Red Sox @ Braves 10th May 2022 7pm@ Truist Park
Whitlock 1-1/1.25
Wright 3-1/1.74
Stingy starters clash as Red Sox open 2-game series at Atlanta FLM
The focus will be on the starting pitchers when the Boston Red Sox visit the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday to start a two-game interleague series.
The Red Sox starters have allowed two or fewer runs in 14 of their past 17 games and the Braves have allowed three or fewer runs in 16 of their 30 games.
That indicates runs may come at a premium on Tuesday when Boston sends right-hander Garrett Whitlock (1-1, 1.25 ERA) against Atlanta right-hander Kyle Wright (3-1, 1.74).
Whitlock has made three starts and allowed only two earned runs over 12 innings in that role. In his most recent start against the Los Angeles Angels last Wednesday, he retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a single in the fifth inning. Whitlock gave up two runs and struck out nine over a career-high five innings.
Whitlock leads the majors with a 0.69 WHIP and a .185 opponent's on-base percentage. Opponents are hitting just .143 against him. It's part of the discussion the team is having about the best way to use Whitlock, especially since Boston's bullpen has been struggling.
Whitlock appeared in 46 games as a rookie in 2021, all in relief, and had a 1.96 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings.
"Obviously we saw what (Whitlock) did last year, we saw what he did early on, but he has done an amazing job starting for us, too," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "It doesn't really matter. He's not going to pitch every day. The other guys have to step up and so far it has been inconsistent."
Wright has ascended to become Atlanta's top right-handed starter in the early portion of the season. The 2017 first-round pick has produced quality starts in each of his first five starts, two of them six-inning scoreless outings.
Wright took his first loss in his most recent start last Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets when he allowed three runs over seven innings. Wright didn't have his overpowering stuff -- a season-low three strikeouts -- but he kept the game close.
"There's been a lot of guys that have come through this game with great stuff but never put it together," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. "This young man is showing that he's on that road."
Wright has two career appearances, one start, against the Red Sox. He has a 2.08 ERA after allowing two runs in 8 2/3 innings. He made his major league debut in relief against Boston in 2018.
The Braves are coming off a 2-1 series win against the National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox have dropped five in a row after being swept in a three-game series by the Chicago White Sox.
The Red Sox are 4-14 over their past 18 games and have been hurt by the inability to win a close game. Of their 29 games, 17 have been decided by two or fewer runs, 10 by one run.
Atlanta right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. extended his streak of reaching base to 23 straight games, the longest in the National League. His streak goes back to June 25, before he suffered a season-ending knee injury on July 10. He has reached safely in all nine games played this year.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox know managing Garrett Whitlock’s workload is a dangerous game By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated May 9, 2022, 7:44 p.m.
ATLANTA — In 25-year-old Garrett Whitlock, the Red Sox have a budding ace who is under team control through 2028. There are few more valuable commodities in baseball.
The question is, how do you get the most out of him?
“We have to take care of him not only for now, but for the future,” manager Alex Cora said. “We’ll be smart about it.”
Whitlock went into the rotation on April 23 and is scheduled to make his fourth start on Tuesday night against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. The righthander has pitched 12 innings as a starter and allowed two earned runs on seven hits, with two walks and 18 strikeouts.
Based on how the Sox have built him up, Whitlock will be available for roughly 90 pitches and perhaps six innings.
“Obviously he’s not going to jump into seven innings. We know that,” Cora said. “The pitch count is something we’ll take a look at and stressful innings. He hasn’t done that in a while.”
Whitlock’s career high of 120⅔ innings came as a Yankees minor leaguer in 2018. He threw 70⅓ innings in 2019, his season cut short by Tommy John surgery in July. Whitlock missed all of 2020 recovering, and pitched 73⅓ innings as a reliever for the Red Sox in 2021 after being taken in the Rule 5 Draft.
The Sox hope there will come a day Whitlock is ready for 180-200 innings, but that has to happen gradually. For now, the Sox will give Whitlock occasional extra days off to manage his innings or occasionally skip a start. Even if he continues to pitch well, they’ll have to stay disciplined.
It’s a topic that Cora and pitching coach Dave Bush have discussed at length with the medical staff. Is Garrett Whitlock's future as a starter or reliever?
“There’s a lot of ways to get there,” Bush said. “It can be a bunch of five-inning starts and then add more when he makes a physical breakthrough.
“I think it’s reading the guy. If he’s fatigued after 75 pitches, we’ll take him out. If he feels strong and is pitching well, we’ll bump it up. There’s no hard cap at this point.”
A big part of that will be how Whitlock adapts to the routine of a starter and uses the four days between starts to get stronger. The final ingredient is trust. Bush has impressed on Whitlock the need to be truthful about how he feels.
“I’ve expressed that to all the pitchers: You guys have to be honest with me. If we’re going to make good decisions for the team and for them, they have to be honest with their feedback,” he said.
“The more information we get, the better adjustments we can make. Garrett has been a starter before, but it’s been a while. We need him to tell us how he’s feeling. We’re all after the same goal.”
Whitlock faced the Braves twice in relief last season and allowed three runs (all unearned) on two hits over 3⅓ innings, with two walks and four strikeouts. Uphill climb ahead
The 10-19 Sox will open the five-game road trip 10½ games out of first place. Based on the standings, it’s the franchise’s worst start since 1966, when the Sox were 8-21 after 29 games and 13 games out.
The ‘66 Sox finished 64-85. Manager Billy Hermann was fired with 18 games remaining. Dick Williams took over the following season and led the Sox to the World Series.
The 2020 Sox, who were tanking, were 9-20 and were 10 games out. They led to manager Ron Roenicke being fired after a 24-36 season. Players of the week
Lefthander Kyle Hart was named the International League’s pitcher of the week. He threw six no-hit innings and struck out eight against Toledo on Saturday. That dropped his ERA to 5.88 through seven games, two of them starts. Righthander Brayan Bello was the pitcher of the week in the Eastern League. The 22-year-old threw a seven-inning no-hitter on Thursday for Double A Portland. Bello is 3-2 with a 1.95 ERA in five starts and has struck out 37 in 27⅔ innings . . . The Sox are 19-9 against the Braves going back to 2014 . . . Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. is 10 of 36 with four extra-base hits and five RBIs in nine games since returning from knee surgery. He has a .939 OPS in 12 games against the Red Sox.

If that seems unusual, it is.
You have to back to 1966 (13 games out after 29 games) to find worse.

Red Sox notebook: Production from leadoff spot remains elusive Top of lineup ranks near bottom of MLB
By Steve Hewitt | stephen.hewitt@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: May 9, 2022 at 5:16 p.m. | UPDATED: May 9, 2022 at 7:22 p.m.
It won’t solve all their problems, but the Red Sox need more from the leadoff spot to jumpstart their offense.
The Red Sox’ 2-3-4 hitters – Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez – have predictably been their only consistent offensive performers this season. In fact, for all of their offensive deficiencies, the Red Sox, with that trio, are the only team in baseball that has three players with a batting average of .290 or better entering Monday.
But the Red Sox aren’t setting the table for them with any regularity.
From the leadoff spot, the Red Sox rank 26th in baseball with a .269 on-base percentage and 25th with a .577 OPS. That’s a far cry from the production from that spot last season, specifically from Kiké Hernandez. After a slow start last year, the center fielder reassumed his spot at the top of the lineup in late June and batted .271 with a .374 OBP and .876 OPS over his final 73 games. He became a monster in the postseason, when he slashed .408/.423/.837 with a 1.260 OPS in 11 games.
Those October numbers are obviously unrealistic to sustain over an entire season, but the Red Sox aren’t getting close to that regular-season production. Hernandez started the season at leadoff before losing it to Trevor Story, but neither of them have ignited the offense the way the Red Sox need.
“That’s the thing that we battled with on a daily basis,” manager Alex Cora said over the weekend. “We always talk. If you think about it, when an offense is going, probably three guys are hot and somebody else contributes. Right now, it feels like we have two hot guys and the other guys have stuff. When I make the lineup, I love hitting Raffy second because it’s more at-bats with him. He’s one of our best hitters and you can protect him, being a lefty against righties. But how are we going to get traffic in front of him? How are we going to do that? So far, obviously with the struggles that we’ve had, it’s been hard.”
Bogaerts has been by far the Red Sox’ best hitter through the first month. The shortstop’s .343 average ranks tied for fourth in the majors and his .393 OBP ranks inside the Top 10 in the American League. Has there been any consideration to put Bogaerts at the leadoff spot?
“Not yet,” Cora said.
As Cora noted, the leadoff spot isn’t the only issue. When they do have situations with runners on, they’re among the worst in baseball, an indictment on anyone in the lineup not named Devers, Bogaerts and Martinez. Their OPS ranks 29th in baseball with runners in scoring position and RISP with two outs, and 27th in any situation with runners on.
“I think it’s overall,” Cora said. “You lead off once in the game, but we haven’t been able to create traffic in front of the big boys from that spot or the bottom of the lineup. That’s where we’re at right now. When we have traffic, we haven’t been successful driving them in. I think the only way we’ve been driving in runs is sac flies. I think we have like 17 or 18 this season. But this is where we’re at right now. We just have to get better overall. There’s a lot of things that we’re not doing well offensively, and that’s the reason we are in this hole.” No rush on Casas
First base continues to be one of the Red Sox’ biggest problems. Their .413 OPS from the position is dead last in baseball. Bobby Dalbec’s struggles have been alarming and Franchy Cordero hasn’t produced much in limited playing time.
But don’t expect Triston Casas to save the day any time soon.
The Red Sox’ No. 2-ranked prospect is doing relatively well in his first season at Triple-A, with an .873 OPS, six homers and 20 RBI through 29 games. But after a 2020 in which the minor league season was canceled, and a hectic 2021 that included the Olympics, the Sox want the 22-year-old Casas to continue developing and go through the growing pains of a season before declaring him ready for the majors.
“He had a really interesting and great developmental year last year, but just because of how it was broken up with the Olympics, moving levels, he wasn’t necessarily in one place for long enough to really have the league make a lot of adjustments to him and then for him having to adjust in return,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said. “And one of the things about the game today, more than at any point maybe ever, certainly longer than I’ve been in it, is when you get to the major leagues, there is already a book on you. …
“Our job is to try to position everybody to be where their odds of success are as good as they can be, and to have him be here when they’re ready to be here. That’s certainly something that we think he can get out of this year.” Odds & ends
Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer is expected back in games for Single-A Salem this week, according to a source. Mayer hasn’t played in a game since April 23 due to workload management and then suffering minor right wrist soreness that kept him out longer.
Mayer, the No. 4 overall pick in last year’s draft, was off to a good start in his first professional season. He’s slashing .333/.397/.491 with an .888 OPS through 13 games. …
The Red Sox are 10 1/2 games back of the first-place Yankees going into Tuesday’s two-game series at Atlanta. … Garrett Whitlock will start Tuesday and Nathan Eovaldi on Wednesday against the Braves. The probable starters for this weekend’s series at Texas are yet to be determined.

Don Orsillo to call Boston Red Sox’s game vs. Braves on Tuesday for TBS; Hazel Mae will be sideline reporter Updated: May. 09, 2022, 8:59 p.m. | Published: May. 09, 2022, 8:54 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
Don Orsillo will call the Boston Red Sox’s game against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday for TBS. First pitch is at 7:20 p.m. at Truist Park.
Orsillo, who worked as the Red Sox’s primary play-by-play announcer for NESN from 2001-15, now serves as the voice of the San Diego Padres. He also works games nationally for TBS, including the postseason.
The game will air on TBS (stream here) for out of market and NESN.
The TBS broadcast also will include analyst Ron Darling and former NESN sideline reporter Hazel Mae.
Orsillo was best friends with beloved longtime NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy who passed away last October. He himself also is beloved in New England. The Melrose native grew up in New Hampshire rooting for the Red Sox and studied at Northeastern University. Hideo Nomo’s no-hitter April, 4, 2001 in Baltimore was Orsillo’s first broadcast at NESN.
More than 62,000 Red Sox fans signed a petition on the website change.org urging principal owner John Henry to bring back Orsillo after word spread NESN was firing him.
The Red Sox play at Atlanta both Tuesday and Wednesday. They have an off day Thursday before playing three games in Texas vs. the Rangers beginning Friday.

Red Sox at Braves series preview
The Sox head down south for a quick two-game set. By Matt_Collins@MattRyCollins May 10, 2022, 12:01pm EDT
SB Nation Blog
Battery Power The opponent in one sentence
The defending champs are off to a bit of a slow start with their record still sitting under .500, but they just got their best player back and still sit in second place in the NL East. Record
14-16 Trend
Up recently. The Braves had been playing some pretty poor baseball prior to this past weekend, having lost each of their previous two series including one to the Rangers, but they bounced back against the Brewers, taking two of three. Overall, they’ve won three of their last four. Pitching Matchups
5/10: Garrett Whitlock vs. Kyle Wright, 7:20 PM ET (TBS for out-of-market)
For now at least, Whitlock will be sticking in the rotation despite all of the late-inning questions on this roster. While there is a case to move him, it certainly has nothing to do with his performance in this role as he has excelled, albeit while still working up his workload and pitching relatively short outings. In his three starts, though, he has combined for 12 total innings, allowing just two earned runs (1.50 ERA), striking out 18 and only walking two. This will be a big test against a talented Braves lineup to be sure, but it’s not as though he’s been pitching against a cupcake schedule, so far facing the Rays, Blue Jays, and Angels. Until he shows otherwise, I expect nothing less than outstanding work from Whitlock no matter what role he’s pitching or who he happens to be facing that day.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have the misfortune of facing one of the hottest pitchers in baseball to start this season, but because this is a dumb sport where weird things happen maybe that’s just what they need to break out of their collective slump. The former number five overall pick is finally pitching up to his potential this season, sitting with a 1.74 ERA through his first five starts to go with a 2.08 FIP. There basically hasn’t been a weakness for the righty so far this season, with a high strikeout rate, low walk rate, and even a higher ground ball rate than we’ve seen from him in years. If you’re looking for some reason for optimism, he is coming off his worst start of the year, though that’s a seven-inning outing in which he allowed three runs, so really not that bad. Wright will lean heavily on his curveball while also featuring a pair of mid-90s fastballs and a changeup.
5/11: Nathan Eovaldi vs. Ian Anderson, 7:20 PM ET
If the Red Sox are going to rebound in this short trip down to Atlanta, they have the pitchers they’d want on the mound, first in Whitlock and then with Eovaldi. The one issue for the latter continues to be the long ball, which is a little scary against a Braves team that is not exactly short on power. After not allowing a homer in his start previous to his last — the first time he’d done that this year— he allowed another one his last time out. But even with the long balls he’s been excellent, sitting pretty much in line with what he did last season in terms of strikeouts and walks and boasting a sub-3.00 ERA.
Anderson is another high draft pick from the Braves rebuilding years last decade, having been picked third overall in 2016, the year before Wright was chosen fifth overall. Anderson hasn’t quite developed to the point that Wright has this season, struggling through five starts with a 4.01 ERA and a 5.03 FIP. Historically he’s been a guy that can miss a ton of bats, but a lack of control shortens his outings and gets him into trouble. Well, this year he’s still issuing the walks, but the strikeout rate has dropped significantly. The Red Sox have had a ton of trouble this year sitting back and letting the pitcher come to them, but in a matchup like this it is imperative. If they let Anderson get into a rhythm and expand the zone for him, it could be a long night. The righty will feature a fastball, changeup, and curveball. Old Friends
Collin McHugh never technically played for the Red Sox, but did sign here in 2020 before opting out of that COVID season. He was a possible target for Boston this past winter as well, but ended up in Atlanta.
Tyler Thornburg is indeed still pitching after flaming out in Boston, largely due to injury. He’s only thrown 7 1⁄3 innings this year, but they’ve been quite good with a 1.23 ERA and a 1.31 FIP. Notable Position Players
Ronald Acuña Jr. missed the second half of last season, including the playoff run, and the first few weeks of this year, but is back and prominently featured in this lineup. At his best, Acuña is among the most impactful players in the game, contributing in all facets.
Matt Olson was the replacement for longtime Brave Freddie Freeman, who left in free agency. If you’re going to lose someone like Freeman, it’s hard to think of a better replacement than Olson. He’s still got the same power and patience from his early days in Oakland, and over the last couple of years he’s cut way down on his strikeouts to become an elite bat in this league.
Ozzie Albies is often a forgotten piece of this roster, but he makes a lot of things happen at the top of the order with his contact skills and baserunning prowess.
Austin Riley broke out in a big way last season to help Atlanta absorb the Acuña loss, and he’s picked up right where he left off this year with intimidating power along with some newfound patience.
Marcell Ozuna was suspended for most of last season with a domestic violence allegation, and on the field has struggled to get back to his previous form.
Travis d’Arnaud is off to a nice start at the plate despite a glaring lack of walks, leaning on some batted ball luck for a 122 wRC+.
Adam Duvall has gone in the opposite direction, with a high strikeout rate not being supported by his typical power output.
Travis Demeritte has had a long road to the majors, but is off to a nice start in his current role with Atlanta.
Dansby Swanson isn’t going to win MVPs, but is a solid presence for this Braves team with good defense at shortstop and a roughly league-average bat. Bullpen Snapshot
Kenley Jansen left the Dodgers after a long and impressive run there, landing with Atlanta in free agency to serve as their closer. He’s off to a great start with his control back down to his prime levels and a FIP under 1.00.
Will Smith is one of two big-time lefties in this bullpen, though he’s putting up good results early this year despite a few extra homers and a declining strikeout rate.
Tyler Matzek is the other big-time lefty having emerged last season, but his control has taken a hit so far this season, especially over his last few outings. Injuries
Mike Soroka hasn’t pitched in a couple of years thanks to a brutal Achilles injury, but he’s rehabbing now and could be back in the second half.
Eddie Rosario had been having some vision problems and had a procedure to fix the blurriness he was experiencing and will be out until late June or July.
Kirby Yates is working his way back from Tommy John and could be another late-inning option for the final month or so of the season. Weather Forecast
It should be ideal baseball weather for both of these games, with clear skies and temperatures in the mid 70s.
