MINNEAPOLIS — The Red Sox are swapping out rookie left-handers before arriving in Chicago for a three-game series against the White Sox this weekend.
According to sources, Boston optioned Brandon Walter to Triple-A Worcester after his major league debut Thursday and plans to recall Chris Murphy to meet the team at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday.
Walter, a former 26th-round pick, settled down after a rocky start in Thursday’s series finale against the Twins and pitched 6 ⅔ relief innings, allowing three runs on six hits while recording two strikeouts. A minor league starter, Walter came in relief of opener Justin Garza, who struggled and recorded just four outs in Boston’s 6-0 loss. Walter will return to the rotation at Triple-A Worcester and will be a candidate to make starts in the majors as the season progresses.
Murphy was recently converted from a starter to reliever at Triple-A and has been dominant in two outings out of the major league bullpen. In six innings over two June appearances, the 25-year-old has allowed just three hits while striking out eight batters. He will provide the Red Sox with a long relief option in the coming weeks. Murphy was not eligible to be recalled from the minors until Friday, 15 days after being optioned June 8. His appearance during Sunday’s doubleheader was a special circumstance because he was appointed the club’s 27th man for the twin bill against the Yankees.
Friday’s moves provide a hint as to how the Red Sox plan to fill the fifth spot in their rotation with Tanner Houck (facial fracture) joining Chris Sale (shoulder) on the injured list late last week. Instead of promoting Walter to the rotation on a full-time basis, the club appears likely to have bullpen games every five days for the foreseeable future. Though two days off in the the next 11 days would give the Sox a chance to stick to a four-man rotation of Brayan Bello, James Paxton, Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock, the team plans to give its starters more rest and keep a five-man group. That means the fifth spot will come up again Wednesday against the Marlins at Fenway Park. Murphy will likely take on a multi-inning role in that game.
