Red Sox Notebook: Danny Santana gets another start at first base, struggling Bobby Dalbec on the bench
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald July 20, 2021 at 5:44 p.m.
With more than half of the season in the books, Bobby Dalbec appears to have fallen out of favor.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora started Danny Santana at first base again on Tuesday, his second consecutive start since getting recalled from a rehab assignment on Monday. Before that, Christian Arroyo got the start at first base on Sunday before he went down with a hamstring injury.
Asked if the Sox were going to platoon Santana and Dalbec going forward, Cora said, “I’m not going to go there. We’ll match it up.”
After starting 21 of the Sox’ 28 games (75%) in June, Dalbec has started just eight of the Red Sox’ 15 games (53%) in July.
“We do believe that certain matchups are good for Danny,” Cora said. “The quality of the at-bats yesterday was solid. He feels good about himself physically. He’s in a good spot swing-wise. It feels like he was making progress before he got hurt, not too many swings and misses. He was hitting the ball hard.
“We’ll keep Michael (Chavis) involved and Bobby involved, but Danny, he’s a guy, when he gets on a roll, he can hit the ball in the air, he can hit it out, he goes the other way. So we’ll take it day by day.”
There’s no question Dalbec’s season has been disappointing.
He showed consistent power in a 23-game sample last fall, and again in Grapefruit League action this spring. But with almost four months of the regular season in the books, Dalbec is hitting just .216 with a .659 OPS. He has 10 home runs in 266 plate appearances and 12 walks to go with 99 strikeouts.
Of the 182 players with at least 250 plate appearances, he ranks 181st with a strikeout rate of 37%. His 0.12 walk-to-strikeout ranks 180th.
“The one thing I didn’t expect was the strikeout to walk ratio,” Cora said. “I do believe this guy, he understands the strike zone. He wasn’t going to chase pitches, he was going to walk more. The swing and misses we knew was part of the equation, but there was also plate discipline.
“There’s not too many walks lately, right? I don’t think he’s walked in the month of July, and he only had three in June. So that part surprised me, because I do believe this guy knows the strike zone and he can walk.” Cooling the hype on Duran
Three games into Jarren Duran’s career and the Red Sox have been impressed, but Cora warned to cool the hype.
“I saw it back home in winter ball this year when he went down (to Puerto Rico) and played for Caguas,” Cora said. “I told these guys the story a few days ago, Opening Day, in a foreign country, with no fans in the middle of a pandemic, in a 9-0 game, his second at-bat he hits a groundball to short and he ran like a 4.0-flat to first. I had to turn off the TV and say, ‘you know what, this kid, he gets it.’ We had a few conversations. He came over to our neighborhood to have lunch. He gets it.
“To go to Yankee Stadium and put good at-bats, that’s part of who he is. He’s not going to deviate from who he is. He’s going to show up every day. One thing we have to be careful of is not to put this kid on a pedestal and all of a sudden call him the second coming of Johnny Damon or something like that. We have to take care of him. Obviously the hype will be there, but at the same time, we’ll keep him humble. I don’t think it’s going to be hard to keep him humble, because he’s a workaholic. He understands he’s here to help us win the game, not to establish himself at the big league level. And that’s a cool thing to have.” Verdugo ready to break out
Alex Verdugo’s hamstring injury has held him back at times this year, but Cora thinks Verdugo is about to bust out of a slump.
He had three walks Monday and “he’s getting close,” the manager said. “He’s not far off from taking off. Because when you start dominating the strike zone the way he did yesterday, good things are going to happen.”
Hitting coach Tim Hyers said teams have stopped throwing him fastballs up in the zone and Verdugo may have over-adjusted.
“Lefties have thrown him a lot of two-seamers down and in and he has hit a lot of ground balls off of lefties,” Hyers said. “And then they have expanded away. I think it’s also just a young player. There are times when you’re going to struggle. He’s just going through some period where you have to make the adjustment.
“The other thing is not trying to press and try and get three hits in one at-bat. He has been prone to do that and we have talked about it. Just getting back to what he does best. He has to use the whole field, no matter if it’s lefties or righties. Probably hitting the ball on the ground too much to the pull side, which is unusual for him.”

Duran quickly impresses Sox: 'He's fearless' July 20th, 2021 Jordan Horrobin
Jordan Horrobin @jordanhorrobin
Like some MLB newcomers, Jarren Duran felt lost. Not lost in the sense of struggling at the plate or in the field; he was, literally, lost.
“I’m still figuring out some of the facilities,” Duran said. “I swear at Yankee Stadium I kept walking out toward the bus because I couldn’t figure out which way the cage was. Every day I’d walk out and head toward the bus when the cage was the other way.”
Perhaps wandering Yankee Stadium without direction qualifies as a “welcome to the Majors” moment for Duran, Boston's No. 3 prospect. Just three games into his big league career, he’s added to that moment with his first hit (on Gerrit Cole’s first offering) and his first home run (to open the scoring against Toronto on Monday).
Duran may not have every stadium mapped out just yet, but he’s demonstrated that he belongs in them. He’s not afraid of baseball’s biggest stage.
“First of all, he’s fearless,” Red Sox hitting coach Tim Hyers said. “That’s the type of guy I like. He’s a guy that’s going to give us competitive at-bats. He’s obviously going to take some lumps, being a young player, but he’s a guy that is fearless, aggressive and can spark our lineup.”
How’s this for fearless? After facing Cole and the Yankees on the road in his debut, Duran was bumped up to the No. 2 spot in Boston’s lineup just two games later. Manager Alex Cora wanted to move J.D. Martinez down to maximize RBI opportunities, and Duran’s 70-grade speed made him an enticing option to promote.
Naturally, Duran delivered immediately -- albeit with power, not speed. He homered in his first at-bat on Monday night, staying with an outside fastball and driving it to left.
As for his place up high in Boston’s potent lineup, Duran isn’t reading into it too much. But he doesn’t have any fear filling the role of a No. 2 hitter, either.
“Just staying on my toes,” Duran said. “Who knows if I stay there or not? But wherever A.C. wants to put me, I’m going to do the best I can.” Jarren Duran's 1st career hit
Sox agree with 3rd-rounder McDonough Boston has agreed to terms with utility man Tyler McDonough, its third-round pick from the 2021 MLB Draft, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis. The club had not confirmed the report.
The deal is reportedly worth $831,100, which represents the full slot value of the No. 75 pick with which McDonough was selected.
Though McDonough was announced at the Draft as a second baseman, he also has experience playing third base, catcher and outfield. He finished his three-year college career with a .954 OPS, but the power numbers popped in 2021.
McDonough slugged .631 for N.C. State, with 15 homers, 21 doubles and a triple across 55 games. He reached safely in 53 of 55 games and made only two errors during the year.
The Red Sox still have many Draft picks left to sign, including No. 4 overall Marcelo Mayer. The deadline for teams to sign draftees is Aug. 1.

Red Sox’ game against Blue Jays rained out in Buffalo By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 20, 2021, 9:07 p.m.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Red Sox-Blue Jays matchup at Sahlen Field was postponed Tuesday because of inclement weather.
The game will be made up when the Red Sox go to Toronto for the first time since 2019 for a series Aug. 6-8 as part of a split doubleheader Saturday, Aug. 7.
It will be the finale of 23 major league games played this season at Sahlen Field, home of the Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate. The Blue Jays will return to Toronto July 30 for a homestand because the Canadian government granted the team an exemption to the US-Canada travel ban. Related: Chris Sale shines in rehab start for Portland Sea Dogs
Game 1 will begin at 3:07 p.m. and Game 2 at 7:07 p.m.
Red Sox starter Garrett Richards, who was scheduled to start Tuesday’s game, will be pushed back a day and will instead take the mound Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Tanner Houck, who was slated to be the Red Sox’ original starter Wednesday, will likely pitch Thursday against the Yankees at Fenway Park, but that’s to be determined.
The Sox went through their normal routine Tuesday afternoon, but after batting practice Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero turned to a couple of reporters and intimated that the forecast wasn’t promising.
The Red Sox came out of the All-Star break staring down 18 games on 18 consecutive days. But after the Yankees had their issues surrounding COVID-19 last Thursday, it gave the Sox an extra day of rest. The Sox then played a shortened six-inning contest vs. the Yankees the following day. Tuesday’s postponement gave the Sox yet another break.
The interesting part in all of this is Richards.
He hasn’t pitched since July 9 vs. the Phillies when he allowed three runs in five innings. Initially, Richards — who used rosin and sunscreen to get a better grip on the baseball — struggled to make an adjustment after Major League Baseball’s crackdown on sticky stuff. But in his last two outings, in which Richards allowed a combined five runs, has been the best he has looked.
“They have made adjustments and they’re doing a good job,” manager Alex Cora said of his pitching staff.

J.D. Martinez the key piece in Alex Cora’s lineup shuffle, and other observations By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 20, 2021, 11:16 p.m.
BUFFALO — The Red Sox poured in six homers at Sahlen Field Monday night against the Blue Jays.
Tuesday night, though, was a rainout.
The Sox (57-38) have a one-game lead in the American League East. Monday’s convincing 13-4 win was a solid response for the Sox after dropping their last two series to the Phillies and Yankees.
Here are some observations on the Sox.
▪ In the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday against the Yankees, in what would be an eventual 9-1 loss, manager Alex Cora pulled out a piece of paper and wrote down a different lineup. He had been thinking about it for a while, and after getting feedback from a number of people around the organization, Cora decided to make the switch.
He moved Alex Verdugo to the six spot, and put rookie Jarren Duran second in the order. Cora moved Martinez down to No. 5 from No. 3, and he flipped Rafael Devers to No. 4 and Bogaerts to No. 3.
Fans and media focused on Verdugo being moved from the two hole for Duran, but for Cora, that wasn’t his focus. He wanted to unlock Martinez, who he believed was missing out on RBI situations.
“I do believe that we can maximize J.D.,” Cora said Tuesday. “There was a thought process and I called a lot of people and got information. And our fifth spot has more RBI opportunities than our third spot.”
Cora then explained why he put Verdugo in the six hole.
“I would like somebody with experience hitting behind J.D. So it just happened to be Alex Verdugo.”
▪ Bobby Dalbec’s eight homers, .263 batting average, and .959 OPS last year seem like it was ages ago. After much (worthy) hype coming into this season, Dalbec has become a matchup guy, hitting against primarily lefthanders. Prior to Tuesday’s postponed contest, Dalbec was out of the lineup again with the Sox electing to go with Danny Santana.
The Sox knew that the swing and miss would be there for Dalbec. He’s currently hitting .216 with a 37.2 strikeout rate. Yet his inability to draw walks (.259 on-base percentage) and control the strike zone — something Dalbec was known for — has been a bit alarming, Cora indicated.
“The one thing that I didn’t expect was the strikeout-to-walk ratio,” Cora said. “I do believe this guy understands the strike zone. He wasn’t going to chase pitches. The swing and misses we knew was part of the equation, but also plate discipline. And there haven’t been too many walks lately.”
Since June 2, Dalbec has just three walks in 116 plate appearances. Bobby Dalbec is currently hitting .216.
▪ Verdugo is just 25. In reality, this is his first 162-game season as an everyday player.
Verdugo is hitting .250 since the start of June and .270 overall. He’s had to adjust to big league pitching with teams exploiting him with two-seamers down and in, resulting in a rollover grounders toward second. Additionally, pitchers have adjusted to the times. After MLB’s crackdown on sticky stuff, teams have stopped trying to employ fastballs at the top of the zone, a strength of Verdugo’s.
“Verdugo is one of the guys who benefited from the high fastball,” hitting coach Tim Hyers said. “He has the flat zone swing, it’s very level. He can attack pitches at the top of the zone and I think this year lefties are throwing a lot of two-seamers down and in and he’s had a lot of ground balls off lefties and then they’ve expanded away.”

Red Sox Notebook: Game with Blue Jays postponed
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: July 20, 2021 at 5:44 p.m. | UPDATED: July 20, 2021 at 7:47 p.m.
The Red Sox had their game with the Toronto Blue Jays postponed on Tuesday night due to thunderstorms in Buffalo, the temporary home of the Jays.
It’ll be made up as part of a split doubleheader in Toronto on Aug. 7.
But the Red Sox lineup they were going to use on Tuesday was a reminder of the team’s problems at first base.
With more than half of the season in the books, Bobby Dalbec appears to have fallen out of favor.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora was set to start Danny Santana at first base again on Tuesday, his second consecutive start since getting recalled from a rehab assignment on Monday. Before that, Christian Arroyo got the start at first base on Sunday before he went down with a hamstring injury.

Red Sox @ Blue Jays Wednesday 21 July 2021 7pm @ Sahlen Field
Richards 5-5/4.91
Garrett Richards yielded three runs in five innings Friday in a win over the Phillies. It's still hard to see any upside here with Richards' velocity and spin rate down, but at least he has kept the Red Sox in games his last two times out after struggling in his final four outings of June and he picked up a win tonight for the first time since May 19. It'd still be for the best if the Red Sox could replace him.
Robbie Ray 8-4/2.93
Robbie Ray recorded eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 scoreless innings on Friday in a win over the Rangers. Ray generated an eye-popping 17 swinging strikes, including 10 on his four-seam fastball, and finished with a sublime 36 percent CSW (called strikes plus whiffs). He scattered four hits and a pair of walks over six-plus frames. The 29-year-old left-hander has reverted back into a front-line starter for the Blue Jays, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his last 11 starts. He's also recorded four double-digit strikeout efforts during that span. He'll carry a sparkling 2.93 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 138/27 K/BB ratio across 107 1/3 innings (18 starts) into a home matchup against the Red Sox at Sahlen Field on Wednesday.
Red Sox, Jays to conclude shortened AL East series According to STATS
The Boston Red Sox and their shuffled lineup will be out to sweep the host Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night in what has been reduced to a two-game series in Buffalo.
The new-look lineup was a success Monday night when the Red Sox won the opener 13-4.
The same lineup, with rookie Jarren Duran batting second and J.D. Martinez and Alex Verdugo batting fifth and sixth respectively, was posted for the game Tuesday before a postponement because of thunderstorms.
Duran made the move pay off with his first major league home run, a two-run blast that started the scoring in an eight-run first inning on Monday.
"We made a lineup change and they made me look good," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.
"He just said that he was going to try some things out, moving pieces around," Duran said. "Who knows if I will stay there or not, but wherever AC wants to put me, I'm going to do the best I can."
Martinez, who usually bats third, was 4-for-4 with a walk, and Verdugo, who has been hitting second, had three walks in going 0-for-2.
The inspiration came to Cora during Boston's 9-1 loss to the Yankees in New York on Sunday.
"In the middle of the game, I wrote it down," Cora said. "We haven't been great offensively since we went to Oakland (July 2-4). I just felt like moving people around would relax a few guys, and I think the key also is getting those two guys in front of J.D. He's an RBI machine, and it just so happens he's been doing a good job throughout the season."
The postponed game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Aug. 7 at Toronto. The series finale on Wednesday will be the Blue Jays' final home game played in Buffalo. They have not played at Rogers Centre since 2019 because of COVID-19 restrictions. They will be allowed to return to Toronto on July 30.
Right-hander Garrett Richards (5-5, 4.91 ERA) will start for Boston, with left-hander Robbie Ray (8-4, 2.93) going for Toronto.
Richards is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts against the Blue Jays this season. He is 3-5 with a 5.26 ERA in 11 career games (nine starts) against them.
Ray won his only start this season against Boston. On June 13, he allowed three earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out 10 in six innings. In three career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox, he is 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA.
Boston leads the American League East, seven games ahead of Toronto, which is tied for third place. The teams meet nine more times through Aug. 8, so this series was considered an opportunity for Toronto.
"You know me: I don't put too much talk on one series," Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said. "We've got too many games to go. Any time you play your division, that's how it goes. They're all big games, but I'm not going to put much stock in (two) games. Hopefully, we start gaining some ground."
Toronto left-hander Anthony Kay, who allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings Monday, was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday. Catcher Alejandro Kirk (left hip flexor strain) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A. Right-hander T.J. Zeuch was designated for assignment.

Toronto has done a great job of fixing Robbie Ray's control. He's dominant, with control, and is death on LH hitters. RH hitters have fared a bit better, mostly because they can get the ball in the air and that has led to some home run issues for Ray (1.9 HR/9 vs. RHH).
