José Ramírez homers as Guardians continue best start in franchise history with 4-1 win over Red Sox AP
CLEVELAND (AP) José Ramírez homered in the eighth inning, Tyler Freeman and Bryan Rocchio had RBIs in the seventh when Cleveland finally got to Boston's Tanner Houck and the Guardians kept up the best start in their 124-year history with a 4-1 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday night.
Ramírez, who had some recent tough luck on hard-hit balls, connected leading off the eighth inning against Cam Booser for his fourth homer.
Batting right-handed, the switch-hitting Ramírez drove a 1-2 pitch that was off the plate into the right-field seats - his first opposite-field homer from the right side since 2017.
“That ball was up and away and he barrels it and hits it out of the ballpark,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "He’s a stud. He’s a good player. Obviously, I’m not rooting for him but you’re in awe. I was like, ‘For real, bro?’
"He’s amazing and that at-bat tells the whole story. He’s one of the best players in baseball.”
Cora got no argument from first-year Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, who remembers playing against Ramírez.
“I was in awe of him for years and now I like being in awe of him,” Vogt said. “That top tier of player, they do things that almost every night make your jaw drop.”
Houck (3-2) threw a three-hit shutout against the Guardians last week. He held them scoreless for six more innings before Freeman hit a run-scoring single and Rocchio added a sacrifice fly off reliever Brennan Bernardino.
An early-season surprise, the Guardians won their fifth straight and improved MLB's best record to 17-6, matching the club's best start through 23 games.
Cleveland also was 17-6 in 1999 and 1966.
“Right now, it’s just a number,” said outfielder Will Brennan said of Cleveland's hot start. “It’s early. It's April, but we know that our preparation’s going to continue to put us in positions to win ballgames.
"With our pitching and the way our offense is, it’s going to be tough to beat us.”
Wilyer Abreu homered for the Red Sox, who were held in check for six innings by Ben Lively.
Making his debut at Progressive Field, Lively warmed up to “Yellow Submarine” by the Beatles and then allowed just one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked none and struck out seven.
Lively joked that some of his young teammates didn't recognize his music choice.
“A lot of the kids in the dugout didn’t know what song it was,” he said. “I like old songs. I listen to everything.”
Scott Barlow (1-2) got two outs in the seventh, Hunter Gaddis pitched the eighth and Emmanuel Clase struck out the side in the ninth for his seventh save in nine chances.
The Guardians finally ended Houck's scoreless streak against them at 15 innings on Freeman's RBI single in the seventh.
Brennan doubled leading off inning and scored on Freeman's single up the middle. Freeman stole second before Houck walked Estevan Florial and Cora brought in Bernardino, who walked pinch-hitter David Fry and gave up Rocchio's sac fly.
Red Sox outfielder Tyler O'Neill went 1 for 4 in his first game back since colliding last week with third baseman Rafael Devers chasing a pop up. O'Neill sustained a concussion and needed eight stitched to close a cut in his head.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: 1B Triston Casas (broken rib) is out indefinitely after injuring himself while making a swing on Saturday in Pittsburgh. Casas, who had six homers already this season, told Cora that he had discomfort last week before getting hurt fouling off a pitch. ... Devers (knee bone bruise) was expected to play for the first time since April 17, but Cora delayed his return because of the wet conditions. Devers will play Wednesday.
Guardians: RHP Gavin Williams (elbow) has not yet met with the team's medical staff to determine the next step in his rehab. Williams pitched three innings on Saturday in Arizona without any issues before flying to Cleveland. Williams hurt his elbow throwing a weighted ball in March.
UP NEXT
Guardians RHP Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 3.44) faces the Red Sox after beating them last week for his first win with Cleveland since 2020. Boston will start RHP Cooper Criswell (0-1, 4.26).

With higher standards, Houck disappointed despite quality start April 23rd, 2024 Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
CLEVELAND -- Six days after throwing his unforgettable “Maddux” against the Guardians, Red Sox righty Tanner Houck was back out there against the same team, albeit on the road this time and in much more challenging weather conditions.
There was no “Maddux” (a shutout in less than 100 pitches) Tuesday, but still another positive step in the progression of the vastly improved Houck.
The righty went six-plus innings, giving up five hits and two runs while walking three and striking out four, albeit in a 4-1 loss for the Red Sox.
For the second straight start, Houck pitched into the seventh inning.
“He did an amazing job,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “Like I told him today, [the starters are] earning the right to go deep into games. There’s no baby gloves here. He was throwing the ball well. “
Houck had the slightest of leads at 1-0 when he took the ball to start the seventh and was quickly touched up for a double by Will Brennan, a game-tying single by Tyler Freeman and a walk. And that was the end of his night.
“A [splitter] that he hung,” said Cora. “A slider down the middle. That was it. Overall, another great outing.”
Perhaps the most telling thing from Houck’s postgame remarks is that he wasn’t satisfied with the performance. His standards are higher this season and they should be, when you consider he has a 1.65 ERA through five starts.
“All in all, it was an OK start,” said Houck. “I think that my 0-2 pitches and putaway pitches weren’t as well executed as last time.”
Getting to the seventh inning again was a source of satisfaction for the 27-year-old, but not getting an out in that seventh was a source of disappointment.
“That was the goal, being able to pitch deeper into games this year and to see lineups three times,” said Houck. “But with that being said, I want to go out there and finish the seven and put us in the best position to win. Too many walks as well. Three walks is unacceptable, one of them being a four-pitch walk. Still stuff to work on, still stuff to grow with. It’s forever about getting better and pushing yourself.”
The respect for Houck is also growing on the other side of the field.
“The only thing I can say is his splitter wasn’t as sharp tonight. It looked like he was having trouble being consistent with it. But he was still unbelievable,” said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt.
“The way he can spin the ball, and then uses his sinker to keep everybody off of the spin is great. He’s one of the elite pitchers. We’re very fortunate that we were able to stay in the game and get to him, finally.”
Abreu stays hot The Red Sox will be without the big left-handed bat of Triston Casas for weeks, if not months, as the club officially announced Tuesday he has a left rib fracture.
That increases the need for others to step up, and Wilyer Abreu seems primed to do just that. The rookie left-handed hitter belted a solo shot to right to break a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh. It was the fourth straight game Abreu has given the Red Sox the lead, and he’s been on base his last 11 games, hitting .361 (13-for-36) with seven extra-base hits while drawing seven walks over that span.
“He was long the first two pitches, then he got back into the at-bat and he was short on a fastball inside,” said Cora. “There's a reason he’s playing. We’re going to keep talking about this kid because he’s good. His approach is really good. He understands what he needs to do at the plate to be successful. He's a good defender. ... He's a good baserunner. He’s a good player.”
This is a different Abreu than the guy who started the season 2-for-18 with nine strikeouts. The difference was when Cora declared he was going to start playing against all right-handed starters.
“Yeah, obviously, it helps a lot to know that you're going play every day. You get into a rhythm and and that's what you want,” Abreu said. “If I’m in that lineup, I'm going to be productive for the team. That's what I'm trying to do and that's what I'm looking for.”

Red Sox continue to encounter obstacles with injuries and the continued absence of Rafael Devers By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated April 23, 2024, 8:55 p.m.
CLEVELAND — The Red Sox arrived at Progressive Field on Tuesday tied for the third wild card playoff berth in the American League.
Stop laughing, it’s true.
But it was another day defined by obstacles, not possibilities, in a 4-1 loss against the Guardians.
As expected, tests back in Boston showed that first baseman Triston Casas has a fractured rib. He will be out “for a while” according to manager Alex Cora. There’s no timetable other than he should be able to come back this season.
The Sox plan to replace one of their most productive hitters with Bobby Dalbec. He was 0 for 2 before being pinch-hit for and is now 1 for 32 with 18 strikeouts on the season.
“He’s going to play. We’re going to play him a lot,” Cora said. “The front office is studying the situation and looking around to see if we go somewhere else for that.”
Other than catchers, the Sox did not stock their Triple A roster with many experienced veterans. The lack of options has become an issue.
Cora pointed out that Dalbec was a productive hitter in 2021, which is true. But he has a .604 OPS in 153 major league games since and struck out in 37 percent of his plate appearances.
“He’s my first baseman,” Cora said.
But only to a point. With the Sox down by a run in the eighth inning, Reese McGuire pinch hit for Dalbec and struck out.
The other hurdle on Tuesday was the continued absence of Rafael Devers.
Devers sat out for the ninth time in the last 12 games. He initially had a sore left shoulder then a bone bruise in his left knee.
Devers took batting practice on the field in Pittsburgh on Sunday then went through a lengthy series of agility drills. Cora said at the time that Devers was ready to play but he was being cautious with his best player.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Cora said when asked if Devers would play on Tuesday. The manager said Devers was pressing to play but was talked into waiting.
Tuesday came and no Devers. Cora said the rainy forecast was a factor in his decision.
Devers played in 94 percent of the games from 2019-23. He’s not soft. He took batting practice on Tuesday and seemed ready to go. But it was another day on the bench.
There were several opportunities where Devers could have pinch hit but wasn’t used.
Cora said after the game that Devers would return on Wednesday. We’ll see.
Cora wants his best player healthy for the long run. But at some point, you’d like to see Devers insist he has to be in the lineup and not take no for an answer.
The other mystery is Masataka Yoshida, the $90 million bench player.
He was out of the lineup for the fourth time in six games as the Sox used Wilyer Abreu in left field and Tyler O’Neill as the designated hitter.
Yoshida is hitting .250 with a .708 OPS, which isn’t dreadful but certainly isn’t what was expected when he was signed. Yoshida has a .694 OPS with seven home runs over 308 at-bats since the All-Star break last season.
The Sox played up the idea that Yoshida would improve this season now that he had the experience of playing in the majors. But they have relied less on him, not more.
When asked why, Cora has simply said he prefers to use other outfielders and that the DH spot has been needed for other players.
“You have to be a little creative,” the manager said.
Yoshida pinch hit in the eighth inning and was hit by a pitch. The way things are going he’ll be out for two months.

Surging Guardians looking to avoid letdown vs. Red Sox FLM
Amid their stellar start to the season, the Cleveland Guardians have taken advantage of the injury-plagued Boston Red Sox.
Winners of five in a row, the Guardians aim for their fifth win in six games against the visiting Red Sox on Wednesday night.
At 17-6 with eight wins in the last nine games, Cleveland is off to its best start since 1999.
The Guardians, who have a major-league-best plus-55 run differential, have outscored the Red Sox 25-14 while going 4-1 vs. Boston, including a 4-1 victory in the opener of this three-game set.
"It's early, it's April, but we know that our preparation is going to continue to lead to putting us in position to win ballgames," Guardians outfielder Will Brennan said. "With our pitching and how our offense is, it's going to be tough to beat us."
Brennan had two hits Tuesday, and his leadoff double sparked a two-run seventh inning that gave Cleveland the lead. He is 4-for-13 against the Red Sox this season.
Teammate Jose Ramirez homered Tuesday and is batting .390 with six home runs and 12 RBIs in his last 10 home games vs. Boston.
Scheduled Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 3.44 ERA) finally earned a victory in his fourth start of the season, and it came against the Red Sox on Thursday. Lasting a season-high 5 2/3 innings, the veteran right-hander allowed two runs, three walks and four hits while striking out five during the 5-4 victory.
Boston's Wilyer Abreu had a double with an RBI against Carrasco last week. After playing 28 games to begin his major league career for the Red Sox last season, Abreu is 9-for-20 with two homers and six RBIs in his last five contests.
"There's a reason why we're talking about this kid," Boston manager Alex Cora said after Abreu hit one of those home runs Tuesday. "His approach is good."
Despite missing injured key contributors such as Trevor Story (shoulder), Triston Casas (rib), Garrett Whitlock (oblique), Lucas Giolito (elbow) and Nick Pivetta (elbow), Boston is two games above .500 and slated to get star Rafael Devers back Wednesday after he missed five games with a knee issue. Devers is batting just .188 this season and is 1-for-4 with a pair of walks vs. Carrasco during his career.
Boston teammate Rob Refsnyder is 1-for-5 against Carrasco. He recorded three hits Tuesday and is 7-for-16 with four doubles in five games since returning from a toe injury.
"We're just going to go out there and play with the 26 guys that we have, and we're going to try to win every single game," Red Sox reliever Justin Slaten said, according to the club's official website.
Cooper Criswell (0-1, 4.26) is scheduled to make his third appearance, and second start, since debuting for the Red Sox on April 13, when he allowed a two-run homer in four innings against the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander's most recent outing came in 2 1/3 innings of relief Thursday, when he yielded four runs, but only one earned, against the Guardians.
Andres Gimenez and Josh Naylor each had run-scoring hits off Criswell in that contest.

Is Wednesday the day Rafael Devers returns?
The third baseman, who has a bone bruise in left knee, was initially supposed to return to the lineup Tuesday. Boston lost, 4-1, to Cleveland to open the series on Tuesday. After Thursday’s finale, the Red Sox will return home to face the Cubs in a three-game series culminating with a Sunday Night Baseball appearance on ESPN.
But first, we’ve got Cooper Criswell on the mound opposite Carlos Carrasco.
