Red Sox’ Jarren Duran on pace for ‘one hell of a stat,’ would be record

BALTIMORE — Jarren Duran leads the major leagues with eight triples and he’s on pace for 24. That would set a Red Sox single-season record.
“That would be one hell of a stat,” Duran said. “I mean, it’s really hard. But so far, so good. So I guess we’ll just see how it turns out. But that would honestly be a great accomplishment if I could do that.”
Hall of Fame center fielder Tris Speaker holds the Red Sox’ single-season record for triples with 22 in 1913. Duran is the first Red Sox player with eight triples in a season since Mookie Betts had eight in 2015.
Duran needs only two more triples to become just the fourth Red Sox player this century with 10 or more triples in a season. He’d join Nomar Garciaparra (13 triples in 2003), Johnny Damon (11 triples in 2002) and Jacoby Ellsbury (10 triples in 2009).
“It’s always fun to possibly have the chance to get an inside the parker when I’m running out the triple,” Duran said. “But also at the same time, it gives somebody else an opportunity to get an RBI so that’s always a fun thing, too. But I think running around the bases is always fun.”
Levi Weaver and Ken Rosenthal recently noted in The Athletic, “In the divisional era (1969-present), there have only been six seasons of 20+ triples. The last two came in the same season, when Jimmy Rollins had 20 for the Phillies and Curtis Granderson hit a divisional-era record 23 for the Tigers.”
For Duran, the most exciting offensive play in baseball is not the triple. It’s an inside-the-park homer. It took him just 15 seconds to score on an inside-the-park homer in a sim game for Triple-A Pawtucket at the alternate site in 2020.
“I’m always thinking inside the parker until Huddy (third base coach Kyle Hudson) stops me,” Duran said. “He usually stops me pretty soon.”
Duran came close to an inside-the-park home run in July 2021. He rounded all the bases vs. the Blue Jays but it was ruled a triple and that he took home on an error by the center fielder.
“One against Toronto that was a triple with an error,” Duran said. “Even though it kicked off a steel gate and they gave him an error for that.”

Orioles hope to keep bats booming in rematch with Red Sox FLM
When their offense is in a groove, the Baltimore Orioles like their chances against any opponent.
The Orioles scored 11 runs, matching their second-highest total of the season, in beating the visiting Boston Red Sox on Monday. The second game of the series is set for Tuesday night.
"We know we have a good offense and what we're capable of," Baltimore first baseman/designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn said. "We also know we can put up runs fast."
Catcher Adley Rutschman has driven in nine runs during the Orioles' five-game winning streak, their longest of the season.
Baltimore bulked up for 13 hits, including six doubles and a triple, in Monday's 11-3 victory.
"It's like fastbreak offense," Boston manager Alex Cora said of the Orioles. "They get (to) swinging well and hitting the ball hard."
The Red Sox amassed eight hits and seven walks, typically a good formula to score runs, but they went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners.
"We've just got to keep moving the line," Cora said. "We did some good things. We didn't cash in, of course. If we can stay patient and swing at the right ones, good things are going to happen."
Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (5-1, 3.20 ERA), who has been strong this month in two starts, goes to the mound for the Orioles on Tuesday. Since returning from a stint on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation, he has worked 11 innings, giving up two runs and four hits while striking out 14. He walked eight in that span, as well, however.
The availability of starters tends to be an evolving process for the Orioles.
"It's going to be constant to see who stays healthy," manager Brandon Hyde said. "There's going to be hiccups along the way."
Rodriguez faced the Red Sox earlier this season, getting a no-decision in Boston on April 11 when he worked 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on six hits in the Orioles' eventual 10-inning win.
His only other assignment against the Red Sox also came in Boston in 2023. He was tagged with a loss while giving up four runs (two earned) in 4 1/3 innings on Sept. 10.
Right-hander Brayan Bello (5-2, 4.04) is the scheduled starter for the Red Sox, who have won six of his eight starts this season. Five of his outings have come on the road, and the only game among them that Boston lost came May 17 in St. Louis.
Bello took a loss on April 9 against the visiting Orioles. He gave up three runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings. That left him at 1-2 with a 4.02 ERA in three career starts vs. Baltimore, losing a 2022 matchup and winning last year. In 15 2/3 total innings against the Orioles, he has never surrendered a home run.
Boston has lost three of its last four games, however.
"We turn the page and get ready for the next one," Cora said.

Red Sox get a reality check from the Orioles By Rob Bradford WEEI 93.7
BALTIMORE - During his weekly appearance recently on the 'Jones and Mego Show' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said in passing that he believed the Orioles were the best team in the American League East.
Considering the Yankees came into Monday with a two-game lead over Baltimore and a run-differential significantly better than the O's (Plus-92 to plus-61) it seemed like a "you must know something we don't" kind of proclamation.
Judging by the display put on by the Orioles in their series opener against Cora's club, the Sox skipper might have been on to something.
The Orioles dominated the Red Sox in every form and fashion Monday at Camden Yards, coming away with a 11-3 win over Cora's club.
It was the Red Sox' fourth loss in as many tries against the Orioles this season, having now been outscored 34-113. They are also 4-10 vs. Baltimore dating back to April 24, 2023. The Sox are also now just 10-19 against teams with records of better than .500.
“We've had a lot of injuries, guys have really fought to be .500 (27-27)," said Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder. "The Baltimore Orioles have been so good. (Cole) Irvin did a really good job today keeping us off balance. When we got guys on base, we did a really good job of getting out of those spots. But yeah, right at .500, third in the division, right there in the Wild Card."
He added, "Obviously, I think all of us can agree that we'd like to be playing better offensively. You know, we just need to get some breaks and just keep having better at bats, honestly. With runners in scoring position, we need to do a better job of capitalizing on that, we all know that. We’re working behind the scenes and trying to get better at it and I think a breakthrough is coming, honestly. So just keep going. I doubt a lot of people would think we would be .500 with this many injuries, especially some of our key players like Tristan and Trevor (Story) and Lucas (Giolito) in Spring Training. But the young guys are figuring it out. I like where we’re at, honestly. I feel like we’ve got some good baseball ahead of us."
The loss also marked the third time in their last four games the starting pitcher has surrendered at least five runs. This time it was due to Cooper Criswell's worst outing as a starter, with the righty allowing seven runs (6 earned) over four innings.
"As a competitor I think you want to face the best teams in the division," Criswell said. "Obviously it didn’t go the way we wanted it to but any time you play the best teams, you need to bring your best stuff.”
Newcomer Brad Keller went the rest of the way after Criswell's exit, giving up four runs in his four innings.
The only Red Sox runs came after they had fallen into an 11-run deficit, with Romy Gonzalez notching a bases-clearing, bases-loaded triple.
As for the Orioles - who are now 8-2 against American League East clubs - they have won five straight while getting to roll out their top two starters (Grayson Rodriguez, Corbin Burnes) for the series' final two games.
"We have to continue to pitch. We have to be better defensively. I think the other aspects of the game are going to be fine," said Cora when talking about the Red Sox making it through the first third of the season. "Obviously, we’re missing three big bats in the lineup. But the guys who are playing are doing an outstanding job. Romy had a good game today. Ref did the same thing. Dom had good at-bats. We feel good where we’re at. Obviously, it’s not enough, but I feel really good with the group and what we have been able to do in this first part."

Likely in the batting cage striking out
Mac Cerullo @maccerullo Still no Tyler O'Neill for the Red Sox today. Alex Cora had said today was a possibility but by the looks of it he's not quite ready.

It would be really nice to take the next two games of the series. It may be asking a lot, but we surprisingly swept the Rays at Tropicana, so anything is possible.

Not shocked a damn bit
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne Tyler ONeill sent back to Boston, where he will get imaging on his right knee tomorrow. Alex Cora said it is more for reassurance than the team fearing anything is significantly wrong. 5:34 PM · May 28, 2024 · 17.3K Views
