Tanner Houck, Red Sox eye more success vs. Angels FLM
The Red Sox will look to get the best of the Los Angeles Angels for a second consecutive weekend when the teams change home sites to begin another three-game series on Friday night in Boston.
The memory of Boston's series win in Anaheim last weekend was quickly erased when the Red Sox were swept in three games by the visiting Orioles this week. Baltimore used a six-run 10th inning to roll to a 9-4 decision on Thursday.
"I liked how we fought. We were there until the end," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "It was a tough series, but we've got to turn the page."
Jarren Duran's second double of the game got Boston a run back in the bottom of the 10th, but it was not nearly enough.
After another strong starting pitching outing from Garrett Whitlock, who tossed five innings of one-run ball, the Red Sox squandered an eighth-inning lead.
Boston right-hander Tanner Houck (2-0, 0.00 ERA) looks to continue an outstanding start to his fourth full season when he starts on Friday. He become the first pitcher in team history to throw six scoreless innings and strike out least six in each of his first two outings of a season.
Houck has 17 strikeouts and two walks through 12 innings. An extended pitch repertoire has helped him pitch deeper in games and lead his team to two wins in the early going.
"It's definitely a confidence booster, especially with all the pitches," Houck said. "Like I've talked about, the slider feels a lot better this year, splitter feels a lot better and then obviously adding the ... cutter and then obviously always throwing the sinker. Feels good to start out this way."
The 27-year-old fanned seven Angels and allowed just four hits across the first six frames of Boston's 12-2 win on Sunday, extending his scoreless-innings streak to 18 dating back to last season.
The Angels' only win last weekend came with Reid Detmers (2-0, 1.64 ERA) on the mound. The left-hander fanned 12 Red Sox over six innings of three-hit, one-run ball in Los Angeles' 2-1 victory on Saturday.
"The first two starts have been pretty good, but (you've) just got to keep it going and keep your confidence high," Detmers said. "Obviously there's gonna be ups and downs, but I came into this year just telling myself, 'There's always the next one.'"
Detmers, who has struck out 19 over his first 11 innings this season, is 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA in four career starts against Boston.
Houck is 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA in five career outings (three starts) against the Angels.
Following Boston's visit last week, the Angels dropped two of three to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays, including a 4-2 loss in the series finale on Wednesday.
Friday marks the start of a 10-game road trip for Los Angeles.
Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon will look to continue his bounce-back from an 0-for-21 start. He hit safely in all three games against Boston last weekend before going 3-for-5 with three runs on Monday in a 7-1 win over Tampa Bay, his best effort of the season.
"Rendon is a hands hitter," Angels manager Ron Washington said. "A hands hitter has to be able to stay behind the ball, and if you notice earlier he was behind the ball but late. Now, the more at-bats you get and more comfortable that he'd become with his hands, then you start getting them out there."

Injuries & Moves: Devers rests nagging left shoulder 2:47 AM ADT
MLB.com
April 11: Rafael Devers (left shoulder) day to day The star slugger has been dealing with a nagging left shoulder injury for a couple of weeks, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora decided to keep him out of the lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Orioles. After Boston's 9-4, 10-inning loss, it sounded as if the third baseman could miss a game or two in the home series against the Angels that starts Friday.
"I've been feeling it since Spring Training," Devers said. "But every time I was swinging, I was feeling it a little bit more and more. So for me, I think like two or three days [off] could be enough. I hope it doesn't keep bothering me after these two or three days, but that's something I can't control. That's why I'm just trying to keep working to get stronger, to get my shoulder back in a good way.”
April 11: INF/OF Romy Gonzalez to get X-rays for sore left wrist While making his first start since he was called up from Triple-A Worcester, Gonzalez tweaked his left wrist trying to make a play at shortstop in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Orioles. Gonzalez was sore enough on Thursday that he was scheduled to undergo X-rays prior to the game. The Red Sox are already short-handed in the middle infield with Trevor Story out for the season and Vaughn Grissom nearing a Minor League rehab assignment.
April 11: 2B Vaughn Grissom (left groin, left hamstring) close to starting rehab assignment Grissom is expected to fly to Syracuse, N.Y., on Thursday night and start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on either Friday or Saturday. Given the injury to shortstop Trevor Story, the Red Sox could really use Grissom's right-handed bat. However, he didn't play at all in Spring Training, so the club isn't likely to rush him during his rehab assignment, which can go a maximum of 20 days.
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
SS Trevor Story (dislocated left shoulder) Expected return: 2025 Story will undergo surgery later this week to repair a fracture of the glenoid rim in his left shoulder and is likely to miss the remainder of the 2024 season, according to chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. The surgery will be performed by noted orthopedist Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Friday in Los Angeles. Story dislocated his shoulder diving for a ball on April 5 in Anaheim. (Last updated: April 11)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: Late April/early May Grissom is expected to start a rehab assignment on April 12 or 13 for Triple-A Worcester. Given that he didn't play any Spring Training games, his rehab could be on the lengthier side. The maximum time for a position player on a Minor League rehab assignment is 20 days. (Last updated: April 11)
OF Rob Refsnyder (left pinkie toe) Expected return: Late April/early May Refsnyder started his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on April 10 and struck out in all three of his at-bats as the DH. The outfielder will get a day of rest on April 11 and play the outfield on April 12. (Last updated: April 11)

This is lovely news
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne Sounds like Devers will miss at least some of the Angels series by the way he was talking post-game tonight. "I've been feeling it since Spring Training," Devers said. RED SOX NOTEBOOK Sore shoulder sidelines Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers for a third game this season By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 11, 2024, 7:25 p.m.
Rafael Devers continues to experience pain/soreness in his left shoulder, and the Red Sox are unsure if the third baseman will require a stint on the injured list.
As a result, he received a game off for Thursday night’s series finale against the Orioles at Fenway Park.
“We’re just giving him the day. Hopefully that’s what he needs and go from there,” manager Alex Cora said prior to a 9-4 loss in 10 innings.
Devers doesn’t think it will be too long until he’s back on the field.
“Every time I was swinging, I was feeling it a little bit more and more,” said Devers after the loss. “So for me, I think like two or three days could be enough.”
Devers initially felt the tweak in his shoulder while hitting off a pitching machine at the end of spring training. He played Opening Day in Seattle, going 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs against the Mariners, but missed the next two games before returning for the finale of the four-game set.
The Sox then faced the Athletics, and that’s when the impact of the lingering injury became noticeable at the plate. Devers spent the entire spring spraying the baseball to the opposite field following an offseason hand adjustment (lowering them to the letters). However, during the series in Oakland, Devers’s approach became a bit more pull-happy as he tried to compensate for his ailing shoulder by jumping on the fastball earlier.
“You can see his reactions after he [swings and misses],” Cora said. “Whenever he swings and misses it kind of recoils. His swing is a little bit different than earlier in camp.”
Devers is off to a slow start, hitting .184 in 10 games with two homers and three RBIs.
Cora was asked if Devers will require a stay on the IL.
“Hopefully not,” Cora said. “Let’s see how it goes. But it’s too early to be grinding. That’s the way I see it. He’s too important to us for him to be grinding for his swing and then making it worse. He felt [the shoulder Wednesday]. He needed a day so we decided to give him a day today.” Kimbrel back at Fenway
When Craig Kimbrel closed out the Orioles’ 7-5 win Wednesday night, the outing marked his first appearance at Fenway since he recorded a save for the Red Sox with a scoreless ninth inning against the Dodgers in Game 2 of the 2018 World Series. Over the prior five seasons, none of the four teams for whom he pitched (Cubs, White Sox, Dodgers, Phillies) played in Boston while Kimbrel was on its roster.
“You would have thought I’d have been back by now,” Kimbrel said. “The last couple of days, being here in town and getting to take it in, those memories will always be with me. But when it was time to warm up, it was to make more good memories, just in a different uniform.”
Kimbrel saved 108 games, recorded a 2.44 ERA, and made three straight All-Star teams from 2016-18 with the Sox, but said that he never had meaningful conversations with the club about returning when he reached free agency after the 2018 campaign. In his 15th year, he entered Thursday with 419 career saves, eighth on the all-time list and three shy of former Braves teammate Billy Wagner.
“To be able to sit here and say that, it’s crazy how time goes by,” said Kimbrel. Casas thinks opposite
Triston Casas understands that one of his strengths includes pulling the ball in the air. It’s how he taps into his power. Yet he also understands the benefit of playing at Fenway, and how utilizing the short distance to the Green Monster could be beneficial.
“A lot of what I [want to do] has to do with the left-field wall,” Casas said, detailing one of his focuses this season. “To center and to right-center, those are pretty deep but play true to my swing and my strengths. But I want to utilize the opposite field a little bit more. I think this park is geared more toward lefthanded hitters and being successful for lefthanded hitters.”
Casas, who had just two homers to the opposite field last season at Fenway, hit one in that direction off Orioles lefthander Cole Irvin in the fifth inning.
“That was well-hit,” Cora said. “Hanging in there with the lefty. The at-bats are getting better.” Gonzalez’s hand in a splint
Romy Gonzalez’s left wrist was wrapped in a splint Thursday. Gonzalez was injured Wednesday when he went after a ball in the hole at shortstop on a sliding play, and felt his wrist get caught in the grass. X-Rays on Gonzalez’s wrist came back negative and he will remain day-to-day. With Devers out, Gonzalez was supposed to play third base in the series finale but had to be scratched. Pablo Reyes started at third and committed an eighth-inning error that proved costly … Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment Friday with Triple A Worcester and is scheduled to play second base at Syracuse … Outfielder Rob Refsnyder (toe) is also on a rehab assignment for Worcester but had an offday Thursday after playing Wednesday. He will play again Friday.

Red Sox calling Bobby Dalbec back up, meaning IL move likely for an infielder
Published: Apr. 12, 2024, 1:31 p.m.

Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON — Bobby Dalbec’s latest stay in Triple-A was a short one.
The Red Sox have summoned Dalbec back to Boston and are expected to activate him before Friday’s series opener against the Angels, multiple baseball sources. That means an injured infielder — either Romy Gonzalez or Rafael Devers — is likely going on the injured list. Initial indications Friday are that Gonzalez, who is dealing with a sprained left wrist, is the likely candidate to hit the IL for a short stint. But it’s also possible Devers, who is battling with nagging shoulder pain, will be shut down for some time. The Red Sox plan to wait to see how Devers and Gonzalez feel when they arrive at Fenway Park on Friday to finalize roster moves.
Late Thursday, Devers said he hoped 2-3 days off would be enough for his shoulder to get healthy. Earlier in the day, manager Alex Cora didn’t rule out an IL stint for the star third baseman.
“Let’s see how it goes. But it’s too early to be grinding,” Cora said. “That’s how I see it. He’s too important for us for him to be grinding with his swing and making it worse. He just felt yesterday that he needed a day so we decided to give him a day today.
“If he needs one, two, three (days) or if it’s an IL stint, then so be it. We have to take care of this.”
Either way, it appears Dalbec is likely to start at third base Friday against Angels lefty Reid Detmers. The Red Sox will face two lefties this weekend in Detmers and Sunday starter Tyler Anderson. Dalbec is the most natural replacement for Devers at third base in the near term; Pablo Reyes can play shortstop and second base in platoons with left-handed hitters David Hamilton and Enmanuel Valdez.
Dalbec made the Opening Day roster but didn’t get a hit (0-for-9, 6 strikeouts) in six games before being sent down to the WooSox on Monday. He homered for Worcester on Wednesday night in Syracuse.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 48m RHP Cooper Criswell on the taxi squad today. So the Sox may have a roster move coming.
In addition to recalling Bobby Dalbec, as I believe @chriscotillo has reported.
So if you had April 12 as the start of "lots of moving parts" season, good job.

So lets see here from Game Day and the twitter universe of the writers that loathe ownership as much as I do
right off the bat, a Hamilton error leads to a run
then cuz the defense was the main focus this spring the Halos score 2 more.
3-0 halos
And the same folks on twitter saying it is Dress Like a Seat Night.....that is good.
