Pete Abraham @peteabe · 2h Happy Canada Day from Rogers Centre. 🇨🇦
This is a great trip for for #RedSox fans. Easy flight on awesome @porterairlines into downtown, lots of hotels walking distance to the park, Hockey Hall of Fame close by, top-notch restaurants, nice people, etc. Highly recommended.
James Paxton's paternity leave will start Tuesday. He'll pitch in the Oakland series. They're still mapping it out.
Paxton came to the park today, got his work in and went back to Boston. His 20-month old son, who will soon have a sister, watched some of the game last night.

Had a few friends at the park last night they were telling they expect another huge crowd today unsure if the roof will be open due to the wild fire smoke, but the big Canadian Flag will be out and they will honor some veterans like they do every Canada Day Jays will be in their Canada Day red gear.

Verdugo pays back teammates with 9th-inning heroics Red Sox take series in Toronto, move to 6-0 against Blue Jays this season 51 minutes ago Julia Kreuz Julia Kreuz
TORONTO -- Alex Verdugo’s vision went into split screen as he made his game-winning throw to home plate.
All that stood between the Red Sox and a series win against the Blue Jays on Saturday was Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who stepped up with two out and runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth inning at Rogers Centre. Tasked with preserving Boston’s two-run lead, Kenley Jansen watched as Guerrero swatted a 96 mph cutter to right field for a single.
By the time Verdugo got to it, George Springer had already scored from third to cut the lead to one run. But while Bo Bichette hesitated as he rounded the bag on his way home, Verdugo was decisive in his throw to catcher Connor Wong.
“Once I throw it, man, it's kind of like, your eyes do like this,” Verdugo said, quickly pointing at different directions. “You're looking at home plate, trying to find the ball to make sure it's online, and then you're going to the runner and you're like, ‘Oh God, oh God.’”
Verdugo didn’t really need to hold his breath. The throw was right on target as it one-hopped in front of Wong, who easily tagged Bichette to seal the Red Sox’s 7-6 win over the Blue Jays.
“He's one of the best, if not the best, defensive right fielders in the American League,” said manager Alex Cora of Verdugo. “That was a great throw.”
The magnitude of the moment made it even better.
Verdugo’s heroics ensured a narrow win in a game that saw the Red Sox build a 6-2 lead in the middle innings. The visitors never surrendered the advantage, but as Josh Winckowski allowed three unanswered runs, things got way more interesting than expected.
“Today was everybody picking up each other,” said Jansen, who labored for a four-out save after Winckowski ran into trouble with two out in the eighth. “I picked up Winck and then Dugie picked me up. So, it’s a great team win.”
The way Verdugo sees it, he was just paying back his teammates’ kindness. The 27-year-old went hitless on Saturday as part of a seven-game stretch in which he’s posted a .247 batting average with a .637 OPS -- far from the impressive numbers he’s sported this season overall.
“I can't hit water if I fell out of a boat,” Verdugo joked. “I'm grinding up there, but the boys are out there, just doing what they have to do, putting up good at bats and really picking me up [while] I'm a little bit off right now.”
Leading the charge offensively was Rafael Devers, who hit a two-run homer in the third inning to give the Red Sox the lead, then added another two hits and one RBI.
Cora’s plan was to give Devers the day off on Saturday, since the Rogers Centre turf can be a bit taxing on players’ knees and backs. But the third baseman wasn’t interested in sitting this one out.
“He asked me if I wanted the day off, and I said that I didn’t, I was fine,” Devers said, in Spanish. “I’ve always had a good time here. I hit well and I see the ball well here.”
Devers entered the game with a .913 OPS in 33 contests at Rogers Centre. That third-inning homer -- his 20th of the season -- travelled a Statcast-projected 418 feet to left-center field after a seven-pitch matchup with lefty starter Yusei Kikuchi.
He later singled to right and doubled to center en route to his fourth three-hit effort of the season.
“He's controlling the zone, and when you start hitting the ball to left-center, good things happen,” said Cora. “It’s fun to watch.”
Boston ended up needing all of Devers’ production to come away with its first series win since sweeping the Yankees at Fenway Park on June 18. After struggling against AL East opponents last year, the Red Sox were set on improving within their division this season.
Toronto has experienced that first-hand. With Saturday’s win, the Red Sox tied a franchise record against the Blue Jays by reaching a 6-0 mark against them.
“The biggest thing for us is playing better in our division,” said Verdugo. “When we win those games, it’s meaningful. The division makes some steps, we actually catch ground, things like that. … It’s big. It's something that we know we need and, you know, just have to step up against our own division.”

Injuries & Moves: Yoshida hit by 102 mph fastball, X-rays negative 48 minutes ago
July 1: OF Masataka Yoshida exits after HBP Yoshida's X-rays came back negative after he took a 102 mph fastball to the upper part of his right calf in the seventh inning of Boston's 7-6 win over Toronto on Saturday. The slugger was wearing a shin guard, but the pitch from Blue Jays reliever Nate Pearson hit Yoshida in an unprotected area, causing him to immediately drop to the ground in clear pain as Boston's trainers rushed to the box to check on him. The 29-year-old originally stayed in the game to run the bases, but he was removed in the following inning with what the Red Sox called a right lower leg contusion.
Manager Alex Cora says Yoshida is "sore," and the club will re-evaluate him ahead of the series finale on Sunday. After homering in the series opener against Toronto, Yoshida added two hits and one RBI prior to his exit.
LHP Joely Rodríguez (left shoulder inflammation) Expected return: Early July "There's a good chance" Rodríguez will be activated from the 15-day IL during the Red Sox's homestand that begins on July 4, manager Alex Cora said on July 1. The left-hander pitched one scoreless inning in back-to-back rehab outings with Double-A Portland on June 29 and June 30. That Friday frame marked Rodríguez's fifth rehab appearance as he recovers from left shoulder inflammation.
"We'll see how he rebounds today, how he feels today," said Cora on July 1. "We'll see where we are during the week and then we'll make a decision."
Rodríguez has been sidelined since the beginning of June with this shoulder issue. He was placed on the 15-day IL on June 4, retroactive to June 1, after pitching just four Major League innings this season. (Last updated: July 1)
INF Pablo Reyes (abdominal strain) Expected return: Early July Reyes will appear in a rehab game with Double-A Portland on July 3, according to manager Alex Cora. The infielder was scratched from Boston's lineup on June 20 in Minnesota. He pinch-ran on June 21 and returned to the lineup the next day, but exited after one plate appearance. On June 23, Cora said Reyes was sore and the Red Sox were being cautious.
"We took it out of his hands," Cora said of the IL move. "Hopefully he can be back sooner rather than later." (Last updated: July 1)

Red Sox win: Alex Verdugo throws out Bo Bichette at plate for final out Updated: Jul. 01, 2023, 9:16 p.m.|Published: Jul. 01, 2023, 6:40 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com TORONTO — Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen recorded his first save of four or more outs since May 14, 2022 during a wild ninth inning Saturday.
The Red Sox held on to win 7-6 as Alex Verdugo threw out Bo Bichette at the plate to end it.
Starting pitcher Kutter Crawford was in the tub watching the bottom of the ninth inning on TV.
“I was watching it unfold,” Crawford said. “And I knew that ball was hit hard and (Verdugo) needed to make a good throw. Dugie did that. He put it right on the money. I think Bichette, he hesitated. But he was out either way. So it’s kind of a roller coaster of emotions there. But glad Dugie made the good throw and we got him out.”
Jansen struck out Kevin Kiermaier to begin the ninth, then allowed a single to George Springer and a double to Bo Bichette.
With two runners in scoring position, Jansen struck out Brandon Belt swinging.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then singled to right field. But Verdugo threw a one-hopper to the plate to throw out Bichette by a couple of feet.
“Vladdy hit it hard,” Verdugo said. “And on the turf, the ball is skipping. So you know you’re going to get it quick. So for me, I didn’t think he was going to go. But we still did everything the same like if he was. Just put the throw right there. Long hop it. No reason to get crazy with it. Just try to get rid of it as quick as I can and throw it right on the money. And we were able to do that.”
Verdugo said he intentionally one-hopped the throw.
“I don’t want to throw it all the way there,” Verdugo said. “I’m not a big fan of that. Some people obviously love to air it out and let it rip and that’s great. But I think with times like that, you tend to short hop guys, maybe overthrow (it). So for me, I’m just trying to get that long hop. I’m trying to always make it a little bit easier for the guy receiving the throw to be able to catch it and put the tag down.”

Crawford didn’t leap out of the tub to celebrate.
“No, no. I was in the cold tub so my body was a little stiff,” Crawford said, smiling.
It marked Verdugo’s sixth assist this season.
“He’s one of the best, if not the best, defensive right fielders in the American League,” manager Alex Cora said. “That was a great throw. We did enough today. It’s not exactly the way we drew it. At the end, we ended up winning the game. I think last year that game, probably we’d be having a beer and talking about how we blew that game. And this year, we won that one.”
Red Sox are 6-0 vs. Blue Jays
The Red Sox lost 16 of 19 games against the Blue Jays last season. Toronto outscored them by 70 runs.
The script has completely flipped this season. Rafael Devers stroked three hits, including a homer and the Red Sox improved to 6-0 with a positive-19 run differential against the Blue Jays this season.
Boston improved to .500 (42-42), three games behind Toronto for fourth place in the AL East. The Blue Jays are 7-19 vs. AL East opponents.
Crawford earns win
Crawford gave up a leadoff homer to George Springer but then settled in to pitch 5 ⅔ strong innings. He allowed two runs, three hits (two homers) and two walks while striking out five. He recorded 14 swings and misses, including seven with his four-seam fastball.
Rafael Devers puts Red Sox ahead
Manager Alex Cora asked Rafael Devers if he wanted the day off. Devers told him, ‘No.” Good decision.
Devers put the Red Sox ahead 2-1 in the third inning with a 418-foot home run to left-center field.
The Blue Jays tied it in the third but Boston scored three times in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Justin Turner stroked an RBI double. Devers and Masataka Yoshida both delivered RBI singles.
Verdugo’s sac fly to right field made it 6-2 Red Sox in the sixth.
Turner homered in the ninth to make it 7-5 after the Blue Jays had cut it to 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth.
Blue Jays rally in eighth
Josh Winckowski struck out Bo Bichette and Brandon Belt to begin the eighth inning.
But Winckowski then allowed a walk to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and a two-run home run to Matt Chapman to cut it to 6-5.
Winckowski was pulled from the game after allowing a single and walk following the home run. Kenley Jansen entered and struck out Cavan Biggio swinging to keep it a 6-5 game.
Jansen had not recorded a save of four or more outs since May 14, 2022.
