Guess his chain is holding him down
Good For Cora benching his ass too.
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne · 1h I was curious why Verdugo came out of the game last night.
Alex Cora confirms that Alex Verdugo was taken out of last night's game and benched today for not hustling to second on a slow grounder to the right side by Masataka Yoshida.
Cora added that Verdugo will be back in the lineup tomorrow at Yankee Stadium. It sounded like he doesn't want to use him under any circumstances tonight, except an emergency.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 7m Asked if Verdugo was available off the bench tonight, Cora said he was not playing.
Seems as the manager has drawn a line with some of the indifferent play of late.

The Boston Red Sox could have Adam Duvall back by the end of the week.
Manager Alex Cora said Thursday that there is a “good chance” that Duvall will be activated Friday, MassLive’s Christopher Smith reports.
The Red Sox are out in Cleveland as they finish up their series against the Guardians. The team then moves on to the Bronx for its first series of the season against the New York Yankees.
Duvall landed on the injured list back in April after fracturing his wrist on a slide. The veteran outfielder has slowly been working toward a return. The team has been hesitant to pin an exact date on when Duvall could return to the lineup -- until Cora’s comments Thursday lined up a strong chance for a return in New York.
Earlier this week, Duvall said that he was hopeful he’d be able to return to the lineup when he becomes eligible to come off the 60-day IL Friday.
“Yeah, that’s the goal,” Duvall said. “That been kind of the mark on the calendar for a while and I think I’m on pace to do that. Hopefully, everything goes well this week.”
The Red Sox wrap up their series in Cleveland Thursday night as they look to win the rubber game before heading to Yankee Stadium.

Red Sox drop below .500: Corey Kluber allows 8 straight hits in ugly loss Published: Jun. 08, 2023, 9:47 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — Corey Kluber got absolutely crushed Thursday back here where his major league career began.
He went 3 ⅓ innings of relief, allowing seven runs, 11 hits (two homers) and one walk while striking out one. The Red Sox lost 10-3 to the Guardians at Progressive Field.
Boston dropped to under .500 at 31-32. It is the first time the Red Sox have been under .500 since April 28 (13-14).
Triston Casas belted his seventh homer and his first since May 16 to cut Boston’s deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. But Cleveland responded with a five-run bottom of the sixth inning against Kluber.
Kluber, who won two Cy Young awards with Cleveland, allowed eight straight hits (homer, single, double, double, triple, single, single single) to lead off the sixth.
Matt Dermody goes 4 innings The Red Sox received heavy criticism for promoting starting pitcher Matt Dermody who posted and eventually deleted a homophobic tweet in 2021.
Dermody had difficulty throwing strikes. He threw 45 of his 76 pitches for strikes (59%). He went 4 innings, giving up three runs, all earned, four hits and one walk while striking out one.
José Ramírez took Dermody deep twice. Ramírez crushed a 392-foot homer to left field against him in the first inning to make it 1-0. Ramírez’s 412-foot, 106.5-mph blast to center field in the third inning made it 3-0.
Ramïrez kept it going after Dermody left the game. The slugger took Kluber 390 feet to right field in the sixth. His third home made it 4-2 Cleveland.

Kluber labors through relief outing, Sox reset bullpen ahead of NY series Right-hander gives up seven runs on 11 hits over 3 1/3 innings in finale vs. Guardians 1:20 AM GMT-3 Ian Browne Ian Browne
@ianmbrowne Share
CLEVELAND – Corey Kluber was back home, pitching off the mound where he experienced the finest moments of his career.
But the comforts of Progressive Field did nothing to help the veteran righty escape the struggles of what has been a nightmarish first season with the Red Sox.
Taken out of the starting rotation a couple of weeks ago, the second inning of Kluber’s third bullpen appearance was a low point in his career. It was an equally forgettable night for the Red Sox, who lost 10-3 Thursday in the rubber match of a three-game series with the Guardians.
When the sixth inning started, Boston was down by just one run at 3-2, and the hope was that Kluber could keep his team in the game.
It wasn’t that big of a surprise when José Ramírez opened the game-breaking frame by hammering a solo shot to right -- his third home run of the night.
What was surprising is that the Guardians shellacked Kluber so emphatically thereafter. They opened the inning with eight straight hits, four of them for extra bases.
“It’s very tough,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “Not only him, but with anybody that we have out there. We were talking about it, they hit the ball hard, they hit it off the end, check swings. It was like he couldn’t buy a break. But he gave us enough. We were able to kind of reset our bullpen and let’s be ready for tomorrow.”
Giving up eight consecutive knocks was a career-first for Kluber, who was Boston’s Opening Day starter this season and a two-time Cy Young Award winner in his days with Cleveland.
Those glory days had to feel like a long time ago for Kluber, who faced 10 batters in that sixth inning, allowing five runs.
In all, Kluber gave up 11 hits and seven runs over 3 1/3 innings, as his ERA swelled to 7.11. At this point, it is fair to wonder how much longer Kluber will hold a roster spot for Boston.
It was a rough development in what has been a shaky couple of weeks for the Red Sox, who have lost five of their last six and are 5-12 since May 21. That rut has dropped Boston below .500 (31-32) for the first time since April 28.
The Red Sox would have preferred to be in better shape as they go to Yankee Stadium for their first rivalry match of the season on Friday.
“At the end of the day, we have to move forward,” said Cora. “That’s what we’re planning on doing. We have to play better baseball. I think that’s the most important thing, at the end of the day. We have to cancel the noise and start playing good baseball.”
Ramírez canceled Boston’s hopes of a happy flight by putting on a display of sheer power. The switch-hitting third baseman had been having an ordinary season leading up to this breakout game.
In a strange way, the prolific performance provided hope to the Red Sox that Rafael Devers, who is performing below expectations (slash line of .243/.298/.472), will soon have his breakout game, week or month.
“You look at [Ramírez’s] numbers and at one point he’s going to get hot, kind of like the way we see Raffy,” said Cora. “He didn’t look too good early on, José, and he had a huge night like this. So hopefully we can have that from our big boy at one point this season.”
As they head to the Bronx, the Red Sox will try to turn their backs on their recent woes and capture the way they were playing for the first three weeks of May.
“It’s not the type of baseball we wanted to play but here we are,” said Cora. “We’re going to New York. We have three games over there. We better play well. They’re a good team, just like these guys and the teams we’ve been playing. Hopefully we can pick it up and start playing well.”

Verdugo benched in finale after lack of hustle vs. Guards June 8th, 2023 Ian Browne Ian Browne
@ianmbrowne Share
CLEVELAND -- Red Sox right fielder Alex Verdugo was benched for Thursday night’s rubber match of a three-game series against the Guardians for a lack of hustle in Wednesday’s loss, according to manager Alex Cora.
The play that irked Cora took place in the top of the seventh inning when Masataka Yoshida tapped an 82.1 mph grounder to first base. Verdugo didn’t run all that hard on the play, and was out by about a step and didn’t slide.
When the Sox went to play defense in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jarren Duran moved from right to center field and Christian Arroyo took Verdugo’s spot in the batting order.
The Boston Globe was first to report that Verdugo’s lack of hustle was the reason he was taken out of Wednesday’s game and not in the lineup on Thursday.
“Yeah, there was a play in the seventh inning I didn't like,” said Cora before Thursday’s game. “We just felt like in that play, his reaction wasn't a great one, you know, obviously, not busting his behind to second. I don't know if he [would have been] out or safe, but I didn't like it.”
Cora said Verdugo would be back in the lineup when the Red Sox open a three-game series against Gerrit Cole and the Yankees on Friday night in New York.
Prior to his meeting with the media on Thursday, Cora brought Verdugo into his office to talk.
“Dugie as a player this year, you know, there's not too many things that we can question, right? Defensively, he's one of the best in the big leagues. Offensively, he’s been solid,” said Cora. “Even baserunning, which is one of the things that he needed to get better, he’s doing a good job.”
The 31-31 Red Sox came into Thursday with a 5-11 mark since May 21 and have played some sloppy baseball, particularly on defense.
“Obviously where we’re at, and I’m not using him as an example because we have to be better in a lot of aspects, but yesterday, I felt like, you know what, that's not acceptable. And he knows it, so I took him out of the game and then today he’s not starting.”
Cora didn’t sound like he would use Verdugo in any situation on Thursday.
In Sunday’s loss to the Rays, Verdugo was involved in one of the ugliest defensive plays of the season for Boston in what wound up being a Little League, two-run homer.
Cora said that play -- a collective meltdown by the Red Sox -- didn’t factor into Thursday’s benching.
“The play the other day, both of them, they have to go after it, you know, you see their reaction,” said Cora. “I think Jarren took Alex for granted. And Alex actually didn't have a great jump. Just you know, off the ball, he didn't see it right away.”
While Cora knows that everyday players have to protect their legs at times over a long season, he didn’t feel like Yoshida’s slow grounder in the seventh inning on Thursday was an appropriate time to do so.
“Like I told him, he plays 155, 150 games, and there's some routine ground balls to second that I'm good with him giving the general effort, and he’s going to be out,” said Cora. “But there’s certain plays that we expect him to just go because they're game-changers. And I'm not saying he was going to be safe or out at second. I’m saying that, if he goes hard, there’s no question, and we can’t question the effort or the decision. Yesterday it just happened that he didn’t hustle to second and I decided to take him out of the game.”
Without Verdugo in the lineup, Cora went with center fielder Duran in the leadoff spot while playing Rob Refsnyder in right field.
