Game 74: Red Sox at Twins lineups and notesBy Andrew Mahoney Globe Staff,Updated June 20, 2023, 2 hours ago Make that five wins in a row for the Red Sox after Monday night’s 9-3 win at Minnesota. The bats have come alive, as the Sox have outscored their opponents 40-14 during the streak, pounding out 56 hits in that span. Bostn has moved to three games above .500, but is still in last place in the American League East, 12 games behind the division-leading Rays. The Twins have now dropped four of five to dip below .500, but still hold a two-game lead in the AL Central. Here are the standings. Kutter Crawford has been more effective as a reliever for the Sox, but with but with Tanner Houck and Chris Sale on the injured list and the organization lacking starter depth in Triple A, the 27-year-old righthander gets the nod tonight. Lineups RED SOX (38-35): 1. Alex Verdugo (L) RF 2. Justin Turner (R) DH 3. Rafael Devers (L) 3B 4. Masataka Yoshida (L) LF 5. Adam Duvall (R) CF 6. Triston Casas (L) 1B 7. Enrique Hernandez (R) 2B 8. Taylor 0-2 Stat of the day: Crawford owns a 5.40 ERA in seven home games (three starts) this season compared to a 2.60 mark in six appearances (two starts) on the road. Notes: The Red Sox are averaging 7.7 runs per game in their last six games. … Verdugo is 17-for-43 with seven RBIs during his 10-game hitting streak … Crawford allowed four runs over four innings in a no-decision against the Rockies on June 13. He is 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA in two career games (one start) against Minnesota. … Ober earned a win on June 14 after allowing two runs and striking out seven over six innings in a 4-2 victory over the Brewers. … He has gone at least five innings in each of his 10 starts this season, striking out 54 while issuing just 14 walks. … This will be Ober’s third time facing the Red Sox. He did not allow an earned run in his previous two starts covering 11 innings. … Byron Buxton is mired in an 0-for-24 slump for the Twins. Pete Abraham @peteabe · 43s #RedSox are tied for the 14th-best record in MLB and have the 12th best run differential but only four teams are further behind in the standings in their respective divisions. Yet only 1.5 behind in the wild card. AL East is nuts.

Crawford, Arroyo carry Sox to 6th straight win 2:16 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
MINNEAPOLIS -- Fair or not, Kutter Crawford was beginning to get a reputation as someone who could be a difference-maker as a long reliever but not as a starter.
His goal of changing that narrative started in earnest on Tuesday night at Target Field. The 27-year-old righty fired five scoreless innings, scattering six hits while walking none and striking out five. This, on a night the Red Sox extended their winning streak to six with a 10-4 victory over the Twins.
Heading into this start, Crawford had the following splits this season: a 7.11 ERA in five starts, covering 19 innings, and a 1.66 ERA in eight relief appearances over 21 2/3 innings.
“I'm confident in my ability [to start],” said Crawford. “I’ve just got to get back in the groove of things. I did it for a good stretch last year and that helps build the confidence, so it's just getting back to that, and getting back to using my mix like I should as a starter and just attacking the zone. But yeah, I'm confident in my ability to be a starter and pitch every five days.” Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
Whichever role Crawford might be best suited for down the line, here is the fact of the matter: The Sox need him in the rotation right now.
Chris Sale (stress reaction in his left shoulder) is out until at least August. Tanner Houck is having surgery for a facial fracture next week and figures to be out for at least several weeks.
This was Crawford’s fourth start since replacing Sale, and the Red Sox have stretched him back out on the fly. They still need to find another pitcher to fill in for Houck, starting with Thursday’s finale of this four-game set against the Twins.
The importance of Crawford becoming dependable in a rotation that also includes James Paxton, Garrett Whitlock and Brayan Bello is high. Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
“I want to be there badly [for the team] and I'm sure everybody else in the rotation and on the pitching staff wants to as well,” said Crawford. “You know, we're down a couple of guys, so some guys need to step up, and I'm sure there's a number of guys on this pitching staff that will.”
As a team, the Red Sox seem to be developing a next-man-up mentality. When Pablo Reyes was scratched shortly before Tuesday’s game with right abdominal soreness, manager Alex Cora inserted Christian Arroyo into the lineup at second base.
All Arroyo did was go 5-for-5 with a homer, a double and four RBIs. It was a career night for Arroyo, whose previous career high for hits in a game was three.
“I’m kind of speechless,” said Arroyo, who finished a triple shy of the cycle. “I’ve never done that before. I think I had one [five-hit game] in the Minor Leagues, but never obviously done it in the big leagues. This is the biggest stage, right? Every hitter dreams of that. It was awesome. It was great.”
It was only a week ago that it seemed like the Red Sox couldn’t buy a run. Suddenly, they are firing on all cylinders again as an offense, with Cora pushing all the right buttons.
Jarren Duran went 3-for-3 with three doubles in Monday’s game and there were some eyebrows raised when he wasn’t in Tuesday’s lineup. But Cora is committed to Adam Duvall getting regular time in the lineup, and the veteran center fielder rewarded that decision with a rocket homer to center to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Cora has been pleased with the functionality of his position-player roster during the current winning streak, but the starting pitching will determine if the Red Sox can be a legitimate contender for a postseason spot.
With his deep arsenal of pitches, Crawford thinks he can be an important piece. In Tuesday’s performance, Crawford led with his four-seamer, throwing 28 of them to go with 21 cutters, 11 knuckle curves, nine sweepers and eight splitters.
“It’s good he can do that,” said Cora. “But he can get in trouble trying to be too cute. I think the stuff plays, and the first four pitches of the game were four-seamer, cutter, curveball and split. It's kind of like going to the buffet and you’ve got all this stuff. Don’t get too greedy because you’ve got all the tools. His four-seamer is a good one. So now it's just a matter of how to use it, what you’ve got that day and go from there.”

Injuries & Moves: Houck to have surgery next week June 20th, 2023
June 20: RHP Tanner Houck (facial fracture) to have surgery next week Houck will have surgery to have a plate inserted into his face next week, Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced on Tuesday. The righty suffered a facial fracture on June 16 when he was hit just under the right eye by a batted ball against the Yankees. Despite the development that Houck will need surgery, the Red Sox weren't able to provide a timetable for his return to action. Cora did say it's a sure thing Houck will pitch again this season. In fact, Cora feels the Red Sox and Houck are fortunate the injury isn't worse.
"We actually talked about it the other day, it was close enough to the eye, but he’s OK," Cora said. "Obviously, it wasn’t off the temple. Sounds bad, right? Fracture. But the fact that he knows he's going to be part of this [again this season] is good. It’s the best news we could get.”
June 20: INF Pablo Reyes removed from lineup with right abdominal soreness Roughly 20 minutes before the first pitch of Tuesday night's game against the Twins, shortstop Reyes was scratched from the lineup due to right abdominal soreness. Kiké Hernández moved from second base to shortstop. Christian Arroyo was inserted into the lineup at second base. Reyes has been Boston's primary shortstop in recent days, slashing .308/.343/.369 this season while playing solid defense.
LHP Joely Rodríguez (left shoulder inflammation) Expected return: Possibly this weekend Rodríguez started a Minor League rehab assignment on June 20 with Triple-A Worcester. He threw off the main mound at Fenway Park on June 16. Rodríguez is expected to make at least two rehab appearances before he comes back. There's a chance he will be activated by the Red Sox during the road series in Chicago from June 23-25. Rodríguez is serving his second stint on the injured list this season, this one due to left shoulder inflammation that has prevented him from pitching for Boston since May 31. (Last updated: June 20)

MINNEAPOLIS — Christian Arroyo wasn’t even in Tuesday’s Red Sox lineup until 23 minutes before first pitch, when shortstop Pablo Reyes was scratched with abdominal soreness. That didn’t stop Arroyo from leading a red-hot Boston offense with a career night at Target Field.
Arroyo was 5-for-5 with four RBIs as the Sox won their sixth straight game with a 10-4 rout of the reeling Twins. Adam Duvall and Masataka Yoshida also homered behind righty Kutter Crawford, who held the Twins scoreless for five innings in his best outing since being placed back in the rotation earlier this month.
The teams traded zeroes until the fourth, when Duvall took starter Bailey Ober deep for his first homer since April, then Arroyo made it a 2-0 game with a rocket solo shot two batters later. In the sixth, after Arroyo singled to put Masataka Yoshida in scoring position, Connor Wong chopped a grounder through the right side to make it 3-0.
Justin Turner (RBI double) and Yoshida (RBI single) each drove in runs in the seventh before Arroyo laced a bases-clearing, three-run double down the right field line to break things open and secure the first four-hit game of his career. In the eighth, Yoshida’s first homer of June (a 447-footer to right field) made it a double-digit game.
Crawford, making his third start since rejoining the rotation on June 3, entered with a 7.11 ERA in the rotation this season but held a sleepy Twins offense at bay. Minnesota tagged Crawford for six hits in five innings but was unable to push a run across; the righty struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.
Minnesota’s only offense of the night came in the late when the Twins launched three homers off reliever Corey Kluber, who entered in mop-up duty. Byron Buxton launched a two-run homer shot in the eighth, then Royce Lewis and Max Kepler went back-to-back in the ninth to make it 10-4. Kluber how has a 7.04 ERA this season and, after pitching three innings, recorded his first career save.
Arroyo has career night
Arroyo’s five-hit game was the first of his career — and his first ever with more than three hits. Arroyo now has 10 extra-base hits in his last 18 games (seven doubles and three homers).
Arroyo’s performance marked the first 5+ hit game by a Red Sox player since Rafael Devers went 6-for-6 with four doubles in Cleveland on Aug. 13, 2019.
Sox keep rolling
Boston’s six-game win streak is the longest such active streak in the American League and the second-longest of the season for the Red Sox, who won eight in a row from April 29 to May 6. Boston is back to four games above .500 at 39-35.
The Red Sox are 10-4 against American League Central opponents this year and are 18-17 on the road.
Whitlock on tap for Wednesday
The Red Sox have won Garrett Whitlock’s last four starts and will look to keep that streak rolling when the righty (4-2, 4.38 ERA) takes the mound against the Twins and Sonny Gray (4-1, 2.37 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:40 p.m. ET.
The teams will then play a matinee finale Thursday before the Red Sox take off for a three-game series against the White Sox which begins in Chicago on Friday.

Speedy Red Sox prospect on way to Minnesota, may be activated for MLB debut

MINNEAPOLIS — Speedy Red Sox prospect David Hamilton is en route to Minnesota as a potential candidate to replace the injured Pablo Reyes on Boston’s roster Wednesday, two sources said. Reyes, who was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with right abdominal soreness, is day-to-day and will be reevaluated in the coming days.
Reyes felt sore while taking grounders before the game and was replaced in the lineup by Christian Arroyo, who went 5-for-5 with four RBIs in a blowout Sox win. Hamilton was pulled from his game at Triple-A Worcester in case he needed to join the big league club.
“(Reyes) was sore in the beginning so we’re just waiting. Day-to-day,” Cora said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Hamilton, who is on the 40-man roster, is the next man up should the Red Sox need to add some shortstop depth. Ranked as the organization’s No. 19 overall prospect by SoxProspects.com, Hamilton is more of a sure thing defensively than Enmanuel Valdez, who played second base during his stint in the majors earlier this year and is not considered an option at shortstop. Hamilton is also off to a strong start at the plate this season; entering Tuesday, he had hit .256 with 11 homers, 25 RBIs, 27 steals and an .828 OPS in 51 games for the WooSox. Last season, he stole 70 bases at Double-A Portland.
Hamilton was acquired along with fellow minor leaguer Alex Binelas in the Dec. 2021 trade that sent outfielder Hunter Renfroe to the Brewers for Jackie Bradley Jr. If he does get in a game, it will be his major league debut.
Reyes has emerged as a consistent piece for the Red Sox since being acquired in a minor trade with the Athletics in May. Kiké Hernández’s throwing errors forced manager Alex Cora to make a change at shortstop last week, with the sure-handed Reyes starting six of the last seven games at the position. Reyes has hit .308 with four doubles and a .712 OPS in 25 games this year.
If Hamilton is activated, it’s likely he and Hernández will split time at shortstop with Arroyo starting at second base.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 7h Corey Kluber has thrown 55 innings, with a 6.8 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 2.8 HR/9, 30% GB%, 7.04 ERA, 7.13 FIP, and 5.71 xFIP.
If he wants to hang out in the dugout and talk pitching that would be awesome, but it is unacceptable that he is still on the Red Sox 13-man pitching staff.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo has been on a tear since benching By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated June 20, 2023, 8:52 p.m.
MINNEAPOLIS — Earlier this month, when the Red Sox were sputtering, manager Alex Cora benched outfielder Alex Verdugo for a day after what he saw as disappointing effort on the bases. The 27-year-old didn’t love the decision, but he also didn’t take it lightly.
Verdugo entered Tuesday’s 10-4 win over the Twins carrying a 10-game hitting streak that started with his return from the benching. In that time, he was hitting .395/.447/.558, including an active streak of seven games in which he’d reached base multiple times, the longest of his career. Verdugo went 1 for 5 Tuesday and scored a run.
“He always responds. I want Dugie to play at this level all the time,” Cora said, raising his right hand above his head. “This guy, five, six years ago, they were talking about him like a five-tool player, and I think we’re getting the closest version of that. There’s more there but we’ll take him the way he’s been playing here.”
Verdugo agreed with Cora’s assessment that this has been the best display of his talent. He entered Tuesday hitting .303 (sixth among big league outfielders) with a .377 OBP (sixth), .467 slugging (23rd), and .844 OPS (15th). He’s playing above-average defense in right field and running the bases well.
One year after he sometimes fell into ruts of rollover ground outs, Verdugo has remained more committed to being a gap-to-gap hitter who takes pride in leading the American League in doubles (24).
“I know the type of hitter I am,” said Verdugo. “Doubles are still really good. It puts you in a really good spot to score and just help your team. I think that’s one thing I’m doing better. I’m not getting caught up with all the numbers. I’m just trying to have fun, hit the ball, and put my team in the best position to win.”
Verdugo leads the Sox by a sizable margin in every Wins Above Replacement calculation, while ranking among the elite in the AL. His season line is similar to Masataka Yoshida (.303/.377/.467 for Verdugo, .302/.375/.473 for Yoshida) with better defense and base running.
With that similarity comes curiosity. The Sox spent $105.4 million to sign Yoshida for the next five years. So what might Verdugo, who has better secondary skills, be worth when he’s eligible for free agency after the 2024 season?
“It’s always in the back of your mind, because you don’t know where you’re going to go. You don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Verdugo. “You have your days where you think about it, but you won’t know until you get there. I’ve got to still go out there and play and do good and just do everything I can to help us win. However they and we want to handle it, that’s how it happens.”
Verdugo said he hasn’t had any talks about a deal that would keep him in Boston beyond his eligibility for free agency. He made clear he’d be open to such conversations, but also expressed no urgency.
“All in good time. It will happen when it happens,” said Verdugo. “I’m all ears. I do love Boston. I’ve been saying it for many years. I’ve really been able to come into my own in this organization. I like it a lot.” Surgery for Houck
Righthander Tanner Houck, who suffered a facial fracture last week when a liner from Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka hit him on the right cheek, will undergo surgery next week to have a plate inserted.
While the Sox do not have a timetable for Houck’s return, they are confident he will pitch again this year.
“He is pitching,” said Cora. “The fact that he knows he’s going to be part of [the team this season] is good, it’s the best news we could get.” Related: Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck will undergo surgery next week for facial fracture
Cora described the outcome as something close to a “best-case scenario” given that the ball missed his eye and his temple. He said Houck (3-6, 5.05 ERA in 13 starts) was heartened by the clear path moving forward.
“Getting rest and knowing what’s going to happen, obviously knowing that he’ll be part of this whenever he gets back, it’s a good feeling,” said Cora.
Though the Sox have avoided offering a timetable — and have not identified the specific fracture(s) — there is a comparable recent case that offers general insight. In late August 2021, Chris Bassitt suffered a broken cheekbone on a liner. One week after the injury, he underwent surgery. With no minor league season for rehab outings, Bassitt returned directly to the big leagues 30 days after the surgery, albeit while capped at three innings. Reyes scratched
Shortstop Pablo Reyes was scratched shortly before Tuesday’s game because of what the team described as right abdominal soreness he experienced while taking pregame groundballs. Cora described him as day to day. When the injury occurred, the Sox pulled middle infielder David Hamilton from the WooSox game in case he was needed for a call-up. The team also pulled Enmanuel Valdez because of a jammed thumb … Lefthander Joely Rodriguez, on the injured list since June 4 with left shoulder inflammation, made a rehab appearance for Worcester, allowing two hits with a strikeout while facing four batters and throwing 15 pitches. His sinker registered at 89-92 miles per hour. He’s expected to make another rehab appearance in two days, at which point the Sox will determine additional rehab steps.
Voting results
In the latest voting results for the All-Star Game, Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves (2.2 million) and Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (1.9 million) are the leading vote-getters. No Red Sox players are in position to advance to the “run-off” round, which will feature voting among the top two vote-getters at each position (and top six first-round vote recipients in the outfield).
Yoshida is the only Red Sox with a shot to advance to the run-off round. He ranks eighth among outfielders. First-round voting for starters at MLB.com closes at noon on Thursday.

Red Sox @ Twins Wednesday, June 21rst, 2023 7:30pm @ Target Field
Whitlock 4-2/ 4.38
Gray 4-1/ 2.37
Written by The Tower
Game three of four between AL playoff hopefuls is set for Wednesday night. The Boston Red Sox (38-35) are still in Minneapolis, looking to take down the Minnesota Twins (36-37) yet again. Boston took three of the first four meetings against the Twins this season, including Monday's series opener. Another opportunity is knocking for the Red Sox, although Minnesota needs wins just as badly. Target Field will welcome both teams at 7:40 p.m. EDT, as they battle for a victory.
Red Sox Streaking Monday's series-opening win was Boston's fifth in a row. Things were looking bleak just a week ago, but now the Red Sox are squarely in the mix for an AL Wild Card spot. Scoring has seldom been an issue for this club, but strong pitching performances have spurred these recent wins. Garrett Whitlock is ready to keep the ball rolling. Whitlock's last four starts, all since returning to the rotation, have led to Red Sox wins. He's allowed nine runs (eight earned) since returning from the IL, and four of those runs came in one start. In the 23.0 innings he's pitched since coming back, Whitlock has only walked four batters. Boston has to like their chances with him on the mound.
With an offense that's sixth in runs per game this season, the pitching staff just needs to keep games manageable. They score by putting the ball in play and finding gaps. The Red Sox are sixth in strikeout percentage and first in doubles. It helps at home because they can pepper the Green Monster, but it plays well on the road too. Boston is top 10 in average, OBP, and slugging. In the heart of the order is Rafael Devers, who is second in RBIs this season.
Twins Unraveling Playing in the only division with no winning teams, Minnesota's mission toward reclaiming the AL Central title is the easiest in baseball. All they had to do was keep their record slightly above .500 and they'd be up on the closest team by a handful of games. Instead, they've lost four of five, have a 5-10 record since June 3, and have kept three of their rivals alive in the standings.
That's with a pitching staff that's third in ERA. The Twins have a pair of Cy Young candidates, and one of them, Sonny Gray, is in line to start this game. Gray is the American League leader in FIP and MLB leader in HR/9 this season. He's only allowed one home run through 76.0 innings pitched in 2023. Gray also owns a 1.96 home ERA after eight starts. He faced Boston in April, allowing only one run across 5.0 innings. He should experience similar success this time around, and the bullpen behind him is stellar.
The offense needs to find ways to score runs if Minnesota wants to win. Sure, the Twins are the highest-scoring team in the AL Central, but they're only 20th among the 30 MLB teams. Only the Royals and White Sox were scoring fewer runs per game in June before Tuesday's games. They excel at hitting homers and drawing walks, but that's about it. No team in the league strikes out at a higher rate, and only one club has fewer stolen bases.
Red Sox at Twins Wednesday, at 7:40 PM EST Clear It's expected to be 91° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 10 MPH wind blowing right to left in Minneapolis at 7:40 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com

Is patience about to pay off for the Red Sox?
By Rob Bradford WEEI 93.7 an hour ago Maybe it will take a turn for the worse. But for now, the Red Sox have to like the way things are trending. What the Sox have to avoid is following nice win streaks by those losing streaks of getting swept by a team and only winning 2 of 10. And we have to avoid anymore significant injuries. And Devers needs to get it going.
