Injuries & Moves: Paxton shut down for season; Whitlock returns September 10th, 2023 LATEST NEWS
Sept. 10: LHP James Paxton placed on 15-day injured list retroactive to Sept. 7 with right knee inflammation Paxton, who struggled for weeks after an outstanding run prior to the All-Star break, won't pitch again this season due to inflammation in his right knee. With where the Red Sox are in the standings, the club didn't want to push the veteran lefty. A free agent this offseason, Paxton went 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 19 starts and 96 innings. Nick Pivetta, who has been in a roving role for the past several months, will be a starter for the rest of the season.
"It’s been barking for a little bit," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Paxton's knee. "Tried to push him back [in the rotation] to see if he could bounce back, but I don’t think it makes sense to push him. First things first: the player. He’s been through so much throughout his career that at this point where we are at, it doesn't make sense."
Sept. 10: RHP Garrett Whitlock reinstated from the bereavement list Whitlock returned to the roster on Sunday after missing the past week to mourn a death in his family. The righty has made 16 appearances this season, 10 of them starts, and gone 5-4 with a 5.49 ERA.
"He’s OK," Cora said. "First things first, [we're] happy to have him here. We’ll embrace him and help him out as much as possible, you know, but just from having him around, it means a lot. And we'll see how is, but he’s ready to go."
Sept. 10: RHP Nick Robertson recalled from Triple-A Worcester; LHP Joe Jacques optioned to Worcester The Red Sox have had to make frequent roster moves lately due to bullpen overuse. The latest example of this came Sunday, when Robertson got called up and Jacques was sent down. Robertson, 25, has allowed 14 runs in 14 1/3 innings over 11 appearances this year, his Major League debut. Acquired from the Dodgers on July 25, the right-hander has also posted a 3.16 ERA (15 ER/42 2/3 IP) and .205 opponent batting average (33-for-161) with 58 strikeouts in 42 Triple-A games for Oklahoma City and Worcester.
The 28-year-old Jacques pitched the ninth inning Saturday against Baltimore and allowed one run. The left-hander has made 23 appearances (one start) with the Red Sox this season, his Major League debut, recording a 5.06 ERA (15 ER/26 2/3 IP). Selected by Boston from Pittsburgh in the Triple-A phase of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft, the New Jersey native also posted a 2.83 ERA (11 ER/35 IP) in 30 games (one start) for Worcester during 2023.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox shut down lefthander James Paxton for rest of season because of knee problem By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated September 10, 2023, 4:46 p.m.
James Paxton’s season is over.
The 34-year-old lefthander landed on the injured list with what the Red Sox described as right knee inflammation. The Red Sox skipped his scheduled start last week, and had planned to have him start on Tuesday against the Yankees. But with ongoing discomfort in his right knee, an issue that popped up in a four-inning start against the White Sox on June 24, and for which Paxton at times wore a brace, there was a change of plans.
“I don’t think it makes sense to push him,” said manager Alex Cora. “He’s been through so much throughout his career that at this point, where we are at, it doesn’t make sense.”
With three weeks left in the season, Paxton won’t pitch again this year. In 19 starts — more than tripling the number of outings he made while battling injuries from 2020-22 — he went 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 96 innings while posting a 25 percent strikeout rate.
Paxton, who exercised a one-year, $4 million player option for this year after not pitching in 2022 on a one-year, $6 million deal, was at times dominant for three months from mid-May to mid-August (3.34 ERA through 16 starts). But fatigue and injuries led to struggles in his last three starts, when he allowed 17 runs in 9⅔ innings.
“The medical staff did an outstanding job the last two years to get him to the point that he was one of the best pitchers in the big leagues. Just towards the end, the mechanics were off and the breaking ball he lost, and he became a one dimensional pitcher,” said Cora. “But I’m very proud of him. It was amazing. And we’ll see what happens in the future.”
Paxton will be a free agent after this season, and said during the season he plans to keep pitching as long as he’s physically able to do so. The Sox were open to moving the lefthander at the trade deadline but were underwhelmed by offers and instead elected to keep him in hopes that he could be part of a rotation that allowed the team to sustain contention.
Could the team bring him back in 2024?
“That’s a question for higher-ups,” said Cora. Rafaela gets a start
For the first time since Sept. 5, Ceddanne Rafaela was in Sunday’s lineup. The 22-year-old was in the leadoff spot and in center field. He went 0 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts in the Red Sox’ 7-3 win over the Orioles at Fenway.
Though Rafaela had just 17 plate appearances in his first 13 days in the big leagues, he’s tried to use his dugout vantage point as a learning opportunity.
“Little things matter — small things that you can’t imagine,” said Rafaela. “There are a lot of little things that some people don’t care about, but it matters. I think that’s what I’ve learned a lot, just watching the game. Every pitch, every inning, every out, everything matters. You have to play the whole game. You have to play nine innings hard.”
Cora praised Rafaela’s baseball IQ, citing his recognition in a ninth-inning at-bat Saturday of a chance to bunt for a base hit. The Sox staff has enjoyed the chance to get to know Rafaela and further his baseball education.
“He’s a good one. He understands what he needs to do. He’s always paying attention, talking to the players, talking to us,” said Cora. “Having him around, it means a lot. It’s going to benefit us in the future.”
Rafaela is 8 for 21, and the Sox have been pleased with what they see as progress in his swing decisions. Rafaela, however, said he’s not trying to use the next three weeks as an audition for 2024.
“I’m just trying to do my best. I’m not putting pressure on myself to do something this year to make me look good for next year,” said Rafaela. “I’m just being in the moment right now, trying to do my best to help the team win right now, and be ready next year for next year.”
With the Sox six games out of the wild-card picture with 19 games remaining, Cora acknowledged the Sox will give more opportunities to rookies Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Enmanuel Valdez. He said Abreu will play winter ball in Venezuela, Valdez will do so in the Dominican, and Rafaela might play in Puerto Rico. Sticking with Sale
With Paxton sidelined, Nick Pivetta will return to the rotation for the remainder of the season. Kutter Crawford, Pivetta, and Tanner Houck will start the first three games of the four-game series against the Yankees this week.
Thursday’s starter has yet to be determined. Chris Sale will pitch if he bounces back well physically from Saturday’s poor outing (four innings, seven runs). If not, Sale will be pushed to Saturday and the Sox will have a bullpen game Thursday.
For now, the Sox aren’t discussing shutting down Sale even as he deals with the frustration of fluctuating stuff and command since returning from the injured list.
“The most important thing here is to take care of the player, especially where we are at right now,” said Cora. “We’re not going to push him here to get him hurt. The goal here is for him to finish the season healthy and be ready for next year. He’ll keep working and he’ll go all the way to the finish line. We know that.” Moving pieces
Garrett Whitlock returned to the Red Sox from the bereavement list, and the team recalled righthander Nick Robertson from Triple A Worcester. In addition to Paxton’s placement on the injured list, the team optioned lefthander Joe Jacques (2-1, 5.06) to Worcester. … Corey Kluber, who pitched a scoreless inning for Triple A Worcester on Saturday, is likely to make at least one more rehab start.

Max Goodman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
BOSTON — After two days in a row with a rain delay at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees may need to sit through more weather before their series opener against the Red Sox on Monday night.
The forecast in Boston is nothing compared to what came down in the Bronx on Saturday, a 2:34-minute delay with some of the most inclement conditions we’ve seen all season.
Still, showers are expected throughout the evening at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and Weather.com reports that thunderstorms could roll through the area leading up to that time. As of 4 p.m., rain hasn’t started coming down yet, but there’s an ominous cloudy atmosphere overhead.
Those conditions are likely to stick around, on and off, through the night and into Tuesday morning.
Here is Weather.com’s hour-by-hour forecast for Sunday, including the percent chance of precipitation:
4 p.m.: Rain, 59 percent
5 p.m.: Rain, 70 percent
6 p.m.: Thunderstorms, 66 percent
7 p.m.: Thunderstorms, 68 percent
8 p.m.: Scattered Thunderstorms, 47 percent
9 p.m.: Cloudy, 24 percent
10 p.m.: Scattered Thunderstorms, 44 percent
11 p.m.: Thunderstorms, 74 percent

Red Sox lineup: Adam Duvall sits for third straight game
Published: Sep. 11, 2023, 4:41 p.m.
By
Sean McAdam | sean.mcadam@masslive.com
BOSTON — For the third straight game, outfielder Adam Duvall is absent from the Red Sox lineup as the team gets ready for a four-game series with the New York Yankees.
Duvall played the homestand opener against Baltimore Friday, then missed the remaining two games against the Orioles before being kept out of the lineup Monday night, too.
Neither Alex Cora nor Duvall identified any specific physical issue, other than to say the outfielder was dealing with some general body soreness. Duvall has played in 78 of the first 143 games, having missed a little more than two months with a broken wrist.
With Duvall out, the Red Sox have Wilyer Abreu in center. Abreu had a 5-for-5 game Saturday and is hitting .342 since his promotion from Worcester.
