RED SOX NOTEBOOK With one more hit, Xander Bogaerts will join an exclusive group of Red Sox Hall of Famers By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated September 16, 2022, 7:40 p.m.
When Xander Bogaerts learned Friday that he was just one hit shy of 1,400, a feat that would make him just the fourth Red Sox player to reach that mark before turning 30, the shortstop began doing some mental math.
“So that means I have about two weeks to get it,” said a smiling Bogaerts before his team’s 2-1 win over the Royals Friday.
Bogaerts turns 30 on Oct. 1.
The three other players to do it before turning 30 are Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Doerr, and Jim Rice.
Bogaerts, who went 0 for 4 on Friday, is on the precipice of joining them.
“This is the fun part about this,” manager Alex Cora said before the game. “Every week we get to talk about something great about him. We can talk about the way he goes about it, the hustle and all that, but in the end, he’s just a very humble kid that loves to play baseball. He shows up every single day.”
Bogaerts is also chasing the American League batting title, entering the day with a .317 average, trailing just Luis Arraez (.320 before Friday). Bogaerts ranks first in the league among shortstops in FanGraphs WAR (6.1), and is third among all American League players. Only the Yankees’ Aaron Judge (9.8) and the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani (8.2) have a higher WAR.
“He loves to play,” Cora said. “He hates offdays and he hates struggling. For him to be one hit away from that milestone, that’s just who he is.” Hernández, Sox honor Clemente
Cora walked into his pregame presser sporting a charcoal gray and yellow Roberto Clemente shirt. Kiké Hernández sported multi-colored — mainly yellow — cleats for Friday’s contest that included a portrait of Clemente, the Puerto Rican flag, and some of his accolades such as 3,000 hits, 15 All-Star appearances, his MVP Award, and 12 Gold Glove honors.
The cleats, designed by Stadium Custom Kicks, even paid tribute to Cangrejeros de Santurce, Clemente’s winter league team in Puerto Rico, where the Hall of Famer began his professional career at 18 years old. Thursday marked Roberto Clemente Day across Major League Baseball. The Sox had an offday, so the celebration for some of the Sox staff and players, like Cora and Hernández, who are both from Puerto Rico, had to wait an additional day. Cora, Hernández, and some other Sox staff members wore Clemente’s No. 21 for Friday’s game.
“More than the cleats, wearing the No. 21 means even more,” Hernández said. “It’s a special day even though we had an offday yesterday. The No. 21 doesn’t lose meaning. He’s a Hall of Famer on the field, but even better off the field. It speaks volumes to who he was as a person and not just to help others, but he was also a humanitarian and he fought a lot of battles to end racism.”
In terms of living up to Clemente’s humanitarian efforts in Puerto Rico, Cora said they have fallen short and need to do a better job of keeping Clemente’s name alive.
“I do believe that what he really wanted is to impact the youth of Puerto Rico,” Cora said. “When I was growing up we had the Roberto Clemente Sports Complex. We used to go there and now you go there and there’s nothing. Shame on us, you know, that we haven’t been able to live up to that.”
Crawford rehab stalled
Trevor Story (left heel) was out again Friday. The Sox hope he can play Saturday or Sunday . . . Nate Eovaldi (right shoulder inflammation) will throw a three inning simulated game Sunday morning at Fenway . . . Kutter Crawford (right shoulder impingement) is not progressing the way the Sox hoped. There’s a strong chance his season is over . . . The Red Sox celebrated Hispanic Heritage month with Dia De Los Media Rojas in recognition of Mexican Independence Day . . . Major League Baseball announced the Arizona Fall League rosters Friday. Eight Red Sox prospects will play for the Scottsdale Scorpions: righthanders Aaron Perry, Thaddeus Ward, Jacob Webb, and Ryan Zeferjahn, catcher Stephen Scott, infielders Niko Kavadas, Nick Yorke, and outfielder Wilyer Abreu. Cora said that top outfield/infield prospect Ceddane Rafaela will play in winter ball in Puerto Rico for Criollos de Caguas, managed by Sox first base coach Ramón Vázquez. Rafaela has had a breakout season in the minors, entering Friday batting .303/.346/.547 with 21 homers between High A Salem and Double A Portland.

Hill 7-6/4.56
Kansas City Royals vs. Boston Red Sox Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 4:10pm EDT Written by David Delano
The Boston Red Sox (70-74) will host the Kansas City Royals (57-88) in the second contest of a three-game series between teams well out of playoff contention. The Red Sox beat the Royals 2-1 on Friday to open up the series. The Royals have won three of the five head-to-head meetings this year.
Can they avoid 100 losses? The Royals are fourth in the AL Central with a 57-88 record. They need to win at least six out of their last 17 games to avoid a 100-loss season, which is easier said than done. Kansas City is on a four-game losing streak and has dropped six of its last seven games. Although wins have been few and far between, Brady Singer has given the Royals a better chance to compete than any other starter in their rotation. Singer is 8-4 with a 3.21 ERA and 1-2 with a 3.83 ERA in 10 road games. Saturday will be the first time that Singer has faced the Red Sox.
The Royals got 6.2 shut out innings from starter Jonathan Heasley on Friday night, but the bullpen allowed two runs in the final 1.1 innings allowing five base-on-balls and one hit.
Still have a shot at .500 The Red Sox are just four games below .500, but that gets you last place in the AL East, where the four other teams all have a winning record, and three are currently in position for a postseason spot. Boston has dropped six of its last 10 games but ended a two-game losing streak on Friday. Southpaw Rich Hill will start for the Red Sox on Saturday. In 22 starts, Hill is 7-6 with a 4.58 ERA. At home, he is 2-3 with an elevated 5.88 ERA in nine starts.
In Friday's win the Red Sox only collected three hits. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 8th, Boston scored its first run after its fourth walk of the inning to tie the score, and then took the lead on a J.D Martinez single with two outs.

Red Sox designate Kevin Plawecki for assignment Updated: Sep. 17, 2022, 2:28 a.m.|Published: Sep. 17, 2022, 12:46 a.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.comChristopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have designated catcher Kevin Plawecki for assignment, according to an industry source.
Plawecki was a solid backup catcher who worked well with the pitching staff. He was an especially strong game-caller. He also was well liked in the clubhouse and responsible (with Jason Varitek) for creating the laundry cart home run celebration.
But he’s eligible for free agency this coming offseason and the Red Sox need to give Connor Wong and Reese McGuire more playing time. Wong and McGuire both are under team control longterm. Boston needs to evaluate both young catchers for the 2023 roster. According to sources, the Red Sox intend to use Plawecki’s open roster spot on a pitcher. Frank German and A.J. Politi are two possible candidates at Triple-A Worcester.
The 31-year-old Plawecki struggled offensively this season. He batted .217 with a .287 on-base percentage, .287 slugging percentage, .574 OPS, one homer and eight doubles in 61 games.
He threw out only 3-for-40 base stealers (8%) in 2021 and 4-of-43 (9%) this season.
In three seasons (2020-22) with Boston, he slashed .272/.335/.365/.700.

Red Sox promote Frank German, the prospect received in Yankees trade in 2021 Updated: Sep. 17, 2022, 10:14 a.m.|Published: Sep. 17, 2022, 9:40 a.m. Frank German
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com The Red Sox will promote reliever Frank German from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, according to two industry sources.
He will take Kevin Plawecki’s spot on the 40-man roster. Boston designated Plawecki for assignment Friday evening.
The Red Sox acquired the hard-throwing German with Adam Ottavino from the Yankees in January 2021. He dominated at Triple-A Worcester this season, posting a 2.58 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 32 outings (38 ⅓ innings). Opposing hitters batted just .154 against him.
The 24-year-old righty throws a fastball in the mid-to-upper 90s. He also features a splitter and slider.
“Hard thrower. It’s mid-to-upper-90s,” WooSox manager Chad Tracy said last month. “I think Frank’s been excellent. His split is starting to come. He’s starting to throw the split more and he’s throwing it very effectively. He’s got a good breaking ball.
“Most of the time it’s 98, 99 (mph) with really good life and you have to honor the split as well,” Tracy added.
German started this season at Double-A Portland where he posted a 3.18 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and .158 batting average against in 11 outings (11 ⅓ innings).

Game 145: Royals at Red Sox lineups and notes By Amin Touri Globe Staff,Updated September 17, 2022, 10:27 a.m.
The Red Sox have entered the final stretch of a largely forgettable season, with little left at stake but moral victories and development time for prospects.
Saturday starter Rich Hill doesn’t quite fit that bill, with the 42-year-old making his 218th career start. The slow southpaw silenced the Orioles in his last outing, allowing just two hits in five shutout innings in a 1-0 win. Related: Sunday Baseball Notes: Will the turmoil the Yankees have endured this season help them in the playoffs?
Royals righthander Brady Singer will make his first career start against the Red Sox. The former first round pick is coming off a strong start of his own — seven shutout innings against the Tigers on Sunday.
Lineups
ROYALS (57-88): Melendez C, Witt Jr. SS, Perez DH, Pasquantino 1B, Taylor CF, Olivares RF, Massey 2B, Dozier LF, Eaton 3B
Pitching: RHP Brady Singer (8-4, 3.21 ERA)
RED SOX (70-74): Pham LF, Devers 3B, Martinez DH, Verdugo RF, Arroyo 2B, Casas 1B, Hernández CF, Chang SS, Wong C
Pitching: LHP Rich Hill (7-6, 4.56 ERA)
Time: 4:10 p.m.
TV, radio: NESN, WEEI-FM 93.7
Royals vs. Hill: Dozier 0-1, Lopez 1-1, Perez 2-6, Taylor 3-8
Red Sox vs. Singer: Chang 0-1, McGuire 0-1
Stat of the day: The Red Sox won Friday, 2-1, despite being held to just three hits; the second time they’ve won with three hits or fewer this season.
Notes: Last week’s win was Hill’s second scoreless appearance in a span of four starts, including his seven-inning, 11-strikeout effort on Aug. 27 against the Rays. In between, he was tagged for nine runs in eight innings against the Rangers and the Rays ... Hill is 2-2 with a 5.76 ERA in 14 career appearances (five starts) against Kansas City ... The Royals have dropped four straight since Singer shut down the Tigers on Sept. 11 ... Singer has worked at least seven scoreless innings on four occasions this season, a mark only matched by the Cleveland Guardians’ Triston McKenzie in the American League ... Singer is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his past seven starts.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 1h Cora on designating Plawecki: “It’s a hard one, but we have to be thinking about the future.”
Cora says the players hung out at some length after the game yesterday to spend time with Plawecki, a strong indicator of how highly Plawecki was and is regarded by teammates
