Pete Abraham @peteabe · 1h Sale's next start will be Tuesday at Tampa Bay. No more minors.
Cora was bemoaning all the walks the pitching staff has issued of late. 38 in 63 innings this month.
"We've got to work ahead. Overall we've been walking too many people ... We've got to throw strikes."
Eovaldi's goal is 60 pitches on Sunday in a minor league game. Sounds like a decent chance that may be all he needs.
Alex Cora on James Paxton's return from Tommy John:
"He's getting anxious. He sees all the guys kind of like flying all over the place (for minor league games), and paying [for] spreads and breaking TVs and all that stuff."
(He was joking.)

Boston Red Sox blitzed early by Yankees in 12-5 blowout loss; Jackie Bradley Jr. pitches in sloppy, long affair Updated: Jul. 08, 2022, 11:56 p.m. | Published: Jul. 08, 2022, 11:03 p.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- There was an abomination of a baseball game held Friday at Fenway Park featuring poor pitching, multiple injuries and fielders looking completely lost on routine plays. There was also the annual New York-Boston media game, held hours earlier.
The Yankees jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back as they beat the Red Sox, 12-5, in a 3-hour, 51-minute affair Friday night. New York tagged Sox starter Connor Seabold for seven runs on nine hits before he left with an injury in the fourth inning; the Yankees beat the Red Sox for the fourth time in five tries this season.
Facing a rookie starter for the second straight night, the Yankees once again hit the ground running in the first. Gleyber Torres opened the scoring with an RBI single, then Josh Donaldson’s second homer in as many nights -- a three-run blast -- made it 4-0. Christian Vázquez cut the lead in half with a two-run double off starter Nestor Cortes in the bottom of the first.
From there, it got worse for Seabold. He allowed runs in each of the next three innings and left with the Red Sox trailing, 7-2. Perhaps the most notable of the night came with one out in the third, when Joey Gallo hit a high, deep fly ball to right field that Christian Arroyo completely lost. As Arroyo extended his arms out as to ask where the ball was, it fell nowhere close to where he was standing and allowed two runs to score. Gallo was thrown out at home but given a triple. Matt Carpenter’s ninth home run of the year made it 8-2 in the fourth. Donaldson scored on a Vázquez throwing error later that inning to put the Yankees up seven. Then, the Red Sox came back to life a bit as Trevor Story and Bobby Dalbec each launched solo homers off Cortes in the fourth. Vázquez came up with the bases loaded (and a chance to get the Red Sox back in the game) but struck out.
Xander Bogaerts plated a run on a groundout in the sixth to make it 9-5. Then, the Red Sox had a chance to tie it when Story came up with the bases loaded. But he popped out to fourth, and New York tacked on runs in the seventh (Marwin Gonzalez sacrifice bunt), eighth (Torres RBI double) and ninth (Isiah Kiner-Falefa walk).
Seabold took the loss as his ERA ballooned to 11.91 in three starts this year. Right-hander Michael Feliz, who was called up Thursday, pitched admirably in relief, holding New York to two runs (one earned) while striking out four in 3 ⅓ innings. The Red Sox designated him for assignment after the game, according to a source, likely because they wanted a fresh bullpen arm for Saturday.
The Red Sox, who have lost four in a row and eight of 11 games, fell to 45-39. They now trail the Yankees by 16 games in the American League East standings.
Seabold, Devers both leave with injuries
Seabold left in the fourth inning with right forearm extensor tightness, according to the team. Rafael Devers left in the fifth with low back pain. Devers is day-to-day and unlikely to play Saturday night; Seabold said he wasn’t too concerned about his arm but will likely undergo testing. He felt the pain on a slider he threw in his final inning.
Refsnyder has 4 hits as Red Sox get to Cortes
There were some bright spots in the lopsided loss. Rob Refsnyder (4-for-5, 2B, 2 R) had a four-hit game, which was the second of his career. The Red Sox had 13 hits -- including eight off Cortes, who entered with a minuscule 0.953 WHIP. Martinez and Vázquez each had three hits.
Bradley Jr. pitches, strikes out LeMahieu
Low on pitching, the Red Sox turned to outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. to pitch the ninth. The outing was filled with highs and lows. Bradley -- making his first-ever appearance on the mound -- walked three and allowed a run while striking out D.J. LeMahieu for the second out. He reached 92 mph on the radar gun and threw 30 pitches (13 strikes).
Sox will try to bounce back Saturday
Righty Kutter Crawford (2-2, 5.04 ERA) will start Saturday night for the Red Sox. The Yankees will start lefty Jordan Montgomery (3-2, 3.19 ERA) in the third game of a four-game set. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET with the game scheduled to air on FOX.

Rafael Devers (back), Connor Seabold (forearm) both leave Boston Red Sox game with injuries; Devers won’t play Saturday Updated: Jul. 09, 2022, 12:12 a.m. | Published: Jul. 08, 2022, 9:35 p.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- The Red Sox entered Friday with 10 players already on the injured list. They’ll enter Saturday hoping that list won’t get longer.
Starter Connor Seabold and third baseman Rafael Devers both left Friday’s game against the Yankees early due to injuries. Seabold, who left with two outs in the third inning, is dealing with right forearm extensor tightness. Devers departed after four innings with low back pain. Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
Devers, who missed Tuesday and Wednesday’s game before returning to hit two homers off Gerrit Cole on Thursday night, won’t play Saturday, according to manager Alex Cora. He re-aggravated his injury chasing a foul ball and on a swing before Cora took him out.
“He has been dealing with this, actually, since Toronto with the turf and all that… I decided to take him out to give him a breather,” Cora said. “He’ll be down tomorrow then we’ll see how he feels. He’s feeling better but we’ve got to make sure we stop this.”
“It’s a day-to-day situation so we’ll see how I feel tomorrow,” Devers added (through interpreter Carlos Villoria Benítez.
Cora noticed Seabold stretching out his arm on a pitch he threw in the fourth inning. Catcher Christian Vázquez noticed, too. Cora decided to visit Seabold with a trainer and took him out once he got to the mound.
“It’s tight. Sore,” Seabold said. “I threw that slider (in the fourth inning) and everything kind of just tightened up on me.”
Seabold dealt with arm troubles in 2021. He didn’t make his season debut for the WooSox until July due to elbow inflammation. He is hoping his latest setback is not as serious as the one a year ago.
“I’m not too concerned,” Seabold said. “Obviously, we’re going to have to wait and see until tomorrow, see how it feels. As of right now, I’m not super concerned but we’ll see.”
The Red Sox, who lost 12-5, on Friday night, are hobbling into the All-Star break. Michael Wacha landed on the IL on Friday with right shoulder inflammation one day after reliever Tyler Danish was sidelined with a right forearm strain. Rich Hill’s left knee sprain sent him to the IL last week. And four players who hit the IL in early June -- Matt Barnes, Kiké Hernández, Garrett Whitlock and Nate Eovaldi -- are all working their way back along with lefties James Paxton, Chris Sale and Josh Taylor, who have yet to pitch this season. Christian Arroyo also was dealing with a tight groin during Friday’s loss but is expected to be OK for Saturday.

Boston Red Sox will start Kutter Crawford on Saturday; Michael Feliz designated for assignment with more moves to come Published: Jul. 09, 2022, 12:35 a.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- For the Red Sox, the pitching carousel just keeps going ‘round and ‘round.
Right-hander Kutter Crawford will start Saturday’s game against the Yankees, manager Alex Cora said. Crawford will be Boston’s fourth consecutive rookie starter. Meanwhile, reliever Michael Feliz, who pitched well in mop-up duty in Friday’s 12-5 loss, was designated for assignment after the game, according to an industry source.
Crawford will make his first major league start since June 18. He struck out eight batters in 5 ⅓ scoreless relief innings as a bulk reliever following opener Austin Davis on Monday against Tampa Bay. On the season, he’s 2-2 with a 5.04 ERA in 25 innings.
Feliz was added to the 40-man roster and activated Thursday. He relieved Connor Seabold on Friday and held the Yankees to two runs (one earned) on a single hit in 3 ⅓ innings while throwing 61 pitches. The Red Sox likely want a fresh bullpen arm or two after using relievers for a combined 15 ⅓ innings (including Jackie Bradley Jr.’s inning Saturday) over the last three days. They’ll likely add a reliever from Worcester and now can add someone who’s not on the 40-man roster. Kaleb Ort is a name to watch. Zack Kelly and Frank German are two other options.
The Red Sox have made pitching transactions in each of the last three days and six of the last seven. They might make more than one move Saturday if Connor Seabold (right forearm extensor tightness) needs an injured list stint. If that happens, then Phillips Valdez can be brought back to the majors (he can’t come back for a certain number of days unless he’s an injury replacement.

JBJ on the mound? It was actually a treat 2:30 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- For his entire career, covering 1,082 games, Jackie Bradley Jr. has been known for his rocket throwing arm in center and right field.
On Friday night at Fenway Park, with the Red Sox needing to preserve their pitching for a bullpen game on Saturday, Bradley got to test his arm on the mound in the top of the ninth inning of an eventual 12-5 loss to the Yankees.
All things considered -- including the fact that Bradley hadn’t pitched since high school -- it went well.
It quickly became apparent that this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill position player pitching.
Bradley hit 90 mph or higher on the gun twice and was at 88 or higher eight times. He topped out at 91.5 mph.
However, the clear highlight was when Bradley got his only strikeout on a slowball (66.9 mph) that DJ LeMahieu swung through.
Statcast labeled it an eephus.
“Just a slower fastball,” Bradley said. “A lob-ball.”
The Red Sox sent the baseball back to the dugout and Bradley will save the souvenir.
“I struck out a former American League and National League batting champion,” Bradley said. “I’ll try to get him to sign it.”
It is never fun for a manager to ask a position player to pitch, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora felt he had little choice given the barrage of injuries to his rotation and his bullpen being thrust into a lot of action this week.
“I talked to him and was like, ‘Bro, be careful,’” Cora said. “He’s like, ‘I’m going to throw hard,' and he did throw hard. But he changed speeds, used a slider, and got a strikeout, had a few two-strike counts.”
Bradley, who allowed a hit and a run while walking three in a 30-pitch frame, didn’t find out he was going to pitch until shortly before he took the mound.
“I was asked with, I think, one out in the bottom of the eighth,” Bradley said. “It was like a last-minute, so I just tried to throw about 10-15 balls before going out there.”
Bradley thinks he would have hit the mid-90s with proper warmups but acknowledged he could have risked injury by throwing that hard.
“Maybe it was a good thing, then,” he said.
The Red Sox are in the midst of a tough stretch during which they’ve lost four in a row and six of eight. Bradley pitching at least provided some levity for the club and some fun for the fans.
And Bradley’s juices got flowing on a night he didn’t hit or play the field.
“Yeah, it’s fun,” Bradley said. “Any time I’m competing, I’m having fun, no matter where it is. I just focused on getting the job done and just enjoying the moment.”

Injuries & Moves: Wacha to IL; Devers, Seabold exit early 2:51 AM ADT
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
July 8: RHP Michael Wacha placed on 15-day IL The Red Sox had hoped Wacha would be able to start Friday night against the Yankees after he was scratched July 4 due to a "dead arm." But Wacha was placed on the 15-day IL, retroactive to July 5, with right shoulder inflammation, as Boston's rotation continues to be depleted by injuries. Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi and Rich Hill are other starters on the injured list. Wacha is eligible to return after the All-Star break.
"Hopefully sooner rather than later," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. [Putting him on the IL is just the smart thing to do, especially where we're at in the schedule the All-Star break and all that stuff. I don't want to put a timetable on it or whatever, but the hope is that he'll be with us soon."-- Ian Browne
July 8: 3B Rafael Devers to sit Saturday (back) Boston's All-Star slugger missed two games earlier this week due to back and lower right hamstring tightness. Devers was shown on camera wincing and rubbing his back during Friday's game, and he was removed before the Red Sox came out for defense in the top of the fifth inning. Devers bumped into the railing earlier in the game chasing a foul ball. The slight setback came a day after Devers went off with two homers and five RBIs against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.
Cora said that Devers won't play Saturday but could be back in the lineup for Sunday night's finale of this three-game series. -- Ian Browne
July 8: RHP Connor Seabold injured in rocky start Friday was a tough all-around night for Seabold. Not only did he allow nine hits and seven runs over 2 2/3 innings against the Yankees, but the team's No. 14 prospect had to exit the game due to right forearm extensor tightness. Seabold was called up earlier in the day to fill in for Boston's injury-depleted starting rotation.
"I noticed it on the last pitch before I went out there, he kind of started stretching his forearm on the side and [catcher] Christian Vázquez noticed it, too," said manager Alex Cora, who added the team would have more information on Saturday. -- Ian Browne
July 8: LHP Chris Sale's return will be Tuesday at Trop Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that Sale will make his 2022 season debut on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field for the second game of a four-game series against the Rays. Despite walking five batters over 3 2/3 innings in his Minor League rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Sale said he is ready to pitch for the Red Sox. The lefty suffered a stress fracture in his right rib cage in February. Even though Sale is on track to return, the Sox are expected to have top pitching prospect Brayan Bello make another start in Monday's series opener at Tropicana Field. -- Ian Browne
RHP Garrett Whitlock (right hip inflammation) Expected return: During July 11-14 series against Rays Whitlock started his Minor League rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester on July 8, allowing six hits and two runs over two innings. The righty walked none and struck out three. He threw 34 pitches, 26 for strikes. It remains to be seen if the Red Sox have Whitlock throw once more in the Minors before activating him. He will move back to a relief role when he returns. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: July 8)
OF Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) Expected return: Week of July 11 Hernández started his Minor League rehab assignment on Friday at Triple-A Worcester and went 0-for-4 as the DH. The expectation is that he will play center field on Saturday. Manager Alex Cora is leaving it open-ended how many rehab games Hernández will play. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: July 8)

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 8h The Christian Arroyo Crash Course in right field continues. He completely lost that one and wasn't even close to where it landed. Two runs score. Gallo thrown out at home. It's 7-2.
Lots going on there. None of it good.
Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 8h The #RedSox did Christian Arroyo a professional disservice by putting him in right field.
The right side of their lineup -- aside from a somewhat passable performance by Trevor Story -- has been brutal on the whole.
