Red Sox game in Minnesota postponed because of safety concerns following police shooting By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated April 12, 2021, 1 hour ago
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins postponed Monday afternoon’s game against the Red Sox for safety purposes following a police shooting in a Minneapolis suburb Sunday night.
Daunte Wright, 20, was shot and killed by a police offer in Brooklyn Center, Minn., 10 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
“Out of respect for the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Brooklyn Center and following the additional details in this evolving situation, the Minnesota Twins have decided it is in the best interests of our fans, staff, players and community to not play today’s game,” the team said in a statement.
“The decision was made by the Minnesota Twins after consultation with Major League Baseball and local and state officials.
“The Minnesota Twins organization extends its sympathies to the family of Daunte Wright.”
No details on rescheduling were immediately available.
The shooting occurred as former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is being tried for murder in the death of George Floyd last May, a trial that is taking place at the Hennepin County Government Center less than a mile from Target Field.
Twins president Dave St. Peter said the decision was “rooted in safety” for fans, both teams, and Twins employees, given the heightened tensions in the city.
Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said the decision was discussed with Red Sox, who supported it. The Red Sox team hotel is outside of the downtown area.

#RedSox-Twins postponed on Monday. Rest of series TBD.
Twins president Dave St. Peter -- 'Based on the events of the last 24 hours, and as information has started to come to light, playing a baseball game today felt a little less important.'
Cora said the #RedSox were already discussing different pitching plans due to the upcoming forecast in Minneapolis.
Cora, in Spanish, said Martin Perez would still be able to make his start if Tuesday's game is played. #RedSox
Cora said Perez and J.A. Happ were playing catch but had yet to go to the bullpen. He was in the dugout 30 minutes prior to first pitch as usual. #RedSox
Cora said this Minnesota series was talked about during spring training. The #RedSox knew it would be played in the midst of the Derek Chauvin trial.
'It's not that it's uncomfortable, but it's out there. We knew that we were going to come here around this time.'
Cora said he's had social justice conversations with his family, particularly over the last year while he was out of baseball.
'The game is the game. There are more important things than the game.' #RedSox
Cora said the #RedSox are staying outside Minneapolis.
Cora -- 'They have to stay in the hotel. We had a meeting planned for tonight -- not for this situation. We'll address it. We have a Zoom call late. We'll talk not only about this situation, but others.' #RedSox
