Reid Detmers, bullpen limit Boston to 3 hits, Angels beat Red Sox 7-0 AP
BOSTON (AP) Reid Detmers allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and Taylor Ward matched a season high with three RBIs to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Boston Red Sox 7-0 on Friday night.
“He kept them off balance all night,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. "Another great outing. ... It seems like every time we’ve needed it, he’s stepped up. I couldn’t ask for more from him.”
The Angels sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs (one earned) against Boston right-hander Tanner Houck (2-1), who had not allowed a run in his two previous starts this season, spanning 12 innings. Houck matched a career high with seven runs allowed (four earned) on a career-high 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
“Stuff-wise, I felt a little flat with everything,” Houck said. “Felt like it didn’t quite have the same bite as the last two outings."
The left-hander Detmers (3-0) had a similar outing to his last - an April 6 win against Boston - when he allowed one run on three hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts in six innings. He had two walks on Friday.
“I didn’t have my best stuff early,” Detmers said. “I was kind of just fighting myself a little bit. Worked in between innings, figured it out slowly and by the end of the game I felt like I had all my stuff back.”
Ward’s two-run homer with two outs in the sixth, scoring Mike Trout who singled, ended Houck’s night with left-hander Brennan Bernardino entering.
Boston made three errors, matching a season high on April 5 against the Angels. The Red Sox are 0-4 at Fenway Park this season.
“Things didn’t work out for them on the defensive side, to our advantage,” Washington said.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said those mental mistakes really bothered him.
“Like, the physical ones, they’re part of it,” he said. “We will make mistakes, we will make errors. I made errors. I know how it works. It’s part of it. But, the other ones are the ones we have to eliminate, the mental ones.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Angels: RHP Robert Stephenson, out with right shoulder inflammation, will start a rehab assignment this weekend.
Red Sox: Shortstop Trevor Story had season-ending labrum surgery on Friday, the team announced. ... RHP Isaiah Campbell was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right shoulder impingement. INF/OF Bobby Dalbec was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take his place on the roster. … 3B Rafael Devers was out of the starting lineup, the second straight game and fourth this season he has missed with shoulder soreness.
UP NEXT
The Angels and Red Sox continue their three-game series on Saturday. RHP Griffin Canning (0-1, 8.38 ERA) is scheduled to make his third start of the season. In his last outing, April 5 against the Red Sox, he took a no-decision, going 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, including three homers, with three walks and four strikeouts as the Angels lost. Boston has not yet announced a starting pitcher.

Red Sox's homestand off to sour start with errors, cold bats 2:04 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- Red Sox manager Alex Cora was so excited about his team playing baseball games at Fenway Park that he woke up at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, the day of the home opener.
His team was filled with good vibrations after going 7-3 on a season-opening, three-city trip to the West Coast.
“I know we make jokes about the vibe, but the vibe is real,” Cora said Tuesday morning. “I could tell yesterday, a lot of people came up to me, excited about the team, excited about the way we’re playing. It’s fun.”
Then the home games actually started, and very little has been fun for the Red Sox. On Friday, the club slipped to 0-4 on their opening homestand with the roughest performance so far, a 7-0 loss to the Angels.
The vibe that was good just a few short days ago had soured audibly in the early innings on Friday, as the boo-birds rained down after the latest collection of defensive miscues. There were three errors in the first three innings.
“We don't like losing, especially in front of our home fans,” Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill said. “It’s no fun. Obviously, we want to put up more of a fight than we are right now. Just keep competing every day. Obviously, a couple tough losses in a row [are] not making us feel too good. A little fire under our butts [is] coming up pretty soon.”
The troubles started early Friday. Mike Trout, the third hitter of the game, smacked a grounder to David Hamilton that seemed to have double play written all over it. But the rookie shortstop made a high throw to second that Pablo Reyes couldn’t catch. Instead of two outs, the Sox got none.
Then, Taylor Ward stepped up and hit a grounder to second that Reyes bobbled, and the Sox could only get one out at second rather than the double play it could have been.
For the Red Sox, double plays have become double trouble.
“We got two ground balls that you should turn into double plays,” Cora said. “We didn’t do it. They scored three and put us in a bad spot.”
Boston is currently last in fielding percentage (.969) and errors (16). Their 11 fielding errors were four more than any other team at the conclusion of Friday night’s game.
The Sox gifted the Angels another run in the third on a single up the middle by Brandon Drury. Nolan Schanuel was being held at third, but center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela’s throw got by the cutoff man, and Schanuel came in with a third unearned run against starter Tanner Houck.
“There’s no play at the plate, so we have to knock it down,” Cora said. “That ball can’t go by. Those are the ones that really bother me. The physical ones, they're part of it. We will make mistakes, They will make errors. I made errors. I know how it works. It's part of it, but the other ones are the ones that we have to eliminate, the mental ones.”
While the defense had been the glaring issue with the team while enduring a three-game sweep against the Orioles, the offense was also stifled on Friday.
Playing again without Rafael Devers (sore left shoulder), the offense mustered three hits off Reid Detmers over 6 1/3 innings and none against the Angels’ bullpen.
“Just couldn’t get anything going,” O’Neill said. “It's one of those days the bats went cold out there. We didn't play great defense collectively. It was not a great game overall.”
Though Houck certainly deserved a better fate (three of the seven runs he allowed were unearned), he also gave up 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
By and large, however, the starting rotation has been the overwhelming strength during the team’s 7-7 start.
Following Thursday’s extra-inning loss, Cora said, “We’ve got to turn the page with Trevor. He’s not gonna be here.”
Clearly, though, the Red Sox are still trying to regroup from the loss of their best all-around player, who had left shoulder surgery on Friday and won’t play again until 2025.
Hamilton has had two tough games in a row at shortstop (Story’s position), and it will be interesting to see if Cora gives more thought to moving Rafaela to short.
“Tomorrow’s a new day,” said Houck. “New sun, new sunrise.”
And, the Red Sox hope, a much-improved defense.

Injuries & Moves: Devers 'probably' out until Sunday 12:09 AM ADT

LATEST NEWS
April 12: 3B Rafael Devers (left shoulder) likely out until at least Sunday The star slugger has been dealing with a nagging left shoulder injury for a couple of weeks, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora will likely keep him out of the lineup for the third straight day Saturday. Earlier on Friday, Cora thought that Devers would "probably" start on Saturday. But the club is being conservative with their best hitter.
"I've been feeling it since Spring Training," Devers said Friday. "But every time I was swinging, I was feeling it a little bit more and more. So for me, I think like two or three days [off] could be enough. I hope it doesn't keep bothering me after these two or three days, but that's something I can't control. That's why I'm just trying to keep working to get stronger, to get my shoulder back in a good way.”
April 12: SS Trevor Story undergoes shoulder surgery While the Red Sox were playing on Friday, Story was in Los Angeles undergoing extensive surgery to repair the left shoulder he fractured on April 5. Story won't be back until next season.
According to a statement from the Red Sox, Story "underwent a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache."
April 12: 3B/1B Bobby Dalbec recalled from Triple-A Worcester; RHP Isaiah Campbell placed on 15-day injured list with right shoulder impingement Given the uncertain status of Devers for at least the next couple of days, the Red Sox decided to call up an infielder to replace the ailing Campbell rather than a pitcher. Campbell got hit hard on back-to-back nights on Wednesday and Thursday, giving up eight hits and nine runs (eight earned) over two innings.
April 12: 2B Vaughn Grissom (left groin, left hamstring) starts rehab assignment Grissom started his rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester on Friday night, going 0-for-3 as the DH in Syracuse, N.Y. Given the season-ending injury to shortstop Trevor Story, the Red Sox could really use Grissom's right-handed bat. However, he didn't play at all in Spring Training, so the club isn't likely to rush him during his rehab assignment, which can go a maximum of 20 days.
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) Expected return: Later this month After diagnosing Pivetta with a flexor strain in his right elbow, the Sox placed the righty on the injured list, retroactive to April 6. In an encouraging development, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Pivetta is expected to resume throwing on April 13. Pivetta went 1-1 with a 0.82 ERA in his first two starts this season before getting shut down. (Last updated: April 12)
RHP Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement) Expected return: TBD The reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 12 with a right shoulder impingement. After pitching well in his first five outings with the Red Sox, the big righty was rocked on back-to-back nights on April 10 and 11, giving up eight hits and nine runs (eight earned) in just two innings. (Last updated: April 12)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: Late April/early May Grissom started his rehab assignment on April 12 for Triple-A Worcester, and went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter. Given that he didn't play any Spring Training games, his rehab could be on the lengthier side. The maximum time for a position player on a Minor League rehab assignment is 20 days. (Last updated: April 12)
SS Trevor Story (dislocated left shoulder) Expected return: 2025 Story underwent surgery on April 12. According to a statement from the Red Sox, Story "underwent a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache."
Story won't play again until next season. Story dislocated his shoulder diving for a ball on April 5 in Anaheim. (Last updated: April 12)
OF Rob Refsnyder (left pinkie toe) Expected return: Late April/early May Refsnyder started his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on April 10 and struck out in all three of his at-bats as the DH. Things went much better on April 12, as he went 2-for-3 while making the start in right field. (Last updated: April 12)

Red Sox booed by fans in blowout loss, now lead MLB with 16 errors

BOSTON — The Red Sox made just two errors in their first six games. They have made 14 errors in their past eight games. That includes the three errors they made in a 7-0 loss to the Angels at Fenway Park on Friday.
Red Sox fans booed the home team multiple times throughout the evening, including after the final out. Boston dropped to 0-4 at home after starting the season 7-3 on the road.
The Red Sox are just one game over .500 (180-179) at Fenway since the start of the 2019 season (or since winning their last World Series).
Shortstop David Hamilton, first baseman Triston Casas and center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela all made errors Friday.
The first two batters reached, then Mike Trout hit a ground ball to shortstop. Hamilton fielded it but threw wild to second base. A potential double play turned into a no-out, bases loaded jam.
“We got two ground balls that we should have turned into double plays,” manager Alex Cora said. “We didn’t do it and they scored three. It put us in a bad spot.”
Starting pitcher Tanner Houck tossed 12 scoreless innings in his first two starts. But the 27-year-old gave up seven runs (four earned runs), 12 hits and no walks while striking out just two in 5 ⅔ innings here Friday.
Cora said Houck made pitches to get out of jams but then the defense let him down, making it “hard to pitch.”
“We get a ground ball double play, we don’t turn it, then stuff like that is going to happen,” Cora said. “Double plays are game-changers. Momentum changers. You turn them, the momentum shifts to you. If you don’t turn them, the momentum stays with them. And that’s what happened. I think he (Houck) did a good job of giving us 5 ⅔. ... He gave us enough innings for us to be in a better place for tomorrow and the upcoming days.”
Houck added, “Stuff-wise, I felt a little flat with everything. It felt like it didn’t have quite the same bite as the last two outings.”
He was removed after giving up a 422-foot two-run homer to Taylor Ward.
Angels left-handed starter Reid Detmers limited Boston to just three hits in 6 ⅓ scoreless innings. In two starts vs. the Red Sox this season, Detmers has allowed just one run and struck out 19 batters in 12 ⅓ innings.
Jarren Duran (double), Pablo Reyes (single) and Masataka Yoshida (single) recorded Boston’s hits.
“We just couldn’t get anything going, man,” Tyler O’Neill said. “It was just one of those days where the bats went cold out there. We didn’t play good defense collectively.”
The Red Sox and Angels will play again Saturday at 4:10 p.m. Righty Griffin Canning (0-1, 8.38 ERA) will start for the Angels. Boston has not officially announced its starter but it likely will be Cooper Criswell.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 Mistakes like that shouldn't happen in the big leagues.
The Red Sox can't consider this acceptable. Their fans -- if we're going by attendance and NESN ratings -- are rejecting this product in droves.
Didn't take long to make this relevant for the second (third? fourth?) straight night.

Red Sox fans -- in various ways -- are practically screaming at John Henry in protest.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Larger arsenal of pitches has helped solidify Garrett Whitlock’s credentials as a starting pitcherBy Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 12, 2024, 8:14 p.m. Garrett Whitlock said this has been his best run as a starter following Thursday night’s start against the Orioles when the righthander went five innings, allowing just a run. “Last year, it felt like it was a good one, bad one. Good one, bad one. Good one, bad one,” said Whitlock. ”So I mean, to be able to put three in a row together is definitely a good thing and you want to keep going and keep adding those together.” The difference for Whitlock, he noted, is that he now has more pitches. Last year, for instance, Whitlock stuck to mainly his sinker and changeup. His third go-to pitch was his sweeper. This year, however, Whitlock has implemented a cutter and a gyro slider in his pitch mix. ”Last year and 2022, it was one of those things where if I didn’t have my changeup that day, I was getting absolutely hammered because my breaking ball was just not competitive. I think now with adding the cutter, adding the gyro slider, adding the bigger sweeper and everything like that, like I think that that helps with things. It’s like if one thing is not working, I have other tools I can go to.” Whitlock has a 1.26 ERA in those three starts, adding that the confidence in his cutter grew in his start Thursday. “It was one of those where I actually shook to it, and I hadn’t done that all year,” said Whitlock. ”But it’s still just a growing process because I developed the gyro slider the last week of spring training and developed the cutter in spring training. It’s one of those things where I’m trying to get better with each and every time we get out there.” Abreu coming along? Wilyer Abreu has gotten off to a horrific start to the season that also included a spring training where he struck out 26 times in 77 plate appearances. He entered Friday’s game hitting .190 (4 for 21). “I’ve been surprised with swings and misses to be honest,” manager Alex Cora said before Thursday’s series finale. “More playing time probably helps. We’re gonna find ways to get him at-bats. It’s been challenging early on, but where we’re at right now, there are ways.” Related: Here’s why the Red Sox are so confident in Wilyer Abreu in right field But maybe Abreu, known for his strike-zone awareness and his hitting ability, is beginning to find himself. The Sox outfielder laced two hits to the opposite field Thursday, including an RBI double off the Green Monster. “He hasn’t hit the ball the other way in months,” Cora said Friday before the Sox’ 7-0 series-opening loss to the Angels at Fenway. “Not even spring training. Everything was pull-side. He’s had good practice session, practicing kind of like staying on it and not cutting his swing [off]. He did a good job staying the other way, not trying to do too much. He hit those two balls hard to left, and the [out] to first, too. So he got three good at-bats. ”And like I said before, we have to figure out way to play him against righties; we have to. There’s a reason he’s here and it’s because he’s a good player. Somehow some way, we will find him at-bats. Campbell goes to the IL
Saturday’s starter is still to be determined. The Red Sox placed Isaiah Campbell on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. Campbell produced two consecutive rough outings Wednesday and Thursday against the Orioles when he yielded a combined eight earned runs in just two innings. In Thursday’s game, Campbell conceded five runs and two home runs.
“I just didn’t do my job,” Campbell said after his appearance Thursday and the Sox loss that completed a sweep. “I can’t leave too many pitches over the plate against these guys. The pitches I left over, they got. They hit them hard and they did their job. So this loss is on me. I have to get better and be ready for my next outing.”
Campbell surrendered just a run across 4⅓ innings prior to those two woeful appearances.
The Sox recalled Bobby Dalbec from Triple A Worcester to fill Campbell’s spot on the roster. Injury updates
Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum Friday, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim in his shoulder, the team said in a release. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles … Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) will begin playing catch Saturday. Pivetta went on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor strain Sunday. He’s made two starts this season with a 0.82 ERA … Rafael Devers (shoulder) will likely miss his third straight game Saturday, his fifth overall. Devers is hitting .184 with two homers in 10 games this season … Rob Refsnyder (toe) went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored in his rehab start for Worcester Friday while also playing in right field. Vaughn Grissom (groin) began his Triple A rehab stint by going 0 for 3 from the designated hitter spot.

Los Angeles Angels vs Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 4:10pm EDT Written by Chris King
A pair of American League teams continue their series on the diamond in search of a victory in Beantown. The Los Angeles Angels are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Boston Red Sox in the middle game of a three-game set Saturday afternoon. Los Angeles dropped the rubber game of their three-game set with the Rays at home as they fell 4-2 Wednesday afternoon in their previous game. Boston was swept in a three-game series at home by Baltimore as they fell 9-4 in 10 innings in the series finale Thursday night. This article was published prior to the conclusion of the opening game of the series at Fenway Park Friday night.
Los Angeles Angels Looking to Pick Up Road Victory Los Angeles dropped their second straight and fourth in the last six games as they were doubled up by Tampa Bay on getaway day Wednesday afternoon. The Angels entered Friday 6-6 and stood second in the AL West, half a game behind the Rangers for the top spot in the division. On Wednesday, Los Angeles got two hits each from Mike Trout, Jo Adell (run, RBI) and Matt Thaiss (run) in a losing effort. Adell hit his first homer of the season in the loss for Los Angeles. Jose Soriano (0-2) took the loss on the mound as he threw four innings, allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. He uncorked a wild pitch in the opening inning that plated two runs, putting the Angels in a hole they never got out of again.
Griffin Canning is on the mound for his third start of the season for the Angels in this contest. He is 0-1 with an 8.38 ERA, a 1.655 WHIP, four walks and six strikeouts over 9.2 innings of work on the season. Canning didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came at home against Boston last Saturday. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a game the Angels dropped 8-6. Canning makes his fourth career start against the Red Sox in this contest. He is 1-0 with a 3.06 ERA, a 1.189 WHIP, eight walks and 16 strikeouts over 17.2 innings of work against them. Canning didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start at Fenway Park, which came on May 14, 2021. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in a game the Angels dropped 4-3.
Boston Red Sox Seeking to Get Back on Track Boston was swept at home by Baltimore as they wasted another stellar outing from a starting pitcher to fall in extra innings Thursday night. The Red Sox entered Friday tied for third in the AL East with a 7-6 mark, leaving them three games behind the Yankees for the top spot. On Thursday, Jarren Duran (run, RBI) and Wilyer Abreu (RBI) each had two hits for the Red Sox in the loss. Connor Wong hit a solo homer, his first of the year, as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning to tie the game. Garrett Whitlock didn’t factor in the decision as he threw five innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Isaiah Campbell (0-1) took the loss as he allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in one inning of work in relief.
Cooper Criswell is slated to take the hill for his season debut for the Red Sox as he takes the spot vacated by Nick Pivetta being on the IL for the moment. He made two starts with Triple-A Worcester of the International League this season, going 0-1 with a 0.87 ERA, a 1.065 WHIP, three walks and nine strikeouts over 10.1 innings of work. Criswell made six appearances, four starts, in spring training for Boston, going 0-1 with a 2.95 ERA, a 1.036 WHIP, three walks and 17 strikeouts over 18.1 innings of action. He didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career appearance against the Angels, which came in relief in the second game of a doubleheader on August 19, 2023 while with the Rays. In that game, he threw two innings, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts in an 18-4 Tampa Bay win. Criswell threw 2.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and one strikeout in the first game of a doubleheader on June 3, 2023 in his lone career outing at Fenway Park, which was an 8-5 Tampa Bay defeat.
