Tyler Milliken ⚾️ @tylermilliken_ So far in the month of June, here is where the Red Sox rank in MLB in terms of offense:
BA: 291 - 1st OBP: .372 - 1st SLG: .475 - 6th Runs: 92 - 4th RBI: 86 - 5th HR: 19 - 13th wRC+: 134 - 5th
.@jcmccaffrey dove into the changes the Red Sox have made behind the scenes with their offensive game-planning since the start of the Rays series.
Instead of a generic big meeting where they plan for how to face the other team’s arms, they’re now doing a lot of 1-on-1 work with guys. The big meeting has been shortened since.

Then why in hell did they send Crisswell down?
Pete Abraham @peteabe #RedSox rotation in Cincinnati will be Crawford, Pivetta and TBA. So Houck will get some extra time off.
He said the other day his pitches have flattened out a but in his last two starts despite solid results (5 ER/11.2 IP). 7:01 PM · Jun 19, 2024 · 5,655 Views

Duran and Valdez homer, Bello gets win as Red Sox beat Blue Jays 7-3 to complete sweep AP
TORONTO (AP) Jarren Duran and Enmanuel Valdez hit solo home runs, Brayan Bello pitched six innings to snap a three-start winless streak, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.
Duran, who had two hits and two RBIs, extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Valdez scored all three times he reached base as the Red Sox matched a season best by winning their fifth straight and eighth in their last 10.
The Red Sox, who earned their fourth sweep, have won three straight series. Boston took two of three from Philadelphia and the Yankees before arriving in Toronto.
“I’m very proud of the guys to beat the Phillies and the Yankees and get greedy, come here and play three great games,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “That was fun to watch."
Duran said the Red Sox spoke before the Toronto series about the importance of continuing to play well.
“Our season doesn’t end because we played two good teams and won,” Duran said. “We’ve got to just keep rolling. I was really proud of the way we played.”
The Blue Jays were swept for the first time this season.
“They’re playing really well right now and we just didn’t do enough to win,” manager John Schneider said.
The past eight series between Boston and Toronto have all been sweeps, with the Red Sox winning three. The Blue Jays and Orioles also had eight straight series finish as sweeps in 2009 and 2010.
Toronto made four errors. The Blue Jays are 9-20 when they make at least one error.
Bello (7-4) allowed two runs and seven hits to win for the first time since May 28 at Baltimore.
“The team has been playing so well the last few days,” Bello said through a translator. “I wanted to keep it going and it was very important for me to be able to do that.”
Justin Slaten pitched two innings, giving up a run on a wild pitch in the seventh, and Chris Martin finished for Boston.
Martin’s appearance was his first since being activated off the injured list after missing time because of anxiety.
“He felt good,” Cora said. “He said, stuff-wise, probably the best he’s felt.”
Martin remained in the game after falling backwards while fielding a comebacker from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the second out.
“I felt like maybe I got in a car wreck,” Martin said.
Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman (5-6) lost his second straight start, allowing five runs, four earned, and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Boston’s David Hamilton opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third and Valdez made it 2-0 with a second-deck drive in the fourth.
Toronto scored twice in the fourth to tie it, but Duran restored the lead with a 433-foot, one-out homer in the fifth.
Romy Gonzalez chased Gausman with an RBI single in the sixth. Tim Mayza came on and gave up an RBI single to Duran.
Smith hit an RBI double in the eighth and a second run scored on Guerrero’s fielding error.
MANE MAN
Blue Jays slugger Guerrero showed off a new short haircut and also caught the ceremonial first pitch from his daughter, Vlaimel.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Red Sox: Cora said OF Wilyer Abreu (right ankle) is expected to come off the injured list Friday or Saturday. Abreu began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: RHP Kutter Crawford (3-6, 3.54) is scheduled to start Friday as Boston opens a three-game series at Cincinnati. LHP Andrew Abbott (5-6, 3.42) is scheduled for the Reds.
Blue Jays: Toronto had not named a starter for Friday’s game at Cleveland. RHP Carlos Carrasco (2-6, 5.80) is scheduled for the Guardians.

Bello getting back on track as Sox stay hot with sweep 12:49 AM ADT Ian Browne

TORONTO -- Maybe this was the grind Brayan Bello needed to get his season headed back in the right direction.
There was plenty of bend to the talented righty Wednesday night at Rogers Centre, but no break, as a resilient Bello helped the Red Sox complete a three-game sweep with a 7-3 victory over the Jays.
Bello threw his only 1-2-3 inning on just 10 pitches in his final frame, the sixth. It was a nice way for the 25-year-old to complete his first quality start since May 22 and just his second since his return from the injured list on May 12.
In an 88-pitch outing, Bello threw 60 strikes. Bello scattered seven hits while allowing two runs and two walks while striking out six.
For Bello, Wednesday’s mission was all about throwing strikes.
“I think for me the key was to try to get ahead of the hitters,” Bello said. “I tried to be aggressive and attack the zone.”
Give the Blue Jays credit for their persistence.
They made it a bit of a bumpy ride for Bello on a night he improved to 7-4 and lowered his ERA to 4.83.
Even when the Jays scored two runs in the fourth, Bello prevented the inning from getting out of hand. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Bello got Justin Turner to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and Vlad Guerrero Jr. on a scorching lineout (110.1 mph exit velocity) to center.
The DP off the bat of Turner on a 95 mph sinker was easily the biggest pitch of the night for Bello.
“That was my goal,” said Bello. “My goal there was to try to get two outs.”
While Bello’s performance was the most welcome development of the night for the Red Sox, this was a good night on multiple facets. Here are a few:
No letup After taking four out of six last week against two of the top teams in baseball in the Phillies and Yankees, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was determined for his team not to have a letdown north of the border.
He got his wish, as the Sox pushed their winning streak to five while getting to five games above .500 (40-35) for the first time since May 1.
“We had a little bit of a talk just to make sure,” said Jarren Duran. “It was like, ‘Hey, man, I know we played two tough teams, but we just gotta keep rolling. Our season doesn't end because we played two good teams and won.’ I was really proud of the way we played.”
Duran does it again Speaking of Duran, he continued his push to try to become an All-Star for the first time, mashing a solo shot to center in the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie as part of a 2-for-5 night in which he stole two more bases to give him 19 for the season.
Duran’s sixth homer of the season was a missile, traveling a projected distance of 433 feet. It was the second longest homer of his career, per Statcast, trailing a 434-foot shot he hit also against the Blue Jays on May 1, 2023.
At some point, Duran has to develop a home run trot. For now, his teammates are getting a kick out of him sprinting out of the box every time he goes deep.
“For a second I thought I didn't get it, so I started to sprint, just because I don't hit enough [home runs] to know,” said Duran.
Martin’s return When the Red Sox opened up a four-run lead on a night closer Kenley Jansen was getting a rest, it was the perfect time to get Chris Martin back into action in the bottom of the ninth. The veteran righty was activated Tuesday after going on the 15-day injured list for symptoms related to anxiety.
Martin made an acrobatic -- if somewhat awkward -- play on defense: while losing his balance on a 77.5 mph chopper off the bat of Guerrero, Martin somehow snared the ball barehanded while he was falling down behind the mound. From a prone position, he fired to first for the out. It was the latest in a series of adventurous comebackers for Martin this season.
“I felt like maybe I got in a car wreck,” said Martin. “I’d like to stay on my feet a couple of games in a row. That would be nice, but I got the out and it was a good win.”

Playing his second game for Triple-A Worcester, Abreu hammered two solo homers. All systems are go for him to be activated during Boston's three-game series in Cincinnati that starts Friday. The only question is whether Abreu is activated on Friday or Saturday. There's a chance he will DH for Worcester on Thursday.

Red Sox win, sweep Blue Jays behind Brayan Bello’s Houdini act on mound

TORONTO — After taking two of three from the Yankees over the weekend, Red Sox manager Alex Cora preached the importance of his team staying laser-focused as they began their road trip with a three-day trip to Rogers Centre. On Wednesday, behind a Houdini act by starter Brayan Bello and a couple of big hits from Jarren Duran, the Sox finished off a three-game sweep of Toronto to stay rolling.
Boston beat the Jays, 7-3, to extend its winning streak to five games and its overall record to 40-35. Bello worked out of constant traffic to go six innings while Duran and second baseman Enmanuel Valdez powered the offense with solo homers. The Red Sox have now won seven of eight and eight of 10; they’re five games above .500 for the first time since May 1, when they were 18-13.
The previously scuffling Bello had runners in scoring position against him in the first five innings he pitched, but only surrendered two runs in six frames. Toronto went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position against him, leaving eight on base. Bello spent much of his outing pitching with the lead and recorded his first quality start since May 22.
The Sox got on the board in the third thanks to two Jays errors, with Romy González reaching on one and then scoring on a David Hamilton RBI single. Valdez doubled the lead with a long blast down the left field line, his sixth homer of the season. Up 2-0 in the fourth, Bello’s early-inning trouble finally bit him.
Addison Barger, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Kevin Kiermaier all singled, with Kiermaier’s knock making it 2-1. Justin Turner then hit in a 6-4-3 double play to plate another run before Bello got Vlad Guerrero Jr. to hit a rocket liner to González in center to tie the game. It wouldn’t stay knotted long.
Duran, adding to his All-Star candidacy, took starter Kevin Gausman way deep to center with one out, giving the Sox the lead again with a 433-foot blast (also his sixth of 2024). An inning later, after another Bello escape, González drove in Masataka Yoshida with an RBI single, then Duran made it 5-2 with one of his own. Things tightened up in the seventh when Turner scored on a Justin Slaten wild pitch.
With a two-run lead again, the Red Sox jumped all over reliever Ryan Burr in the eighth, leading off with three straight hits (including a Dom Smith RBI double that scored Valdez) and extending the lead to four. Justin Slaten tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Bello before Chris Martin, making his first appearance since returning from the injured list due to a bout with anxiety, tossed a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation; he made a barehanded play on a chopper while falling backwards for the second out of the inning.
The Red Sox kept the pressure on Toronto with their speed, stealing five bases (they were 5-for-5). Duran, Hamilton and Valdez each had two of Boston’s 10 hits.
Trip to Cincinnati up next
The Red Sox are off Thursday before traveling to Cincinnati to face the Reds for three games over the weekend. The Reds are 35-39 entering play; the Red Sox have played just five games at Great American Ball Park since 2014 (2017, 2022).
Here’s the schedule (along with pitching probables) for the series:
Friday, 7:10 p.m. ET — RHP Kutter Crawford (3-6, 3.54 ERA) vs. LHP Andrew Abbott (5-6, 3.42 ERA)
Saturday, 4:10 p.m. ET — RHP Nick Pivetta (4-4, 3.88 ERA) vs. RHP Frankie Montas (3-5, 4.62 ERA)
Sunday, 1:40 p.m. ET — TBD vs. TBD
