HOUSTON — Jarren Duran, who the Red Sox placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left great toe sprain, has been placed in a walking boot. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the Red Sox need “more information” after the speedy outfielder underwent an MRI on Tuesday.
“When he gets home, he’s going to see the doctor,” Cora said before Boston’s game against the Astros at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday. “For now, we’re going to put him in a walking boot. So just gathering more information. We should know more about it over the weekend.”
The Red Sox will fly home from their 10-game road trip after Thursday’s game. Duran likely will need more than the minimum 10 days before returning.
“Right now, it looks that way,” Cora said.
Duran initially did not receive X-rays or see a doctor after leaving Sunday’s game against the Yankees in New York with a left toe contusion. The hope remained that Duran would avoid being placed on the IL when Cora met with the media before Monday’s game in Houston. But the Red Sox decided later that night to place him on the IL.
Cora said before Tuesday’s game that Duran was feeling better. “It was probably going to take more than this series going into the next one,” Cora said Tuesday. “So take him out, get him ready and hopefully he’s back with us as soon as possible.”
But now it doesn’t appear this will be a short-term issue for the 26-year-old who is in the midst of a breakout season. He’s batting .295 with a .346 on-base percentage, .482 slugging percentage, .828 OPS, eight homers, 34 doubles, two triples and 24 stolen bases in 102 games. Boston promoted prospect Wilyer Abreu to take Duran’s spot on the active roster.

Duvall shakes off painful foul, crushes HR on next pitch 3:18 AM ADT Nathan Han
HOUSTON -- After Adam Duvall fouled a down-and-in sinker off the back of his right foot, he had a feeling that reliever Kendall Graveman might go back to the very same spot.
And Duvall was right, smashing a go-ahead three-run home run just seconds after doubling over in pain to give the Red Sox a 7-5 win over the Astros in 10 innings on Wednesday night.
“I could barely put any weight on [my foot],” Duvall said. “But I figured he was going to go back in there with it, after me fouling it off.
“That’s kind of the chess match a little bit. I know how pitchers think -- get a guy to foul it off his foot, they know you’re tender in there. They know you don’t want to swing over another one and do the same thing.” Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
Not only was the homer the eventual game-winning shot and his third blast in three days, Duvall’s big hit also gave the Red Sox a huge boost in the American League Wild Card race. All three teams Boston is currently fighting for the last two AL playoff spots -- Houston, Seattle and Toronto -- lost, and the Red Sox (67-60) climbed back to four games back of the Mariners (71-56) for the final Wild Card slot.
“[This win] was better than the one on Sunday, to be honest with you,” manager Alex Cora said. “Especially with knowing everything that happened today. I’m not going to lie, we’re watching, so we gained ground.”
Facing a potential third straight loss to the Astros and dwindling postseason odds, it was as close to a must-win game for the Red Sox as they’ve played all season. Boston fell behind early, 3-0, desperately trying to claw its way back.
Starter Chris Sale made his third start since a stress reaction in his left shoulder sidelined him on June 1. He said he felt a “sense of emergency” and recovered from four runs in his first three innings for back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth to end his outing. His 19 swings-and-misses matched a season high set on April 18.
Then it was the bullpen’s turn to battle. Garrett Whitlock recorded two impressive defensive plays -- including an incredible sliding catch on a foul pop-up. Chris Martin shook off a defensive miscue -- one of many that have hurt the Red Sox this series -- and Nick Pivetta kept the game tied despite being thrust into action after closer Kenley Jansen exited with right hamstring tightness after throwing just three pitches.
Duvall finished off the comeback. After a fractured left wrist sidelined him for a few months earlier this season, the outfielder is regaining the power that led him to 30-homer seasons in 2016 and ’17 and a 38-homer campaign in ‘21.
“Just pulling the ball, staying on pitches, taking his walks,” Cora said. “We’ve been talking about the walks for a while, and when you do that, you’re giving yourself a chance to drive pitches, and right now, he’s on time and hitting the ball.”
Duvall is pulling the ball more often (55.8% in 2023 compared to 48% for his career). Combine that with an increased fly ball rate (55.1% in 2023 compared to 50.2% for his career), and the 34-year-old has matched the highest wRC+ (120) of his career by unlocking more power.
“My swing is allowing me to [pull the ball more],” Duvall said. “That’s my strength.
“I think I’m moving better, just being able to get the foot planted and be stacked and in a good position to fire. Sometimes when you lean a little too far back or get a little too far forward, then it’s hard to swing efficiently.”
Even when Duvall could barely put any weight on one of his feet, he relied on his veteran savvy to predict Graveman’s pitch and send it to the left-field seats just two days after Red Sox broadcaster Kevin Millar’s own prediction of a Duvall home run.
“[Duvall] just opened up with two strikes and sold out,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “He was looking for it. This guy has been around a long time. He's a smart hitter. Sometimes the nod goes to the hitter.”

Injuries & Moves: Jansen exits with hamstring tightness 1:45 AM ADT LATEST NEWS
Aug. 23: RHP Kenley Jansen exits Wednesday’s game early with right hamstring tightness Jansen exited after throwing just three pitches in Wednesday’s win vs. the Astros. The 35-year-old got Jon Singleton to fly out to left-center field but winced after the second pitch, favoring his right leg. After a brief mound visit, Jansen limped off the mound with an athletic trainer and into the clubhouse. Nick Pivetta replaced the closer in the bottom of the ninth inning with Boston tied 4-4 with Houston.
“[He’s] just tight,” manager Alex Cora said. “We’ll see where we’re at tomorrow, see how he feels, but hopefully he’s ready for Friday.”
Jansen had converted each of his last 20 save opportunities dating back to May 20. The right-hander has a 2.81 ERA in 46 relief appearances, including 29 saves. He also became the seventh player in MLB history to record 400 career saves on May 11.
OF Jarren Duran (left toe contusion) Expected return: September Duran exited in the sixth inning of Boston's win over New York on Aug. 20 after suffering a left toe contusion while climbing the left-field wall in an attempt to catch the home run hit by Gleyber Torres. He was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 21) and underwent an MRI on Aug. 22.
"We're getting more information," manager Alex Cora said. "When he gets home, he's going to go see the doctor. For now, we're going to put him in a walking boot. ... We should know more about it over the weekend."
Cora called the foot injury "a tricky one" and said Duran would likely need more than 10 days before returning. (Last updated: Aug. 23)

Red Sox win: Adam Duvall crushes 3-run homer in 10th inning to beat Astros

HOUSTON — Adam Duvall fouled a ball off his lower body during the 10th inning, causing manager Alex Cora and the trainer to visit him.
After a brief injury delay, Duvall hit the next pitch, a low-and-inside 97.7 mph sinker from Kendall Graveman, into the left field stands for a go-ahead three-run homer.
The Red Sox secured a much-needed 7-5 victory over the Astros at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday. They will look to split the four-game series with Houston on Thursday.
Josh Winckowski didn’t make it easy in the bottom of the 10th. He allowed three hits but the Red Sox held on.
Red Sox starter Chris Sale pitched 5 innings and allowed four runs, six hits and one walk while striking out nine. He gave up a 385-foot two-run homer to Martín Maldonado in the second inning that made it 3-0 Houston.
Sale threw 80 pitches, 53 for strikes. He threw 44 sliders and induced 10 swings and misses with it. He recorded seven swings and misses with his 24 four-seam fastballs, which averaged 93.9 mph, per Baseball Savant. He topped out at 96.2 mph. He also got two swings and misses with his changeup.
Garrett Whitlock makes sliding catch
Garrett Whitlock got his uniform dirty in the seventh inning. He hustled into foul territory and made a sliding catch on Alex Bregman’s pop-up near the on-deck circle with runners at first and second and one out.
It was a big second out, although Whitlock wasn’t credited with it. Batter interference was called on Bregman who got in catcher Connor Wong’s way.
Whitlock struck out Kyle Tucker on a 2-2 slider to end the inning.
Whitlock tossed 2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one.
Kenley Jansen leaves with injury
Closer Kenley Jansen was removed with an injury after recording the first out of the ninth inning.
Jansen looked uncomfortable walking off the field after meeting briefly with manager Alex Cora and the trainer on the mound.
The team has not yet announced his exact injury.
Jansen threw just three pitches. He got Jon Singleton to fly out to left field on a 2-0 cutter.
Nick Pivetta replaced Jansen who has a 2.81 ERA and 29 saves in 46 outings (41 ⅔ innings) this season for Boston.
Pivetta kept the game tied 4-4. He walked Jose Altuve but then struck out both Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker swinging. The game is currently in the 10th inning.
Trevor Story makes backhanded play on run
The Red Sox didn’t make an errors Wednesday after committing five combined in the first two games. But second baseman Pablo Reyes failed to cleanly field Yainer Díaz’s 87.9 mph grounder to second base with a runner at first base and no outs in the eighth inning.
Reyes recovered to record the out at first base. But it might have been a double play. At least, Reyes could have recorded the out at second to prevent a runner from reaching scoring position.
Instead, Chas McCormick reached second and then advanced to third on a flyout to right field.
But with runners at the corners and two outs, Trevor Story kept the game tied 4-4. He made a tremendous backhanded play and threw to first on the run for the final out of the eighth.
Story helps Red Sox tie it
The Red Sox battled back after being down 3-0. Alex Verdugo’s RBI double and Triston Casas’ RBI single during the third inning cut it to 3-2.
The Astros went ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning on José Abreu’s RBI double. Boston then tied it 4-4 in the fifth inning on Trevor Story’s RBI single and Wilyer Abreu’s RBI groundout.
Story’s RBI was his first this season. He also ripped his fifth double in the second inning. Abreu’s RBI was the first of his career.

The Sox don’t get a pass for Story missing time. They knew his elbow was bad when they signed him and their only response to him having surgery was acquiring Adalberto Mondesi, who may or may not actually exist.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK How big of a problem do the Red Sox have with Rafael Devers’s defense? By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 24, 2023, 1:06 a.m.
HOUSTON — Rafael Devers is taking this hard.
The errors have piled up. He has 16 on the year, including Tuesday night’s errant throw in the first inning. The 16 errors are the most by a third baseman in the majors, and tied for most among all position players. He entered Wednesday night’s game against the Astros minus-6 in defensive runs saved, and there’s no way the Red Sox can hide him. Not after making that huge commitment to him in the offseason.
But during this tough defensive season, a part of Devers’s game where he’s struggled throughout his career, manager Alex Cora reassured the 26-year-old.
Cora on Wednesday revealed what he told Devers: “As long as I’m here, I want you to be my third baseman. I don’t want that talk of moving to another position.”
There should be concern over Devers’s defense. He’s regressed since entering the league in 2017 as a below-average defender carrying a lethal bat.
Considering that the Sox are underwhelming defensively even without Devers, and are tied to not only him, but two other below-average defensive players in Masataka Yoshida and Triston Casas, it will make it difficult for this team to get better defensively.
Yet Cora is confident that there will be improvement from Devers on that side of the ball, and it helps that Devers cares. But sometimes, Cora said, Devers may care too much.
“Knowing Raffy, I guarantee you if he goes 0 for 4 with an error, he’d rather go 0 for 4 and play clean baseball,” said Cora. “There are a lot of guys that will take their 3 for 4 and make an error and say, ‘So be it.’ ”
Devers, however, can’t seem to turn the page, which leads to more errors.
So, how do the Red Sox get Devers past this?
“Just keep talking with him,” Cora said. Jansen exits with injury
Closer Kenley Jansen exited Wednesday night’s game against the Astros in the bottom of the ninth inning because of what the Red Sox called right hamstring tightness.
With the game tied, 4-4, and Jon Singleton at the plate, Jansen delivered back-to-back balls. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Singleton sent a drive that Wilyer Abreu caught near the warning track in left-center.
Jansen, clearly in pain, hobbled around the mound before he exited alongside a trainer. He was replaced by Nick Pivetta.
Cora said afterward that Jansen is still experiencing tightness. They hope he will be ready for Friday’s series opener against the Dodgers at Fenway. Shouting match
Cora had some of his many words with home plate umpire Pat Hoberg on Tuesday night during the top of the second inning. The subject? Justin Verlander. The Astros starter had Adam Duvall in an 0-and-1 count before he put his PitchCom device to his ear because he claimed he couldn’t hear it.
But Cora wasn’t necessarily buying it, believing that Verlander was using it as a tactic to buy more time with the pitch clock.
“The clock ran out, and we’ve seen this before,” said Cora. “I think we’ve been in that place [acting like] the PitchCom doesn’t work. But when you’re shaking off, shaking off, shaking off. Like, why are you shaking off? Is it the PitchCom? Can you not hear it?”
Cora’s point was that if you’re shaking off the catcher, you can hear the PitchCom, which led him to think that it was a bluff by Verlander. Verlander, walking back to the mound, yelled at Cora, “I didn’t shake that at-bat!” The two exchanged words before Verlander told Cora, “[Expletive] off.”
“I told him he shook off a few times. He said he did not. Then I said, ‘Just go pitch.’ And then he blew me off,” explained Cora.
During his postgame news conference, Verlander maintained that the PitchCom wasn’t working.
“I was just standing there and I just didn’t get anything,” he said.
In the end, it was two competitors trying to win. Verlander and Cora, in fact, have a good relationship.
“This is a kid that I have the utmost respect for,” Cora said. “We talk and all that. It’s just the heat of the battle. He’s one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game. Especially the last 12, 13 years. He did a good job.”
As it pertains to Verlander telling Cora off? Neither saw it as an issue.
“I don’t think he would take offense,” Verlander said. “Hell, he might have been out there trying to rile their guys up, get me flustered, who knows? That was something that, when I was younger, would probably have affected me a lot more than it did now. The old MO against me was to get me to think about anything other than pitching, get me out of my game plan. In part, that was me being like, ‘I’m done with this. You do what you want. You talk to the umpire. I’m going to worry about pitching.’ It wasn’t really directed [at him], even though it was. I’m sure he understands.”
Duran in walking boot
Jarren Duran (left big toe sprain) will meet with doctors when the Red Sox return to Boston. Until then, the Sox have Duran in a walking boot. Duran injured the toe while climbing the wall during the recent series against the Yankees. Duran underwent an MRI here, but the Sox want to gather more information. Taking that into account, Duran will need more than 10 days on the injured list.

Red Sox @ Astros 24th August 2023 2pm @ Minute Maid Park
Bello 9-7/ 3.70
France 9-4/ 2.75
Thanks to Adam Duvall's heroics, Red Sox seek split in Houston FLM
After fouling a pitch directly off his left foot in the top of the 10th inning on Wednesday, Boston Red Sox center fielder Adam Duvall needed more than a couple of minutes to recover from the searing pain.
His decision to stay in the fight paid immediate dividends for Boston. Duvall clubbed a tiebreaking, three-run home run on the next pitch of his at-bat to carry the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the host Houston Astros, a win that keeps Boston squarely in the American League wild-card picture.
Duvall has homered in each of the first three games of this four-game series, which concludes Thursday afternoon. His 14th long ball of the season was the biggest by far.
"He's made some adjustments," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Duvall. "He's catching up with the fastball and he's pulling the ball. He mentioned a few weeks ago that he was missing that, and so far here he's put three great swings. That was huge for us."
Brayan Bello (9-7, 3.70 ERA) will start for the Red Sox on Thursday as Boston attempts to gain a series split.
The right-hander allowed one run on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six innings on Friday against the New York Yankees in an 8-3 victory. That lowered his ERA to 5.03 in seven starts since the All-Star break, a contrast to his last 12 starts before the break, when he compiled a 2.35 ERA. Bello leads the Red Sox in starts (21) and innings (119 1/3) this season.
Bello has faced the Astros once previously, recording two strikeouts while allowing two hits in two-thirds of an innings of relief in a no-decision on Aug. 3, 2022.
Rookie right-hander J.P. France (9-4, 2.75 ERA) has the starting assignment for the Astros on Thursday.
He recorded his 12th quality start on Friday against the Seattle Mariners, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six innings in a 2-0 loss. France is among rookie leaders in quality starts, wins, opponents' OPS (.675), innings (108) and WHIP (1.21). His ERA is the lowest in franchise history through the first 18 career appearances (minimum six starts).
France will face the Red Sox for the first time in his career.
The Astros are in desperate need of length from France, who has logged seven innings in four of his previous six starts. The last Astros starter to record at least 21 outs was Framber Valdez on Aug. 14 against the Miami Marlins, a game in which the Astros used only one relief pitcher.
In the eight games since, the Astros have used at least four relievers six times.
France and Justin Verlander, who tossed six scoreless innings on Tuesday, are the only starters to log at least six innings during that stretch, with Houston having to overwork its bullpen to cover for shortened outings from Cristian Javier (4 2/3 innings on Aug. 15 at Miami), Hunter Brown (2 2/3 innings on Sunday against Seattle) and Jose Urquidy, who recorded only 14 outs Wednesday.
"We need it," Astros manager Dusty Baker said of an extended outing from France to spare the bullpen. "We were upside down (Wednesday). We got upside down early in the 13-game streak (of games played on consecutive days) and we had a couple short outings, which put pressure on the bullpen. We're at the drawing board now trying to figure out what we're going to do."
