Abreu, Refsnyder hit HRs, Bernardino solid in relief as Red Sox halt Orioles' 5-game win streak AP
BALTIMORE (AP) Brennan Bernardino worked out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-3 Tuesday night.
Wilyer Abreu and Rob Refsnyder homered and Brayan Bello won for the fifth time in six starts for Boston, which beat the Orioles for the first time in five meetings this season.
Grayson Rodriguez struck out a career-high 10 for Baltimore, which had a season-best five-game winning streak halted.
Bernardino entered with a 4-3 lead and two on in relief of Bello (6-2) and promptly walked pinch hitter Ryan Mountcastle, loading the bases. But the left-hander struck out pinch-hitter Austin Hayes, induced a weak grounder from Jorge Mateo back to the mound for a force out and struck out Gunnar Henderson on three pitches to end the threat.
“That’s literally what my job is, I feel like, is to come into situations and help my starter or whatever pitcher pitches before me,” Bernardino said. “It felt great to do that.”
Bernardino struck out two more in a 1-2-3 seventh.
“He’s really good against lefties and righties,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “Obviously, there’s certain matchups we try to avoid. But today, he was amazing. We knew they were going to use their righties, but his stuff plays, regardless.”
Rafael Devers tripled to lead off the eighth and scored on Connor Wong’s single to make it 5-3. Boston added three runs in the ninth on pinch-hitter Romy Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly and Refsnyder’s two-run homer.
Rodriguez (5-2) gave up four runs in six innings, setting down 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. But he gave up Abreu’s one-out homer and Devers’ RBI single in the first to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.
Boston added two more runs in the second when Jarren Duran hit an RBI double with one out and scored on a Devers' bloop single three batters later.
“Any time you give up four runs, you’re pretty disappointed about that,” Rodriguez said. “I was glad I was able to go six innings, but I should have done a better job of keeping my team in the game.”
The Orioles scored all three of their runs in the first. Colton Cowser had an RBI infield single, and Jordan Westburg poked a two-run, opposite-field single to right two batters later.
Bello allowed three runs and five hits while striking out seven.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Red Sox: OF Tyler O’Neill traveled to Boston for imaging on his sore right knee. He has not played since Saturday.
Orioles: Manager Brandon Hyde said RHP Dean Kremer (triceps) is experiencing less soreness since going on the injured list Friday and should begin playing catch soon.
UP NEXT
Baltimore RHP Corbin Burnes (4-2, 2.60 ERA) faces Boston RHP Kutter Crawford (2-3, 2.89 ERA) as the three-game series concludes Wednesday.

Bernardino serves as unsung hero in Red Sox's win over Orioles 12:22 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BALTIMORE -- For the first 12 days of the season, lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino was at Triple-A Worcester and was not particularly happy about it. A key member of Boston's bullpen last season, Bernardino wasn’t much in the mood to hear about roster flexibility.
But instead of sulking, Bernardino used the obligatory chip on his shoulder as a motivational tool. Perhaps Bernardino had nights like Tuesday in mind, when he would come on in a key spot against one of the best teams in the Major Leagues and get his team out of a big jam.
Backed by Bernardino getting himself and teammate Brayan Bello out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out predicament in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox escaped with an 8-3 victory at Camden Yards.
Nobody loved it more than Bello, who shouted and clapped from the dugout when Bernardino blew a 92.4-mph sinker by Gunnar Henderson to cap the inning.
“It was a magnificent job, what he was able to do,” said Bello. “I had to give him his hug and his kiss for the incredible job he did.”
Bernardino (0.78 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in 20 appearances this season) appreciated the love, but he chalked up his fine performance as what he expects himself to do.
“It feels good. That’s literally what my job is -- to come into situations and help my starter,” Bernardino said. “It felt great to do that.”
It was Boston’s first win in five tries against the Orioles this season, and it came a day after manager Alex Cora’s squad endured an 11-3 thumping on Memorial Day.
While Bernardino is Boston’s unsung hero, the same cannot be said for Rafael Devers. The Red Sox's star slugger also had a big night, going 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs.
The triple didn’t look like one off the bat, particularly for Devers, who isn’t known for his speed. But Devers saw an opening when his 107.6-mph rocket to the opposite field took a nice ricochet off the angled portion of the left-field wall, and he motored the 270 feet for his eighth career triple.
“When your best player runs the bases the way he did today, that tells you the whole story,” said Cora.
Then there was Bello, who gave the Red Sox a third storyline from an eventful win. The righty had been sick the last few days, and Cora wasn’t sure he’d be able to take the ball.
Take the ball he did. Bello (6-2) gave up three runs in the first but then nothing over his final four frames. He gave way to Bernardino with two on and none out in the sixth. Even after Bernardino walked Ryan Mountcastle, the first batter he faced, it was no time to panic.
“Back home I was feeling a little sick, but that wasn't going to stop me from giving 100 percent today,” said Bello. “I think in that first inning, my body wasn't really all the way warmed up yet. But after we got past that, I was able to do what I do.”
Finally, the Orioles regained some momentum against Bello to start the sixth, as Anthony Santander led off with a single and Jordan Westburg was hit by a pitch.
Then, it was time for Bernardino, who turned it into a high-wire act by opening his outing by walking Mountcastle.
Bases loaded, nobody out? No problem. Bernardino struck out Austin Hays and then got a tapper back to the mound from Jorge Mateo before the punchout of the dangerous Henderson.
“Ever since you're a kid, those are kind of the situations you draw up in the backyard,” said Bernardino. “So it's fun actually getting to do them on this big of a stage.”
Opponents are 0-for-27 in the past 33 plate appearances with runners in scoring position against Bernardino. Since the start of the 2023 season, he has stranded 35 of 40 inherited runners.
Not done with his heroics in the sixth, Bernardino came back out and fired a 1-2-3 seventh that included two strikeouts, to finish with four K's in his two frames.
For Bernardino, Tuesday was a far cry from March 26, when Cora told him he’d be starting the season at Triple-A. For someone who was taken in the 26th round of the 2014 Draft and spent parts of three seasons in the Mexican League, Bernardino has come to expect a challenging path.
“It was tough not making the Opening Day roster,” Bernardino said. “But even if I did make the Opening Day roster, I’m always kind of playing with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder being a late-round Draft pick guy and the journey I've taken. I'm just happy to be here right now.”

”Rafael Devers’ Red Sox teammate knows slugger won’t ‘shut up’ about triple

BALTIMORE — Rafael Devers’ triple in Boston’s 8-3 victory over the Orioles on Tuesday marked his first in more than two years.
His last tripled May 18, 2022 at Fenway Park against the Astros.
“When he hit the triple, I was like, ‘Oh, man. He’s not going to shut up in the clubhouse because he’s going to say he’s faster than (Jarren) Duran,’” starting pitcher Brayan Bello said through translator Daveson Pérez. “But no, good for him.”
Devers connected on Cionel Pérez’s 95.8 mph sinker and ripped it down the left field line with a 107.6 mph exit velocity to lead off the eighth inning. It looked like it would be a double but the ball slowed after ricocheting off the wall. Devers read it perfectly and hustled for the extra base.
“I had the play right in front of me,” Devers said through Pérez. “I could see it happening. And I knew it was a tough play so I just took advantage.”
Devers’ hustle triple led to an important insurance run. Connor Wong, the next hitter, drove home Devers with a single to right field, making it 5-3 Boston.
“When your best player runs the bases the way he did today, that tells you the whole story,” manager Alex Cora said. “He hits that ball down the line and he didn’t hesitate. Overall, awesome. Good energy. I haven’t seen so many fans chanting for us in a while here. So we’ll take it but we’ve got a job to do tomorrow. Come here and try to win the series.”
Devers went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and one run. He’s batting .295 (28-for-95) with a .358 on-base percentage, .611 slugging percentage, .969 OPS, seven homers, seven doubles, one triple, 19 RBIs, 18 runs, nine walks and 30 strikeouts in 25 games during May.
“I got some hits today. I love getting those hits. I love getting the extra-base hits as well,” he said. “Hitting line drives and hitting it hard. So yeah, it’s a step in the right direction.”

Here’s the deal with Red Sox rookie Wilyer Abreu: ‘He’s a good player.’ By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated May 28, 2024, 11:17 p.m.
BALTIMORE — Red Sox assistant hitting coach Ben Rosenthal remembers vividly what it was like to watch Wilyer Abreu as a teenager.
During a pair of fall instructional leagues when both Rosenthal (as a coach) and Abreu (as a player) were in the Astros farm system following the 2017 and 2018 seasons, the outfielder was skinny with virtually no power, but still showed a knack for finding the barrel and drilling line drives.
“I was like, ‘That can play,’ ” said Rosenthal. “The swing was always there.”
So, too, was a good understanding of the strike zone and the kind of pitches he should attack. But at the time, Abreu lacked bat speed and with it, power. In his first three professional seasons from 2017-19, he hit a total of two homers. For him to emerge as a valuable big leaguer, that was going to have to change.
“You have to hit it hard enough to have a seat at the table,” said Rosenthal.
Fast forward five years — and plenty of time working on strength and conditioning as well as nutrition — to 2024. The once skinny kid is now a barrel-chested 24-year-old who, at 5 feet, 10 inches and 215 pounds, generates the sort of bat speed possessed by power hitters. According to Baseball Savant, Abreu’s average bat speed on swings is 74.8 miles per hour — just behind sluggers Bobby Witt Jr., Austin Riley, Tyler O’Neill, and Carlos Correa, and just in front of Pete Alonso, William Contreras, and Fernando Tatís Jr.
That trait, combined with a good understanding of the strike zone and the pitches he can drive, has helped Abreu emerge as one of the most impactful rookies in the game in 2024 — a notion that received more evidence in an 8-3 Red Sox win over the Orioles on Tuesday.
In the first inning, Abreu scooped a Grayson Rodriguez changeup at the bottom of the strike zone, getting the barrel to the ball and driving it over the right-field scoreboard in Camden Yards for his sixth homer of the year.
The shot by the two-hole hitter immediately helped catalyze the offense.
“We needed that,” said Sox manager Alex Cora, noting that the Sox had been deflated by an 11-3 loss Monday. “Right away, you can feel it in the dugout — here we go.”
Abreu has made that kind of impact with uncommon frequency for a rookie. He’s at the top of the charts in virtually all offensive categories among qualifying rookies, including average (.283), OBP (.357), slugging (.513), and extra-base hits. Abreu combines his aggressive, fast swings with an ability to focus on pitches in the strike zone.
He’s swung at roughly 30 percent of pitches out of the zone, slightly under the league average chase rate of 31 percent, while turning loose on 73 percent of the pitches in the strike zone — above the league rate of 69 percent.
“My whole philosophy is to stay in the zone and to swing at pitches only that I can do damage with,” Abreu said through a translator. “Even though [the homer] wasn’t the greatest contact because I was out in front, that’s what I’m looking to do — hit those pitches that are in the zone.”
It’s a combination that has quickly put him in a position of considerable responsibility. While Abreu was squeezed out of the outfield mix in the initial weeks of the season, he’s now not only forged a near-everyday role but has occupied the No. 2 slot in the order for most of the past three weeks.
“He’s a guy that dominates the strike zone,” said Cora, who also repeatedly praised Abreu’s defense and baserunning. “When you do that, and you have a swing like his — it’s very similar to [those of a lot of standout Astros players], it’s close to the body, short to [the ball] and fast — you’re going to be successful.”
For Abreu, such accolades underscore how far he has come, and the extent to which he has defied expectations across a professional career that has featured a wealth of speed bumps and where progress has not always been direct. He was never a top-100 prospect, and wasn’t considered a top prospect in either the Astros or Red Sox systems until after he’d made his big league debut last year.
Abreu didn’t view such oversights as slights — but he did remain confident in his abilities, and now takes satisfaction in his emergence as a young player upon whom the Sox are now relying heavily.
“I’ve never really cared about where they rank me. I just know that at the end of the day, I have to go out there and do the job. And I know I’m going to give my best regardless,” said Abreu. “It feels great to have that trust that [Cora] has in me. I’m just trying to go out there and have as much fun as possible, make the most out of the opportunity and just do my best.”
He’s doing that with sufficient frequency that Cora is repeating a refrain about Abreu so often that it’s become almost a punchline.
“I will keep saying it the whole time,” Cora chuckled after the game. “He’s a good player.”
The Sox will not mind if their manager has reason to keep repeating the claim.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill returns to Boston for tests on sore right knee By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated May 29, 2024, 12:03 a.m.
BALTIMORE — Tyler O’Neill left the Red Sox and will undergo imaging of his sore right knee Wednesday in Boston, manager Alex Cora said Tuesday at Camden Yards prior to the team’s 8-3 win over the Orioles.
“We feel like he should be fine,” Cora said. “But we want to make sure. [The medical team] feels like he’s not making strides and he’s not feeling better. But they feel like he should be OK. Nothing too serious and we’ll go from there.”
The outfielder was taken out of Saturday’s game at Fenway Park against the Brewers after seven innings and has missed the last three games. He would have been out of the lineup again Wednesday, so the Sox decided to be aggressive and get the imaging done as soon as possible rather than wait until they return home Thursday.
O’Neill has a history of injuries, particularly during his last two seasons with the Cardinals, playing in a combined 168 games between 2022 and ’23. He has struggled offensively since returning from a concussion that forced him on the seven-day injured list, batting just .200 with 45 strikeouts in 100 at-bats.
Vaughn Grissom believes he’s about to take off at the plate.
Undoubtedly, that Grissom is finally beginning to get his legs under him after missing the entire spring with a groin/hamstring injury helps. Unquestionably, gaining weight back following a stomach bug which caused him to lose 14 pounds also brings Grissom optimism.
But beyond those two pertinent developments is an offensive adjustment that Grissom strongly believes will bring him more success.
“I’m standing off the plate a little bit and I feel like that has helped me a ton,” he said.
Grissom decided in the offseason to stand closer to the plate. The infielder loves the ball inside and figured that by being more on top of the dish, pitchers would challenge him in more, and, in turn, he could hunt that part of the plate. The plan backfired.
He explained that his plate discipline got lost in the process.
“I was getting jammed up a bunch and balls was getting on me,” Grissom said. “What I thought was going to help me was hurting me the most. So there’s something I kind of had to figure out because when I got on the plate I was chasing in. I was getting blown up on those pitches when the inside pitch was usually, I felt, my best strength. If I could get to that one inside, , the ones away would be easy.” Related: Kenley Jansen remains focused on the task at hand — saving games for the Red Sox — despite trade rumors
A couple of weeks ago, veteran Garrett Cooper relayed to Grissom that he has a tall, lanky frame and probably needed to give himself some room at the plate. So, Grissom decided to give himself a bit more room, and slowly, his plate discipline has returned. He is beginning to see more results, collecting a hit in each of two games prior to Tuesday’s contest, in which he went 0 for 4. He also walked twice in Monday’s series opener vs. the Orioles.
“There were a lot of things that went into it,” Grissom said. “But giving myself some space was tremendous. If it’s too far in, you’re not going to put a barrel on it even with a perfect swing. You would have to be real early which is tough to do in this game. So, I’m trying to do what I can with that and put a barrel on the ball.”
The Sox acquired Grissom from the Braves in the offseason, in part, because of his elite bat-to-ball skills. Perhaps now he can flash that tool a bit more.
“This kid is going to hit,” added Cora. “He’s hit everywhere he’s played.” Bernardino stays sharp
Brennan Bernardino was unhappy with the Red Sox’ decision to option him to Triple A Worcester to start the season, essentially choosing fellow lefthanded reliever Joely Rodriguez over him.
Cora described it as a tough conversation to have, but Bernardino left his manager with a lasting impression.
“He mentioned two things,” Cora said Tuesday night. “He said he has heart, and, well, a pair.”
Cora’s grin suggested that the second item might not be found in a spreadsheet either.
Bernardino was a huge part of the Sox’ win over the Orioles, working two high-leverage innings, the sixth and seventh, in scoreless fashion while also compiling four strikeouts. He has pitched to the tune of two earned runs in 23 innings (0.78 ERA) this season.
“Even if I didn’t make the Opening Day roster, I always pitch with a chip on my shoulder because I was a late draft pick,” he said. “It’s kind of the journey I’ve taken. I’m happy to be here right now.”
Rodriguez was designated for assignment on April 28.

Orioles to start ace Corbin Burnes in rubber game vs. Red Sox FLM
There was an oddity, in Boston manager Alex Cora's opinion, that he would like to see repeated when the Red Sox finish their three-game series with the host Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday evening.
The Red Sox evened the set by winning 8-3 on Tuesday night.
"Good energy," Cora said. "I haven't seen so many fans chanting for us in a while here."
The Orioles would prefer that their fans have the most to cheer about. Baltimore is 18-11 in home games this year.
But the Red Sox have been stronger away from home than at Fenway Park, going 17-12 in road games and 11-15 at home.
"We came out swinging the bat well," Cora said.
Each of the first five batters in Boston's lineup had at least one RBI on Tuesday. Rafael Devers delivered four hits, and Cora generally liked the aggressive approach the Red Sox displayed.
"We used the whole personnel," Boston's manager said.
The Orioles, who stranded 10 runners, will try to bounce back after their five-game winning streak ended Tuesday.
Baltimore hadn't given up as many as eight runs in a game since a 9-4 loss April 19 at Kansas City. That stretch included four games that went to at least the 10th inning.
On the flip side, it has been hot and cold for Boston's batters. The Red Sox have reached at least the eight-run level three times in their last nine games.
Right-hander Corbin Burnes (4-2, 2.60 ERA) will be on the mound for the Orioles on Wednesday. The Baltimore ace has lasted at least six innings in all five May starts and in six consecutive appearances overall.
He tamed the Red Sox across a season-high seven innings April 9, holding host Boston to one run on two hits for the victory. He has had only one other career matchup vs. Boston, giving up three runs (two earned) in five innings while with the Milwaukee Brewers on April 23 of last season.
Boston has right-hander Kutter Crawford (2-3, 2.89 ERA) lined up as its starting pitcher Wednesday. He's 0-2 across his last four starts, with the Red Sox losing each of those games.
His most recent outing lasted a season-low 4 1/3 innings Friday against the Brewers, who dinged him for six runs on seven hits.
One of his finest starts came with five shutout innings April 10 against the Orioles, who won 7-5. A glitch that day was a season-high four walks issued by Crawford.
Overall, he is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four meetings with Baltimore.
The Orioles had scoring chances come up empty in Tuesday night's game. They loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and didn't score. They stranded two runners in the ninth.
"Unfortunately, we just didn't get the job done on that end," outfielder Anthony Santander said. "We're always focused on the game, and we never really give up until the final out."
The Orioles have concerns about infielder Jordan Westburg, who was hit on the right hand/wrist by a sixth-inning pitch. The third baseman finished the game, but manager Brandon Hyde said he'll be closely evaluated.
"A tender spot," Hyde said. "We're getting him checked out hoping he's OK. Tough kid."
