3rd time through the order for the Yankees and as usual Pivetta, is imploding another one, who should not be a SP walks, and hits and the Yankees now lead 3-2 in the 6th
out comes Cora to get home
not many fans in the stands but happy to hear some boos. One tough inning for Pivetta, and the bullpen for that matter. The Sox actually outhit the Yankees, but 'clusterluck' did us in. Pivetta looked dominant through 5 innings. The 3rd time through the order thing is very real, which is why managers will often pull a starting pitcher who is cruising. As fans, we must remember this when we start complaining about a starting pitcher being pulled when he is cruising. Hopefully, we take Game 2.

Our rotation is in shambles and has been for a good part of the year due to injuries. Beyond that, the point that was made on today's telecast about having too many 'hybrid' pitchers is a valid one, I think. Decide whether you want guys to be in the rotation or in the bullpen and stick with it.

Injuries & Moves: Kluber strong in rehab outing September 12th, 2023 LATEST NEWS
Sept. 12: RHP Corey Kluber gets eight outs in Worcester In his second Minor League rehab outing for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Kluber was sharp in a 2 2/3-inning stint, allowing two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out two. Of Kluber’s 35 pitches, 23 were for strikes. Kluber will likely be activated by the Red Sox in the near future. He hasn’t pitched for Boston since June 20 due to right shoulder inflammation.
Sept. 12: INF Pablo Reyes activated from 10-day injured list; INF Enmanuel Valdez optioned to Triple-A Worcester Reyes returned for Game 2 of Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader after being out since Aug. 28 with inflammation in his left elbow. The 30-year-old has done a solid job for the Red Sox this season, hitting .303 with 25 runs and 18 RBIs in 51 games.
I think that that’s a question for later. The fact that he can be versatile, I think the second base part of it is real. We believe he can do it too, it’s just a matter if we play him there in September but versatilty is a big part of this game. It helps your roster. He’s a good defender at short and center field and other positions. Talking to Chad Tracy yesterday, he was here for the day, he takes grounders at third and he looks like a natural so he’s a good athlete that can do it all and we’ll see what the future holds
He belted a walk-off grand slam against the Royals on Aug. 7.
Valdez, 24, has hit .246 with five doubles, five home runs, and 15 RBIs in 41 games for the Red Sox this season in his first taste of the Major Leagues. The left-handed hitter has also batted .249 with eight doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, and 38 RBIs in 51 games for Worcester.

Rafael Devers’ 30th homer not enough as Red Sox lose Game 1 of doubleheader

BOSTON — Rafael Devers reached the 30-homer mark for the Red Sox on Tuesday, but it was not enough in a sleepy game that Boston let slip away.
Boston forfeited a 2-0 lead as the Yankees scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and took a 3-2 victory in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader between two rivals who are simply playing out the string at the end of the season. A two-run Gleyber Torres single off Nick Pivetta was the difference as the Sox dropped just their second game to the Yankees all season and fell to 73-71.
The Red Sox had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the ninth when Yankees reliever Clay Holmes walked three straight batters with one out. But Alex Verdugo swung at the first pitch and grounded into a double play to end the game in front of a sparse Fenway Park crowd.
Before the sixth inning, Pivetta — now a full-time rotation member with James Paxton on the injured list with knee inflammation — cruised. He struck out seven through the first three innings and allowed just one baserunner (Kyle Higashioka singled in the third) through five innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Sox’ offense gave Pivetta a little bit of breathing room. Devers led off by depositing a Randy Vásquez first-pitch cutter into the Yankees’ bullpen; two batters later, Triston Casas doubled, then came around to score on a wild pitch.
Things unraveled quickly for Pivetta in the sixth. He hit Everson Pereira with a pitch, then allowed another single to Higashioka before D.J. LeMahieu got New York on the board with an RBI double. Two batters later, Torres put the Yanks ahead with a two-run single down the first base line. After Pivetta walked Giancarlo Stanton, manager Alex Cora came out to signal the end of the righty’s day. Pivetta took the loss having allowed three runs on four hits in 5 ⅓ innings. He struck out 10 Yankees.
After reliever Mauricio Llovera escaped the top of the sixth, the Red Sox had a chance to strike back in the bottom of the inning. That opportunity fell flat when, hitting with runners on the corners and two outs, Ceddanne Rafaela struck out in a nine-pitch battle against righty Jhony Brito.
In the ninth, Holmes got Wilyer Abreu to ground out before walking Rafaela, Enmanuel Valdez and Reese McGuire before the lineup flipped over. Cora said postgame that he didn’t mind Verdugo’s aggressiveness on the swing.
Devers joins elite company
According to the Red Sox, Devers is just the third player in franchise history to record three 30+ homer seasons before age 27, joining Ted Williams and Jim Rice. The list of players with 30+ home run seasons for the Red Sox is an elite one with Devers joining David Ortiz, Williams, Manny Ramirez, Jimmie Foxx, Rice, Mo Vaughn, Dwight Evans and Carl Yastrzemski.
Devers hit 32 homers in 2019 and a career-high 38 jacks in 2021. He has 169 home runs through 825 career games.
Crawford gets nightcap
Right-hander Kutter Crawford (6-7, 4.36 ERA) will get the nightcap for the Red Sox opposite lefty Carlos Rodón (2-5, 6.60 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. The teams are in jeopardy of another rainout Wednesday that could mean another doubleheader Thursday.
Crawford, who threw a career-high 96 pitches in his last outing Tuesday, is 2-1 with a 1.89 career ERA in five career games (three starts) against the Yankees. He allowed just one hit (a solo homer) in six innings his last time against New York on Aug. 17 in the Bronx.

Why Red Sox’s Alex Cora is OK with Alex Verdugo swinging at first pitch

BOSTON — The Red Sox loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to Yankees closer Clay Holmes’ inability to find the strike zone. But Alex Verdugo grounded into a 5-6-3 double play to end it.
The Yankees won the first game of the doubleheader, 3-2. Game 2 is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. If the Red Sox lose, they will drop into a tie for last place in the AL East with New York.
Holmes retired Wilyer Abreu on a groundout to first base on a 3-1 pitch to begin the ninth. But the righty then walked the next three batters. Ceddanne Rafaela walked on a 3-2 pitch, Enmanuel Valdez walked on a 3-1 pitch and Reese McGuire walked on a 3-1 pitch.
Ten of Holmes’ previous 12 pitches were balls but Verdugo swung at the first pitch of his at-bat and grounded into a game-ending double play. Only seven of his 22 pitches were strikes.
But manager Alex Cora was OK with Verdugo swinging at the first pitch for two reasons.
“I don’t know the numbers with Dugie against that guy but I think he’s been really good,” Cora said. “So it’s hard for me to second-guess his at-bats against him because he’s been really good against him and that pitch was middle-middle.”
The pitch, a 97.1 mph sinker, was thrown right down the middle of the plate.
Verdugo entered the at-bat 3-for-5 with three singles, two RBIs, three walks and one strikeout against Holmes.
Cora also was pleased with the patience young hitters Rafaela and Valdez showed.
“They did a good job and then Ceddanne did a good job putting pressure on him (Holmes) at second, which is great,” Cora said. ”Got a bunch of athletes that are doing a lot of good things. I think the at-bats were great. It just happened that we were short.”
Boston enters Game 2 with a 73-71 record. New York is 72-72.

BOSTON — The Red Sox and Yankees are now tied for last place in the AL East.
Ceddanne Rafaela homered and Wilyer Abreu threw a runner out at the plate but it wasn’t enough as Boston lost 4-1 in Game 2 of its doubleheader Tuesday against New York.
The Yankees swept, winning 3-2 in Game 1. Both teams have a 73-72 record.
The Red Sox went 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base in the second game after going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight runners on base in Game 1.
Rafaela led off the bottom of the first inning with his first MLB homer. He connected on the first pitch he saw, an inside 94.2 mph four-seam fastball from Yankees left-handed starter Carlos Rodón, and sent it 400 feet to left field. It hit off one of the light towers above the Green Monster. Rafaela’s blast left his bat with a 103.8 mph exit velocity.
Kutter Crawford pitched 4 ⅔ innings and allowed one run, three hits and three walks while striking out seven. The run he gave up came in the fifth inning when Estevan Florial hit an RBI single to center field.
The Yankees went ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning when Jake Bauers grounded into a force-out with the bases loaded and no outs against Josh Winckowski. Third baseman Luis Urías charged his slow grounder and tagged the third base bag for the first out. Winckowski then escaped by getting Oswald Peraza to line into a 5-4 double play.
Boston had an opportunity to tie it in the seventh when Rafaela led off with a double and moved to third base on Wilyer Abreu’s groundout. But Justin Turner popped out to first base and Adam Duvall struck out swinging to strand Rafaela at third base.
Duvall went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. He’s 0-for-17 with 14 strikeouts in his past four games.
The Yankees scored two more runs in the ninth to go ahead 4-1. Kenley Jansen, who failed to record an out in the ninth, left with fatigue and illness symptoms.
The Red Sox and Yankees will play the third game of this four-game series Wednesday. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. Righty Tanner Houck (4-9, 5.28 ERA) will start for Boston opposite righty Clarke Schmidt (9-8, 4.54 ERA).
