O'Neill hits 2 of Boston's 4 home runs as Red Sox beat Blue Jays 7-3 for 6th victory in 8 games AP
TORONTO (AP) Tyler O’Neill hit two of Boston’s four home runs, fellow Canadian Nick Pivetta pitched seven innings and the Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3 on Monday night for their sixth win in eight games.
One day after setting a team record with nine stolen bases, the Red Sox slugged their way to victory by going deep four times off Yusei Kikuchi, matching his career worst.
Boston didn’t steal any bases, but Romy Gonzalez was caught stealing twice.
Gonzalez got caught in a rundown and was tagged out at third base in the fourth inning. Toronto used video replay to overturn a safe call at third on Boston’s double-steal attempt in the eighth.
Pivetta (4-4) allowed three runs and nine hits. He walked one and struck out four.
“It’s always very exciting for me to pitch in my home country,” Pivetta said. “My mom was here today with my aunt, so I think that’s really great. I was happy that we could put the win together and have a good day.”
O’Neill and Pivetta were both born in the western province of British Columbia.
“It’s always fun coming back home and breathing that northern air, just being up here for a little bit,” O’Neill said.
Brad Keller got five outs but exited after two Blue Jays reached in the ninth. Kenley Jansen came on and retired Davis Schneider for his 12th save in 13 chances.
Boston’s first four hits were all solo homers. O’Neill and Rafael Devers hit back-to-back shots with two outs in the first.
“Offensively, we came out hot,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “The two homers put us in a good spot.”
Ceddanne Rafaela homered to begin the third and O’Neill launched his second two outs later.
O’Neill’s homers were his 13th and 14th. It was his second multi-homer game of the season and the seventh of his career.
“It’s a better lineup when he’s playing,” Cora said.
O’Neill came in 0 for 9 in his only two previous games in Toronto but turned that around in his first two trips to the plate. He grounded out to end the fifth, was intentionally walked in the seventh and hit into a double play in the ninth.
Devers hit his 14th home run. Ceddanne’s was his eighth.
The Red Sox have scored five runs or more eight times in 12 games. Boston is 27-15 when hitting at least one home run, and 11-20 without one.
Kikuchi (4-6) permitted five runs and seven hits in four innings. He walked none and struck out seven.
“Just an abnormal start for Yusei with his stuff tonight,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said.
The left-hander hadn’t allowed more than one home run in any of his previous 14 starts this season. He last gave up four against Houston on Aug. 2, 2019, his rookie season with Seattle.
Justin Turner reached base three times and hit a solo home run for Toronto, his first since April 29.
Davis Schneider also homered for the Blue Jays, his ninth.
ROSTER MOVES
Boston activated Gonzalez (left hamstring) from the 10-day injured list and optioned INF/OF Jamie Westbrook to Triple-A Worcester.
Toronto put RHP Yimi García (elbow) on the 15-day IL and selected the contract of LHP Brandon Eisert from Triple-A Buffalo.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Red Sox: SS David Hamilton exited after three innings because of discomfort on his left side. He was replaced by Enmanuel Valdez. “We were proactive, so hopefully not an IL stint,” Cora said of Hamilton. “We’ll know more tomorrow.”
Blue Jays: SS Bo Bichette (right calf) sat out for the third straight game.
UP NEXT
RHP Chris Bassitt (6-6, 3.56 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Blue Jays on Tuesday night against Red Sox RHP Tanner Houck (7-5, 2.08).

O'Neill homers twice in homecoming as Sox flex power 12:40 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
TORONTO -- It was a couple of hours before game time on Monday when a Toronto-based reporter asked Red Sox manager Alex Cora to describe the identity of his team.
“Shoot, man, we went from hitting a lot of home runs and striking out [earlier in the season] to all of a sudden, we’ve become the go-go Sox to be honest with you,” Cora said. “We’ve just got a bunch of athletes.”
For at least one night, the Red Sox went back to the long ball, bashing four of them in the first three innings of a 7-3 victory over the Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series.
This display of power came a night after Cora’s club notched a team record of nine stolen bases in a win over the Yankees.
What has been an up-and-down season so far for the 38-35 Red Sox might be gaining some momentum. After winning consecutive home series against the Phillies and Yankees -- the teams with the two best records in the Majors -- Boston started this six-game road trip auspiciously.
“It’s just a dynamic lineup,” said Tyler O'Neill, the British Columbia native who bashed two homers in his third career game in his home country. “We can do a lot. We’ve got speed and we can pop the ball out of the yard anytime. There's lots of ways we can put the runs on the board. We’ve done a good job of that of late.”
It was O’Neill, fittingly, who got the party started when he went deep to left with two outs in the first. For O’Neill, it was his first homer in Toronto. He’d hit a second just two innings later.
Was the seventh multi-homer game of O’Neill’s career more special because it happened in Canada?
“Definitely,” said O’Neill. “I want to show up in front of the home crowd, I guess you could say. I saw a lot of maple leafs walking around today. So that's fun to see. Made sure to get my Tim Horton’s this morning. I'm enjoying being up north for a little bit. Awesome fans up here … and it’s a beautiful ballpark as well.”
Rafael Devers followed O’Neill’s first homer with one of his own. The back-to-back shots by Boston’s 3-4 combo staked winning pitcher Nick Pivetta, another son of British Columbia, to a 2-0 lead before he threw his first pitch.
Ceddanne Rafaela, the rookie who has swung the bat well of late after a slow start, also went deep, hitting his eighth of the season out to left-center.
“I think the group has done an amazing job helping him with his hands,” said Cora. “I think they're in a better place right now. He actually has more time to make [swing] decisions and he's hitting [the] ball hard.”
In his last 43 at-bats dating back to June 6, Rafaela’s batting line is .442/.467/.558. During the surge, he’s raised his average from .202 to .243, all the while continuing to play superb defense in center field.
While the offense took center stage on Monday, Pivetta played a big part as well, going seven innings for his second career victory at Rogers Centre. He scattered nine hits and allowed three runs while throwing 109 pitches.
“It's always very exciting for me to pitch in my home country,” said Pivetta. “My mom is here today with my aunt, so I think that's really great. And I was happy that we could put a win together and have a good day and be consistent as we were today.”
Consistency will be a key word in the coming weeks if the Red Sox want to prove themselves as legitimate contenders. They trail by 2 1/2 games in the American League Wild Card standings and will try to convince the front office to buy rather than sell prior to the July 30 Trade Deadline.
“We're playing pretty good. We’re pitching the ball well. The boys are hitting the ball well,” said O’Neill. “The boys are doing well.”

Injuries & Moves: Hamilton (left side soreness) exits early Monday 12:50 AM ADT
MLB.com LATEST NEWS
June 17: INF David Hamilton exits early due to left side soreness A day after becoming just the third Red Sox player to steal four bases in a game, Hamilton exited Monday's game in the bottom of the fourth inning with left side soreness. Manager Alex Cora is hopeful the invaluable rookie can avoid a stint on the 10-day injured list. Hamilton has come on at the plate in recent weeks and is third in the American League with 18 stolen bases.
"We'll see how he comes in tomorrow," said Cora. "I think we were proactive, so hopefully it's not an IL stint. He said he felt it pregame, but it wasn't bad. And, then I think in the first swing of [one of his] at-bats, it grabbed him."
June 17: Romy Gonzalez activated from 15-day injured list; Jamie Westbrook optioned to Triple-A Worcester Gonzalez returned to the Red Sox on Monday after missing the last couple of weeks with a left hamstring strain. The right-handed hitter played in three rehab games with Worcester from Thursday-Saturday, going 6-for-12 with four RBIs, a walk and a stolen base while making two starts at first base and one at DH. Gonzalez came into Monday's game with a .257 average (9-for-35) with six RBIs while making six starts at shortstop, one at first base, one at DH and appearing in two games in right field and one at third base. He was claimed off waivers from the White Sox on January 31.
To make room for Gonzalez, the Red Sox sent Westbrook back to Worcester. Westbrook's call-up last month was one of the feel-good stories of the season; he had spent 11 years in the Minors before finally making it to the Majors. The 28-year-old got into 11 games, going 4-for-18 with a double, a homer, four RBIs and two walks.
June 16: RHP Chris Martin joins team in Toronto, could be activated Tuesday Martin, who went on the 15-day injured list on June 5 (retroactive to June 2) with anxiety, joined the Red Sox for their road trip in Toronto after pitching in a Minor League rehab game on Sunday. It's likely he will be activated for Tuesday's game. Martin has also been managing a left shoulder injury for most of the season.
"I'm going to do some things today to really test it out," said Martin. "I'm going to work out really hard and see how I recover tomorrow. Obviously I've been battling a left shoulder deal that I've been rehabbing that is starting to trend in the right direction. That's a plus. Obviously that's not the reason I'm on the IL. I've been managing some things, anxiety and things were the possible reason for the fatigue I was feeling. I'm trending in the right direction there, so that's obviously a plus."
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: July Grissom, who missed the first 32 games of the season with a left hamstring strain, injured his right hamstring running out a grounder to third base on June 1. According to manager Alex Cora, Grissom is doing everything baseball related but not sprinting at full speed.
“Right now he's still weak with the hammy," said Cora. "We’re trying to build him up so that’s where we’re at.” (Last updated: June 17)
RHP Bryan Mata (right lat strain) Expected return: TBD Mata suffered a right lat strain making a Minor League rehab appearance on May 23 while he was in the final stages of recovering from a right hamstring strain. He started another rehab assignment on June 16 at Double-A Portland, pitching two scoreless innings. Mata's rehab assignment can go a maximum of 30 days.
Mata, ranked as Boston's No. 27 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is out of options, meaning he needs to be placed on the Major League roster once he is healthy to avoid being designated for assignment. (Last updated: June 17)

Red Sox reliever on being on IL with anxiety: ‘You have to take care of it’
Published: Jun. 17, 2024, 8:31 p.m.
By
Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
TORONTO — Barring a last-minute setback, Red Sox setup man Chris Martin will return from the injured list and be activated for Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. And though Martin’s absence has not been long (13 games as of Monday), his pending return is a significant one because of the reason he was sidelined for two weeks.
Martin has been on the 15-day IL since June 5 (retroactive to June 2) with anxiety-related symptoms after feeling fatigued and not being able to sleep as much as he wanted to in recent weeks. The 38-year-old pitched just twice between May 22 and May 30 and ultimately was taken off the roster due to his symptoms.
For privacy reasons, the exact details of Martin’s bout with anxiety remain scarce. But as he readied himself to rejoin the bullpen after a successful one-inning rehab outing Sunday in Buffalo, Martin said his symptoms have improved while adding that he still has some things to work through in the coming weeks and months.
“The support I got from the organization and throughout the league has been great,” Martin said. “Trending in the right direction. Still have to work on things, like if it was a physical thing.
“When you come out with something like that, you start realizing there’s other guys going through what you’re going through. It was kinda hard to bring that up but I think the support I got was a lot different than when you get an injury on your elbow or shoulder. This is something I had to learn. When you have an injury, you’ve got to take care of it. When you have a mental injury, you have to take care of it just as well and not let it bottle up, fester and turn into a huge thing.”
Martin joins a growing list of players — that includes Austin Meadows, Daniel Bard and others — who have hit the IL with anxiety in recent years. As the stigma around mental health has lessened in recent seasons, the conversation about anxiety-related issues in athletics has grown louder. Red Sox officials like chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Alex Cora have commended Martin for speaking up and taking a break he felt was necessary. The Red Sox said they’d let Martin dictate his timeline to return to the mound and it appears things have improved to a point where he’s ready to pitch after spending just a couple days more than the minimum required for pitchers on the IL.
“I’ve been managing some things, anxiety and things that were a possibility to cause the fatigue I was feeling,” said Martin, who found himself easily tiring while working out before games in recent weeks. We’re trending in the right direction so that’s a plus ... The legs and fatigue with the stuff I was battling was the main reason.”
Martin, who pitched to a stellar 1.05 ERA last season, has had an up-and-down start to the 2024 season on the mound. He struggled in April (5.56 ERA) then dominated for much of May before allowing three runs on four hits in his last outing May 30. In total, he owns a 4.22 ERA in 21 ⅓ innings over 21 appearances; he has struck out 24 batters.
Martin has been battling significant pain in his left (non-throwing) shoulder all season and the Red Sox believe it has impacted his delivery in a negative way. The Sox’ team of doctors have devised a treatment plan for the issue, which Martin said he first noticed during a round of golf with former teammate Ryan Brasier over the winter. It’s something the veteran righty plans to manage and have addressed this winter.
“My (right) arm’s good,” Martin said. “Obviously, been battling the left shoulder deal that I’ve been rehabbing. It’s starting to trend in the right direction. That’s a plus. Obviously, it wasn’t the reason I went on the IL but that was a thing I wanted to focus on while getting a little bit of time off.
“I’m probably going to have to get it looked at, at the end of the year. But it would look kinda silly if I ended my year with a left shoulder injury. I’ll get through it.”
Veteran long relievers Chase Anderson and Brad Keller are the two pitchers who would seem to be in the most jeopardy of losing their roster spots when Martin is activated.
“Let’s see how he feels today,” Cora said. “He’s gonna move around. There’s a good chance he’ll be active tomorrow.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Reliever Chris Martin, sidelined two weeks by anxiety, rejoins Red Sox in Toronto By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 17, 2024, 8:04 p.m.
TORONTO — Chris Martin joined the Red Sox in Toronto, on the cusp of returning to the team after a two-week stint away battling anxiety.
The Sox placed Martin on the injured list at the start of June. Manager Alex Cora said there is the possibility he’ll be activated before Tuesday’s middle game of the three against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
Martin pitched a scoreless inning for Triple A Worcester on Sunday in Buffalo and feels as though he’s in a better place.
“The legs were fatigued with the [anxiety] I was battling. Obviously, that was the main reason,” said Martin before Monday’s 7-3 victory. “I feel like I’ve bounced back pretty good from my outing. It was hot in Buffalo, so that was a pretty good test.”
Martin, a critical setup man in 2023 who has a 4.22 ERA in 21⅓ innings this season, continues to battle through left shoulder issues he said might require a procedure during the offseason. Martin initially felt pain when he was golfing with former Red Sox reliever Ryan Brasier last offseason.
“It’s something that I can manage. It’s fine. It’s just, it kind of messes with me in between the games,” Martin said. “When I get in the game, adrenaline kicks in and I’m fine, but it creates some bad habits whenever I can feel it playing catch, warming up, when the adrenaline [isn’t] out there. So I got to be mindful of that.”
Martin briefly addressed his anxiety issues, adding that he’s appreciative for all the support he received.
“You start realizing that there’s other guys kind of going through what you’re going through and that’s hard to bring that up,” said Martin. “But I think the support that I got was a lot different than, when you [suffer] an injury in your elbow or shoulder. This is something I had to learn.
“You have an injury, you take care of it. When you have a mental injury, you got to take care of it just as well, and not let it bottle up, fester, and turn into a huge thing. So the support that I got from the organization, obviously, throughout the league, has been great.”
Stealing Sox
The Red Sox set a franchise record in Sunday evening’s win over the Yankees, tallying nine stolen bases. It was the first time since 1940 that the Sox collected more than six in a game, and just the 10th time since the end of the 1918 season a team stole at least nine.
“It was fun to watch from my end,” said manager Alex Cora, whose team was caught on both its attempts — both by Romy Gonzalez — Monday. “It was kind of watching the game and taking advantage of certain situations. There were a lot of first-and-thirds with the right guys. Teams are going to take advantage.”
David Hamilton swiped four bags, becoming the third Red Sox to do so alongside Jacoby Ellsbury, who did it twice (including a team record five-steal game in 2013), and Jerry Remy. Jarren Duran had two steals, and Dom Smith, Bobby Dalbec, and Ceddanne Rafaela one each.
“Credit to [third base coach] Kyle Hudson, and first base coach Andy Fox,” stated Cora. “They’ve been working hard, just trying to help them out to see the game and take advantage of what the game is telling you. So far, it’s been fun to watch.”
The Sox have tailored their play to fit their personnel, relying on athleticism to score runs instead of the long ball with Triston Casas still on the shelf. The Sox routinely put Hamilton, Rafaela, and Duran at both ends of the order; they were arranged 8-9-1 on Monday, after multiple days on the homestand of Rafaela wrapping to Duran and Hamilton.
“We just got a bunch of athletes and a bunch of young guys,” said Cora. “Actually [George] Springer said to me that it reminded him of when he was in Houston early in his career. Just go out there and prove everybody wrong and prove that you belong in the big leagues. And we have a bunch of guys. It hasn’t been great, but it’s been good.”
Hamilton was removed from Monday’s game following the top of the fourth inning with left side discomfort. The shortstop struck out in his first two at-bats, with Gonzalez — activated from the IL before the game — shifting to short and Enmanuel Valdez entering to play second base.
Cora said Hamilton felt the discomfort pregame, with it grabbing worse on the first swing of his second at-bat. The Sox will know more on Tuesday, and are optimistic he can avoid a trip to the injured list. Gonzalez returns
Gonzalez started at second after missing 15 games with a hamstring strain. Jamie Westbrook was optioned back to Worcester after appearing in the first 11 games of his career . . . Wilyer Abreu (ankle) is still on schedule to go on a rehab assignment Tuesday and Wednesday with the WooSox. The Sox are hopeful he will join them in Cincinnati for their weekend series against the Reds . . . Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) is running, Cora said, but not at full speed.

After taking opener in Toronto, Red Sox turn to Tanner Houck FLM
The visiting Boston Red Sox got a boost from their Canadians in the series opener. Now they will aim for a series victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
Nick Pivetta, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, pitched seven effective innings and Tyler O'Neill of Burnaby, British Columbia, hit two solo homers in a 7-3 Boston victory on Monday that started the three-game series.
The Red Sox will turn to right-hander Tanner Houck (7-5, 2.08 ERA) on Tuesday. In five career games (four starts) against Toronto, he is 0-1 with a 4.58 ERA. The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Chris Bassitt (6-6, 3.56). He is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three career starts against Boston.
Houck will be looking to build off what Pivetta gave the Red Sox as they won their third straight game. The right-handed surrendered three runs on nine hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
"It was huge, where we were bullpen wise we needed a long one," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Pivetta's outing.
"I think the biggest thing is the guys got some runs early and I was able to settle in," Pivetta said. "It's always very exciting for me to pitch in my home country. My mom was here today with my aunt, so I think that's really great. I was happy that we could put the win together and have a good day."
O'Neill also enjoyed turning in a big performance in his native country.
"I wanted to show up in front of the home crowd, I guess you could say," he said. "It's always fun coming back home and breathing that northern air, just being up here for a little bit."
The Blue Jays, on the other hand, will look for a better performance out of Bassitt than they got from left-hander Yusei Kikuchi in the Monday loss.
"Just an abnormal start for Yusei with his stuff tonight," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said after Kikuchi gave up five runs on seven hits -- including four home runs -- in four innings.
Bassitt was particularly effective against Boston last season, when he gave up three runs on 11 hits with six walks and 11 strikeouts over 14 innings across two starts.
One player who likes seeing Bassitt is Rafael Devers. The Red Sox third baseman is 3-for-8 with a double and two home runs in his career against Bassitt.
Both teams are also dealing with injuries.
Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette (calf) missed his third consecutive contest on Monday but took ground balls before the game.
The Blue Jays also placed right-hander Yimi Garcia (right elbow neuritis) on the injured list on Monday and promoted left-hander Brandon Eisert, who pitched two scoreless innings against Boston in his major league debut.
An MRI exam revealed no structural damage for Garcia. Chad Green likely will be the closer in his absence. Garcia had been filling that role with Jordan Romano (right elbow inflammation) on the IL.
Boston shortstop David Hamilton (left side discomfort) left the opener at Toronto in the fourth inning.
"We were proactive (in taking him out)," Cora said. "We will know more (Tuesday). He said he felt it a bit pregame, but in his first at-bat it grabbed him."
Boston reinstated Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) from the IL on Monday and optioned infielder Jamie Westbrook to Triple-A Worcester. Gonzalez started at second base but moved to shortstop when Hamilton left the game, with Enmanuel Valdez taking over at second.
