Game 146: Royals at Red Sox lineups and notesBy Amin Touri Globe Staff,Updated September 18, 2022, 1 hour ago Like a debuting Clint Black, these Red Sox are just killing time on this lost season and looking toward the future with a handful of games to go. Related: Another listless loss, this one to the Royals, as the Red Sox shift their sights toward the future Nick Pivetta will make another run at his first double-digit win total on Sunday. The righthander was solid in his last two outings but didn’t have enough help from his bats or his bullpen, and will need to overcome his struggles against the Royals — a 7.53 ERA in three career starts — to reach that milestone. Southpaw Kris Bubic has the ball for the visitors in the series finale; he was solid in a Royals win over the Sox in early August, allowing two earned runs over six innings of work. Lineups ROYALS (58-88): 1. MJ Melendez (L) C 2. Bobby Witt Jr. (R) SS 3. Salvador Perez (R) DH 4. Vinnie Pasquantino (L) 1B 5. Edward Olivares (R) LF 6. Michael Massey (L) 2B 7. Nate Eaton (R) 3B 8. Martinez (38), and Xander Bogaerts (37) each rank in the top five in the AL in doubles. Notes: Kansas City snapped a four-game losing streak in emphatic fashion with Saturday’s 9-0 win, its ninth shutout of the season ... Pivetta tossed five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, in his last appearance against the Royals on Aug. 4 ... Bubic has taken six consecutive losses and logged a 6.19 ERA in that span for the Royals, though he worked at least six innings in two of his last three starts. His last win came on July 24 against another American League opponent, Tampa Bay ... Despite a five-start winless streak since Aug. 16 in Pittsburgh, Pivetta has a 3.86 ERA since the beginning of August. Song of the Day: U2 - Gloria www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybYgP48X2DY

Devers' 4 hits, 3 RBIs carry Red Sox past Royals, 13-3 AP
BOSTON (AP) Rafael Devers had four hits and three RBIs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 13-3 on Sunday.
Tommy Pham added three hits and three RBIs, and Kike Hernandez scored four times. Last-place Boston had dropped three of four and seven of 10 overall.
Xander Bogaerts, who can opt out of his contract with the Red Sox at the end of the season, added two hits with an RBI double, raising his average to .316. His double moved him into a tie with Dom DiMaggio (308) for ninth on Boston's career list.
Bogaerts, who turns 30 on Oct. 1, also got his 1,400th hit, making him the fourth player with Boston to reach that total before turning 30.
''I didn't know about it,'' he said. ''It's special when you're reaching stuff like that.''
He joined Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Doerr and Jim Rice.
''All three of them are much better players than me,'' he said. ''For me to be on that list is special. On a personal level, how far that I came since I played my first year in the Dominican Summer League. ... It's crazy man. I still feel great, in good shape, hopefully I can do it for a long time.''
Salvador Perez hit a solo homer for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino and Drew Waters each had an RBI double.
Making a 30th start for the second straight year, Boston's Nick Pivetta (10-11) gave up three runs in five innings.
''It's what I'm built to do, it's what I know how to do and what I expect of myself,'' he said. ''That's what I train myself for in the offseason.''
Kris Bubic (2-13) lost his seventh straight start, giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings.
''Every game is going to rotate around the tempo our starters give us and the tone that they set,'' Royals manager Mike Matheny said. ''In the third, a couple of plays needed to be made behind him.''
Devers' two-run single made it 7-3 in the fifth. Boston then blew it open with four runs in the sixth.
EXTRA EXTRA
Boston had a season-high nine doubles after being held without an extra-base hit in consecutive games. It was the first time in 33 years that the Red Sox didn't collect an extra-base hit in back-to-back games in Fenway Park, the last also against Kansas City from April 22-23, 1989.
CROSSING SPORTS
With the NFL in its second week, some of the Red Sox discussed their fantasy lineups in the clubhouse before the game.
Manager Alex Cora even joined in when he talked about Pham.
''I know you guys will like this one and you guys can run away with it, but yesterday I heard he's the best fantasy football player we have,'' Cora said. ''A lot of connections. ... He knows game plans and all that. He has a lot of people in the league and he takes advantage of that.''
Pham was suspended in May for three games after slapping then-Giants outfielder Joc Pederson over a fantasy league disagreement.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (right shoulder inflammation), who can become a free agent after the season, threw a simulated game off the Fenway mound. He hopes to start at least two more times, with both likely coming at home. ''I love pitching here, regardless the time of the year, but with the possibility of these possibly being my last two, I'm excited for them,'' he said.
UP NEXT
Royals: Open a three-game series at home against the Twins on Tuesday, when RHP Zack Greinke (4-9, 4.10 ERA) is slated to face Minnesota's RHP Dylan Bundy (8-7, 4.68 ERA).
Red Sox: Open a two-game interleague series at Cincinnati on Tuesday night. Rookie RHP Brayan Bello (1-6, 5.10 ERA) is scheduled to start for Boston against LHP Nick Lodolo (4-6, 3.81 ERA).

Red Sox injuries: Nathan Eovaldi throws 4-inning sim game, expects to pitch again in 2022

BOSTON — Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi threw approximately 65 pitches over 4 innings in a simulated game here at Fenway Park on Sunday.
The righty, who is eligible for free agency this coming offseason and hasn’t discussed a contract extension with Boston, has been on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation since Aug. 22 (retroactive to Aug. 19).
“It felt good,” Eovaldi said. “I was trying to use all my pitches. It’s a little tough to get going early in the morning. But I felt like I was finishing my pitches for the most part and I mixed them all up.” Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
Eovaldi might make a minor league rehab start this week. Triple-A Worcester is at Polar Park Tuesday-Sunday. He then would be able to make two starts with Boston before the season ends.
“He looked good,” manager Alex Cora said. “Now we’ll see how he feels tomorrow. He mixed everything up. A lot of splits and the slider and the curveball. The quality of the fastball was OK. So now it’s just a matter of how he reacts to it and what’s the next step. Obviously we’re running out of time as far as games and all that stuff. So we’ll see what’s next.”
Story might play Tuesday
Trevor Story hasn’t played this week. He left last Sunday’s game in the seventh inning with left heel pain after he slipped on the first base bag.
“With Trevor, it’s about running right now,” Cora said. “How much he can tolerate. So he ran the bases today. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. I’ve been saying this for a few days, the goal is for him to play the next game. So we just have to be patient with it.”

BOSTON — Xander Bogaerts recorded his 1,400th career hit in the Red Sox’s 13-3 win here Sunday at Fenway Park.
It put him in exclusive company. Carl Yastrzemski (1,480 hits), Bobby Doerr (1,437 hits) and Jim Rice (1,429 hits) are the only other players in Red Sox history to reach 1,400 hits before turning 30. Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
Bogaerts did it in his first at-bat. He belted his 38th double this season to knock in Tommy Pham and put Boston ahead 1-0.
The star shortstop, who turns 30 on Oct. 1, also singled to lead off the bottom of the third and scored on a double by J.D. Martinez.
The Red Sox stroked 20 hits. Martinez went 2-for-4 with his 40th double.
Rafael Devers (4-for-6), Reese McGuire (3-for-4), Tommy Pham (3-for-4, walk), Bogaerts (2-for-4), Kiké Hernández (2-for-3, two walks) and Yu Chang (2-for-3, two walks) also had multi-hit games.
Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta pitched 5 innings, allowing three runs, seven hits (one homer) and two walks while striking out seven.

Red Sox’s Xander Bogaerts calls ejection one of his ‘turning points’; ‘That felt great’

BOSTON — Xander Bogaerts was grinding at the plate earlier in the second half. He posted a .253/.314/.390/.704 line during a 26-game stretch from July 17-Aug. 19.
Then home plate umpire Todd Tichenor ejected him for arguing a strike-three call and firing down his bat during the fourth inning in Baltimore on Aug. 19. It marked his first ejection since 2018.
Since then, Bogaerts has gone 34-for-90 (.378) with five homers and seven doubles in 23 games. And he’s fighting for a batting title.
He went 2-for-4 in the Red Sox’s 13-3 victory over the Royals here at Fenway Park on Sunday. His .316 batting average is tied for second in the American League.
He’s one point behind Twins’ Luis Arraez (.317) and tied with Aaron Judge who is trying for the Triple Crown.
“When I got thrown out, that felt great,” Bogaerts said. “It’s probably one of the turning points. I know the next day I probably went 0-for-5 (he did). That was just for me being rude to the umpire the night before. But as I said, I was not in a really good spot. As soon as I got thrown out of the game — I’m not a guy that gets thrown out a lot — but that felt really good, I was telling guys. It just felt like a lot of stuff was off my shoulder. It felt really good.”
The star shortstop, who will turn 30 on Oct. 1, recorded his 1,400th career in his first at-bat Sunday.
It put him in exclusive company. Carl Yastrzemski (1,480 hits), Bobby Doerr (1,437 hits) and Jim Rice (1,429 hits) are the only other players in Red Sox history to reach 1,400 hits before turning 30.
“All three of them are much better players than me,” Bogaerts said. “I feel like for me to be on that list, it’s special. On a personal level, how far that I’ve come since I played my first year in the Dominican Summer League. There was actually an umpire out there today, he was like, ‘I umpired you when you were in the Dominican.’ So it’s crazy, man. And I still feel great. I feel in great shape. I feel young. And hopefully, I can do this for a long time.”
The Red Sox recorded 20 hits Sunday.
“It felt good, especially winning,” Bogaerts said. “We got shut out yesterday. And we’re still playing. It’s fun to win games.”
The batting title is a goal for Bogaerts. He said it has kept him locked in.
“Yeah, it is. I’m not going to sit here and lie to you,” Bogaerts said. “If it happens, it happens. If it don’t, it don’t. I’m aware of it. A couple weeks back I wasn’t even in the conversation. ... It’s something within reach.”

Injuries & Moves: Eovaldi could return soon 1:54 PM ADT
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
Sept. 18: RHP Nathan Eovaldi fires four-inning simulated game Eovaldi threw four innings and 65 pitches in a simulated game at Fenway Park on Sunday morning, facing teammates Tommy Pham, Trevor Story and Abraham Almonte. If Eovaldi comes out of that exercise with no complications, he will likely make a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
That could position Eovaldi to make a start for the Red Sox during the next homestand against the Orioles and then a final 2022 outing in the last series of the season against the Rays. The hard-throwing righty has been limited to 18 starts this season due to injuries, the most recent of which was right shoulder inflammation.
"I just tried to throw about 15 pitches an inning and I think it was six to seven minutes sitting between each one," Eovaldi said. "I felt good. I tried to use all my pitches. I assume the next step will be a rehab start. If everything goes well, it should be one rehab start and then go compete. I’d love to pitch in front of the home crowd again."
Sept. 18: 2B Trevor Story takes swings against Eovaldi, could play Tuesday On the one-week anniversary of injuring his left heel in a game against the Orioles, Story took a big step forward by taking at-bats against teammate Nathan Eovaldi in a Sunday simulated game at Fenway. This could position Story to get back in the lineup for the opener of a two-game series in Cincinnati on Tuesday.
"With Trevor it’s all about running right now, how much he can tolerate," manager Alex Cora said. "He rant the bases today. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. I’ve been saying this for a few days: the goal is for him to play the next day. Just have to be patient."

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Nate Eovaldi prepping for rehab start, could return by Red Sox’ next home series By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated September 18, 2022, 2 hours ago
Nate Eovaldi (right shoulder inflammation) tossed a four-inning simulated game Sunday morning at Fenway Park.
The righthander threw 65 pitches against hitters, including Tommy Pham and Trevor Story.
“I felt good,” Eovaldi said prior to the Sox’ 13-3 win, stamping a series victory Sunday afternoon. “I was trying to use all of my pitches. It was a little tough getting it going early in the morning. But I felt like I was finishing my pitches for the most part. I mixed them all up.”
If all goes well, Eovaldi could be back in the mix soon, beginning with a rehab start Friday for the WooSox. If Eovaldi comes out of that start without any issues, there’s a strong chance he will pitch in the Sox’ next home series against the Orioles.
Even though the Sox are out of the playoff hunt, Eovaldi still wants to finish the season on a positive note. Eovaldi especially wants to get back on the mound for Red Sox fans. The righthander is set to be a free agent at the end of this year, though the Sox could extend him a qualifying offer.
“I love pitching at Fenway regardless of the time of the year, especially with it possibly being my last year,” Eovaldi said. “Our fans are outstanding and show love and support. I mean, [Saturday night] we had a sellout crowd. That means a lot to us.”
Eovaldi stayed healthy for much of the previous two seasons.
In 2022, however, injuries — which have plagued him for most of his career — became an issue again. He missed a chunk of the summer with hip and back issues, then hit the injured list again in late August with shoulder inflammation.
“You don’t want to finish the year on the IL,” manager Alex Cora said. “There are different [reasons] why. To go through all this stuff and at least go out there and perform, it means a lot. Not only for him but for us too. So that’s what we all will try to shoot for and hopefully it happens.”
Story time
The original plan was for Trevor Story to play during the Sox’ most recent Yankee series at Fenway Park. But that timeline has been pushed back for nearly a week. The hope now is for Story to be ready for the team’s upcoming two-game set against the Reds which is set to begin Tuesday. Story has no problems when he’s hitting. He’s moving around well in the field, too. But running is an issue. Story getting back in the lineup comes down to pain tolerance, Cora suggested. Brayan Bello on deck
Alex Verdugo received an offday Sunday. The Sox will have Brayan Bello on the mound for the Sox’ Tuesday contest against the Reds at Cincinnati. Wednesday starter is still to be determined. For the Sox’ four-game set against the Yankees in New York, Michael Wacha will start the series opener Thursday, followed by Rich Hill, Nick Pivetta, and Bello … The Red Sox would like to see Kutter Crawford (right shoulder impingement) go through some sort of progression on the mound, but it’s very doubtful that he actually pitches in a game again this season … After Monday’s offday, the Red Sox will finish the season with 16 straight games in as many days.
