Red Sox’s Alex Verdugo on throw home: ‘I didn’t think he was going to go’ Updated: Jul. 01, 2023, 9:23 p.m.|Published: Jul. 01, 2023, 9:15 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com TORONTO — Red Sox right fielder Alex Verdugo didn’t expect Bo Bichette to try to score the game-tying run when Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled sharply with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning against closer Kenley Jansen.
Bichette tried to score from second base after Springer scored from third base on Guerrero’s hit.
“Vladdy hit it hard,” Verdugo said. “And on the turf, the ball is skipping. So you know you’re going to get it quick. So for me, I didn’t think he was going to go. But we still did everything the same like if he was. Just put the throw right there. Long hop it. No reason to get crazy with it. Just try to get rid of it as quick as I can and throw it right on the money. And we were able to do that.”
Verdugo was focused on fielding the ball cleanly.
“For me, as I’m seeing the play go, I’m like, ‘Secure the ball. Get the ball in the glove Don’t rush that part of it.’ And once I get it, I’m just trying to get rid of it as quick as I can,” Verdugo said.
Verdugo said his eyes were darting back and forth between the baseball and Bichette.
“You’re looking at home plate trying to find the ball, make sure it’s on line and then you’re going to the runner and you’re like, Oh, God. Oh, God,” Verdugo said. “I saw pretty quick that my throw was on line and I was just kind of looking at Bo and seeing Wong with the ball and Bo was not even in the hitting circle area. So I was like, ‘All right. All right.’”
Verdugo purposely threw it on a long hop.
“I don’t want to throw it all the way there,” Verdugo said. “I’m not a big fan of that. Some people obviously love to air it out and let it rip and that’s great. But I think with times like that, you tend to short hop guys, maybe overthrow (it). So for me, I’m just trying to get that long hop. I’m trying to always make it a little bit easier for the guy receiving the throw to be able to catch it and put the tag down.”
It was Verdugo’s sixth assist of the season.
“He’s one of the best, if not the best, defensive right fielders in the American League,” manager Alex Cora said. “That was a great throw. We did enough today. It’s not exactly the way we drew it. At the end, we ended up winning the game. I think last year that game, probably we’d be having a beer and talking about how we blew that game. And this year, we won that one.”
Cora said Bichette “hesitated” and so he knew from his vantage point that Verdugo was going to throw him out.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 4h Red Sox wins and losses. The level of back-and-forth whiplash is unbelievable. It would be incredibly typical for these players to now play well against Toronto and Texas and then play down and get embarrassed by Oakland, Chicago, and Oakland again. For better or worse, this season deserves a book. 11-1 against the NYY and TO, and 0-9 against Mia, StL & PT. A model of inconsistency.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 2h Happy Canada Day from Rogers Centre. 🇨🇦
This is a great trip for for #RedSox fans. Easy flight on awesome @porterairlines into downtown, lots of hotels walking distance to the park, Hockey Hall of Fame close by, top-notch restaurants, nice people, etc. Highly recommended.
James Paxton's paternity leave will start Tuesday. He'll pitch in the Oakland series. They're still mapping it out.
Paxton came to the park today, got his work in and went back to Boston. His 20-month old son, who will soon have a sister, watched some of the game last night. I used to go to TO with some frequency. It was only at the very end, when I got a new TO boss, that he told me about Porter Air and landing downtown. That was a great tip.

Had a few friends at the park last night they were telling they expect another huge crowd today unsure if the roof will be open due to the wild fire smoke, but the big Canadian Flag will be out and they will honor some veterans like they do every Canada Day Jays will be in their Canada Day red gear. Good luck with Canada Day, thought not necessarily in Toronto. Is this the same wildfire or a new one, because it feels like this has been going on a long time.

Red Sox Nation Stats @rsnstats · 3h #RedSox Kenley Jansen: "Team win. That's how I see it, man. Great effort from everybody." Says, "Today was everybody picking up each other. I picked up [Winckowski], and then [Verdugo] picked me up…that's how we got to keep doing it, man." Jansen is another one of those dudes that always says the right thing, without being evasive or coy.

There are hundreds burning across the country, the big one that was here is finally done with, but the ones in Quebec are still bad and the smoke sags over central Canada and makes its way south.

A pair of AL East rivals do battle as they finish off a weekend series in search of a win north of the border. The Boston Red Sox are on the road as they play the final game of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday afternoon. In the opening game of the series, Boston drew first blood in the series as they rolled to a 5-0 victory Friday night to run their mark to 5-0 against the Blue Jays this season. Will the Red Sox extend their dominance in the season series or can the Blue Jays find a way to get the win here? This article was published prior to the conclusion of the middle game of the set at Rogers Centre Saturday afternoon.
Red Sox Looking to Earn Series Win on the Road Boston had dropped five straight and seven of eight before taking the opening game of this series Friday night on the road. The Red Sox entered Saturday 41-42 on the year and were in the cellar of the AL East, 15 games behind the Rays for the top spot in the division. On Friday night, Boston used the long ball as Justin Turner (his 12th), Jarren Duran (his fourth) and Masataka Yoshida (his ninth) each went deep in the contest. Yoshida finished with three hits as the lone Red Sox player with more than one in the win. James Paxton (4-1) earned the win as he tossed 7.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, before turning things over to the bullpen to close it out.
Garrett Whitlock is on the bump for the Red Sox here as he makes his 10th start of the season in this contest. He comes in 4-3 with a 5.15 ERA, a 1.322 WHIP, seven walks and 46 strikeouts over 50.2 innings of work this season. Whitlock took the loss in his last start, which came Tuesday at home against the Marlins. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in a game Boston lost 10-1. In his last three starts, Whitlock is 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP, one walk and 20 strikeouts over 18.2 innings of work. Whitlock makes his 10th career appearance and second start against the Blue Jays in this contest. He is 2-1 with one save, a 0.61 ERA, a 1.227 WHIP, three walks and 14 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work against them. Whitlock is 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, two walks and five strikeouts over five innings in two appearances, one start, in his career at Rogers Centre.
Toronto Blue Jays Hoping to Rebound In Series Finale Toronto lost for just the second time in their last six games as they were blanked in the opening game of this series Friday night. The Blue Jays entered Saturday 45-38 on the year and stood fourth in the AL East, 11 games behind the Rays for the top spot in the division. On Friday night, Toronto was held in check offensively as they mustered only three hits, all singles, in the loss. The lack of offensive production doomed Jose Berrios (8-6) to defeat in the game. He allowed four runs on five hits, including three homers, with no walks and eight strikeouts over six innings of work before leaving the contest.
Kevin Gausman is on the mound for the Blue Jays as he makes his 18th start of the season in this contest. He is 7-4 with a 3.01 ERA, a 1.127 WHIP, 26 walks and 139 strikeouts over 104.2 innings of work this year. Gausman took the loss in his last start, which came at home against the Giants on Tuesday night. He threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts in a game Toronto eventually dropped 3-0. In his last three starts, Gausman is 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, four walks and 22 strikeouts over 18 innings of work. Gausman makes his 28th career appearance and 23rd start against the Red Sox in this contest. He comes in 7-9 with a 4.48 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, 32 walks and 133 strikeouts over 126.2 innings of work against them. Gausman is 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, four walks and 30 strikeouts over 24.2 innings in five career starts at Rogers Centre.

Red Sox injuries: Trevor Story to face John Schreiber in live BP Tuesday

TORONTO — John Schreiber will face Trevor Story in a live batting practice session Tuesday at Fenway Park.
“Twenty-five pitches, live BP,” manager Alex Cora said Sunday before the Red Sox’s series finale against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
The Red Sox have not yet established a timetable for Story’s return. The shortstop underwent elbow surgery in January.
Story said June 12 that he expects to be able to play shortstop for the Red Sox sometime in August. His injury requires a longer buildup for throwing than hitting and so Story said he is preparing for the possibility of being activated as the designated hitter at some point in July.
Schreiber is on the 60-day injured list (retroactive to May 16) with a right teres major strain. Other Red Sox injuries
~ Adam Duvall is sick and not in the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays.
~ Masataka Yoshida also is not in the Red Sox lineup after getting drilled in the leg with a 101.8 mph pitch Saturday. X-rays were negative. He has a right lower leg contusion. “Sore, sore, very sore,” Cora said about Yoshida’s leg. “So hopefully we don’t have to use him.”
~ Yu Chang (returning from wrist surgery) played five innings at shortstop in a rehab game for Double-A Portland on Saturday. He’s scheduled to play nine innings at shortstop for Portland on Monday. He was Portland’s DH on Friday and has gone 0-for-7 combined playing back-to-back days. He has Sunday off.
~ Pablo Reyes (abdominal strain) initially was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Portland on Monday. The Red Sox have pushed him back to Tuesday. “He’s going to run the bases today,” Cora said. “He’ll go through a full workout tomorrow at Fenway and then he’ll play Tuesday.”
~ Richard Bleier will pitch Sunday (today) for Portland at New Hampshire. It will be his first rehab appearance. The lefty reliever has been sidelined since May 22 because of left shoulder inflammation.

No clue what is going on with Whitlock I have the Sportsnet feed and they did mention activity in the Red Sox pen
in an ideal world, not Bloom Ball, Whitlock would be in the pen and not in the starting roto.....
