RED SOX NOTEBOOK David Hamilton has become a force for the Red Sox, and not just because of his speed By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 25, 2024, 8:06 p.m.
David Hamilton’s two-run homer in the eighth inning Monday not only played a huge part in the Red Sox’ comeback win, it also offered a glimpse into his development.
Hamilton has found his footing at the plate, becoming a force beyond just his speed. Consider that on May 4, the infielder’s OPS was just .592. But Hamilton’s OPS is up to .841, which includes a slash line of .282/.333/.449 with five home runs. He got the night off on Tuesday, when the Sox lost, 9-4, to the Blue Jays.
“It might be the work I’m doing in the cage,” said Hamilton Tuesday afternoon. “But I think every at-bat I’m just trying to hit a line drive.”
No doubt, Hamilton is at his best when he’s hitting line drives. But what led to his early struggles was his high ground-ball rate. In the first month of the season, Hamilton had a ground-ball rate of 41.7 percent. This month, however, Hamilton is hitting the ball on the ground at just a 24.5 percent clip, while his fly-ball percentage is up to 51 compared with 31.6 last month.
But it’s not just that Hamilton is hitting the ball in the air.
“He’s hitting it hard in the air,” said manager Alex Cora. “He made some adjustments as far as being straight to the ball. He’s shorter. You saw it yesterday with the [home run] he got to the four-seamer. Everything he’s hitting is hard. It’s on a line. He can go the other way. He’s on time. I think that’s the most important thing. He’s been fun to watch because this player from where he was in Anaheim [earlier this year] to now, he’s a different player. He’s very dynamic.”
A more refined Hamilton doesn’t try to initiate the move of hitting the ball in the air. That’s when the holes show up. Hamilton has first-hand experience.
In 2022 and ‘23, Hamilton had a significant number of infield popups. His swing became loopy as a result of him trying to create the move of getting the ball in the air.
Now, his direct path is paying dividends.
“I think that’s who I was growing up, just a line-drive hitter,” said Hamilton. “I would get ahold of a ball and it would go out. I kind of got away from that a little bit, and slowly I’m starting to get back to it. I’m just trying to be a little more direct, and it’s been showing up.”
Devers heating up
Rafael Devers pummeled his 16th home run of the season in the second inning on Tuesday, his second in as many days. The ball was estimated to have traveled 467 feet, the longest home run of his career.
“‘He’s understanding who he is in the lineup and that they’re going to pitch around him certain times,” said Cora. “He’s hunting for pitches in the middle of a zone. The good thing is that he’s taking his walks. I do believe he’s been able to catch up with the fastball and then drive it the other way.”
Devers finished 2 for 4 with a double and the homer. He has a .285/.368/.559 line with 16 homers. Back in the swing
Triston Casas (right rib cage strain) underwent an MRI Tuesday. Following Tuesday’s loss, Cora said that Casas is expected to begin swinging this week. The team will have more details on Wednesday . . . Jarren Duran’s 14-game hitting streak was snapped after an 0 for 5 that included two strikeouts. Duran had the second-longest active streak in the AL heading into the game, behind the Rays’ Yandy Diaz (17 games). Connor Wong, who is on paternity leave, currently has a 13-game hitting streak . . . Liam Hendriks (Tommy John surgery) threw his first bullpen of the year on Tuesday . . . Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay threw out the first pitch . . . The Blue Jays reinstated shortstop Bo Bichette (calf) from the injured list . . . Red Sox infield prospect Yoelin Cespedes was promoted from the Florida Coast League to Single A Salem . . . The WooSox activated lefthander Joely Rodriguez.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox - June 26, 2024 Author: Mark Ruelle Last Updated: June 25, 2024 Game Start: 7:10pm EST
The Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox wrap up their three-game weekday series at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays have fallen off the pace in the AL East and came into this series in last place in the division. The Red Sox have been playing their best baseball of the season and are in the thick of the wildcard race. The pitching matchup on Wednesday will be Blue Jays' righty Yuriel Rodriguez (0-2, 5.94) taking on Red Sox righty Kutter Crawford (3-7, 3.59). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
Jays Headed for a Breakup? The Toronto Blue Jays are looking like they'll be sellers at the trade deadline this season as this roster continues to underperform. The Jays are in last place in the AL East despite a solid rotation and stars like Vlad Guerrero and Bo Bichette in their everyday lineup. The Blue Jays came into Fenway after being swept by the Red Sox last weekend and followed that up by getting swept in Cleveland over the weekend. The Blue Jays blew a 6-2 lead on Monday night and lost their 7th straight game, 7-6. On Tuesday, the Blue Jays rebounded from a 2-0 early deficit to score seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by a 2-run blast by George Springer and rolled to a 9-4 win. Springer was 3-for-5 on the night.
The Blue Jays will turn to righty Yariel Rodriguez in the series finale against the Red Sox. Rodriguez has spent a significant amount of time on the injured list this season and has made just five starts thus far with a record of 0-2 and an ERA of 5.94. Rodriguez has allowed 21 hits in 16.2 innings pitched with a WHIP of 1.92. He has walked 11 and struck out 17 this season. In his first start off of the IL, Rodriguez couldn't get out of the second innings against the Guardians. He allowed two hits and four runs while walking four in just 1.1 innings of work in a 7-1 Blue Jays's loss.
Key Injuries: RP Yimi Garcia, RP Jordan Romano, SP Ricky Tiedemann, and SP Alek Manoah are out.
Speedy Sox The Red Sox have seemingly hit their stride of late with a lineup full of young, speedy, and interchangeable players. The lineup centers around All-Star 3B Rafael Devers and features youngsters like Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyar Abreu, and David Hamilton. Add to that mix veterans like Jared Duran and Tyler O'Neill and the Sox seem to have found a winning formula. The Red Sox took two of three over the weekend in Cincinnati to go a season-high six games over .500. The Sox bounced back from a 6-2 deficit on Monday night to pick up a 7-6 win on a walk-off single by red-hot Jared Duran. On Tuesday night, starter Brayan Bellow was roughed up for seven runs in less than three innings of work as part of a 9-4 loss. Rafael Devers and Tyler O'Neill homered in the loss.
The Red Sox send righty Kutter Crawford to the hill in the series finale with the Blue Jays. Crawford got off to a hot start this season but has struggled over the course of his last five starts. On the season, Crawford is 3-7 in 16 starts including eight quality starts. He has allowed 78 hits in 92.2 innings of work while striking out 95 and walking 28. Crawford has had trouble giving up the long ball lately, coughing up 13 now on the season, including five in his last two starts. He has an ERA of 3.59 and a WHIP of 1.14. In his last start, Crawford allowed five hits in 6.1 innings of work while allowing five runs and striking out seven batters.
Key Injuries: 1B Triston Casas and 2B Vaughn Grissom are out.
Blue Jays at Red Sox Wednesday, at 7:10 PM EST Partly Cloudy It's expected to be 84° F with a 32% chance of precipitation and 10 MPH wind blowing out in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com

Blue Jays chase series win in finale vs. Red Sox FLM
The Toronto Blue Jays will look to build off an emphatic end to their seven-game losing streak and win the rubber match of their three-game series against the host Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
Toronto ended its ugly slide with a 9-4 victory on Tuesday, totaling 11 hits while putting the game way out of reach with a seven-run third inning.
George Springer homered as part of a three-hit game, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in four runs on the strength of two doubles.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider noted that the daily grind may have helped his club through the rough stretch, which had been winless since June 16 before Tuesday.
"You're sitting in a hotel and you're thinking about (the loss) and you get here and you kind of just start your day. You do it again the next day, no matter what," Schneider said. "So I think it's more of a blessing."
The Blue Jays also got a boost from shortstop Bo Bichette after a stint on the 10-day injured list (calf). He went 0-for-4 but walked and scored a run Tuesday.
"You want who has been one of your best hitters over the years -- and will probably be that at the end of the year -- getting up more and facing good pitching late," Schneider said of Bichette's return.
Toronto's Yariel Rodríguez (0-2, 5.94 ERA) will take the mound on Wednesday. The right-hander remains in search of his first career MLB win and will look to bounce back after lasting just 1 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) in a 7-1 loss last Friday at Cleveland.
Rodriguez was pulled in the midst of a second inning in which the Blue Jays threw 70 pitches, the first team to do so since 2014.
The 27-year-old will make his first career start against Boston and just his second since returning from the 15-day injured list (thoracic spine inflammation). He had made four rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo.
Rafael Devers and Tyler O'Neill each hit a home run for Boston on Tuesday, but the big inning against Brayan Bello was too much to overcome.
Devers was 2-for-4 and added a double alongside a 467-foot shot that was the longest home run of his career. It was the second time he has gone deep in as many games.
"I was proud of the way we continued to compete," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.
Boston right-hander Kutter Crawford (3-7, 3.59 ERA) is coming off a 5-2 loss at Cincinnati on Friday, when he allowed five runs (three earned) while striking out seven and working into the seventh inning.
Crawford had worked six complete frames in four consecutive outings prior to his last in which he totaled five hits allowed across 6 1/3 innings against the Reds.
He allowed solo home runs in each of the first three innings, and the Reds added on with two unearned runs thanks to errors after he exited the game.
"It means a lot for (Cora) to run me out there in that situation," Crawford said of working deep into his last start. "Obviously, it didn't go as we planned, but him sending me out there, it shows he's got trust in me, and I appreciate that a lot."
Crawford is 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in three career starts against Toronto. The victory came on July 1, 2023, at Rogers Centre.
Tuesday's six-inning relief outing by Josh Winckowski should set up Boston's bullpen for Wednesday's game

Game 81: Blue Jays at Red Sox lineups and notesBy Andrew Mahoney Globe Staff,Updated June 26, 2024, 45 minutes ago Despite dropping a 9-4 decision last night, the Red Sox will have a chance to post a fifth consecutive series win in tonight’s rubber match with Toronto. They never really stood a chance in Tuesday’s loss thanks to another rough outing for Brayan Bello. who was knocked around for seven runs in just 2⅓ innings. The silver lining? Josh Winckowski ate up six innings in a relief appearance, giving the rest of the bullpen a day off. So at least they’ve got that going for them, which is nice. With a win, the Sox would improve to 13-9-4 in series play, and 7-4-2 at Fenway, as well as 5-0-3 in their last eight. After tonight’s game, the Sox will have Thursday off before hosting the Padres for a three-game series beginning Friday. Kutter Crawford will be on the mound for tonight’s finale. Here is a preview. Lineups BLUE JAYS (36-43): TBA Pitching: RHP Yariel Rodríguez (0-2, 5.94 ERA) RED SOX (43-37): Jarren Duran (L) CF David Hamilton (L) SS Wilyer Abreu (L) RF Rafael Devers (L) 3B Rob Refsnyder (R) LF Masataka Yoshida (L) DH Enmanuel Valdez (L) 2B Dominic Smith (L) 1B Reese McGuire (L) C Pitching: RHP Kutter Crawford (3-7, 3.59 ERA) Time: 7:10 p.m. TV, radio: NESN, WEEI-FM 93.7 Blue Jays vs. Crawford: Bo Bichette 2-9, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 4-9, Danny Jansen 1-4, Kevin Kiermaier 0-3, Isiah Kiner-Falefa 1-9, Alejandro Kirk 0-3, George Springer 4-9, Daulton Varsho 0-3 Red Sox vs. Rodríguez: Has not faced any Boston batters Stat of the day: The Red Sox are 21-4 when hitting multiple home runs this season. Shortest start of Bello's career
5 more years of this shit
His Line
2.1/ 5/7/7/3bb/ 2k/ 52-29
era up to 5.55
horseshit
Bello has had a disappointing season, but we have to remember that he's still very inexperienced and is still developing. Despite the poor results this year, I think it was absolutely the right move to lock him up when they did. I am confident that Bello will figure it out soon. Obviously, not happy about losing the game, but it happens. Hopefully we win the series tonight and all will be good.

‘He saved us:’ Red Sox pitcher (8 Ks) just recalled a bright spot in loss
Sometimes in losses, these things go unrecognized. But Wincowski deserves a lot of credit for saving the pen last night.

Red Sox rain delay: Game vs. Blue Jays halted in 2nd inning Wednesday
Published: Jun. 26, 2024, 7:40 p.m.

Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON — The Red Sox have largely avoided weather-related issues at Fenway Park this season. Wednesday night was another story.
Wednesday’s Red Sox-Blue Jays game is in a rain delay after umpires put a temporary stop to play with one out in the top of the first inning and Danny Jansen at bat facing righty Kutter Crawford. The teams both failed to score in the first inning; Crawford has just issued a one-out walk to Davis Schneider and had a 0-1 count on Jansen was play was halted.
“Attention fans,” the video board read. “The game is being delayed due to weather in the area. Further updates will be provided when available. Thank you for your patience.”
It’s unclear when the game will restart. According to the National Weather Service, there’s potential rain in the forecast throughout the night.
“Showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 1am and 4am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog after 8pm. Low around 67. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.”
The Sox and Jays are playing the rubber game of a three-game series after splitting the first two. The Red Sox have Thursday off but Toronto is scheduled to open a home series against the Yankees at Rogers Centre.

Tyler Milliken ⚾️ @tylermilliken_ Josh Winckowski will start for the Red Sox on Sunday and Brayan Bello will be pushed back to Wednesday, per @chriscotillo
Bello will have a week to get back on track between outings. Marlins and A’s will be who faces next, so hopefully he can find some momentum after this.
Curious to see more of Winckowski’s new cutter.
