Yankees @ Red Sox Thursday, 7th July 2022 7pm @ Fenway Park
Cole 7-2/2.99
Winckowski 3-2/3.12
New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 7:10pm EDT Written by Mark Ruelle
It should be a raucous crowd in Boston on Thursday night as the first-place New York Yankees head into town for the first time this season for a 4-game series. The Yankees have a commanding lead in the AL East Division thus far but Boston is also aligned for playoff spot as the two teams meet for the first time since the season's opening series. On the mound on Thursday night will be Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.99) taking on Red Sox rookie right-hander Josh Winckowski (3-2, 3.12). First pitch is scheduled for 710pm EST.
Driver's Seat The New York Yankees head to Fenway Park on Thursday with a sizable lead in the AL East and the swagger associated with dominance. The Yankees have baseball's best ERA, are #1 in runs scored and home runs and have the most wins in baseball. In their only series this season with their arch rivals, the Red Sox, the Yankees took two out of three games. The Bombers are 6-4 in their last ten games with a modest 2-game losing streak heading into Wednesday's series finale with Pittsburgh. On Wednesday night, the Yankees used a familiar formula: strong starting pitching and the long ball, and earned a two-game split with the Pirates. The Yankees hit a season-high six home runs including two grand slams in a 16-0 drubbing of the Pirates. AL MVP favorite Aaron Judge went 3-for-4 with one of the two grand slams in the win.
With the best record in baseball and a monstrous everyday lineup, there is not much to criticize about the Yankees thus far. One aspect of the Yankees that could be a concern is the team's batting average over the past 25 games. The Yankees are hitting just .222 over that span, however, they have 50 home runs in that time and have walked 104 times. If this team has a weakness, it would be in consistent hitting. If a team can keep the Bombers from leaving the yard, they can be tamed. That said, the Yankees have hit 133 home runs this season and set the MLB record for home runs in the month of June so...good luck with that. On the mound on Thursday will be Gerrit Cole. Cole is 3rd in the AL in strikeouts and 4th in K/9 this season. He has 11 quality starts and a 1.01 WHIP. In June, Cole went 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA and he picked up the win on Saturday against Cleveland, going 6 innings and allowing 3 hits and 2 runs.
Sox Surviving The Boston Red Sox continue to hang around the division race despite a starting five that has been decimated by injury. The Red Sox now have four of their five projected starters on the IL with assorted injury. Rich Hill just skipped a start, Michael Wacha has a tired arm and Garret Whitlock and Nathan Eovaldi continue to try to work their way back from injury. This does not include former Cy Young winner Chris Sale, who has missed the entire season thus far with a rib injury. Despite this, the Red Sox have gotten by with a slew of rookie pitchers making key contributions. On Wednesday, the Red Sox called up another rookie, Brayan Bello, to make a spot start against the Rays. Bello struggled with his control and allowed six hits, 4 runs and 3 walks in just 4 innings of work in his debut as the Sox lost two out of three to the Rays.
The Red Sox are just two games off of the Yankees pace in the past 25 games with a 16-9 record. They even have a respectable 3.52 ERA over that span despite having to feature a number of untested starters. The Red Sox have also struggled with consistency out of their bullpen with the league's 18th ranked bullpen ERA and the second most blown saves in baseball with 18. On the mound against the Yankees potent attack on Thursday will be rookie Josh Winckowski. Winckowski was called up at the end of May for a spot start and then again in June, where he has made a turn in the rotation ever since. In the month of June, Winckowski went 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA and, more importantly, kept the ball in the yard as he did not allow a home run. He started Saturday against the Cubs as well and gave the Sox six innings of 2 hit ball in a no-decision.
Yankees at Red Sox Thursday, at 7:10 PM EST Partly Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 73° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 10 MPH wind blowing right to left in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

Injuries & Moves: Wacha eyes Friday 12:00 AM ADT
LATEST NEWS
July 6: 3B Rafael Devers day to day (back, right hamstring) Wednesday marked the second day in a row the Red Sox didn't have their most dangerous hitter in the lineup. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Devers is dealing with a sore back and a sore right hamstring. The hope is that Devers will be back in the lineup for the opener of a four-game series with the Yankees on Thursday night.
"He was fighting [to be in the lineup], but we have to be smart about it," said Cora. -- Ian Browne
July 6: RHPs Nathan Eovaldi, Garrett Whitlock close to rehab assignments A day after they both threw two innings of live batting practice at Fenway Park, manager Alex Cora said that Eovaldi and Whitlock are both closing in on Minor League rehab assignments. Whitlock is going to the bullpen when he is activated, so Cora believes his assignment will be short. The team is in the process of plotting out a precise plan for the two key righties. -- Ian Browne
July 6: RHP Michael Wacha eyeing Friday return Wacha threw a bullpen session at Fenway Park just two days after he was scratched from his start due to a "dead arm". Manager Alex Cora will wait to see how Wacha responds before definitively saying the righty can start Friday's game against the Yankees.
"Michael got up on the mound. He was OK," said Cora. "Obviously we'll see how he reacts during the night and how he feels tomorrow. As of now, he'll pitch on Friday, so we'll see how that goes." -- Ian Browne
July 6: RHP Hansel Robles DFA'd to make room for Bello The struggling Robles was designated for assignment following Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Rays in order to make room on the roster for No. 3 prospect Brayan Bello, who was called up from Triple-A Worcester and is set for his MLB debut on Wednesday.
Robles had another rough outing on Tuesday, giving up one hit, one run and two walks. In his first eight outings of the season, Robles didn't allow an earned run. He fell off dramatically after that, posting a 9.19 ERA in his next 18 appearances, concluding with Tuesday. Robles went 2-for-8 in save opportunities. -- Ian Browne
OF Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) Expected return: Week of July 11 Hernández continues to make progress, and the hope is that he can start Minor League rehab assignment on July 8.
"He’s moving well. Now it’s all about the baseball part of it," manager Alex Cora said. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: July 6)
LHP Josh Taylor (lower back strain) Expected return: Mid-July Taylor had perhaps the strongest performance yet of his Minor League rehab assignment, striking out all three batters he faced for Triple-A Worcester on July 6. It was a positive development, considering Taylor had been roughed up in his previous rehab appearance, giving up three hits and two runs, including a homer, for Double-A Portland. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: July 6)

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Yankees come to Fenway for the first time this season By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 6, 2022, 8:14 p.m.
The Red Sox’ stretch of games aren’t getting easier following their 7-1 loss to the Rays Wednesday. The Sox are now 0-8 in series against American League East opponents this year.
Now, they invite the Yankees to town beginning Thursday. The Sox and Yankees haven’t played one another since Opening Day weekend in April, when the Yankees took two of three.
The Sox went on to sputter, going 23-27 for the first two months of the season. Yet the Sox crawled out of that deep hole The Yankees, though, have continued to flex their muscles with the most wins in baseball with 59 and have a commanding 14 game lead over the Red Sox (45-37) in the division.
The Red Sox aren’t focused on the standings, however. Instead, it’s all about the opponent. Plus, the Sox know they’re a different team.
“It’s always good to play the [Yankees],” Alex Verdugo said before Wednesday’s series loss. “It’s a rivalry. So I think it would be good. They’re a really good team this year. They’re playing well, and I mean, I think we’re playing well as well. So it’s just going to be one of those things where paper can say whatever it wants, but you’ve got to go out there and compete and play. We’ll find a way to do what we can to win.”
The Sox are still without some starters, including Nate Eovaldi, who is on the injured list with back/hip tightness. Michael Wacha had to be pushed back from his Monday start as he battled a heavy arm. He’s scheduled to pitch Friday.
Still, the Sox have gotten some quality starts from some of their young pitchers, such as Josh Winckowski, who has a 3.12 ERA in 26 innings. Winckowski will start Thursday, which will begin the four-game set.
“In terms of it being the Yankees, I’m going to treat it like it’s another start,” Winckowski said. “It doesn’t really matter what the opposing lineup is I’m going to try to do the same thing every game.”
The Yankees will have Gerrit Cole up against Winckowski, followed by Nestor Cortes, Jordan Montgomery, Jameson Taillon. Each of the Yankees’ five starters (including Luis Severino) have a sub-4.00 ERA with Cortes coming in with a 2.44 ERA.
Verdugo, certainly, is looking forward to it.
“‘Those series fire me up,” Verdugo said. “I’m trying to have the best at-bats that I can and see pitches.”
The Sox haven’t announced a starter for Saturday. It could be a situation where the team utilizes the opener method. Nick Pivetta, however, is scheduled to go in Sunday’s matchup to wrap up the series.
“They’re having a great season,” manager Alex Cora said after Wednesday’s loss to the Rays regarding the Yankees. “They’re doing an outstanding job. We’ll see what happens. We feel like we belong in the conversation.” Hansel Robles officially designated for assignment
To make room for Red Sox top prospect Brayan Bello, the team designated Hansel Robles for assignment. Robles pitched well to begin the year, allowing zero runs over his first eight appearances (nine innings) this season.
Nevertheless, over Robles’s final 18 appearances (15⅔ innings), he had a 9.19 ERA, yielding 16 earned runs and four homers. Robles had a 5.84 ERA on the year. The Sox acquired Robles from the Twins at the trade deadline last season.
“That was a tough one because what he did for us last year was amazing,” said Cora regarding Robles, who had a 3.60 ERA in 25 innings for the Sox last year while striking out 33. He was really good for us. But it’s the nature of the game.”
Rafael Devers sits for second day
Rafael Devers was out of the lineup for the second straight day with a sore back and sore right hamstring. He was available off the bench to pinch hit. “He was battling down there [in Chicago],” Cora said. “So we have to be smart about it.” … Wacha threw off a mound. The team will see how he responds . . . Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) could go on a rehab assignment to Worcester beginning Friday . . . Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock (right hip inflammation) could go on a rehab assignment sooner rather than later . . . Rich Hill, who sprained his left knee Friday, was on the field playing catch before the game. Hill said he felt good throwing using the brace he was fitted for on Thursday. His stint on the injured list could be a short one . . . Chris Sale threw 72 pitches in 3⅔ innings in his rehab start at Worcester. It could be Sale’s last rehab start. If so, he would be slated to start Monday at Tampa . . . The Sox marked Disability Pride Month by recognizing some area athletes from the Special Olympics and Paralympics. One of the first pitches was thrown out by Fenway Park press box attendant Kevin Doyle, who has been with the team since 1999. Siblings Paul Sylvestre and Lillian Kearney of Boxford, representing the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress, sang the national anthem.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 6h 32 walks in the last 53 innings for Red Sox pitchers. Can't do that against the Yankees in the next series.
After needing 5 IP from the 'pen tonight, Sox will surely option Bello tonight (or tomorrow) and bring a fresh arm in.
Sox (45-37) have lost four of six and six of nine with the Yankees coming in for four games starting tomorrow.
First series against NY since the first series of the season.

Red Sox notebook: Rafael Devers out for second consecutive game with sore hamstring, back
By Steve Hewitt | stephen.hewitt@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald July 6, 2022 at 6:37 p.m.
It’s been rare to see Rafael Devers out of the lineup this season, so it was surprising to see him out for a second consecutive night on Wednesday. But it doesn’t seem like there’s serious concern for the Red Sox third baseman.
Devers is dealing with soreness in his back and right hamstring, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. The third baseman wasn’t in the starting lineup but was available to pinch-hit in Wednesday’s finale with the Rays. Devers could return Thursday when the Red Sox start a four-game set with the Yankees.
“He was fighting it down there but we have to be smart about it,” Cora said. “I think the running game is going to slow down for a little bit now, the stolen-bases attempts.”
Devers has been a nearly daily fixture in the lineup this season. He played in the Red Sox’ first 56 games this year before finally missing one on June 8 against the Angels. He started in 78 of the Red Sox first’ 81 games.
Without Devers in the lineup, Christian Arroyo started at third base and Christian Vazquez – who entered with a .965 OPS over his previous 15 games – slotted in at the No. 2 hole.
It’s a big week for Devers, who has a good chance to be named an All-Star starter for a second consecutive season. As of Wednesday, Devers has the edge over Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez in Phase 2 of fan voting, receiving 58% of the vote. Voting concludes on Friday, when the American and National League starters are revealed.
Robles DFA a ‘tough one’
After another poor outing in Tuesday’s loss, Red Sox reliever Hansel Robles was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Brayan Bello to make his major league debut.
Robles started the season strong after a late start in spring training, posting a 0.00 ERA with nine strikeouts in his first nine innings as the team’s de facto closer. But after that, he wasn’t close to being reliable. From April 29 on, he produced a 9.19 ERA and five blown saves.
Robles, who was acquired at last season’s trade deadline, was a valuable contributor down the stretch last season as he helped the Red Sox get into the playoffs. But after Tuesday’s outing, it was time to part ways.
“That was a tough one because what he did for us last year was amazing,” Cora said. “He was really good for us, really good. He’s a great kid. What he did early on, he pitched one game in spring training and he was good for us early, but it’s the nature of the game.”
Odds & ends
Michael Wacha, who was scratched from Monday’s start with a tired arm, is expected to start Friday against the Yankees “as of now,” Cora said. The right-hander threw a bullpen Wednesday and they’ll assess how his body responds to that. …
Kiké Hernandez (hip) will most likely begin a rehab assignment on Friday, Cora said. Garrett Whitlock (hip) and Nathan Eovaldi (back) aren’t too far behind and will go on a rehab assignment sooner rather than later.” …
Red Sox prospect Ceddane Rafaela was selected to the All-Star Futures Game, which will be played on July 16 at Dodger Stadium. The 21-year-old outfielder has had one of the best first halves of any prospect in the system this season, batting .314 with 15 homers, 54 RBI and a .946 OPS in 68 games split between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland.

Red Sox ‘feel like they belong in the conversation’ with first-place Yankees, Alex Cora says; they’ll play them 16 times in second half Published: Jul. 07, 2022, 6:00 a.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- Much has changed since the Red Sox and Yankees last faced off three months ago at Yankee Stadium. When the teams opened the season against each other, the feeling was that they were comparable clubs who would be jockeying for position in the American League East.
That has not been the case. The Yankees have the best record in baseball at 59-23 and lead the Red Sox and Rays (who are now tied for second in the division) by 14 games. After a brutal 10-19 start and .500 May, the Red Sox stormed back into the hunt with a 20-6 record in June. The Sox have the fourth-best record in the AL but are one of many teams in a crowded middle of the pack.
This weekend’s four-game set between the Red Sox and Yankees, then, could be looked at as a measuring stick. But manager Alex Cora chooses to look at the series as simply four games in a 162-game marathon.
“Our measuring stick is right there in front of us every day,” Cora said. “We have 45 wins and I think we have the third or fourth best record in the American League. We got off to a terrible start and this is where we’re at. On a daily basis, regardless of who you play, it’s the day we have to attack.” Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
“They’re having a great season, they’re doing an outstanding job,” he continued. “They beat us two out of three the first three games of the season. We’ll see what happens. We feel like we belong in the conversation. They’ve been great so far. We’ll see how it goes.”
Sixteen of Boston’s remaining 80 games -- or exactly 20% -- will come against the Yankees. The sides will match up again next weekend for three at Yankee Stadium before the All-Star break, then three more times in August at Fenway Park before each hosting a home series in September. Only two of New York’s first 59 wins came against their rivals. The Red Sox hope to limit the damage from here on out.
The Red Sox, though, have struggled against their division. Wednesday’s 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Rays meant Boston dropped yet another series to an AL East team. The Sox have lost all eight of their series against divisional teams this year, including dropping two of three in Toronto last week and two of three at home to the Rays to start this homestand. In total, Boston is 9-18 against the Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays and Orioles. They’re 36-19 against everyone else.
Cora gave a simple way to start beating the other teams in the East: the Red Sox just need to play better baseball against good competition.
“We are where we’re at. We won 45 games in the first half and we know where we’re at in the standings and what we have to do,” he said. “Obviously, disappointed that this is the way we’ve been playing in the division, but we know we can hang with them, we can play better baseball and we can start winning games.”

Gerrit Cole gets call as Yankees open series at Boston FLM
New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole had a date circled on his calendar, but instead of facing the organization that drafted and developed him, the Pittsburgh Pirates, he'll use his skills against his club's top rival.
The American League East-leading Yankees will begin a four-game series against the host Boston Red Sox on Thursday night, with Cole getting the nod in the series opener.
But it wasn't supposed to be that way.
A rainout of his scheduled start last Friday in Cleveland forced a doubleheader on Saturday and moved his start back one day. Cole (7-2, 2.99 ERA) then missed pitching for the first time ever in Pittsburgh in visitors' gray.
The Yankees split a two-game set against the Pirates the past two days, taking the series finale 16-0 on Wednesday.
"I just really haven't been back to kind of soak it all up and think about it and how this feels," Cole said in Pittsburgh. "It's pretty cool. I've got to take care of Boston (on Thursday), but I do wish to pitch here at some point again. That'll be really exciting."
Instead, he gets another turn in one of baseball's fiercest rivalries.
Across 11 career regular-season starts against Boston, Cole holds a 5-3 ledger with a 4.00 ERA. In two postseason starts vs. the Red Sox, including the AL wild-card game last year, he is 0-2 with a 7.86 ERA.
In the finale at Pittsburgh, the Yankees hit a season-high-tying six homers as part of a season-best 22-hit attack. They scored 11 times in the final two frames. Luis Severino fired six innings of shutout ball in the blowout.
New York first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who has 22 homers and 52 RBIs, missed both games against the Pirates due to lower back stiffness.
Boston opened the 2022 season by dropping two of three games against the Yankees. Since last August, the Red Sox have been on the losing end of eight of the past nine regular-season meetings between the bitter foes.
Rafael Devers, who started 78 of Boston's first 81 games in 2022, missed the past two games of the just-concluded road series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The third baseman took a seat due to minor back and hamstring ailments as the Red Sox fell 8-4 on Tuesday and 7-1 on Wednesday.
"He was fighting it down there, but we have to be smart about it," Boston manager Alex Cora said of sitting Devers, who is hitting .327 with 17 homers and 46 RBIs.
Boston's Hansel Robles, a shutdown reliever leading up to last season's playoffs, was designated for assignment on Wednesday to accommodate the arrival of Brayan Bello, the organization's top pitching prospect. Bello took the loss in his major league debut, allowing four runs on six hits in four innings against the Rays.
Boston's Josh Winckowski (3-2, 3.12) will make just his sixth career start on Thursday and his first appearance against the Yankees.
The 24-year-old right-hander recorded victories in three of his past four starts and turned in a strong start on Saturday in Chicago during a loss to the Cubs. He allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in six innings while walking one and striking out six.
While opposition hitters are batting an impressive .290 against Winckowski, he has allowed just one long ball over 26 innings.
