Red Sox, Pirates out to rebound from series loss FLM
Two teams aiming to turn around their recent struggles will go head-to-head when the Pittsburgh Pirates host the Boston Red Sox to begin a three-game interleague series on Friday.
The Red Sox look to return to the win column with right-hander Brayan Bello (2-1, 3.92 ERA) on the mound for the fifth time this season.
Boston went 3-7 in its opening homestand after banking just one win over the Cleveland Guardians -- a 2-0 win Wednesday -- during a four-game series this week that followed Bello's last outing.
Bello, who has never faced Pittsburgh, threw 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball with eight strikeouts in his start last Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels.
Red Sox starters have allowed just 27 runs (21 earned) in 102 innings, leading MLB in ERA entering Thursday afternoon's 5-4 loss to Cleveland.
The team's issue, however, has been painfully clear.
"It sounds repetitive. People might say (Cora's) full of (expletive), but we need to play better defense," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "That's the bottom line."
To be exact, Boston's defense has made 20 errors -- turning into 26 unearned runs -- in 20 games. The loss of shortstop Trevor Story for the season and injuries to Tyler O'Neill and Rafael Devers this week haven't helped the cause.
The Red Sox are last in the American League East, a half-game behind the Toronto Blue Jays.
"Maybe certain guys might have put a little more pressure on themselves just because we were in a tight game," first baseman Triston Casas said. "It seemed like they were going hand in hand like, we couldn't get anything going offensively and then there was just this snowball effect."
Starting pitching has also been solid for Pittsburgh, but it will have to rebound after suffering a three-game sweep to the New York Mets that concluded with a 9-1 loss Wednesday.
Left-hander Bailey Falter went five innings and gave up his only runs on a two-run homer by Starling Marte in the third inning.
The Pirates were 13-for-89 (.146) and notched only four hits with runners in scoring position while being swept.
"We have to have better at-bats," Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. "Up until (New York), we've had pretty consistent at-bats. (In that) series, we got pitched to. We need to make an adjustment. (Thursday was) probably a good time for an off day. I think we have to be more aggressive."
Pittsburgh scored just one run in each of the final two losses of the series, but first baseman Rowdy Tellez -- who is 3-for-19 with no RBIs over his last seven games -- sees no reason to panic at such an early juncture.
"It's a long season. You are going to have your ups and downs," Tellez said. "Sometimes, you have to give credit to the other side. They came up with some big situations. It's three games."
Pirates right-hander Quinn Priester will make his season debut on Friday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday. Per the report, Priester will replace left-hander Marco Gonzales (forearm muscle strain), who went on the 15-day injured list Sunday.
Priester, who was Pittsburgh's first-round pick in 2019, has never faced the Red Sox.

Injuries & Moves: Updates on Devers, O'Neill April 18th, 2024

LATEST NEWS
April 18: 3B Rafael Devers has bone bruise on left knee Devers underwent an MRI Thursday morning that showed a bone bruise and no structural damage in his left knee, which he tweaked making a play on defense in Tuesday's loss. Devers sat out Thursday's finale of the homestand. At this point, the Red Sox are hopeful Devers can avoid a stint on the 10-day injured list. But the star slugger is taking a wait-and-see approach.
"Yeah, I don't know yet," said Devers. "But the thing that I know is I don't want to go back too soon and go back to that place. I'm going to take my time to be ready. When I feel good and when I feel 100 percent to play, that’s when I’m going to play."
April 18: OF Tyler O'Neill placed on 7-day injured list; OF Rob Refsnyder reinstated from 10-day injured list Three days after O'Neill had a head-on collision with Devers that left him with eight stitches on his forehead, the outfielder was placed on the 7-day injured list retroactive to April 16. The 7-day IL is specifically for players who are experiencing concussion symptoms. Depending on how O'Neill progresses, he could be activated as early as April 23, when the Red Sox open a three-game series in Cleveland. O'Neill said that it's his goal, but he also knows he needs to listen to his body and the training staff.
"So I've had a lot of dizziness, so I'm fighting through that a little bit," O'Neill said. "A lot of like fogginess. First couple of days, I was slow to think. It took me a little bit to recover from that. I'm feeling better now, so I feel like I'm on the right path, sort of through the last stages of lightheadedness. And I'm just a little more fatigued than I'm used to. But I'm thinking better now. And I feel like I'm on the right track."
April 18: LHP Cam Booser will be selected to roster from Triple-A Worcester on Friday A feel-good story will happen this weekend in Pittsburgh, as hard-throwing lefty reliever Booser will be selected to the roster for his first stint in the Major Leagues, sources told MLB.com. Booser, 31, retired from baseball after the 2017 season and became a carpenter. But he made his way back to professional baseball in 2021, advancing himself from the independent Chicago Dogs and then to the Minor League systems of the Diamondbacks and Red Sox. Booser was throwing in the upper 90s for the Red Sox in Spring Training. In four appearances for Worcester, Booser had 15 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Lefty Joe Jacques, who pitched 1 2/3 innings in Thursday's loss to the Guardians, is a likely candidate to be optioned to Triple-A. The Sox will also have to add Booser to the 40-man roster. Trevor Story, who is out for the season following left shoulder surgery, can be moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL to open up a spot.
April 18: RHP Nick Pivetta to throw bullpen on Saturday Pivetta will take a big step in his recovery from a right elbow flexor strain when he throws a bullpen session on Saturday. This will be Pivetta's first time off the mound since he was placed on the injured list on April 9.
OF Tyler O'Neill (concussion) Expected return: April 23 at the earliest O'Neill was placed on the 7-day IL -- which is specifically for players with concussion-related symptoms -- three days after his head-on collision with Rafael Devers. The move was made retroactive to April 16, which means O'Neill could be back as early as April 23 if his symptoms resolve. The right-handed hitter has played in 15 games with Boston, making 10 starts in right field and four in left field while hitting .313 with a team-leading seven home runs. (Last updated: April 18) 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) Expected return: TBD Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13, retroactive to April 11, with a sprained left wrist. An MRI taken on April 17 showed no structural damage.
"Everything came out clean, so now it's about tolerating the pain or whatever he has going on and keep getting treatment," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "But as far as like structurally, he's good. (Last updated: April 18)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: Late April/early May Grissom will continue his Minor League rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester when he plays second base on April 19. He was supposed to do so on April 18, but that game was rained out. Grissom was limited to DH in his first three games. Given that Grissom didn't play any Spring Training games, his rehab could be on the lengthier side. The maximum time for a position player on a Minor League rehab assignment is 20 days. MLB suspends Pirates' Aroldis Chapman for 'inappropriate actions'
ESPN News Services
Apr 18, 2024, 05:58 PM ET
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Aroldis Chapman has been suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount for "inappropriate actions" during Monday's game against the New York Mets, MLB announced Thursday.
Unless he appeals, Chapman is scheduled to start the suspension Friday, when the Pirates host the Boston Red Sox.
Chapman was ejected by plate umpire Edwin Moscoso after giving up a two-run double in the eighth inning of Monday's loss to the Mets.
"He evidently said something that the umpire did not like," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after Monday's game.

Pete Abraham @peteabe Cam Booser added to the roster and Joe Jacques DFA'd.
Booser has No. 71.
Most recent 71s: Ryan Sherriff, Franklin German and Phillips Valdez.
Butch Hobson managed Cam Booser in independent ball. His scouting report:
"He's a bulldog. Goes right after the hitter, good slider and good velocity. If there's a brawl, get behind him. He's a tough buck. I loved having him."

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo Cora says Devers remains day to day and will likely avoid IL.
Winckowski sounds like a strong candidate to start Sunday.
Cora on Devers: "He’s doing OK. Obviously, we’ll take it day by day with him. Moving better, feeling better, so we’ll see how it goes."
Pivetta bullpen Sat... After that, likely another bullpen then live BP, etc. "It's trending in the right direction."
