Red Sox Nation Stats @rsnstats · 5h #RedSox Manager Alex Cora on Nathan Eovaldi: "He didn't have command of his pitchers. It started off right away…Tonight he wasn't that far off, he just wasn't able to put those guys away with 2 strikes. No strikeouts, right? You don't see that often…You have to turn the page."
#RedSox Manager Cora on the bullpen: "Sawamura did an amazing job. [Barnes] was able to go there and compete and there were some positives there. Martín, he did an outstanding job. We stayed away from a lot of guys tonight and we'll be ready for tomorrow."

Pivetta 9-7/4.63
9-7 with a 4.63 ERA in 28 starts of 2021. 0-1 with a 14.73 ERA in 2 career games (1 start) vs NYY.
Yankees seek win to tie Red Sox in wild-card race According to STATS
A weekend with the potential to be season-defining could not have gotten off to a better start for the New York Yankees.
First, the club took care of its own business Friday night with an 8-3 victory over the host Boston Red Sox to kick off a high-stakes three-game series. With the win, the Yankees (87-67) moved within a game of the Red Sox (88-66) for the top wild card in the American League.
As an added bonus, the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Minnesota Twins later in the night, ensuring New York a two-game lead on the second wild card. The Seattle Mariners are also two games back.
"We're definitely aware, but if we take care of business it doesn't matter," Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton said of the standings picture. "If we get the win ourselves, then we're in the best position possible that we can control. So, we secure our win and then see what everyone else is doing."
New York gets the chance to tie its longtime rival for the top wild card in a late-afternoon showdown Saturday. The Yankees will send left-hander Nestor Cortes (2-2, 2.79 ERA) to the mound opposite Red Sox righty Nick Pivetta (9-7, 4.63).
The Yankees seek their fifth straight victory. The Red Sox look to bounce back from having a seven-game winning streak snapped with Friday's loss.
In that contest, Stanton slugged a three-run home run to blow the game open in the third inning, giving the visitors a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Stanton finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Gleyber Torres added three hits and a solo homer.
The two have been key to New York's rebound from a seven-game skid earlier this month. Stanton has six homers and 14 RBIs in his last 12 games, while Torres is riding a 10-game hitting streak.
For the Red Sox, the setback was just their 13th in their last 43 games at home.
"Right now, we are in a fight with a lot of teams around us, and (Saturday) we have to come out here and play a good game," said manager Alex Cora.
Rafael Devers was a bright spot with a three-run blast for his 35th home run of the season. Also encouraging was a scoreless inning pitched by former closer Matt Barnes, who punched out two as he continues to try to regain his All-Star form from the first half.
Pivetta gets the nod for Boston seeking his first victory since Aug. 13. He has allowed at least three runs in four of his last five outings, including three over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision versus the Baltimore Orioles last time out.
Pivetta was shelled for four runs over 1 2/3 innings in his lone start against the Yankees this season (Aug. 18). It was his second career appearance against the club.
Cortes will be making his first career start against the Red Sox after allowing 11 runs over 10 innings (9.90 ERA) across six relief appearances against Boston. He surrendered three runs in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Texas Rangers in his most recent performance.

Red Sox, Nathan Eovaldi don’t inspire confidence in likely preview of Wild Card game | Matt Vautour Published: 7:24 a.m.
By Matt Vautour | mvautour@masslive.com
BOSTON — It took three innings for all the positive energy, all the yellow uniform magic, that had been generated during the Red Sox’s recent seven-game win streak to evaporate Friday. In their series opener against the New York Yankees, Boston fell flat on its face, 8-3, at Fenway Park.
It could have been a fun night. A Friday Red Sox-Yankees game in September when both teams have something on the line is terrific in any year. This one had the added feature of being a likely preview of the Oct. 5 Wild Card game right down to the pitchers. Coming in, the Nathan Eovaldi vs. Gerrit Cole matchup was exactly who each team would have wanted to pitch if they could set their rotation for the one-game showdown. Ace vs. Ace.
There was a buzz in the park and in the region that’s been lacking for a lot of the year. It didn’t last long. Many of the 36,026 fans in the sellout crowd were gone before the ninth inning with the result decided early.
Eovaldi gave up hits to the first three batters he faced and was gone before Cole had even allowed his fourth hit. He surrendered seven runs on seven hits and didn’t get out of the third inning.
Eovaldi won’t win the Cy Young, but he’s worthy of the fourth and fifth place votes he’s likely to receive. He had a bad night in the midst of a good year. It’s not a cause for panic. This close to the postseason though, Friday’s struggles have to make Alex Cora at least pause. Would Eovaldi still be his Wild Card starter against New York if the teams play again and he gets the chance to set his starting pitching? It’s going to be hard not to have this game fresh in his mind.
Boston is still likely to get to the Wild Card game. Friday’s loss doesn’t really change that. Toronto missed a chance to gain ground with a loss to the last-place Twins. The Red Sox are three games ahead of the Blue Jays and close the year with six games against a terrible Orioles team and a bad Nationals squad. It would take an epic Boston collapse for the Blue Jays to make up three games with eight to go.
If they make the postseason, then what? The Red Sox have spent much of this year as a team nobody wants to bet on, but nobody wants to face. Are they a team with a deep lineup, three front-line starters and a bullpen that could be pretty good in October? Or are they a team that makes mistakes in the field and on the basepaths and hasn’t played consistently well against good teams since the trading deadline?
The answer depends on the night.
Saturday is now an interesting character test for Cora’s crew. If they lose, things will get even tighter. If they win, they’ll feel better and have a two-game lead in the race to host the Wild Card game. But even if they do win, there’s going to be some nagging questions that are hard to ignore. Did Gerrit Cole finally figure out pitching against the Red Sox? Did the Yankees solve Eovaldi?
It sure looks like an interesting next 10 days.

Boston Red Sox’s Nathan Eovaldi: ‘It’s frustrating. We know how important this game is’ Updated: 7:26 a.m. | Published: 7:26 a.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
BOSTON — Nathan Eovaldi has enjoyed so much success against the Yankees as a member of the Red Sox, especially at Fenway Park. He entered Friday with a 2.30 ERA (58 ⅔ innings, 15 earned runs) in 10 starts vs. New York since being traded to Boston during 2018.
He was 2-0 with a 1.07 ERA (25 ⅓ innings, three earned runs) in four starts against New York at Fenway.
But his start Friday was a much different story. He gave up seven runs on seven hits in just 2 ⅔ innings. The Red Sox lost 8-3 to the Yankees here at Fenway Park.
“It’s frustrating,” Eovaldi said. “We know how important this game is tonight. We know where we stand in the hunt in the Wild Card and for the playoffs. And to be able to come in tonight, I’ve got to be able to set the tone, especially first game of the series. I didn’t do that tonight. It’s extremely frustrating for me.”
So what happened?
“I didn’t have a really great feel on my curveball or splitter tonight,” Eovaldi said. “The splitter just kept slipping out. I wasn’t executing. I wasn’t getting it down in the zone. I left it up to (Aaron) Judge who was able to drive it into the gap. I had gotten (Gio) Urshela out on it but I really kind of shied away after that first inning, even after I kind of got control of everything in the second and third (innings) grip-wise. But I never really established the curveball in the zone.”
He said he needs his splitter to stay down and in.
“For me, those are my two key pitches. I need to have one of those working,” Eovaldi said about the splitter and curveball.
Eovaldi pointed out how he got ahead of some hitters but failed to put them away. Eovaldi got ahead of leadoff hitter DJ LeMahieu 0-2 but gave up a leadoff single on a 3-2 fastball, the seventh pitch of the at-bat. He was ahead of Judge 1-2 but the slugger doubled on an 84.7 mph splitter up and in.
Anthony Rizzo doubled on an 0-2 pitch to lead off the third inning.
“They did a really good job of protecting on the slider down and away,” Eovaldi said. “I threw the front-door cutter to (Giancarlo) Stanton and he drove that ball out of the park.”
Eovaldi said he needs to keep throwing his splitter even if he doesn’t have a feel for it.
“It’s one of those things, too, when I don’t have a certain pitch working, I can’t shy away from it,” Eovaldi said. “I’ve got to keep forcing it and figuring it out.”

Tom Caron @tomcaron 1h The 9/15 win at Seattle may go down as the most important game of the #RedSox season. Sox scored 6 runs in 10th to win. This Wild Card race would be a lot wilder if not for that 2-game swing.

John Tomase @jtomase · 3m The previously unstoppable Jays are suddenly tied with Mariners, 2 games behind Red Sox and 1 behind Yankees, on outside of Wild Card race. Boston's 6-run 10th in Seattle 10 days ago suddenly looms very large. M's have lost just once in 8 games since.

SCBLaw @scblaw · 2h @loumerloni why didn’t the Sox shuffle this around so Sale would face the Yankees. Have they been shielding him from tough matchups since his return?
Lou Merloni @loumerloni · 1h No, even though some have used that to remind you why you should hate this team. It’s because he can get an extra start this way if they need it. Maximize how many times he and Nate can pitch in the final couple weeks.
That game sucked last night. Nate wasn’t sharp at all. They got their ass kicked. But EVERYONE said going in all they need to do is win 1 game this weekend. Apparently some didn’t realize that meant in order for that to happen, they would lose 2

Lou Merloni @loumerloni · 57m He can’t play 1B. Yet, I kept being told that it’s “easy” and “anyone can do it”. Schwarber can’t.

Sure hope that I get the NESN feed today O'Brien was insufferable as usual last night but with NCAAA football on today, he is likely out of the booth
YES network feed will be muted if I see it come on...
and I see mlb tv is airing it so that means Bob Costas and he likely will have his yankee cap on.

Red Sox look to restore control after dropping first game to Yankees | Lineups and pregame notesUpdated September 25, 2021, 18 minutes ago After seeing their seven-game win streak snapped — and their lead for the first wild-card spot closed to one game — in a Friday night loss to the Yankees, the Red Sox will look to bounce back on Saturday in the second game of a pivotal three-game set at Fenway Park. Nick Pivetta has the ball for the second act of perhaps the most important series of the season. The righthander was roughed up in his only outing against New York this season, giving up four runs in just 1 ⅔ innings of work in the Bronx on Aug. 18. Nestor Cortes will throw for the Yankees, making his 13th start of the season after he was moved to the rotation in July. Cortes has a 3.26 ERA in 12 starts since the transition after a very strong June pitching out of the bullpen. With a win Saturday, the Sox can guarantee that they’ll leave the weekend still leading in the wild-card standings. Notes: While the Yankees closed to within a game of Boston for the first wild-card spot, the Blue Jays lost to the Twins to drop two games back of New York and three behind the Sox ... The Yankees are looking for their fifth straight win on Saturday ... Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres both homered Friday; Stanton has six homers and 14 RBIs in his last 12 games, while Torres is riding a 10-game hitting streak ... Cortes will be making his first career start against the Red Sox after allowing 11 runs over 10 innings (9.90 ERA) across six relief appearances against Boston ... Alex Cora is likely to bring Bobby Dalbec back into the lineup Saturday with a lefty on the mound for New York ...
