Philadelphia Phillies vs. Boston Red Sox
Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 7:40pm EDT Written by Mark Ruelle
The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox kick off a three-game interleague series on Tuesday night in Boston. The Phillies have been dominant thus far on the season and come into this series with the best record in baseball and comfortably atop the NL East Division. The Red Sox have been a picture of mediocrity this season, sitting at 33-33 heading into this series. The pitching matchup in game one will feature Phillies' ace righty Zack Wheeler (7-3, 2.23) taking on Red Sox righty Kutter Crawford (2-5, 3.51). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
Back in the States The Philadelphia Phillies return to the United States after a weekend set in London against the New York Mets. The Phillies' four-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday in London with a 6-5 loss to the Mets. The Phillies had leads of 3-0 and 4-3 in the game but closer Jose Alvarado allowed two hits and three runs in the top of the 9th to take the loss. The Phillies were forced to settle for a split in the London Series but still head home with an overall record of 45-20.
The Phillies will hand the ball to their ace, Zack Wheeler, in the series opener at Fenway Park. Wheeler is 7-3 in 13 games this season including 10 quality starts. He has an ERA of 2.23 and a WHIP of 0.95 while allowing six home runs thus far. Wheeler has given up 51 hits in 80.2 innings pitched while striking out 91 batters and walking 26. In his last start, Wheeler picked up the win in a 3-1 victory over the Brewers in Philadelphia. He allowed five hits in seven innings of work and just one run while striking out six.
Key Injuries:SP Griff McGarry, 3B Matt Kroon, and RP Luis Ortiz are out.
Salvaged a Split The Boston Red Sox were able to avoid an ignominious sweep at the hands of the lowly Chicago White Sox on Sunday by coming back from an early deficit to steal a 6-4 win in 10 innings. Shortstop David Hamilton homered and doubled to lead the Red Sox to victory in what was a bullpen game for the BoSox. Boston won the opener 14-2 to extend the White Sox losing streak to 14 games before dropping each of the next two games before Sunday's comeback win. Closer Kenley Jansen picked up the win after pitching two innings and striking out five. The Red Sox emptied the bullpen on Sunday with Monday being a day off.
The Red Sox will hand the ball to righty Kutter Crawford on Tuesday night. Manager Alex Cora gave Crawford an extra day of rest on Sunday and used a bullpen game in order to give the scuffling righty more time between starts. On the season, Crawford is 2-5 in 13 starts including five quality starts. He has allowed 64 hits in 74.1 innings with an ERA of 3.51 and a WHIP of 1.18 including six home runs allowed. Crawford has struck out 71 and walked 24 this season. In his last start, Crawford allowed four earned runs on five hits in six innings to take the loss in an 8-3 defeat to the Braves in Boston.
Key Injuries: 1B Tristan Casas, 2B Vaughn Grissom, LF Masataka Yoshida are out. RF Tyler O'Neil and 3B Rafael Devers are day-to-day.

Injuries & Moves: Latest on Devers, O'Neill, Yoshida, Casas June 9th, 2024
MLB.com LATEST NEWS
June 9: 3B Rafael Devers (left knee) not in starting lineup after early exit on Saturday Reese McGuire pinch-hit for Devers in the eighth inning of Saturday's eventual 6-1 loss to the Red Sox. According to manager Alex Cora, Devers' left knee, which he pushes off of while hitting, was bothering him when he was loading (or getting ready to swing) in the batter's box.
Cora said on Saturday he likely would give Devers the day off on Sunday, leading up to Monday’s off-day. The third baseman ultimately was not in the starting lineup for the series finale against the White Sox.
“He's OK,” Cora said Sunday. “Hopefully one day [off], tomorrow and be ready for Tuesday. I won't rule him out for today, but you know how I feel. If he feels like he's banged up, giving him a day will benefit him. We’ll try to stay away from him.”
Devers dealt with a bone bruise in his left knee in April. He did not go on the injured list, but missed five consecutive games. He said the issue on Saturday is not as serious as what he experienced last month.
"Not at all," Devers said Saturday through an interpreter. "That's why I asked for them to take me out of the game, out of precaution, just because I don't want to have it get to that point."
June 9: OF Tyler O'Neill (right knee) out of lineup for second straight game after early exit on Friday O’Neill was out of the starting lineup on Saturday and Sunday against the White Sox before Monday’s off-day, with hopes he can avoid a stint on the injured list. O'Neill walked off the field gingerly with one out in the bottom of the third inning in Friday's eventual 7-2 loss to the White Sox, accompanied by manager Alex Cora and a trainer. The 28-year-old felt discomfort in his knee catching a Paul DeJong fly ball in the second inning. Cora said O’Neill was feeling better on Saturday.
“If we can take advantage of the next three days and avoid the IL, that's what we're going to do,” Cora said on Saturday. “Just yesterday, he didn't feel great moving around. I think we made the decision soon enough to avoid something worse.”
O'Neill was activated off the 10-day injured list on Wednesday after missing nine games with right knee inflammation. He was hopeful this flare-up will not require another IL stint.
“I still don’t think the diagnosis has changed,” O’Neill said Friday. “Nothing structural or any worry about that. Just a bit of a flare-up. Hopefully give it some time, let it calm down a little bit. Really hoping it’s just a couple of days.”
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
DH Masataka Yoshida (left thumb strain) Expected return: June Yoshida started a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on June 8, going 1-for-4 as the DH. He will DH again on June 9 and is set for another four at-bats, according to manager Alex Cora. Cora indicated that the hope is Yoshida will be able to rejoin the Red Sox at some point the week of June 10, but likely not before June 13. Yoshida had been taking live batting practice in the days prior, and on June 6, hit off a Trajekt machine. Yoshida has been on the injured list since April 29. (Last updated: June 9)
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) Expected return: June Gonzalez returned from his first IL stint (left wrist sprain) on May 8, and is down again. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he doesn't expect Gonzalez to be out "that long." Gonzalez hit indoors on June 8, and Cora said on June 9 the hope is Gonzalez will begin a rehab assignment on June 11. In 35 at-bats this season, Gonzalez is hitting .257 and has six RBIs. (Last updated: June 9)
OF Wilyer Abreu (right ankle sprain) Expected return: Later in June In a freak injury, Abreu stumbled on the dugout steps while coming in after an inning on June 2 and suffered a right ankle sprain that led to his placement on the injured list. Abreu has been one of the best all-around players on the Red Sox this season, hitting .272/.344/.485 with six homers, 14 doubles and 22 RBIs while playing excellent defense in right field.
Abreu saw a foot specialist, and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said nothing was revealed beyond the initial diagnosis of a sprain. Abreu sprinted outside on June 8, according to manager Alex Cora -- who said on June 9 that Abreu is “feeling a lot better,” and his recovery is “moving faster than everybody predicted.” (Last updated: June 9)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: TBD Grissom, who missed the first 32 games of the season with a left hamstring strain, injured his right hamstring running out a grounder to third base on June 1. The right-handed hitter underwent an MRI that revealed a mild strain. Vaughn hit indoors on June 8, according to manager Alex Cora.
"Obviously enough that we needed to put him on the IL," said Breslow. "We need to make sure that we're addressing what is pulling on the hamstring or whatever potentially is underlying and contributing to the hamstring injuries. But we'll kind of work to rehab him and get him on the field as soon as we can." (Last updated: June 9)

The Red Sox are coming home, but big tests await vs. Phillies and Yankees this week By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated June 9, 2024, 8:35 p.m.
CHICAGO — The midterm exams start this week for the Red Sox.
The Phillies, who have the best record in baseball, arrive at Fenway Park for a three-game series starting Tuesday. Then comes a three-game set against the first-place Yankees.
By record and run differential, Philadelphia and New York are the two best teams in baseball. The Phillies have a deep rotation, the highest-scoring lineup in the National League, and the fiery Bryce Harper as their leader.
The Yankees have the fearsome duo of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto batting second and third with a revitalized Giancarlo Stanton usually hitting fourth.
Philadelphia owner John Middleton and Son of The Boss Hal Steinbrenner apparently didn’t get the memo that they have only a 1-in-30 chance of winning. They built powerful teams that could meet in the World Series.
They don’t lack incentive, either. The Phillies were a win away from the World Series last season and lost two games at home against the Diamondbacks, scoring only three runs.
The Yankees finished 82-80 last season, the franchise’s worst full-season record since 1992. Manager Aaron Boone kept his job and then general manager Brian Cashman put together a seven-player trade to obtain Soto from the Padres.
For the 33-33 Red Sox, who beat the White Sox, 6-4, in 10 innings Sunday, this week will be telling.
“The Phillies are really good. They’re playing with this chip on their shoulder,” manager Alex Cora said. “What happened to them in the playoffs. I bet it’s pushing them to actually play better early in the season.”
The Phillies are 304-247 and have appeared in 30 postseason games under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who took over in 2021.
Dombrowski was fired by the Red Sox near the end of the 2019 season, less than a year after the team won the World Series. The Sox are 305-307 since and have been in 11 playoff games, none since 2021.
“I spoke to Dave in spring training and that was his wish: Let’s get off to a fast start so we don’t have to grind and we can keep guys fresh,” Cora said. “And, obviously, if they make it to October, they’re in a better place than they were the last few years.
“They’re very talented and [manager Rob Thomson] is doing an amazing job.”
Kutter Crawford is set to pitch Tuesday against Zack Wheeler. Crawford was skipped Sunday to get some extra rest after three rocky starts in a row.
The Yankee series will feature the return of Alex Verdugo to Fenway. Verdugo played his way out of Boston, showing up late too many times and giving Cora little choice but to bench him for a game last August.
Verdugo denied being late and the decision was made after the season to ship him to New York for three pitching prospects.
Verdugo is now clean-shaven, limited to one chain during the game, and not allowed to wear diamond-studded tooth caps while in uniform. He started fast with his latest new team but his statistics are now roughly what they were with the Sox last season.
The Yankees’ free agent addition of Marcus Stroman (5-2 with a 3.04 ERA in 13 starts) has been a big boost. Gerrit Cole, who won the Cy Young Award last season, has yet to appear in a game this season because of an elbow injury. But Stroman, Carlos Rodón, Nestor Cortes, and rookie Luis Gil have held the rotation together.
“They’re playing right. They’re playing with joy. There’s a lot of emotion involved and they’re really good,” Cora said. Related: Sunday baseball notes: Adam Duvall again is coming to the rescue, this time for the Braves
The trade deadline is still seven weeks away but this week will help better define what kind of team the Sox really have. They arrived at the ballpark Sunday only 1½ games out of a playoff spot. But their play on the field doesn’t reflect the qualities of a true contender.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told the Globe’s Alex Speier last week that he intended to “pick a lane” over time and be either a buyer or a seller. That means an end to the deadline waffling that marked Chaim Bloom’s tenure.
The Red Sox were 3-10 against the Guardians and Orioles earlier this season, getting outscored by 26 runs. A similar performance against the Phillies and Yankees could mean changes are coming.
Or the Sox could show Breslow — and the fan base — that they’re worthy of additions.
Cora feels his team has played hard, if not always well. Playing well this week seems mandatory.

After European vacation, Phillies set to face Red Sox FLM
The Boston Red Sox face a tall task as they look to bounce back from a disappointing trip to Chicago, facing the National League-leading Philadelphia Phillies at home for the first time since 2021 in a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
The Red Sox enter the series with a .500 record, following a split in a four-game series against the lowly White Sox.
Upcoming series against two of the best teams in baseball will be telling for Boston manager Alex Cora. The first clash of the season with the American League East rival New York Yankees awaits after the series with Philadelphia.
"The Phillies are really good. They're playing with this chip on their shoulder," Cora said. "What happened to them (last year) in the playoffs, I bet it's pushing them to actually play better early in the season."
The Phillies saw their 2023 season come to an end in a seven-game National League Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Boston's weekend at Chicago ended with a 6-4 victory in 10 innings Sunday.
The Red Sox's David Hamilton hit his first home run since May 17, and Jamie Westbrook delivered his first career game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly. Westbrook's moment came one week after he was recalled from Triple-A Worcester after 1,159 minor league games.
Westbrook also hit his first career homer during the series.
"I waited all that time, and that excitement and weight off my shoulders, it's just pretty cool, man. It really is," Westbrook said. "I think I waited so long to get here, so all the firsts, let's just get it out of the way quick and settle in."
Making his first career start against Philadelphia, Boston's Kutter Crawford (2-5, 3.51 ERA) will look for his first win since May 1. He has worked six innings in back-to-back starts, including last Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves when he allowed six runs (four earned).
Philadelphia returns stateside following a two-game split of the MLB London Series against the New York Mets. The Phillies fell 6-5 in Sunday's game as Nick Castellanos dribbled into a game-ending 2-3 double play with the bases loaded.
It still was a positive trip for the Phillies, who have won seven of their last nine games
"It was a great experience, being able to come over to Europe and play two baseball games," Castellanos said. "Ideally, you want to win them both. We came away with a split. Now it's go back and get ready for the Red Sox."
David Dahl, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley last week, hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning Sunday before the Mets scored twice in the ninth. It was his second home run in three games.
"Stuff can happen quickly," Dahl said. "If you would've asked me a week ago if I'd be here, I would have probably laughed at you."
After the matchup against Boston, Philadelphia has another three-game series with an AL East foe in the Baltimore Orioles. Phillies manager Rob Thomson knew the challenge ahead before heading to London.
"It's going to be tiring, and it's going to be tiring coming back. But we're going to have to deal with it and keep playing," Thomson said. "They're not going to cancel games for us or suspend games for us."
Zack Wheeler (7-3, 2.23) is scheduled to take the mound for the Phillies on Tuesday. He is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox.
Wheeler hasn't lost since an 0-3 start, going 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA over his last nine outings, including a win last week when he gave up one run over seven innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK With a refined swing and approach, Connor Wong has made an offensive breakthrough for the Red Sox By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 10, 2024, 7:54 p.m.
Connor Wong has found some sustained success at the plate this season. The sample size is large enough to put to paper such a take.
In 48 games (186 plate appearances) the Red Sox catcher is hitting .329/.387/.455 with an .842 OPS and five homers.
Wong ranked second in the majors among catchers in batting average with at least 150 plate appearances heading into Monday, seventh in slugging, and fifth in OPS.
Wong has always been known for his surprising pop at the plate despite his size. Though he’s listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 190 pounds, that seems extremely generous; an educated guess might put him around 5-10, if that. Yet, his level of consistency is something of note.
So, how has he done this?
“We know that Connor has the ability to impact the baseball, for him it’s been two things,” noted Red Sox hitting coach Pete Fatse via text Monday. ”One, there’s an emphasis on being as direct as possible with his swing path, which has led to more zone contact.”
Indeed it has. Wong’s zone-contact percentage is up from 80.4 percent last year to 86.6 this year. His overall contact percentage is up from 69.7 percent last season to 75.6 this season. Though he’s still prone to the swing-and-miss, his swinging strike percentage is down from 15.7 percent in 2023 to 12.9 this year. R Being in his second full season in the big leagues has worked to his benefit, especially when a player has the runway and the ability to see the league. But, equally, it was the offseason work that Wong put in with Fatse that has helped shape him.
So, what else has Wong done?
“Two, he’s balancing a more aggressive approach within his game plan,” said Fatse. “Being prepared to swing from pitch one in the area he is looking.”
Wong has always been an aggressive hitter. But the issue with some of his aggression in the past was that it did not coincide with consistent contact and chase. He still chases at a 30 percent clip, but that’s about 5 percent less than last season. Having an idea of the type of hitter he is combined with more of an understanding of what he wants to do at the plate as he’s matured has yielded these results. The Sox didn’t try to deviate from Wong’s aggressive approach (he has just 10 walks on the season). But if Wong wanted to have that sort of game plan, the requirement was always more contact.
“You make the adjustments but you gotta make it as simple as possible,” said Cora in regards to Wong last week in Chicago. “One thing that he’s doing, is if he gets a pitch in the zone, he’s swinging. Last year it was the auto take and strike one, then he would foul off a pitch, 0-2, then you have to go to battle. He also swung and missed a lot. He chased a lot of pitches with two strikes. This year, I don’t think he’s getting to two strikes that often. He’s hunting pitches in the zone and putting good swings on it.” Crawford starts Tuesday
The Phillies (45-20) come to Fenway with the best record in baseball. Zack Wheeler will take the ball against Kutter Crawford in the series opener Tuesday. The Sox skipped Crawford’s start Sunday and instead employed a bullpen game in order to give Crawford an extra couple of days’ rest. Crawford has a 5.82 ERA in his last six starts compared to a 1.56 ERA in his first seven starts. Crawford said last week that he’s ready to go for his start Tuesday. “Whenever you’re competing against some of the better teams in the league, it’s always a test to kind of see where you’re at and where your stuff is at,” said Crawford … Nick Pivetta will take the hill Wednesday, followed by Tanner Houck Thursday for the series finale. Both of Philadelphia’s starters are to be determined … The Red Sox are just 14-18 at home this year compared to 19-15 on the road. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games and have split their last two series against the Braves and White Sox, respectively.

Game 67: Phillies at Red Sox lineups and notesBy Andrew Mahoney Globe Staff,Updated June 11, 2024, 2 hours ago These are the times that try men’s souls, as well as a team’s fan base. After needing a ninth-inning rally just to salvage a split with the MLB cellar-dwelling White Sox, the Red Sox return to Fenway to host a pair of three-game series, beginning with the Phillies, who have the best winning percentage (.692) in MLB and are 45-20, and concluding this weekend with the Yankees, whose 47-21 mark is tops in the American League (.691 winning percentage). Red Sox injuries: Rookie outfielder might return from IL later this week

BOSTON — There’s a chance Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu will return from the 10-day injured list right when he’s eligible (Thursday) or very soon after.
Abreu sprained his right ankle falling down the dugout stairs during Boston’s game against the Tigers on June 2. The Red Sox placed him on the injured list June 4 (retroactive to June 3).
“Wilyer is doing everything today on the field, which is awesome,” manager Alex Cora said Tuesday at Fenway Park. “We’re thinking about more. ... It feels like it’s going to be a lot shorter. A testament to him because of the willingness to do everything possible to be out there. And it’s been a great recovery.”
Cora said Abreu might be sent out on a one-game rehab assignment.
“Probably send him down there for one game so he can move around, we’ll talk about it, and then be here with us,” Cora said.
O’Neill could return to lineup Wednesday
~ Outfielder Tyler O’Neill is not in the Red Sox lineup again Tuesday because of knee soreness. He “probably” will be ready to DH on Wednesday and play the outfield Thursday, Cora said.
“We talked to him today. He’s feeling better,” Cora said. “He’ll go through everything. He’s gained ground the last two days. Obviously managing the whole situation. It feels like (Abreu) is going to be back with us sooner rather than later. So we’re going to have some decisions to make lineup wise.”
Other injury updates:
~ Setup man Chris Martin, who Boston placed on the 15-day injured list June 5 (retroactive to June 2) with anxiety, threw a bullpen session Tuesday. He’s “feeling a lot better,” Cora said.
Martin worked out in Worcester while the Red Sox were in Chicago to play the White Sox. Cora said the righty also attended the Savannah Bananas game at Fenway over the weekend.
~ Second baseman Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) is “feeling better,” Cora said. “Doing some baseball activities.” Boston placed Grissom on the injured list June 2.
~ First baseman Triston Casas (fractured cartilage which connects his ribcage to his sternum) continues to take ground balls but he has not swung a bat yet. He’s eligible to return from the 60-day IL on June 21, but Casas is targeting around July 1.
~ Utility player Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) most likely will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday.
