GIDPanother great call by the analytics department LOL! PHing Wong for McGuire against a lefty is so automatic that it has nothing to do with analytics. McGuire is just waving at the ball at this point. Not every move needs to be criticized. Grasping at straws again

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 7h The Red Sox bullpen ranks last in chase swing and misses, 27th in contact allowed on swings, 24th in swinging strike rate, 28th in called+swinging strikes, & 27th strikeout rate,
They fixed their strike throwing problem - 3rd lowest walk rate - but now have a whiff and K issue. The BP has a 10.9 K/9 rate in June. The BP has been okay, and the SP 1-2-3 have been okay. It is the #4-5-6-7 SPs that have been killing us. Sale, Paxton & Bello have been okay. The other 5 have combined for an ERA of 5.95.

Red Sox To Select Matt Dermody
By Anthony Franco | June 7, 2023 at 9:46pm CDT
The Red Sox are calling up left-hander Matt Dermody to start tomorrow night’s matchup with the Guardians, tweets Ian Browne of MLB.com. Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe first noted that Dermody had a locker in the Boston clubhouse. He’s not on the 40-man roster, so the Sox will have to formally select his contract before the game.
Dermody signed a minor league deal with Boston over the winter. He’s worked primarily from the rotation with Triple-A Worcester, starting eight of nine appearances. While the southpaw’s 4.50 ERA isn’t eye-catching, he’s posted solid peripheral marks.
The 32-year-old has punched out just under a quarter of opposing hitters against a meager 4.7% walk rate. He has induced grounders at a decent 45.3% clip. A lofty .346 batting average on balls in play and middling 67.8% left-on-base rate have inflated his run prevention figure despite his other solid numbers.
Of course, Dermody isn’t a lock to carry over those decent rate stats against big league hitters. This will be his first MLB start. Dermody has only ever worked out of the bullpen at the big league level, with virtually all of that experience coming six years ago for the Blue Jays. He carries a 5.60 ERA with an 18.2% strikeout percentage in 27 1/3 MLB frames.
Dermody still has a pair of minor league options remaining. The Red Sox can send him back to Worcester at any point without exposing him to waivers. It’s possible this is just a spot start, although Boston has a rotation vacancy after losing Chris Sale to the injured list last week. The Red Sox turned to swingman Kutter Crawford today, but he was tagged for three runs in as many innings while taking the loss to Cleveland.
Boston already has an opening on the 40-man roster after designating Raimel Tapia for assignment on Monday. They’ll only need to create space on the 26-man active roster to accommodate Dermody’s promotion.

Boston's No. 14 prospect has scoreless outing in MLB debut Lefty Murphy strikes out five over 3 1/3 relief innings against Cleveland 12:31 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
CLEVELAND -- A starter for most of his pitching life, Chris Murphy came on for his first Major League appearance in relief -- and with some traffic.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora had a quick message for the team’s No. 14 prospect, as rated by MLB Pipeline.
“The only thing I said to him was, ‘You’re a big leaguer, here we go, have fun,’” said Cora after Boston’s 5-2 loss to the Guardians on Wednesday night.
There Murphy was -- two days after his 25th birthday -- on the mound at Progressive Field with a runner on second base and two outs, his team down three runs.
Murphy was out of the inning on two pitches, getting Josh Naylor to ground his 95.2 mph fastball to shortstop Kiké Hernández.
“Honestly, I blacked out a little bit,” said Murphy. “I tried to take in the first few seconds, but I had a runner on base and I honestly didn't want him to score. So that's the competitor in me, I wanted to leave that runner there. So that was my first focus and then kind of told myself, ‘I'll take it in right after I'm done.’”
There was so much for Murphy to take in.
First of all, there was the performance, and it was a fine one. Over 3 1/3 innings, Murphy gave up two hits and no runs, walking one and striking out five.
At first, it was surreal for the hard-throwing lefty -- who the Red Sox took in the sixth round out of the University of San Diego in 2019.
“At one point yeah, it was like, ‘Wow, I’m pitching in a Major League game,’” said Murphy. “Then, I’m like, ‘It’s 60 feet six inches, so everything's exactly the same.’ Just a few more fans and some better hitters.”
Also, there was the support system, which included his parents, his sister, his girlfriend and perhaps most meaningfully to Murphy, the mother of his late friend Jessica, who he considered a sister. Jessica died of cancer in 2012.
“It was special having Jessica’s mom here,” said Murphy. “She's never watched me play baseball, at least from as far as I can remember. She maybe watched me play in Little League, but she hasn’t watched me play in a long time, so it was special that was she was there. It meant the world.”
Murphy was given two baseballs after the game -- the one he recorded his first out with and another that he got his first strikeout with.
“I’ll probably keep the first strikeout, but my first out is going to Jessica’s mom for sure,” said Murphy.
Then there was Murphy’s own mom, Jennifer, who beamed with pride as she watched her son fulfill a dream.
“It’s crazy. Super crazy,” said Jennifer Murphy, who flew from Los Angeles to Cleveland to take in the festivities. “It’s a whirlwind. The journey has been quite amazing for him. It’s hard to explain what this is like as a parent watching him. It’s hard to believe that’s my kid out there.”
Chris had told his mom this was coming more than a decade ago.
“He’s been talking about this since he was 12,” said Jennifer. “I’m the mom and would never say anything to him. I just always wanted to make sure he had a Plan B, you know, if it didn’t work out. So it was like, ‘Get good grades. You never know what will happen.’ When he was in high school, I remember taking him to showcases, and then his college scholarship came along. He’s always had the eye on the prize.”
Ashley Murphy, a former softball star at the University of Hawaii, won the travel award for big brother’s debut. She flew in from Hawaii, with connections in Los Angeles and Washington D.C., prolonging the journey to 14 or 15 hours.
“It was worth it, for sure,” said Ashley. “I couldn’t miss this. When he was in college, I wasn’t really able to make it to a lot of his games because we were playing at the same time. Now that I’m out of college, there’s no reason for me not to. I dropped everything. I had mentioned to people, 'When he gets the call, I don’t care where I am. I’m going wherever he is.'”
While Murphy is expected to get optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make way for lefty Matt Dermody to get called up to start on Thursday, he created quite the first impression.
“Excellent,” said Cora. “That was cool to see. Good fastball, good breaking ball. We stretched him out. I’m glad he can say he’s a big leaguer.”

Chris Murphy pitches well in MLB debut but Red Sox make 3 errors in loss

Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Red Sox left-handed prospect Chris Murphy made his MLB debut and pitched 3 ⅓ scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five.
But the Red Sox’s defensive issues continued with three errors in a 5-2 loss to the Guardians here at Progressive Field on Wednesday.
Boston dropped to .500 (31-31). The Sox are 10-17 in their past 27 games.
Both Triston Casas and Rafael Devers made errors in the fourth inning when Cleveland plated two unearned runs to take the lead for good, 3-2.
Amed Rosario singled to lead off the inning. Casas failed to catch an underhanded throw from second baseman Enmanuel Valdez on José Ramírez ground ball. The error allowed Rosario to advance to third base and Ramirez to second.
Josh Naylor singled home Rosario to tie it. Ramírez scored to make it 3-2 when Devers failed to cleanly field Josh Bell’s grounder to third base.
Kutter Crawford started for Boston. He wasn’t expected to pitch more than 3-4 innings on short rest. He allowed three runs (one earned), five hits and no walks while striking out three in 3-plus innings.
Red Sox right-handed reliever Justin Garza gave up two runs on three hits while recording only two outs in the fifth. Red Sox score first
The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Devers’ bloop single to left field.
They went ahead 2-1 in the fourth when Naylor made an error on Valdez’s grounder to first base.
The series finale
Cleveland and Boston will play the rubber game of their three-game series Thursday. The Red Sox have not yet named a starter. Aaron Civale (1-1, 2.04 ERA) will start for the Guardians.
The Red Sox have an open spot on their 40-man roster and most likely will add a minor leaguer from Worcester to make the start.

Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen ‘OK’ after grabbing knee during save
Updated: Jun. 07, 2023, 7:32 p.m.|Published: Jun. 07, 2023, 7:27 p.m.

Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Guardians on Tuesday to record his 13th save.
He grabbed his knee during the outing but manager Alex Cora said there’s no cause for concern.
“Age, man. Age,” Cora joked about the 35-year-old. “He’s OK. He was getting treatment. He’s available today. It’s one of those, it’s just part of the grind of a season and all that stuff. But nothing serious.”
No new news with Chris Sale
Chris Sale, who the Red Sox placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, said Saturday he still needed further testing after an MRI and CT scan. He said he hoped to know more about his diagnosis within the week.
“No further testing this week,” manager Alex Cora said Wednesday at Progressive Field. “So we’re just making sure everything goes well and then obviously medical (staff) and all that stuff, they decide what to do next week.” Yu Chang goes 2-for-3
Utility infielder Yu Chang (broken left hamate) played in a rehab game for a second straight day Wednesday. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run for Triple-A Worcester. He played five innings at shortstop.
He’s expected to play the rest of the week in Worcester.
“We have to make sure he gets at-bats under his belt and also the running part of it,” Cora said. “The innings on defense, we’re not worried about it. We know he can play short, he can play first, second, third. It’s just the at-bats. That’s what we’re most worried about and obviously how he reacts in games he swings a lot.”
Chang, who underwent surgery, began a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on May 26 but he was pulled off it after just one game because of soreness while hitting.
“There were certain pitches that before, they were giving him trouble, especially down in the zone,” Cora said. “The last three or four days he’s been good.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Why Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida has no interest in being named Rookie of the Year By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 7, 2023, 8:18 p.m.
CLEVELAND — Masataka Yoshida has proven himself to be one of the better hitters in the game.
He entered Wednesday ranked fifth in batting average (.319), 10th in on-base percentage (.393), while owning the sixth-lowest strikeout rate (10.3 percent).
The adjustment to the big leagues from Nippon Professional Baseball was certainly overplayed, and Yoshida should be the leading candidate for American League Rookie of the Year.
But not in Yoshida’s mind. The 29-year-old doesn’t see himself as a rookie given his track record in Japan.
“I am not interested in Rookie of the Year because I have done years in Japan already,” Yoshida said through a translator before the 5-2 loss to the Guardians, in which he went 1 for 4. “But it’s an honor.”
Simply put, Yoshida wants that award to go to someone a bit younger. Yoshida, a Japan Series Champion, four-time NPB All-Star, five-time Pacific League Best Nine Award winner (given to the best player at each position), two-time Pacific League batting champion, and World Baseball Classic champion after leading Japan past the US in this year’s final, has zero interest in being named Rookie of the Year.
“Compared to the other candidates that are in their 20s, I feel a little bit older,” Yoshida said.
Manager Alex Cora didn’t have a comparison for Yoshida, saying the closest might be the Marlins’ Luis Arraez, who is hitting .403.
Yoshida’s hitting prowess has allowed him to become a voice as he has become more acclimated to the team. He has offered players advice, including Jarren Duran, when they were struggling.
“He’s a big part of what we’re trying to accomplish, not only this year but the future,” Cora said.
Duvall on the verge
There’s a strong chance Adam Duvall (wrist fracture) will be reinstated Friday for the start of a three-game series against the Yankees in New York. That would likely mean less playing time for Duran, who was recalled from Triple A Worcester when Duvall was put on the injured list.
Though Duran has cooled off lately, batting just .189 with a .533 OPS in his last 26 games entering Wednesday, he has filled in admirably for Duvall, who was the team’s hottest player, hitting .455 with four homers in his first eight games with the Sox.
Duran, though, provided an instant spark after his recall. He has improved in center field and has raised his hands at the plate, allowing him to find the barrel more consistently.
As a result, Duran hit .404 with a 1.116 OPS in his first 18 big league games this season. Despite his recent downturn, the Sox recently designated outfielder Raimel Tapia for assignment. Cora intimated that the move was about the team’s faith in Duran.
Even though Duran’s playing time might take a hit, the Sox will still try to figure out a way to keep him in the mix.
“It’s something that we have to work with,” Cora said. “Of course, we’ve got to take care of [Duvall], too. He hasn’t played in a while. Just to throw him out there X amount of games in a row, that’s not going to work. So, we’ll find ways to get at-bats for Jarren.”
Recently, Cora has said that Kiké Hernández will see some more time in center field. Duran and Duvall are both capable of playing left, and Yoshida, a below-average defender, could get more reps at designated hitter depending on the day and matchup.
Duvall went 1 for 4 with a walk for Worcester on Wednesday. Sparkling debut
Chris Murphy made his major league debut Wednesday, going 3⅓ innings, allowing two hits, striking out five, and yielding just a walk.
He became the second Red Sox in history to pitch 3⅓ scoreless innings of relief in his debut, joining Garrett Whitlock (April 4, 2021).
“Honestly, I blacked out a little bit and tried to take in the first few seconds. But I had a runner on base and honestly didn’t want him to score,” said Murphy. Guest appearance
The Red Sox’ starter for Thursday’s series finale will be lefthander Matt Dermody, who has a 4.50 ERA at Worcester and has 30 games of big league experience … Chris Sale (left shoulder inflammation) won’t undergo any further testing until next week, according to Cora … The Yankees-White Sox game Wednesday was postponed because of hazardous air quality in New York, the Red Sox’ next stop. The teams will play a traditional doubleheader Thursdaybeginning at 4:05 p.m. … Yu Chang (broken hamate bone) will play the rest of the week for Worcester. The shortstop went 2 for 3 with an RBI, stolen base, and a run on Wednesday.

Red Sox look to clean up defense in finale in Cleveland FLM
The errors keep piling up for the Boston Red Sox, who face the host Cleveland Guardians in the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday.
Boston matched its season high with three miscues in a 5-2 loss on Wednesday and leads the American League with 43 errors. The Red Sox committed all three errors in the fourth inning on Wednesday, leading to a pair of Cleveland runs.
"It's frustrating because we're working," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "It's not lack of effort, it's not lack of work. It is who we are right now. At some point, you have to slow the game down ... they're trying; right now it's just not happening for us."
Boston has lost four of its last five games, while Cleveland has won six of its last 10. Guardians designated hitter Josh Bell has driven in a run in six straight games.
Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor committed a costly error in Wednesday's victory, but finished with three hits, including a run-scoring single. Naylor has 34 RBIs in his last 32 games.
"Josh was pretty locked in after that error," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said after the win. "You could tell he wanted to get some payback. He had a pretty eventful night. There wasn't much that went on out there that he wasn't a part of."
Cleveland will send right-hander Aaron Civale (1-1, 2.04 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. He returned from the injured list after missing 48 games with a strained left oblique and tossed five scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins last Friday.
Civale, 27, was pleased with his performance after missing large gaps of time due to various injuries over the past two years.
"(I felt) great," Civale said. "Obviously, any time the game's taken away from you -- unfortunately, I've had a little experience with that the last couple of years -- I'm just glad to be back out there, competing again with all of those guys."
Civale is making his second career start versus Boston. He allowed three runs over four innings in a 4-0 loss to the Red Sox on June 26, 2022.
Boston will turn to left-hander Matt Dermody (season debut) while the team looks to fill the void left by injured starter Chris Sale, who landed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation last week.
Dermody, 32, signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox in January and has gone 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in nine games (eight starts) for Triple-A Worcester this season.
He has made 30 career relief appearances in the majors since 2016, including one game with the Chicago Cubs last season.
Left-hander Chris Murphy was a candidate to start the series finale but was ruled out after pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings in his major league debut on Wednesday.
Boston has gone 1-2 since holding a team meeting prior to Monday's 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox have been held to two runs or fewer in 11 of their last 22 games.
"We keep talking about it, but we've got to get better," Cora said. "I think enough with the talking about it. We've just got to perform."

The bad news continues to outweigh the good for the Red Sox
By Rob Bradford WEEI 93.7 an hour ago
The glass-half-full, glass-half-empty situation debate is a tough one in the world of baseball. Why? Because ultimately it's a results business, and of the Red Sox business has simply not been good enough.
The latest bottom line: A 5-2 loss to the Guardians in Cleveland Wednesday night.
If you want to avert your eyes to the score, the standings - which have the Red Sox five games back of a Wild Card spot - and the continuous tidal wave of defensive miscues, then there were some storylines to hang your hat on.
With his family in the stands, Chris Murphy excelled in his big league debut, pitching 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Masa Yoshida continued his march toward being an American League All-Star. And after Red Sox manager Alex Cora clarified that Rafael Devers was not hurt, the third baseman showed signs of life with a multi-hit game.
But then there was the loss. And, to top things off, the New York-like cloud that now hovers over Thursday's game because of the surfacing of controversial tweets by fill-in starter Matt Dermody. (It as a situation that - as detailed in Sean McAdam's report on the matter - had the Red Sox at one point contemplating releasing the lefty.)
Welcome to the 2023 Red Sox, where you don't quite know what to feel.
Perhaps it is a bump in the road on the way to taking the series in Cleveland before taking advantage of an Aaron Judge-less Yankees team. If so, then the night should have been highlighted to the presence of Murphy, not only because of his performance but also due to his backstory.
As he explained when appearing on the Bradfo Sho podcast:
“My sister Jessica – she was not a blood-related sister, she was my babysitter growing up for me and my sister. She lived just down the street. We thought of her as a sister and saw her every day. Picked us up from school every day. She went to every single one of my Little League games when she could. She was pretty much the team mom in the dugout and she was diagnosed with cancer when I was in sixth grade. And I just remember starting to write in my hat in sixth grade so she could see it saying, ‘I play for Jessica.’
“She was a Yankee fan – diehard Yankee fan – and I didn’t know how it worked at that time and it was like, ‘I’m going to save you a ticket to my first major league game.’ And this was in sixth, seventh grade at this time, and she said ‘I’m going to make you promise me that.’ So it was a promise that I held and when she passed away when I was going into high school I put it in her casket, wrote it down, ‘I play for Jessica. I promise to save you a ticket for my first major league game’ and I put that in her casket, and that’s something I’ve carried near and dear to me."
Murphy got his chance, and certainly didn't forget his promise.
“It was special having Jessica’s mom here,” Murphy told reporters. “She's never watched me play baseball, at least from as far as I can remember. She maybe watched me play in Little League, but she hasn’t watched me play in a long time, so it was special that was she was there. It meant the world.”
But as Wednesday turned into Thursday, the reality of these Red Sox once again have to be brought to the forefront.
Non-scoreboard-storylines aside, it would seem important to start digging in on exactly how optimistic Sox fans should be. Time is ticking.
