Red Sox @ Braves Tuesday, 15th June 2021 720pm @ Truist Park
E-rod 5-4/6.03
Was awful again in his last start vs the Astros as he allowed 6 runs over 4 IP. In 12 starts this season he is 5-0/3.82 in the first 6 games and is 0-4/8.49 since.
Davidson 0-0/1.53
In 3 starts this season, he has impressed with a 1.53 ERA over 17 IP. He has allowed just 3 runs on 10 hits and has 14 k's
Braves hoping Ronald Acuna Jr. back as they face Red Sox
The Atlanta Braves are hopeful that slugging right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. will be back in the lineup on Tuesday when they host the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a two-game series.
Acuna left Sunday's game against Miami in the fifth inning with right pectoral tightness. He seemed to suffer the injury after taking a big swing during his second at-bat.
"He could have kept going -- he wanted to keep going," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. "I just want to err on the side of caution. I don't see this lingering. It wasn't something we wanted to mess with."
Acuna has reached base safely in 22 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors. His next home run will be the 100th of his career. Acuna is batting .282 with 18 homers, 39 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
The Braves snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday by beating the Marlins 6-4. Atlanta was 2-4 on the road trip, with three of the losses by one run and two of them on walkoffs. The Red Sox beat Toronto 2-1 on Monday to complete a 4-4 homestand.
A pair of left-handers will oppose each other in the series opener -- Atlanta's Tucker Davidson (0-0, 1.53 ERA) vs. Boston's Eduardo Rodriguez (5-4, 6.03)
Davidson will be making his fourth start and third since joining the rotation on a full-time basis. In the last two games, Davidson has combined to pitch 11 2/3 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and six walks. He worked six shutout innings against the Phillies in his last start on Wednesday but did not receive a decision.
"His stuff was live, he was throwing strikes," Snitker said. "His slider has become a real pitch for him. He was very aggressive and threw a lot of strikes. It was a very impressive outing."
Davidson made his big-league debut in 2020 against Boston and took a loss after being tagged for seven runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings.
Rodriguez, who won his first four starts of the season, is seeking his first win since May 7 when he beat Baltimore. He received a no decision in his last two outings, but has an 8.10 ERA in June. In his most recent start on Thursday against Houston, Rodriguez allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
"Missing my spots, that's what I think has been changing the last couple of starts," Rodriguez said. "It's just something I need to work on. Finally, I've got my velocity back. I just need to work on hitting my spots. That's what's happening now."
Rodriguez did not face the Braves earlier this season. His only start against Atlanta came in 2018 when he beat the Braves after allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
The Red Sox finally got a solid effort from a starter on Monday when Nathan Eovaldi threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings. In their previous six games, the Boston starters were 0-4 with a 12.00 ERA (32 runs in 24 innings).
"It's been a horrible week for us, pitching-wise," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "For us to keep going and stay where we are, we have to pitch."
The Braves and Red Sox split a two-game series in Boston in May.

Injuries & Roster Moves: Sox add RHP Ríos June 14th, 2021
Keep track of the Red Sox recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. ROSTER MOVES
June 14: Acquired RHP Yacksel Ríos for cash considerations Ríos, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Friday, joins his fourth MLB team in his fifth season. The 27-year-old (who turns 28 on June 27) allowed one run in each of his three one-inning relief appearances for Seattle this year. Since 2019, he has allowed 20 runs (17 earned) in 20 big league innings.
June 14: Promoted INF Michael Chavis from Triple-A Worcester Chavis was previously optioned to Worcester after compiling a .758 OPS over 11 games with the Red Sox. In Triple-A, he posted a .737 OPS in 19 games, but he’s been hot lately: He’s 9-for-19 (.474) with a double and three home runs in his past five games.
June 14: Designate RHP Ryan Weber for assignment Weber’s contract had been selected from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, and the 30-year-old proceeded to allow 11 earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in a tough loss. In 89 1/3 career innings with Boston over the past three seasons, Weber posted a 5.54 ERA.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Marlins makeup could be part of Boston’s recent pitching malaise By Julian Benbow Globe Staff,Updated June 14, 2021, 8:18 p.m.
If Red Sox manager Alex Cora had to pick a day this season when it would have been nice to have another starter at his disposal, it would’ve been last Monday’s makeup against the Miami Marlins.
“There was a spot probably this week,” Cora said. “I’ll keep it at that.”
The Sox are still trying to get back on track after returning to Fenway to play the Marlins, coming off a seven-game road trip through Houston and New York. The scheduling was inconvenient, costing the pitching staff a day of rest and preventing Cora from being able to reset the bullpen.
The Sox have given up 54 runs in their next seven games, including Monday’s 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays — a marked change from the 18 surrendered in a blowout Sunday loss. The makeup created a stretch of 17 straight games for the Sox, all against teams that made the playoffs last year.
“The schedule hasn’t been that bad,” Cora said. “I just feel that this stretch with that Monday — and this is not about the organization or MLB or whoever made the decision to play Monday — but as you guys know, and you guys feel the same way, that week ending with a Sunday night game in New York, coming in and playing [Miami], and then going through that stretch, it’s not easy. It’s not easy for the players. It’s not easy for you guys.”
Cora has had to exhaust his options in the rotation. The depth that the Sox thought they had coming into the season hasn’t been there since Tanner Houck was shut down in May with a sore flexor muscle. Cora said Houck is progressing, but won’t return soon.
“The next step is pitching to hitters,” Cora said. “So he’s getting closer. But we’re not talking about seven days or not this week, let’s put it that way.”
The organization had planned to use prospects Thad Ward and Bryan Mata as depth options, but they both underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.
“That was part of the depth project, right? Those guys are very capable and, coming into the season, that was a strong suit of our pitching staff, right, having the five guys here, plus the other three capable guys — and obviously thinking about Chris [Sale] later on,” Cora said. “But there’s big-league teams that got hit at the big-league level, and we got hit in our minor league level.”
The Sox can see the light at the end of the tunnel with an off day on Thursday. Until then, they’ll have to push through.
“The whole thing, 162 games is real, man, that’s real,” Cora said. “And we’re going through a stretch right here that, schedule-wise, it hasn’t been easy. But I think everybody in this league goes through this. And we’re getting to a point, schedule-wise, that we’re going to feel better, you know — Thursday off, Monday off — so that’s very important. Now we don’t have the luxury, but we are three days away to kind of reset, and then be at full force.” Red Sox add reliever Yacksel Rios
The Red Sox traded cash considerations to the Seattle Mariners for right-hander Yacksel Rios. Rios, a native of Cora’s hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico, signed a minor-league contract with Tampa Bay in February. He played 12 games in Triple-A Durham, giving up one earned run in 13⅔ innings, before being traded to Seattle on June 4.
Rios made three appearances for the Mariners, with hitters batting .385 against him (five hits, three earned runs) in three innings.
To make room on the roster, right-hander Ryan Weber was designated for assignment. Weber made his first 2021 Red Sox appearance in Sunday’s blowout loss. He gave up 11 runs, including four home runs, in 5⅔ innings. Weber is 2-2 with a 4.63 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) for Worcester this season.
To fill Weber’s spot on Monday, the Sox recalled infielder Michael Chavis for his third big-league stint of the season. In 11 games, Chavis has started five times at second base and twice as first, hitting .273 with one home run, four doubles, seven runs scored, and two RBIs. Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers on top
Major League Baseball announced its first fan-voting update for the All-Star Game, which will take place on July 13 at Coors Field in Denver. Two Red Sox lead their respective positions, both by a wide margin.
Rafael Devers led American League third basemen with 451,042 votes, more than double former Red Sox prospect Yoán Moncada of Chicago (215,295), while Xander Bogaerts led shortstops with nearly twice the votes (502,629) of Toronto’s Bo Bichette (252,479).
Bogaerts has made two All-Star Games, starting in 2016, while Devers is seeking his first appearance. Should the voting hold, they would be the first pair of teammates to start on the left side of the infield since Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees in 2011.
Votes will be tallied until June 24, at which point the top three at each position (and top nine in the outfield) will advance to a second phase, in which totals will be cleared and fans will again vote to determine each starter. Thin crowds
Monday was the ninth game at Fenway Park since it was opened to full capacity on May 29, and the 20,070 in attendance was the smallest in that span. Those nine games have averaged 23,378 fans, without a game eclipsing the 26,000 mark. Fenway seats a maximum of 37,755 for night games. “I do believe people really like this team, but we are still in the middle of a pandemic,” Cora said. “People are going to make their choices to come here and be around a lot of people, or they are going to stay home because they don’t feel safe. I think that’s more about what’s happening in the world than the Red Sox, Fenway, and the brand of baseball we are playing” . . . The Royals placed Andrew Benintendi on the 10-day disabled list with a right rib injury. The Sox sent Benintendi to the Royals in February in a three-team deal with the Mets . . . Single-game tickets to all remaining Worcester Red Sox home games will go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday at WooSox.com or at the Polar Park Ticket Office.

Peter Gammons @pgammo 30m RT @smittyonmlb: Just did some quick math. Red Sox's Rafael Devers was hitting just .165 (17-for-103) against fastballs on June 2. Since then, he has gone 15-for-41 (.366) and has increased his average against heaters by 57 points.

Red Sox at Braves Series Preview
Looking ahead to the week’s quick two-game set in Atlanta. By Matt_Collins@MattRyCollins Jun 15, 2021, 12:01pm EDT
SB Nation Blog
Talking Chop The opponent in one sentence
The Braves this year have been a disappointment, never quite finding their footing, but the talent on this roster is still very dangerous. Record
30-33 Head-to-head record
1-1 Trend
Down. The Braves had been looking like they were ready to right this ship for the early part of this month, but then things have started to trend back downhill more recently. They did win their last game on Sunday, but that was preceded by a four-game losing streak. Pitching Matchups
6/15: Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Tucker Davidson, 7:20 PM ET
It has been a rough week or two for the Red Sox rotation as a whole, but for Rodriguez it’s been a much longer stretch of subpar pitching. Boston’s lefty is simply getting hit around pretty much every time out, with his last start being up there with the worst of the bunch. He missed out on the Toronto series, but he was out there for the finale against Houston. And while the Red Sox did win that game, Rodriguez allowed six runs over 4 2⁄3 innings with three walks and five strikeouts. He’s allowed at least one homer in each of his last four starts, and has made it beyond five innings just once since May 13. The Red Sox need some stability in the rotation right now, and Rodriguez figuring things out would be a massive step in that direction.
Davidson is a former 19th round pick and one of the better pitching prospects in the Braves system. The southpaw made his debut last summer for one start and has made three more this season, putting up strong results with a 1.53 ERA. He does a good job of keeping the ball on the ground and just inducing weak contact generally, which has allowed him to keep the ball in the yard. On the other hand, his stuff is solid at best and there are some control issues, so the Red Sox do have a path to beating him if they’re patient and strike when the opportunities arise. This will be the first time Davidson will meet an opponent out of his division this season. Boston did face him in his lone start last season, knocking him out in the second inning thanks to a seven-run outburst, albeit with five of the runs being unearned. The lefty will feature a fastball that sits in the low-to-mid 90s along with a slider and the occasional curveball.
6/16: Garrett Richards vs. Ian Anderson, 7:20 PM ET (ESPN for out-of-market)
Richards has been performing a highwire act for his last handful of outings, and while the results have been mostly solid the Red Sox are probably looking for more of a stress-free outing this time around. Last time out he kept the team in the game, allowing four runs while pitching into the sixth, but he also gave up 11 hits while walking two more. He’s allowed at least 10 hits and walks combined in four of his last five outings, putting a whole lot of high-stress innings on an arm that already had workload concerns as it was. Atlanta is not an easy lineup, and is in fact one of the teams to reach double-digit baserunners in this recent stretch. They had six hits and four walks against him the last time these two teams faced off, but they only managed three runs over 5 2⁄3 innings. Richards will be looking for better command and just generally a better time against this lineup this time around.
Anderson is not just a top prospect in the Braves system but one of the very best young pitchers in the game today. He’s also had some success already in the majors, putting up a sub-2.00 ERA in six starts last season in his first taste of the bigs and following that up with a 3.26 ERA through 12 starts this season. The big righty will have some control problems that should force the Red Sox to show off their patience, but he also comes at you with big stuff that is both easy to swing through and hard to square up even if you do make contact. Anderson is coming off one of his best starts of the season as well, tossing seven scoreless innings against the Phillies last week. The Red Sox did get a look at him last year, scoring two runs over six innings in his second career start. Anderson will feature a fastball that sits in the mid-90s along with a changeup and a curveball. Old Friends
Pablo Sandoval is not really considered a friend by many Red Sox fans, but he is somehow still hanging around the league, largely as a bench piece who can come in late in games and come through in big pinch hitting spots.
Notable Position Players
Ronald Acuña Jr. is, for my money, the most exciting player in the game. He brings everything to the table, with massive power, good plate discipline, great athleticism, and a swag you can’t teach. He’ll be a problem at the top of this lineup for both of these games.
Freddie Freeman is arguably a better pure hitter than Acuña, showing off some of the best plate discipline in the game along with a propensity to make hard contact. That said, BABIP issues have made him more good than great so far this season.
Ozzie Albies is a tremendous third wheel after those first two names, and cannot be forgotten at the top of this lineup. The second baseman hits for surprising power for his stature, and makes plenty of contact to boot.
Austin Riley has been the big breakout in the Braves lineup this year, tapping into his raw power enough to mask the swing and miss issues that exist as well.
Abraham Almonte has been playing a lot of late, and is boosting his line with a huge walk rate. The Red Sox should be looking to make him swing the bat.
Dansby Swanson has been a bit disappointing at the plate this year, struggling with his plate discipline, which in turn has made it more difficult for him to tap into his power.
William Contreras has been solid behind the dish, and while he will strike out enough his power has been able to make up the gap so far this season.
Ender Inciarte is all defense at this point, as he rarely hits the ball with any authority when he’s at the plate. Bullpen Snapshot
Will Smith has not been good as the Braves close this year looking at his ERA approaching 5.00, but the peripherals tell a much different story and he should not be underestimated.
Chris Martin has not pitched a ton this year, but he’s using his excellent command and control to thrive despite lackluster stuff so far.
A.J. Minter is a tough lefty who will run into some command problems here and there but also will miss a ton of bats in the process. Injuries
Marcell Ozuna originally went to the injured list with fractured fingers, but then shortly after that was arrested on domestic violence charges that will likely keep him off the field for the rest of the year, and potentially well beyond that.
Mike Soroka tore his Achilles last summer and has had some setbacks along the way, leading to fear he may not pitch at all this season. But the Braves are still holding out hope he’ll return later in the year.
Travis d’Arnaud had surgery on a torn ligament in his thumb earlier this season, but the Braves are hoping to get him back at some point in the final six weeks or so of the season.
Huascar Ynoa fractured his hands after punching the bench in the dugout in May, and will be out for at least another month and probably a bit longer.
Touki Toussaint went down with a shoulder injury at the end of camp, but he’s getting ready to start a rehab assignment soon.
Grant Dayton hit the injured list with a shoulder issue earlier this month, and the extent of the injury is still not entirely clear.
Alex Jackson was just about set to end his rehab and rejoin the team before he hurt his finger, causing him to miss a little more time. Weather Forecast
Things should be able to go off smoothly down in Atlanta for these next two days, although Tuesday is a bit of a question mark. There are some thunderstorms in the area that night, but it appears they should hold off long enough to allow this game to proceed without delay or pause.

ATLANTA -- The Red Sox just spent more than a week at home, going 4-4 on their eight-game homestand. At 40-27, the Sox are now three games back of the Rays in the American League East and in sole possession of one of two AL wild card spots.
Boston will now embark on a three-city, eight-game road trip to Atlanta, Kansas City and Tampa Bay before coming home late next week. First up are the Braves for a quick two-gamer in Atlanta. Here’s a preview: Boston Red Sox (40-27) vs. Atlanta Braves (30-33) · Truist Park · Atlanta, GA
SERIES SCHEDULE (and TV information):
Tue. June 15, 7:20 p.m. ET -- NESN
Wed. June 16, 7:20 p.m. ET -- NESN / ESPN
HOW TO WATCH:
Tue. June 15, 7:20 p.m. ET -- NESN (Channel finder: Comcast Xfinity, Verizon Fios, Spectrum/Charter, Optimum/Altice, DIRECTV, Dish, AT&T U verse, fuboTV and Sling) · Live stream: fuboTV, MLB.tv (Free Game of the Day)
Wed. June 16, 7:20 p.m. ET -- NESN / ESPN (Channel finder: Comcast Xfinity, Verizon Fios, Spectrum/Charter, Optimum/Altice, DIRECTV, Dish, AT&T U verse, fuboTV and Sling) · Live stream: fuboTV, MLB.tv (out of market), ESPN+ (subscription)
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
The Braves went 35-25 and won the National League East for the third straight year in 2020, but they’re off to a but of an uneven start in 2021 and sit in third place -- 5 ½ games behind the first-place Mets -- in the division entering Tuesday. Atlanta is without a few key pieces, as catcher Travis d’Arnaud (torn thumb ligament) outfielder Marcell Ozuna (dislocated two fingers and domestic violence arrest pending league review) are both out of the lineup and righty Mike Soroka (Achilles) has not pitched this year.
Atlanta has a strong offensive club, ranking ninth in the majors in OPS (.744), 14th in average (.236) and third in homers (93). Four Braves -- Ronald Acuña Jr. (18), Freddie Freeman (15), Austin Riley (12) and Dansby Swanson (10) have hit double-digit homers. On the pitching side, the Braves have middling numbers, including a 4.34 team ERA (19th in baseball), .244 opponent average (18th) and 78 homers allowed (tied for 12th).
PITCHING PROBABLES:
Tuesday, 7:20 p.m. ET -- LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (5-4, 6.03 ERA) vs. LHP Tucker Davidson (0-0, 1.53 ERA)
Wednesday, 7:20 p.m. ET -- RHP Garrett Richards (4-4, 4.09 ERA) vs. RHP Ian Anderson (4-3, 3.26 ERA)
THREE SOX TO WATCH:
Eduardo Rodriguez
Rodriguez had a solid start in the Bronx on June 5 but went right back to struggling last time out against the Astros, allowing six runs on six hits in 4 ⅔ innings as his season ERA soared to 6.03. He missed the Braves last time but will try to post his first quality start since April 25 in the opener Tuesday.
Josh Taylor
Taylor is on a phenomenal run, as he has not allowed a run in 18 appearances (dating back to April 30). In that span, the lefty reliever has given up just seven hits while striking out 18 hitters in 14 innings. He has worked his way into a high-leverage role alongside Adam Ottavino and Matt Barnes at the back end of Alex Cora’s bullpen.
Michael Chavis
Chavis, a native of Marietta, Ga., was called up Sunday and is expected to be on the roster to face his hometown team. Though Chavis has just a .737 OPS in 19 games for the WooSox this season, he’s always a threat to add pop when he’s in the lineup.
SERIES NOTES:
The Red Sox and Braves split a two-game set, one game apiece, from May 25-26. In 2020, the Braves took four of six games but the Red Sox won two of three in a season-ending series at Truist Park. Boston is 8-2 against the National League this year. After the trip to Atlanta, the club’s next interleague series won’t be until July 9-11 (vs. Phillies). The Red Sox are 271-182 (.598) all time against the National League, the highest Interleague winning percentage in the majors. The Red Sox are 7-0-1 in their last 8 series in Atlanta, dating back to 2006 and are 17-4 with a +58 run differential in those games (123-65). Red Sox pitchers are hitless in their last 32 plate appearances. Boston leads the majors with 23 come-from-behind wins this season. The largest lead the Sox have relinquished in a loss is two runs, done only four times. The Sox are in the midst of playing a game on 17 consecutive days, all against teams that made the 2020 postseason. They are 8-7 so far with the games in Atlanta ending the stretch. At 20-10, the Red Sox have the second-best road record in the majors.
UP NEXT:
Boston’s current road trip is one of two three-city trips the club will embark on this season. The other will be from July 30 to Aug. 8 when the Red Sox visit Tampa Bay, Detroit and Toronto (in Buffalo). Here’s the schedule for the remainder of this trip:
Thu. June 17 -- OFF DAY
Fri. June 18 - Sun. June 20 -- @ Royals (3)
Mon. June 21 -- OFF DAY
Tue. June 22 - Thu. June 24 -- @ Rays (3)

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 12m Alex Cora will join us on Zoom shortly. #RedSox
Cora on the #MLB/baseball substance memo issued today -- 'I had a meeting today with all my peers.'
'Managers, they have questions about how and why this is happening or what's allowed and what's not. It's pretty clear.' #RedSox
Cora on specifically including sunscreen/rosin in the memo -- 'I was surprised, but they have the information. They can back it up with the data and the information they have.'
'For them to do it this way, they were very clear.' #RedSox
Cora -- 'I'm coming from a suspension. I know how embarrassing that is and how tough that is.'
'Being suspended is hell. You don't want to go through that.' #RedSox
