Logan Webb 'dialed in' as Giants begin road trip at Red Sox FLM
Right-hander Logan Webb will try to extend his career-best 19-inning scoreless streak Tuesday night when the visiting San Francisco Giants open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Webb (3-1, 2.33 ERA) tossed eight scoreless innings to help the Giants defeat the New York Mets 5-1 last Tuesday. It was his third victory in as many starts.
"I feel like me and (catcher Patrick Bailey) are really getting dialed in with the sequence and what we're trying to do," Webb said following his last start. "It's been fun working with him, and the defense has played unbelievable. ... Balls that should be hits are not hits because they're doing an incredible job out there. Overall, it's been fun to be a part of. It's been a good stretch. Hopefully, keep rolling."
Webb is 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA in two career appearances (both starts) against the Red Sox.
Boston will send righty Cooper Criswell (1-1, 2.38 ERA) to the mound Tuesday. He has seven strikeouts and two walks in 11 1/3 innings this season. Two of his three appearances have been starts.
Criswell has never pitched against San Francisco.
The Red Sox have won two in a row since they dropped the opening game of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Boston won the rubber game of that series 5-4 on Sunday night.
Chicago trailed 4-1 before Mike Tauchman hit a three-run homer against Chris Martin in the eighth inning, but Tyler O'Neill's bloop single drove in Jarren Duran with the game-winning run in the ninth.
Sunday's victory followed Boston's 17-0 win on Saturday.
"We played good baseball," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "Two bloops and a homer -- that's what happened in the eighth inning, but overall a good win. We put some good at-bats and we won a series."
Boston outfielder Masataka Yoshida left Sunday's game with a hand injury. Cora said following the game that he was unsure if the injury will force Yoshida to miss any time.
The Red Sox will be getting some reinforcements Tuesday, as first baseman Garrett Cooper and second baseman Vaughn Grissom are set to join the team for the series against San Francisco. Boston acquired Cooper from the Cubs over the weekend, while Grissom was called up from Triple-A Worcester.
The Giants wrapped up a 10-game homestand with a 6-4 record following Sunday's 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh. San Francisco's Thairo Estrada and Mike Yastrzemski hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning of that win.
Yastrzemski began the season 1-for-20, but hit .409 in 22 at-bats during the homestand. He had two home runs and eight RBIs in that span, and he raised his batting average from .121 to .236.
Keaton Winn held the Pirates to one run in six innings. The Giants' rotation has a 0.95 ERA over the past seven games, but San Francisco enters Tuesday's matchup with a 4.43 team ERA.
"We've been spotty," San Francisco manager Bob Melvin said. "I mean, you look at the stats across the board, whether it's pitching numbers or offensive numbers, it hasn't been great. But to sit here right at .500 or a game below (14-15), and we know there's a lot more in there -- it's not a horrible place to be."

Injuries & Moves: Pablo Reyes designated; Cooper added 1:07 PM ADT
MLB.com ;
7 seconds remaining LATEST NEWS
April 29: INF Pablo Reyes designated for assignment; 1B Garrett Cooper added to roster To make room for Cooper, who was acquired in a trade from the Cubs over the weekend, Reyes was designated for assignment.
In his last appearance for the club, Reyes went 1-for-2 against the Cubs on Saturday, and also tossed a scoreless frame in the Red Sox's 17-0 win. In 21 games this season, he batted .183 with two doubles and five RBIs.
Cooper is expected to be Boston's primary first baseman until Triston Casas (torn cartilage in left rib cage) returns from the 60-day injured list, which won't be until June 21 at the earliest. Cooper was designated for assignment by the Cubs earlier this week. In 12 games this season with Chicago, Cooper had a slash line of .270/.341/.432 with a homer and six RBIs. For his career, the 33-year-old is a .268 hitter with 57 homers and 228 RBIs in 493 games.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK The Red Sox pitched Tanner Houck on using his best stuff, and it’s resulted in an impressive start By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 29, 2024, 5:27 p.m.
Tanner Houck turned in another quality outing for the Red Sox in Sunday night’s 5-4 win, yielding just a run over 6⅔ innings, striking out nine.
Perhaps the Red Sox have discovered something in Houck, and that might be because the righthander has found his arsenal.
In 21 starts last season, Houck tossed his four-seam fastball 173 times. Through six starts this year, Houck has thrown that pitch just once. Clearly, it’s by design.
The Sox, under new pitching coach Andrew Bailey, have made it a focus for pitchers to pound the zone with their best stuff. And Houck, a starter who lacked command, is now a strike machine, posting a 3.2 percent walk rate — which ranks sixth in MLB — compared to 8.9 percent last year.
Ditching the four-seamer, a pitch that Houck had a tendency to overthrow, and leaning on his slider and sinker, followed by his splitter and cutter, has paid off. Not so much velocity.
“I was watching an interview with [Dodgers starter Tyler] Glasnow, and he was talking about the opposite end,” said Houck. “He throws everything as hard as possible. But he also throws 100 miles per hour. I mean, everyone wishes that they could throw an easy 100. But it works for him.
“I’m not built that way. I know that if I’m throwing 91-93, I have good movement on my ball and I can execute the pitch.”
Houck always made for a tough at-bat, but lacked consistency over an entire outing. Now, he and the Sox have a grip on what makes his stuff so special: allowing the natural movement on his pitches to play.
“I had to check myself,” said Houck. “I had to look in the mirror and realize I don’t have to throw [hard] all the time.”
Reyes gets designated
The Red Sox officially added first baseman Garrett Cooper to their active roster, and to make room, they designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment.
The Sox initially acquired Reyes from the Athletics last May for cash. He played a solid backup role in 2023, batting .287 in 64 games while flashing the ability to move around the infield.
But Reyes failed to make much noise this year, batting just .183 in 21 games. He became somewhat of a liability defensively, too, committing four errors.
The Sox will likely reinstate Vaughn Grissom from the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Giants, another righthanded bat to go along with Cooper. That’s a plus for a team that has been lefty-dominant much of this season.
Criswell, Crawford, and Winckowski will start
The Red Sox’ rotation will stay on schedule for the series with the Giants. Cooper Criswell will take the ball in the opener, followed by Kutter Crawford and Josh Winckowski … Heading into Monday, Sox pitchers led the majors with a team ERA of 2.68 (78 earned runs in 262⅔ innings), while their starters led baseball with a 2.07 ERA (34 earned runs across 147⅔ innings) … Logan Webb will take the hill Tuesday against the Sox. He took the loss when the teams matched up last year in a 3-2 Sox victory at Oracle Park. Webb yielded three runs across 7⅓ innings and struck out four. The Red Sox, however, lost the next two to San Francisco to drop the series. Wednesday’s starter for the Giants is to be determined, followed by Kyle Harrison Thursday … The Giants have gotten off to a slow start under new manager Bob Melvin with a 14-15 record. Despite being under .500, they are second in an underwhelming National League West. The Giants are 5-8 on the road while the Red Sox are 5-8 at home … Manager Alex Cora secured his 456th career victory for the Sox Sunday, passing Jimmy Collins to claim the fifth spot on the franchise’s all-time list … With the Giants coming in, this would be the first time Nick Ahmed, an East Longmeadow native, will play at Fenway Park … Mike Yastrzemski last played at Fenway in 2019. The grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski was 4 for 13 with a double, homer and two RBIs in that series. The former St. John’s Prep star is 5 for 17 against the Sox in six games.

BOSTON — Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida saw a hand specialist and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday, manager Alex Cora said.
Yoshida jammed his hand during an at-bat Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. He was lifted in the sixth inning for pinch-hitter Rob Refsnyder.
Cora wouldn’t say whether Yoshida could land on the IL.
“We’ll see where we’re at,” Cora said.
The 30-year-old has made all 20 of his starts this season at DH. He has played just one inning in left field after logging 84 starts in left last year.
He is batting .275 with a .348 on-base percentage, .388 slugging percentage, .736 OPS, two home runs, three doubles, 12 runs, 11 RBIs, six walks and 11 strikeouts in 24 games (89 plate appearances).
Tyler O’Neill will serve as the DH on Tuesday when the Red Sox open a three-game series against the Giants at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Trade addition Garrett Cooper will make his Red Sox debut. He’s at first base and batting seventh.

Alex Cora explains why Red Sox cut bait with IF who became Twitter cult hero
Published: Apr. 30, 2024, 5:04 p.m.

Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON — The Red Sox made a somewhat surprising roster move Monday by designating utility infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment to clear a roster spot for trade addition Garrett Cooper. On Tuesday, manager Alex Cora pointed to Reyes’ defense as a reason why the move was made.
Reyes, who played 21 games (14 starts) for the Red Sox at all four infield positions, ranked in the second percentile in range/outs above average at -4, according to Statcast. He made four errors in 78 ⅓ innings filling in for Rafael Devers at third base while also seeing 39 innings at second base and about a dozen each at first base and shortstop. Mixed with a .183 average and .451 OPS in 64 plate appearances, the downturn was enough to cut bait.
“He did a good job last year,” Cora said. “This year, he never got on track, especially defensively. He made some errors and all that but offensively, you can see his swing and he controls the strike zone. He didn’t get hits but the at-bats were good. Defensively was the one where we were not disappointed, because they’re going to make errors, but he never got on track.
“He never took off this year. Let’s put it that way. But he’s still a good player. I won’t be surprised if somebody claims him or does something with him because he’s versatile. He can hit lefties.”
Reyes joined the Red Sox in a minor trade with the Athletics last May and was surprisingly productive for the Red Sox throughout the rest of the season, hitting .287 with a .716 OPS and some big hits in clutch situations in August. He became something of a cult hero among Red Sox fans on Twitter/X after hitting a walk-off grand slam to beat the Royals on Aug. 7.
Reyes entered the season as a top infield bench option with the ability to play multiple positions and got chances to play with Devers, shortstop Trevor Story, second baseman Vaughn Grissom and first baseman Triston Casas dealing with injuries at various points. With Grissom close to being activated off the injured list (the flu has set him back a bit, Cora said) this week and Cooper coming over in a trade with the Cubs, two infielders needed to be lopped off the Red Sox roster. Boston decided to move on from Reyes instead of one of their young middle infielders (David Hamilton or Enmanuel Valdez) or first baseman Bobby Dalbec.
Another move will be due when Grissom is activated. Unlike Reyes, who was out of minor league options, the other three infielders (Dalbec, Hamilton and Valdez) can be sent to Triple-A Worcester freely without the risk of losing them via waivers.
“Where we’re at roster-wise, it’s going to get tougher and there’s going to be tougher decisions in the upcoming days, in a month,” Cora said. “That’s good. That’s where we’re at as an organization.
“We’ve got good players, man. It’s getting to that point where you have to make decisions. We’ve got Coop. We’re thinking about Vaughn. Romy is on the IL. Bobby’s here. Valdy, Hammy. You’ve got to manage the game, too.”

Mac Cerullo @maccerullo Vaughn Grissom is under the weather so he won't be activated tonight. Alex Cora wasn't sure how his 20-day rehab clock expiring tomorrow would affect his timetable, so right now a bit of a wait-and-see situation.
Nick Pivetta is expected to make a rehab start on Thursday. Barring any setbacks the expectation is he'll be ready to return afterwards.

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo Vaughn Grissom's battle with the flu comes at a weird time. His 20-day rehab window ends tomorrow in Worcester. So Red Sox have to make a decision on him by the end of the day Wednesday.
This is how it works: Because illness is viewed the same as an injury setback in the middle of a rehab assignment, the Red Sox would have to either activate Grissom or return/pull him off his rehab assignment by the end of the day Wednesday.
If they pull him off the rehab assignment, they can still activate him whenever. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, whenever.
But if they do pull him off rehab, he can't play another rehab game in the minors/with WooSox until Sunday.
