Connor Wong homers twice, Rafael Devers connects for solo shot as Red Sox hammer Guardians 8-0 AP
CLEVELAND (AP) Connor Wong homered twice, Rafael Devers connected in his return to Boston's lineup and the banged-up Red Sox got another solid pitching effort in an 8-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night.
Wong hit leadoff homers in the second and sixth innings off Carlos Carrasco (1-2). He added an RBI single in the ninth and had four hits.
Devers missed the previous five games with a bone bruise in his knee. After testing his knee by scoring on a double in the first, he homered in the fifth and the Red Sox piled up a season-high 16 hits to cool off baseball's hottest team with a four-hit shutout.
“Any time that guy is in the lineup it completely changes it," Wong said of Devers. "He can hit the ball really far at any point in the game so it’s great when he’s in there.”
Rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu also had four hits and drove in a run in Boston's second shutout against Cleveland in a week.
With three starters on the injured list, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was counting on his bullpen to get him through a game or two and rookie Cooper Criswell (1-1) gave him five scoreless innings in his fourth career start.
Criswell allowed three singles before Cora used Joely Rodríguez and Zack Kelly for two innings apiece to finish off the Guardians.
Despite numerous injuries, the Red Sox have gotten good pitching.
They lowered their team ERA to 1.73, the lowest through 25 games since 1920.
“We needed something like that,” Cora said. "Coop was amazing. Like I said before, we’re going to keep going, man. That’s who we are. We’re going to pitch. We will pitch. We’re playing better defense.”
The Guardians had their winning streak stopped at five straight. They came in with MLB's best record and came one win shy of matching the 1966 team (18-6) for the best start in franchise history through 24 games.
It was Carrasco's 200th career start for Cleveland and 100th at Progressive Field. The 37-year-old returned to the Guardians this season after being traded in 2020.
“It means a lot because I did my first one in September 2009,” said Carrasco. “Just getting back here, I just want to do so well to win this game. But it’s part of the game, so tomorrow’s another day.”
Before the game, the Red Sox placed starter Brayan Bello on the IL with lat tightness, the latest injury for a Boston team that has been dealing with more than its share of sprains and strains this spring.
“It's hard,” Cora said. “We're going to continue. Nobody is going to feel sorry for the Red Sox.”
Wong, who came in batting .393 with three homers against Cleveland, connected for his fourth homer in the second, driving a 1-1 pitch from Carrasco over the wall in straightaway center to make it 2-0.
It was Boston's MLB-leading 20th homer on the road.
The Red Sox jumped on Carrasco for a run in the first as Devers singled and scored on Abreu's two-out RBI double.
As the All-Star broke for third, Cora could hardly watch.
“I was praying, to be honest with you," he said. "He didn’t look too good. He let it go at the end, but he wasn’t moving great.”
Devers, who has also missed time with a shoulder injury, said his knee held up fine.
“I wasn't scared to go full speed there," he said through a translator. "I haven't run full speed since I got my injury, but I felt good.”
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: Starting RHP Nick Pivetta (elbow) will throw a live batting practice Saturday before the team decides whether to send him out on a minor league rehab assignment. ... RHP Garrett Whitlock (oblique) is playing catch in Boston.
Guardians: RHP Gavin Williams (elbow) received an anti-inflammatory injection after suffering a setback in his recovery. Williams, who was expected to have a major role this season, felt soreness following a three-inning simulated game last weekend. Williams got hurt throwing a weighted ball in March. He'll won't throw for at least one week before being re-evaluated.
UP NEXT
Guardians RHP Triston McKenzie (2-2, 5.00 ERA) will start the series finale against Red Sox RHP Chase Anderson (0-0 2.77).

Welcome back, Raffy! Devers slugs HR, 3 hits in return April 24th, 2024 Ian Browne

CLEVELAND -- Rafael Devers didn’t just return to action on Wednesday night at Progressive Field, but he raked and helped lift his injury-riddled Red Sox to a 8-0 victory over the Guardians.
After missing five straight games due to a bone bruise on his left knee and suiting up for the first time in a week, Devers belted a single, a homer and a double while reaching in his first four plate appearances.
As if to say, “My knee is fine,” Devers roared all the way around from first base in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Wilyer Abreu.
Well, maybe he didn’t quite roar around the bases.
“I was praying, to be honest with you,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “He didn’t look too good, and then he kind of let it go at the end. He wasn’t moving great.”
Devers admitted having trepidation regarding his 270-foot trek on a healing left knee.
“Obviously I was scared to go full speed there,” Devers said. “I haven't run full speed since I got my injury, but I felt good. I didn’t feel any pain or anything like that. I'm gonna take it day by day to see how I keep feeling, but everything went well.”
When the baseball first left Abreu’s bat, Devers planned on taking it conservatively and perhaps going first to third. But he read the play and turned on the jets as it developed.
“As soon as I saw the ball go through the outfielder, that's when I started putting some pressure on to try to run faster,” Devers said. “Until then, I was trying to take it easy. But when I saw it go by and I had the opportunity to score, that's when I went for it.”
In the fifth, Devers figured out a way to go much easier on his knee, when he took a low and outside changeup by Carlos Carrasco and drilled it into the seats in left-center field. Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
How did Devers swing the bat so well after not being at game speed for a week?
“I never stopped hitting,” said Devers. “I never stopped doing my routine even though I couldn't swing hard. I was always doing my work there, my mechanical work, so that's why when I came back, my timing wasn’t too much off. That's why everything went well because I kept doing my work during this time off.”
Forgive Cora for not being all that surprised by the impactful return to action by Devers.
“We know who he is,” Cora said. “He’s very important to our offense. He likes hitting here, we know that. To have him in the lineup is always good.”
In 85 career at-bats in Cleveland, Devers is slashing .329/.412/.647 with seven homers and 15 RBIs. Get the latest from the Red Sox

His return to action could not have been better timed.
Prior to the game, the Red Sox had yet another injury to announce, as Brayan Bello (right lat tightness) joined fellow rotation members Nick Pivetta and Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list.
This news came a day after the club revealed a left rib fracture for key slugger Triston Casas.
But the Red Sox, a respectable 14-11, have developed a next-man-up mentality.
Not only did Devers have a big night, but Cooper Criswell, one of the fill-in starters, fired five scoreless innings.
And Connor Wong belted a pair of homers as part of a four-hit night.
“It's very good,” said Devers. “I don't know how people outside the organization see us, but I think we’re a very capable group. We have very young talent here. They're doing their job and they’re stepping up and it’s very positive for us to win despite all the injuries.”
It goes without saying that it’s much easier for the Red Sox to survive being short-handed when Devers isn’t one of the players who is out of action.
“Anytime that guy’s in the lineup, it completely changes it,” said Wong. “He can hit the ball really far at any point in the game, and so it's great when he’s in there.”

Injuries & Moves: Devers returns; Bello to IL April 24th, 2024

LATEST NEWS
April 24: 3B Rafael Devers returns to lineup While there seems to be no let-up to Boston's injuries, the club did get star slugger Devers back in the lineup on Wednesday night. Devers missed the previous five games with a bone bruise in his left knee. The left-handed hitter served as the designated hitter on Wednesday and is scheduled to play third base in Thursday's series finale.
April 24: RHP Brayan Bello (right lat tightness) placed on 15-day injured list retroactive to April 21; RHP Zack Kelly recalled from Triple-A Worcester Bello was scheduled to start Thursday's series finale but instead joins fellow Red Sox starters Nick Pivetta and Garrett Whitlock on the injured list. The Red Sox don't believe Bello's injury is serious and are confident he will return as soon as his IL stint expires on May 7. Bello, who started on Opening Day, is 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in five starts.
The 29-year-old Kelly hasn't allowed a run in nine innings over six games with Worcester this season. Signed by the Red Sox as a Minor League free agent in January 2021, Kelly has posted a 3.91 ERA (10 ER/23 IP) in 21 career Major League games, all with Boston (2022-23).
RHP Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain) Expected return: Early May Whitlock suffered the injury during his start on April 16, and had to come out after four innings and 54 pitches. He remained in Boston during the team's series vs. the Pirates, and he played catch on Saturday. Given that Whitlock hasn't been cleared to throw off the mound yet, it's doubtful he will be able to return when he is first eligible, on May 1. The righty is off to a strong start with a 1-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts. (Last updated: April 24)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: Late April/early May Grissom continued his Minor League rehab assignment for the Triple-A WooSox on April 24, drawing three walks in his four plate appearances. Grissom could return in the next week or so. Position players are allotted 20 days on a rehab stint, and Grissom's is set to expire on May 1. (Last updated: April 24)

RED SOX NOTEBOOK The hurts just keep on coming: Red Sox place Brayan Bello on injured list By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 24, 2024, 5:23 p.m.
CLEVELAND — And the injuries keep coming for the Red Sox, who on Wednesday added righthander Brayan Bello to the 15-day injured list with tightness in his right lat.
Bello initially felt soreness during his April 14 start against the Angels. He pitched through it in his following start against the Pirates, but ultimately he and the Sox decided not to push it further.
“I don’t think it’s that serious,” said Bello through interpreter Carlos Villoria Benitez before Wednesday night’s 8-0 win over the Guardians. “All it is is tightness. I can still throw.”
Bello, who was scheduled to start in Thursday’s series finale, added that the IL stint is just precautionary and he’s confident about returning in the minimum number of days. Manager Alex Cora hopes that’s the case.
“He’ll be OK,” said Cora. “This is more about taking care of him. Hopefully he’ll be back when he’s supposed to be back. He’s very important to this organization. Not only now but in the future, and I think we take care of this and he’ll be fine.”
To fill Bello’s roster spot, the Red Sox recalled Zack Kelly from Triple A Worcester. Kelly made an immediate impression with two perfect innings to close out Wednesday’s win, striking out three.
Instead of Bello, Chase Anderson will get the start in Thursday’s series finale.
However long Bello is out, it won’t help the Sox’ issues with their paper-thin rotation. Three of the five starters who began the season on the active roster are now on the IL.
Nick Pivetta (elbow) was the first to catch the injury bug, followed by Garrett Whitlock (oblique). Bello joined them Wednesday. With Lucas Giolito already lost for the year after having elbow surgery during spring training, the Sox now have four injured starters.
“Obviously it’s difficult,” said Bello, “but we’re going to be ready to come back healthy and ready to go.”
The Sox rotation had seen a breakthrough early in the season. After Cooper Criswell’s five innings of shutout ball Wednesday, Sox starters boast a 1.73 ERA — the lowest rotation ERA through 25 games in the divisional era, surpassing the Athletics’ 1.79 ERA in 1978. Yet Cora has had to shuffle his starters because of the injuries. That extends to the position players, too.
“It’s not hard at all,” said Cora regarding how difficult it is to constantly adjust his lineup. “Somebody is going to have to step up.”
Yoshida role
Rafael Devers (bone bruise) was back in the lineup Wednesday but at DH and not his usual third base spot. Similar to Tyler O’Neill, who returned from the seven-day IL Tuesday and filled the DH role, Cora wanted to ease Devers back into the fold after missing the last five games.
Nevertheless that meant Masataka Yoshida was out of the starting lineup for a second straight game against a righty.
“He’s an everyday DH, man, I don’t know what the big deal is,” said Cora, who was asked about Yoshida’s role. “O’Neill had to DH yesterday. Raffy had to DH today. Our outfield is O’Neill, [Wilyer] Abreu, and [Jarren] Duran.”
Yoshida’s role is appropriate. Beyond being a contact hitter, there isn’t much in his toolkit. He’s flaunted occasional power, but is a below-average runner and defender. As such, his only position is DH, a position he fills, for the most part, when only righthander’s are on the mound.
“Obviously it’s not up to me to decide; it’s up to them,” Yoshida said through a team translator. “It’s the team’s decision, so it’s not something I can control.”
Yoshida said he’s been in contact communication with the team regarding how they envision his on-field duties. That hasn’t been an issue.
One issue, however, is that Yoshida is in the second year of a five-year, $90 million deal, and has already been relegated to a DH after being an everyday left fielder last year.
Asked if he’s frustrated by his role, Yoshida took nearly seconds to answer, careful about his word choice.
“It’s really difficult to describe how I feel,” he said. Cold in Cleveland
Wednesday’s game-time temperature was just 43 degrees, marking the coldest game of the year for the Red Sox … Pivetta will throw a live batting practice Saturday, and then the team will decide whether he needs a rehab start or two … Whitlock is playing catch back in Boston.

Short-handed Red Sox seek series win vs. Guardians FLM
Despite a rash of early-season injuries, the Boston Red Sox have stayed afloat.
After an impressive showing against the league's hottest team, the Red Sox can close an already successful six-game trip with a series victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday.
Despite missing Trevor Story (shoulder), Lucas Giolito (elbow), Triston Casas (rib), Garrett Whitlock (oblique) and Nick Pivetta (elbow), the Red Sox are three games above .500, lead the majors with a 1.73 starters ERA and near the top with 33 home runs.
"That's the nature of this business," Boston manager Alex Cora said of the injuries. "It's 162-plus and you're going to go through stuff like this."
On the same day Boston learned originally scheduled Thursday starter Brayan Bello was placed on the 15-day injured list with lat tightness, it got five strong innings from Cooper Criswell and 16 hits from the offense in Wednesday's 8-0 win at Cleveland.
Catcher Connor Wong homered twice and joined Wilyer Abreu with four hits apiece. Meanwhile, Rafael Devers also went deep and was a triple shy of the cycle with two RBIs in his return from missing five games with a knee issue. The Red Sox evened the series by snapping the Guardians' five-game winning streak and improving to 4-1 on their road swing.
"We got to keep going," said Cora, whose club is 11-4 on the road this season. "Overall, a good one (Wednesday), we got a chance to win the series (Thursday) and go home."
Wong is batting .370 with five homers and 11 RBIs this season. He's homered five times in nine career contests versus Cleveland. Meanwhile, Abreu is 13-for-25 with seven RBIs in his past six games.
Devers, who raised his average from .188 to .231 after Wednesday's performance, Wong and Abreu all look to stay hot when the Red Sox face scheduled Cleveland starter Triston McKenzie (2-2, 5.00 ERA), who tries to ease an up-and-down start to his season.
McKenzie has alternated between bad and good starts during his first four outings. The right-hander looks to build on a solid effort after giving up a solo homer, two other hits and three walks while striking out six through five innings in Cleveland's 10-2 home victory against Oakland on Friday.
McKenzie has an 0-1 record with a 5.14 ERA in one career start against the Red Sox in July 2022.
Wednesday's loss was just the second in 10 games for the 17-7 Guardians, who entered that contest with a plus-55 run differential. However, they were held to four hits and were shut out by Boston for the second time this season.
Jose Ramirez, who doubled Wednesday to raise his average to .240, has hit safely in eight of the past nine.
"(Ramirez) hits the ball hard, doesn't get down on himself," first-year Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said.
"I can't say enough about what he brings to this lineup."
With Bello out, the Red Sox are likely to use a bullpen approach in the series finale. According to MLB.com, veteran right-hander Chase Anderson (0-0, 2.77 ERA) is slated to start after making six relief appearances this season.
Anderson is 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in three appearances (two starts) against the Guardians in his career.
Red Sox at Guardians Thursday, at 1:10 PM EST Partly Cloudy It's expected to be 51° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 9 MPH wind blowing in Cleveland at 1:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures are expected for Thursday afternoon's game at Progressive Field. Moderate winds blowing in from right field will reduce home run chances in that direction.

José Ramírez hits grand slam, AL-leading Guardians beat Red Sox 6-4AP CLEVELAND (AP) José Ramírez belted his sixth career grand slam and had three hits, Will Brennan added a solo homer and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Boston Red Sox 6-4 on Thursday. Cleveland has the best record in the American League at 18-7 and matched the second-best mark in franchise history through 25 games. The Guardians won their season series against Boston 5-2 -- all in an 11-day span. “Once the guys arrive in the clubhouse before the game, you feel that good energy,” Ramírez said through interpreter Agustin Rivero. “With that energy we can compete with anybody, so I think that’s a good energy to have.” Rafael Devers had three hits and Rob Refsnyder tripled in a run for the Red Sox. Jarren Duran added an RBI single in the sixth for Boston, which went 4-2 on a six-game trip through Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Ramírez’s slam off Chase Anderson (0-1) came one pitch after he appeared to strike out to end the second, but Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire couldn’t hold onto the foul tip. Brennan also homered in the inning as Cleveland went ahead 5-0. “The biggest thing is I put myself in that jam, I didn’t do my part,” said Anderson, who loaded the bases by hitting Gabriel Arias with a pitch and walking two. “I just lost feel for my pitches and the zone in the second.” After Boston scored two runs in the third and twice in the sixth to pull within 5-4, Ramírez added an insurance run in the seventh by singling, stealing second, advancing on an error by McGuire, and scoring on a passed ball. “It’s just what José does, he makes stuff happen,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “Running the bases, hitting the ball, I like them both. He’s aggressive, he’s smart, he’s everything you could want in a ballplayer.” Hunter Gaddis (1-0) was awarded the win with 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, while Emmanuel Clase pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save. All-Star third baseman Devers served as the designated hitter for the second straight day. He missed the previous five games with a bone bruise in his left knee and is unlikely to play the field until Saturday in Boston. Guardians starter Triston McKenzie struck out a season-high seven in four innings, allowing two runs. Anderson gave up five runs and two homers in 1 2/3 innings. “We put up good at-bats against McKenzie, but we didn’t cash in,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “And at the end, (Clase) is really good.” TRAINER’S ROOM Red Sox: SS Romy González (left wrist sprain) is still experiencing stiffness in his wrist and “not progressing the way he wanted,” according to Cora. González has been sidelined since April 11. Guardians: RHP James Karinchak (right shoulder inflammation), who isn’t eligible to come off the 60-day injured list until May 27, will travel with the team on its six-game trip to Atlanta and Houston. UP NEXT Red Sox: RHP Kutter Crawford (1-0, 0.66 ERA) takes on Cubs LHP Shota Imanaga (3-0, 0.84 ERA) in the first game of a three-game set at Fenway Park. Guardians: LHP Logan Allen (3-0, 5.06 ERA) faces Braves LHP Chris Sale (2-1, 4.38 ERA) in the opener of a three-game interleague series in Atlanta. --- AP MLB: apnews.com/hub/mlb

Injuries & Moves: Devers will DH until Saturday 1:41 PM ADT
MLB.com LATEST NEWS
April 25: 3B Rafael Devers staying at DH until Saturday After making his return to the lineup after a five-game absence on Wednesday, Rafael Devers was projected to make his return to third base on Thursday. But the star slugger expressed reservations about returning to the field due to some lingering discomfort in his left knee, not to mention some rustiness from not playing third for over a week. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said it's more realistic to expect Devers to play at the hot corner on Saturday. That means that regular DH Masataka Yoshida, who hasn't started since Saturday, will remain idled for a couple more days.
April 25: RHP Nick Pivetta could return for Atlanta series Pivetta, who has been on the injured list since April 6 with a right elbow flexor strain, is scheduled to throw live batting practice at Fenway Park on Saturday. If that goes well, he could make a Minor League rehab start by May 2 and perhaps be back in Boston's rotation for the two-game series in Atlanta that takes place May 7-8.
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) Expected return: May After Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow, the Red Sox placed the righty on the injured list, retroactive to April 6. Pivetta threw his first bullpen session on April 20 at PNC Park, and he's slated to throw a live batting practice at Fenway Park on Saturday. The next step should be a Minor League rehab start. Pivetta could be positioned to rejoin the Red Sox during their series in Atlanta on May 7-8. (Last updated: April 25)
RHP Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain) Expected return: Mid May The Red Sox will huddle with Whitlock when they return to Boston on April 26 to map out a more specific time-table for his return to action. To this point, Whitlock has only thrown off flatground. The key step will be when he throws a bullpen session. The righty had a 1-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts before the injury. (Last updated: April 25)
RHP Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement) Expected return: TBD The reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 12 with a right shoulder impingement. He is starting to feel better and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the big righty was playing catch out to 90 feet as of April 24. (Last updated: April 25).
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) Expected return: TBD Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13, retroactive to April 11, with a sprained left wrist. An MRI taken on April 17 showed no structural damage. However, Gonzalez is not responding well.
"Romy is not progressing the way we wanted or he wanted," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “He just hasn’t been able to feel better. He’s stiff. It’s tough on him because he saw an opportunity to be here, but we’ve just got to be patient.” (Last updated: April 25)
RHP Brayan Bello (right lat strain) Expected return: Possibly May 7 Bello was placed on the injured list on April 24, retroactive to April 21. Red Sox manager Alex Cora thinks Bello can be ready as soon as the IL stint expires. That would put him in line to start on May 7 in Atlanta. The righty is 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in five starts.
1B Triston Casas (left rib fracture) Expected return: TBD Casas suffered a left rib fracture fouling off a 3-1 pitch on April 20, and is going to miss a significant portion of time. The Red Sox couldn't provide a timetable on how much time Casas will miss, because it depends on how swiftly the fracture heals. Casas had one of the best starts offensively for the Red Sox this season, hitting three doubles and six homers with a .857 OPS in 22 games. (Last updated: April 23)
