/39 K/BB ratio over 74.1 innings. Bubic met the Red Sox on two occasions in 2021 but registered a poor 9.45 ERA in 6.2 innings. He showed improvement in July, recording a 3.28 ERA for the month, the best month of his season so far.
Red Sox at Royals Thursday, at 8:10 PM EST Clear According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 89° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 8 MPH wind blowing in in Kansas City at 8:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

Injuries & Moves: Wacha ready for rehab start August 3rd, 2022
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
Aug. 3: RHP Michael Wacha to start at Triple-A Worcester on Thursday Boston's starting rotation is at last starting to get healthy again. Rich Hill made his return against the Astros on Wednesday, and Wacha will make a Minor League rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Worcester. The righty, who got off to a terrific start this season (6-1, 2.69 ERA), has been out with inflammation in his right shoulder. Hill made just one rehab start before his return. It remains to be seen if Wacha will do the same.
Aug. 3: RHP Brayan Bello exits with left groin strain Red Sox manager Alex Cora was looking for length from No. 3 prospect Brayan Bello out of the bullpen for Wednesday's series finale, but those plans were scrapped when he exited with a left groin strain after facing only four batters. Bello gave up two hits and struck out two before walking to the clubhouse. The righty has pitched five times for the Red Sox this season, with the last two of them in relief.
RHP Matt Barnes (right shoulder inflammation) Expected return: Upcoming days Barnes made back-to-back outings for Double-A Portland on July 28-29 and has been in a holding pattern ever since. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said there's a chance Barnes could be added to the roster for the series in Kansas City, which starts Aug. 4. For the Red Sox this season, Barnes has a 7.94 ERA in 20 appearances. (Last updated: Aug. 3)

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox’ Brayan Bello entered in fourth inning and exited in fourth inning with left groin strain By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 3, 2022, 7:19 p.m.
HOUSTON — Rookie righthander Brayan Bello exited Wednesday’s series finale against the Astros with a left groin strain. Bello entered the game in the top of the fourth inning after Rich Hill yielded six runs in just three innings of work.
The plan was for Hill to go at least five and then hand the ball to Bello, hoping he could finish the game with the Sox bullpen on fumes.
But with two on and two outs in the fourth, manager Alex Cora noticed Bello laboring some on the mound.
“Right before the at-bat [against Jeremy Peña] I saw Bello stretching out,” Cora said after the Sox’ 6-1 loss Thursday. “Then he threw two pitches that didn’t do much and after the second one I saw him step back.”
“I felt it a little bit on that last pitch to [Christian] Vázquez,” Bello said. “The following pitches, I started to feel it a little bit more and more. I decided to stop. I hope it’s not that long [that I’m out]. But, honestly, I don’t know how long it’s going to be.”
Alex Cora remembers Vin Scully as ‘amazing’
Cora grew up in the Dodger organization. He was drafted by the club in the third round back in 1996 out of the University of Miami. Cora made his debut in 1998 and, of course, got the chance to rub shoulders with the legendary Dodger broadcaster, Vin Scully, who passed away Tuesday evening at 94 years old.
Cora took the time to remember Scully Wednesday morning prior to the Sox’ series finale loss.
“First of all he was amazing,” Cora said. “Just the way he did it by himself and the voice and the presence and the way he dressed.”
Cora mentioned Scully’s signature introduction to games, “It’s time for Dodger baseball.”
“Growing up in the organization, I loved that,” Cora said.
Scully was always in the clubhouse talking to players, adding that Scully had a way of putting them at ease when they were in slumps.
He also wasn’t afraid to be critical or tell the truth on the broadcast when need be.
A highlight moment of Cora’s career with the Dodgers came in 2004 against the Cubs. Cora put together an 18-pitch at-bat against Matt Clement which ended in a three-run homer. But what people don’t remember, Cora said with a smile, were the two at-bats prior to his homer.
In the first at-bat, Cora flied out against Clement. In the second he flied out again which prompted Scully to offer his opinion over the broadcast.
‘”When you don’t have power and you hit the ball in the air like that, bad things are going to happen,’” Cora remembered Scully saying. “He was basically calling me a bad hitter. And then, boom, I hit a home run. I always remember that. I always go back to that, but the man was special.”
Jason Varitek tutoring Reese McGuire
New Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire has some catching up to do when it comes to learning a pitching staff. It’s August with roughly two months of the season left. Despite time working against him and the Sox, the team is confident McGuire can, in fact, get into a rhythm with the staff because of one key person: game planning coordinator Jason Varitek.
“The Captain has been in the [clubhouse] since Tuesday,” Cora said. “Just relentless. Working and walking Reese the whole thing. Reese is a veteran, too. He worked with some people that used to work here. So we know a lot about Reese and he’ll be fine.”
Varitek sat at one of the circular tables in the clubhouse prior to the game, scouring through information, making sure McGuire is prepared as much as possible.
“It’s just like anything where you get the game plan, you kind of get an understanding of what guys like to do and then once the game starts adjustments can be made,” McGuire said. Jackie Bradley Jr. to the bench
With Tommy Pham now a part of the mix, Jackie Bradley Jr. will be used in a bench role. Alex Verdugo has since shifted to right field, and despite Jarren Duran’s continued struggles (.181 with 36 strikeouts in his last 104 plate appearances plus a minus five in defensive runs saved), Duran will be the Sox everyday center fielder. Verdugo is minus two in defensive runs saved this year. Pham, meanwhile, is a plus-4, meaning the combined starting to outfield is minus-3 … Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) will toss four innings for Triple A Worcester Thursday. James Paxton (Tommy John) took part in an up and down Tuesday. The Sox’ upcoming starters for the Royals series: Nick Pivetta, TBD (likely Josh Winckowski), Nathan Eovaldi, and Kutter Crawford. Royals starters: Kris Bubic, Zack Greinke, Daniel Lynch, and Brad Keller. … There was an unusual sequence leading off the bottom of the third inning as Yordan Alvarez struck out but wasn’t called out. Houston’s designated hitter took a ball from Hill. The next pitch was a called strike. After a foul ball, Hill threw a changeup that was called a strike by umpire Jim Wolf. But the at-bat continued and Alvarez grounded out to first base. Houston manager Dusty Baker admitted he missed it. The Sox noticed it but not in time to protest … Eric Hosmer is expected to make his debut Thursday in Kansas City. He will visit Kansas City for the first time since he left as a free agent following the 2017 season.

Jackie Bradley Jr. designated for assignment by Red Sox By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 4, 2022, 1 hour ago
Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been designated for assignment, according to a league source.
Bradley, who was involved in the offseason trade for Hunter Renfroe which brought the former Sox All-Star and Gold Glove winner back to the Red Sox, hit .210 with a .578 OPS and three homers during his second stint with the Red Sox.
The move means Bradley, 32, is off the team’s 40-man roster — a move that opens a spot for newly acquired first baseman Eric Hosmer, who is expected to join the Sox in Kansas City.
Bradley will be placed on irrevocable waivers and, if unclaimed (likely given that he’s still owed roughly $3 million for the rest of the season), can become a free agent. If he signs with another club, the Sox would be responsible for all but the prorated major league minimum of his remaining salary.
The trade deadline acquisition of Tommy Pham apparently made Bradley expendable, with the Sox choosing to go with Jarren Duran as the everyday center fielder despite his struggles (.181 with 36 strikeouts in his last 104 plate appearances plus a minus five in defensive runs saved). Alex Verdugo, shifted to right field, is minus two in defensive runs saved this year. Pham, meanwhile, is a plus-4, meaning the combined starting to outfield is minus-3

Perez's 3-run homer in 7th lifts Royals over Red Sox 7-3 AP
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Salvador Perez hit a line drive, three-run homer run to break open a close game and finished with four RBIs, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.
Perez's blast in the seventh inning appeared to hit the wall below a railing in left field. The play was reviewed and the original call stood. The call prompted Boston manager Alex Cora to argue with home plate umpire Bill Welke, who tossed Cora.
''I saw a homer,'' a smiling Perez said when asked about the call. ''I looked at the umpire and he said it was a homer. So it's a homer. I'm not going to argue with a homer.''
Even after the game, Cora maintained a different opinion.
''We all thought it was going to be overturned,'' he said. ''In our eyes, the ball was in the ballpark and in play. Probably a double and they score two. But not a homer.''
Bobby Witt Jr. broke a 3-all tie with an RBI single prior to Perez's home run.
Former Royals star Eric Hosmer made his Boston debut, returning to Kauffman Stadium for the first time since the final game of the 2017 season. He finished 0 for 3 with a walk.
Taylor Clarke (3-1) earned the win, despite blowing the lead in the top of the seventh. Darwinzon Hernandez (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in the seventh.
Kris Bubic recorded his fourth straight quality start in a no-decision. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. He walked the first batter he faced and no more. He struck out six. Nick Pivetta allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out five.
''It was the classic `get better as you go,''' Bubic said after the game. ''Obviously, I've made a bad habit out of starting games poorly, but I was able to right the ship. The curveball for strikes, especially early on, kind of helped me get the command of the other two (pitches, his fastball and changeup). Once the fastball and changeup started clicking, I rolled that combo throughout the rest of the outing.''
The Red Sox led 2-0 three batters into the game. Bubic walked Jaylin Davis leading off and Davis went to third on a double by recently acquired Tommy Pham. Rafael Devers hit one down the left-field line for a two-run single. Bubic then got the next three batters to fly out.
''We're watching our younger guys have rough starts and then turn the page,'' Matheny said. ''He had three quality starts in a row. That puts yourself in a bind to think you're going to get through the sixth and keep the runs down after giving up two in the first.
''I love the style of pitching. He didn't have his fastball early. He's learned the lesson of the importance of his breaking ball, because his breaking ball got him back into counts.''
MJ Melendez led off the bottom of the first with a home run. Witt then reached on an infield single. He stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball to center by Perez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vinnie Pasquantino.
Perez drove in Nicky Lopez with the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Lopez led off the inning with a walk, but back-to-back strikeouts found him standing on first with two outs. After stealing second, he scored when Perez's line drive was just beyond the reach of Eric Hosmer at first.
Kevin Plawecki drove in Christian Arroyo with the tying run with a two-out single in the seventh inning.
UP NEXT
The Red Sox and Royals will play the second game of a four-game series Friday night. RHP Zack Greinke (3-6, 4.41 ERA) will start for KC against Boston's Josh Winckowski (4-5, 5.00 ERA).

Hosmer boards 'time machine' for debut with Sox in KC First baseman honored in city where he won 2015 World Series with Royals 1:33 AM ADT
KANSAS CITY -- Something old, something new. For Eric Hosmer, there were all types of emotions to deal with before he put on a Red Sox uniform for the first time on Thursday.
Hosmer was returning to Kansas City, the city where he helped lead the Royals to the 2015 World Series championship. It also happened to be the spot where he met his new teammates and exuded confidence that he and the Red Sox can do some special things in August and September.
It didn’t begin on a winning note for Hosmer, as the Royals rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to snap a tie and go on to a 7-3 victory. But the Red Sox saw glimpses of what life could be like with Hosmer.
He went 0-for-3 with a walk in his debut. In his first Boston at-bat, Hosmer launched a booming drive to center that was caught at the wall by Michael A. Taylor.
After facing his former team this weekend, Hosmer is looking forward to Tuesday, when he'll make his Red Sox debut at Fenway Park.
"I'm excited for that," Hosmer said. "It's a stadium I've always enjoyed playing in. When I'm going good, I tend to go to the opposite field."
Eric Hosmer, meet the Green Monster.
"That will give me more incentive and more drive to work the opposite field," Hosmer said. "I'm excited to get to that ballpark and hit in this lineup."
Manager Alex Cora had Hosmer hitting sixth and playing first base in the series opener vs. the Royals. It has been a whirlwind for Hosmer since Tuesday when he vetoed a trade to Washington and then learned he was being traded to the Red Sox, who coincidentally were headed for Kansas City. Hosmer hadn't been back to K.C. since signing with the Padres as a free agent. He would have been coming with the Padres Aug. 26-28, but the timetable was expedited.
"I felt like I was traveling on a time machine," Hosmer said. "Everything just kind of went fast-forward."
Hosmer walked into Kauffman Stadium at 1:30 p.m. CT and was immediately greeted by stadium workers. The greetings continued as he made it to the clubhouse to meet his Red Sox teammates. Even Royals catcher Salvador Perez made his way to the Red Sox clubhouse to hug Hosmer, his longtime Royals' teammate and the only player from the 2015 championship team still on the roster.
All of that would never have happened if Hosmer didn't have a clause in his contract that enabled him to veto a trade that would have sent him to Washington. Because he did have that clause, Boston was able to get involved.
"Just all part of it," Hosmer said. "I really didn't know I was going anywhere until the last day. "
Hosmer had a chance to meet briefly with Cora and the positive vibes were strong.
"There are a lot of guys on this team who know how to win and have won before," Hosmer said.
Before Hosmer signed his free agent contract with San Diego in February 2018, the Red Sox had been in the running for his services.
"There was definitely mutual interest," Hosmer said. "But ultimately, the deal with San Diego got done."
Now, Hosmer is ready for his time with the Red Sox. He came to the plate for the first time with Boston in the first inning. There was another quick embrace with Perez before Hosmer tipped his helmet to the crowd which gave him a warm and loud ovation.
Against left-hander Kris Bubic, Hosmer made a bid for something spectacular with the drive that Taylor caught as he hit the wall.
"He has seen it all," Cora said of Hosmer. "Been there, done that. Played first base in the highest of games. We feel very comfortable with him."
The first-inning drive reminded Hosmer just how hard it is to get one out of Kauffman Stadium, particularly at night. With his first night as the Boston first baseman out of the way, Hosmer is looking for a lot of bright days ahead.
“Glad to get all that stuff out of the way in the most humble way possible,” Hosmer said. “Now we can get back to trying to win some ballgames.
