Jeter Downs goes down again and Duran k's looking again and the boos rain down
Almost time for Sweet Caroline I'm not as down on Downs, but he shouldn't be with the team either. He could still be a real player. He is a middle IF with some pop. But they need to bury the guy in AAA and tell him that they won't look at him until he brings the strikeouts down.

Now that my whining is over, this was an encouraging start by Crawford. I always want to win, but if it isn't to be our year, making a couple of trades, and developing Crawford, Winc, and either Seabold or Bello as reliable starters, we can salvage something from the season.

Blue Jays ride Manoah's arm more than their bats, beat Bosox AP
BOSTON (AP) All-Star Alek Manoah pitched six sharp innings as the Toronto Blue Jays relied more on his arm than their bats to keep up their season-long dominance of the Red Sox, beating Boston 4-1 Saturday.
A day after Toronto set a team record for runs - and posted the most ever scored against the Red Sox - in a 28-5 romp, Manoah set the tone.
''When he's on the mound, we know we have a chance to win,'' Toronto interim manager John Schneider said. ''It's easy to get up for a game when he's on the mound.''
Boston lost for the eighth time in nine games. Red Sox fans were sure to get a cheer on Sunday, however, when former slugger David Ortiz was inducted into the Hall of Fame - plenty of them headed to Cooperstown, New York, to see Big Papi enshrined.
''It's very challenging and tough, but no one will feel sorry for you, especially the opposing team. They feel it's a perfect situation for them,'' Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts said. ''We need to go out with the team and the lineup we have. We're all here for a reason. We can play.''
Manoah (11-4) allowed one run, on a homer by Bobby Dalbec that cleared everything in left field in the second, and seven hits. He walked none, struck out seven and lowered his ERA to 2.24.
''My competitiveness is something that I know I can control,'' Manoah said. ''Having that will to win and expecting nothing less is what I'm trying to do every day.''
The animated Manoah barked at the Boston bench after ending his outing with three straight strikeouts. He fanned fellow All-Star Bogaerts to start that late flourish.
''He's an emotional guy and that's what makes him elite - the way he competes,'' Schneider said. ''Just make sure your emotions don't get the best of you and show up your opponent, but you couldn't ask much more from him out of that inning.''
Jordan Romano pitched a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 21st save.
Toronto got seven hits a day after pounding out 29, and improved to 9-3 against the Red Sox this year. The Blue Jays are 3 1/2 games ahead of Boston for the AL's final wild card spot.
Toronto pieced together a three-run third off rookie Kutter Crawford (2-3). Santiago Espinal and George Springer hit RBI singles and Alejandro Kirk had a sacrifice fly.
DEVERS OUT
The Red Sox put All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day injured list because of right hamstring inflammation, making the move one day after his early exit in the fifth inning.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Blue Jays: Yusei Kikuchi (neck strain) delivered five innings of two-hit shutout ball in a rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday. The lefty finished with four strikeouts and three walks while throwing 43 of his 77 pitches for strikes. Interim manager John Schneider said the next 72 hours will be key before plotting the next course of action for a pitcher who has posted a 5.12 ERA in 16 starts before getting placed on the 15-day injured list earlier this month.
Red Sox: Back spasms kept All-Star DH J.D. Martinez out of the lineup for the second straight game. ''He doesn't feel great,'' manager Alex Cora said. ''Hopefully by tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday, he'll be back in the lineup.'' . Rich Hill (left knee sprain) has a bullpen session scheduled for Sunday. The lefty pitcher has been on the IL since July 2. . Cora says RHP Matt Barnes (shoulder inflammation) was in good spirits following Friday's rehab appearance with Worcester. He is scheduled to throw an inning for the WooSox on Sunday. . INF/OF Kike Hernandez (hip flexor strain) was transferred to the 60-day IL. .... 2B Trevor Story (bruised right hand) is throwing but still hasn't swung a bat since landing on the injured list on July 16.
UP NEXT
Blue Jays: Ross Stripling (5-3, 3.03) will look to continue to build on what's been a strong July. The right-hander has posted a 2.70 ERA in his previous three starts this month.
Red Sox: Top pitching prospect Brayan Bello (0-1, 10.13 ERA) makes his third start on Sunday. The 23-year-old is still searching for his first MLB win and will be looking to pitch into the fifth inning - something he didn't do in each of his first two starts with Boston.

Injuries & Moves: Devers (hamstring) placed on IL July 23rd, 2022
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
July 23: 3B Rafael Devers (right hamstring inflammation) placed on 10-day IL; OF Jaylin Davis selected to MLB roster from Triple-A Worcester Devers was placed on the IL ahead of Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, as manager Alex Cora had warned was a distinct possibility. Devers felt the issue in his right hamstring after his fifth-inning at-bat on Friday, his last of the night; he was replaced by Bobby Dalbec at the hot corner in the top of the sixth. Devers was undergoing testing pregame Saturday, and the club ultimately decided that he needed a stint on the IL to recover.
“Well, he says he felt it in the swing,” Cora said. “If you see him running the bases on the first [hit], the double, he didn’t look too good running to first. On the swing [in the fifth], he grabbed it, and I was like, ‘Oh, are you OK?’ And he was like, ‘Nah.’”
Davis, who is in his first year with the Red Sox after being claimed off waivers from the Giants on April 28, joined the big league club in a corresponding move. The 28-year-old outfielder has hit .236 with a .717 OPS in 56 games at Triple-A this season.
July 23: J.D. Martinez (back spasms) scratched from Friday’s lineup, still out Saturday Martinez, who had been slotted into the No. 3 spot in the order Friday as the designated hitter, was scratched about an hour before first pitch of the series opener against the Blue Jays due to back spasms, per the Red Sox. He was still dealing with the issue Saturday and did not return.
“[It] doesn't look great,” said manager Alex Cora. “Hopefully by tomorrow or Monday, he'll be back in the lineup.”
LHP Rich Hill (sprained left knee) Expected return: August Hill tossed a three-inning simulated game at Fenway Park on July 22, and he looked “really good,” according to manager Alex Cora, with his velocity reaching 90 mph. The left-hander will next throw a bullpen session on July 24, and then the Red Sox will determine a plan for him for the following week. Hill has been wearing a knee brace during his rehab work recently, leading Cora to quip, “Maybe the brace is helping him out.” (Last updated: July 23)
LHP Matt Strahm (left wrist contusion) Expected return: Late July Strahm was hit on the left wrist by a line drive on July 12 against the Rays, but X-rays were negative. According to manager Alex Cora, Strahm has been able to play catch but the wrist remains stiff, though not as sore as it was before. “So hopefully by the time [the IL stint] runs out, he'll be with us,” Cora said. (Last updated: July 23)
2B Trevor Story (right hand contusion) Expected return: August Story injured the hand on July 12 when he was hit by a pitch from Rays right-hander Corey Kluber. The Red Sox initially believed the injury would not require an IL stint but opted to play it safe. Rookie infielder Jeter Downs has gotten an extended look at second base while Story is sidelined. Story has been playing defense and throwing, but he has yet to swing a bat since the injury occurred. (Last updated: July 23)
RHP Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) Expected return: Late July Wacha will throw a simulated game on July 25, and all signs point to the righty moving back into the rotation in fairly short order. This is the second IL stint of the season for Wacha, who is 6-1 with a 2.69 ERA in 13 starts. (Last updated: July 23)

BOSTON — Kutter Crawford pitched well again but the Red Sox offense provided him little run support, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight men on base.
Boston kept this game close after being outscored 55-8 in its previous three games. But the Red Sox lost 4-1 to the Blue Jays here Saturday at Fenway Park.
Boston dropped to 12-28 vs. AL East teams. It also is just one game above .500 at 48-47 after being as many as 11 games over (42-31) on June 26.
Crawford went 6 innings, allowing three runs, five hits and one walk while striking out four.
The 26-year-old rookie has a 2.82 ERA (22 ⅓ innings, seven runs) over his past four outings (three starts). He has just four walks and 24 strikeouts during the stretch.
Bobby Dalbec’s 391-foot solo homer in the second inning put the Red Sox ahead 1-0. But the Blue Jays answered immediately with three runs on four straight hits to start the top of the third inning.
Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah allowed one run in 6 innings. He walked nobody and struck out seven while also allowing seven hits.
Boston’s offense couldn’t do much without J.D. Martinez (back spasms) and Rafael Devers (right hamstring inflammation).
Devers was placed on the IL before the game. Martinez is expected back within the next couple of days.
Rookies Jarren Duran (leadoff) and Jeter Downs (No. 9 hitter) went a combined 0-for-7 with five strikeouts.
Franchy Cordero went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and left five men on base. He’s 0-for-21 with 17 strikeouts in his past seven games.

Boston Red Sox’s Xander Bogaerts: ‘It’s tough but no one will feel sorry for you, especially the opposing team’

BOSTON — The Red Sox placed All-Star slugger Rafael Devers (right hamstring inflammation) on the 10-day injured list Saturday, then lost again with a makeshift lineup.
Boston fell 4-1 to the Blue Jays here at Fenway Park to drop to 5-14 in July and 12-28 against AL East teams this season.
The Red Sox are in a challenging spot with 13 players — including Devers, Trevor Story, Chris Sale, Kiké Hernández, Rich Hill, Michael Wacha, Christian Arroyo, Matt Strahm and Josh Taylor — on the IL.
J.D. Martinez (back spasms) also has missed the past two games, although the Red Sox are hopeful he will return to the lineup Sunday.
“It is very challenging,” Xander Bogaerts said after Saturday’s game. “A lot of really good players are out. Some of our best players are out. It’s tough but no one will feel sorry for you, especially the opposing team. The opposing team, the team that’s looking at the schedule that sees that the Red Sox are next, no sympathy. They don’t feel sorry. They feel like it’s a perfect situation for them. So we’ve got to go out with the lineup we have, the team that we have. We’re all major league players in the end. We’re all here for a reason. We can play. Today was a really good ballgame. It sucks that we lost.”
Manager Alex Cora shared the same sentiment.
“It’s not going to get easier,” Cora said. “We’re banged up. We know that. But like I said before, nobody is going to feel sorry for us. He (Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah) showed it today. He was looking in the dugout, screaming at us. And yeah, this is where we’re at.”
The lineup the Red Sox are putting out there just isn’t cutting it.
Rookies Jarren Duran (leadoff) and Jeter Downs (No. 9 hitter) went a combined 0-for-7 with five strikeouts.
Franchy Cordero went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and left five men on base.
Backup catcher Kevin Plawecki, a .184 hitter, pinch hit for Downs in the ninth inning.
“This is where we’re at,” Cora said. “We’ve got to find ways to score runs.”
Cordero has gone 0-for-21 with 17 strikeouts in his past seven games.
“I think today, for the first time, I saw him frustrated after swings,” Cora said. “He’s not being able to stay on top of the fastball. And they are attacking him with that. Earlier in the season, he was taking those pitches. Now he’s swinging at it.”
Duran is 3-for-39 with one extra-base hit and 19 strikeouts in his past 11 games.
“He’s under the ball,” Cora said. “Early on ... he was hitting line drives up the middle. ... Everything was line drives. You can see now. It’s just a mechanical issue he has going right now. And he’s under everything.”

With key players out, Red Sox forced to do a lot of juggling By Jayna Bardahl Globe Correspondent,Updated July 23, 2022, 9:50 p.m.
The Red Sox were forced to juggle their lineup Saturday against the Blue Jays because of a long list of injuries.
Until now, the injury bug has cursed, and somewhat stayed within, the Sox pitching rotation. Trips back and forth to the injured list for Michael Wacha, Nate Eovaldi, and most notably, Chris Sale, have left Boston to perform a balancing act in the bullpen.
But in the Sox’ 4-1 loss to Toronto Saturday, the injury bug proved it was spreading … and doing so at a critical point in the season.
Third baseman Rafael Devers was scratched and placed on the 10-day IL with “right hamstring inflammation” just before first pitch and five-time All-Star JD Martinez missed his second game in a row with back spasms. Cora said “hopefully” Martinez will be back Sunday for the series finale.
Second baseman Trevor Story remains out with a hand bruise after being put on the 10-day IL retroactive July 14. l
All this left the Sox stretching to fill the cracks.
“A lot of good players are out, some of our best players are out,” shortstop Xander Bogaerts said.
Bogaerts, the sole Red Sox All-Star in game two against Toronto, said many teams will look at the state of the Sox and think of it as the “perfect situation” to capitalize on. But an injury-plagued lineup is no excuse to Bogaerts.
“We have to go out with the lineup that we have, the team that we have. We’re all major league players. In the end we’re all here for a reason, we can play,” said Bogaerts.
Without Story and Christian Arroyo (on the IL with a left groin strain), Yolmer Sánchez got the start at second base. Sánchez was selected to the active major league roster from Triple-A Worcester Friday. He also started for the Sox in Toronto, replacing Jarren Duran on the road trip he couldn’t take due to vaccination status.
Sánchez was 0 for 3 at the plate with one walk.
To highlight the Sox’ juggling show, the day before, Sánchez pitched in the ninth inning. He allowed three hits and the 28th run that put Toronto over the top for most runs scored against the Sox in franchise history.
“We’ve got to mix and match for X amount of days and we’ll do that,” Cora said.
Jeter Downs took the start at third base in the absence of Story and Arroyo. It was Downs’s second start and third appearance at the position this season.
Bobby Dalbec started at first base. Dalbec scored on a solo home run in the second inning for the only Red Sox run of the game. He went 2 for 4 at the plate in a positive performance Cora took note of.
With Devers out, Cora said Christian Vázquez could play first base against lefties with Dalbec moving to third.
Franchy Cordero took the designated hitter spot, but struggled in an 0-for-4 outing.
“I think today for the first time I saw him frustrated after swings,” Cora said. “He has not been able to stay on top of the fastball and they’re attacking him with that.”
The Sox ended with seven hits and just one run to show for it. They left eight on base.
Toronto starter Alek Manoah dished 68 strikes in his 97 pitches, and gave Dalbec a few words after striking him out to end the sixth inning.
“We’re banged up, we know that, but like I said before nobody’s going to feel sorry for us,” Cora said. “He [Manoah] showed that today in the sixth inning. He was looking in the dugout screaming at us and that’s where we’re at.”
The Sox’ losing streak against the AL East will continue in this series. All they can do is hope to avoid a sweep on Sunday.
“It’s definitely difficult having some key players out but it’s one of those things you have to deal with as a team,” said Saturday’s starting pitcher Kutter Crawford. “You just got to keep moving forward and keep putting in the work.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers placed on 10-day injured list with hamstring inflammation By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 23, 2022, 2:11 p.m.
The Red Sox will be without star third baseman Rafael Devers at the most pivotal part of their season. Prior to the team’s 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon, the Sox placed Devers on the 10-day injured list with what the team said was right hamstring inflammation.
The Sox are optimistic the injury will require only the mandatory 10 days.
Outfielder Jaylin Davis was recalled from Triple A Worcester, filling Devers’s spot on the roster. Related: With key players out, Red Sox forced to do a lot of juggling
Devers felt tightness on a swing during his last at-bat, in the fifth inning, on Friday. But manager Alex Cora noticed Devers was hobbled when he legged out a double in the first inning.
Devers has dealt with lingering back issues, and Cora didn’t rule out that Devers’s hamstring injury might be connected to that.
“Maybe,” Cora said before the game. “We talked to him in New York [last week], about the All-Star Game. He felt good in Los Angeles at the All-Star Game. It’s probably related, but [the hamstring injury] happened yesterday.”
The Sox have dealt with a number of injuries to pitchers. Now, the injury bug has hit the position players. Second basemen Trevor Story is still out with a hand bruise. designated hitter J.D. Martinez missed a second game Saturday as he deals with back spasms. A total of 13 players are on the injured list.
The Red Sox are 48-47 and fourth in the AL East standings.
“It’s not easy, obviously,” Cora said. “But at the end of the day nobody’s going to feel sorry for us. You’ve just got to keep going, keep trying, keep playing.” Keeping a level head
The Red Sox haven’t shown that they are a true contender this year, and with the trade deadline approaching and the injuries continuing to pile up, the Sox could be in sell mode.
Cora has urged his players to stay balanced.
“You’ve got to control today,” he said. “That’s it. You’ve got to perform and you’ve got to perform with whoever you have here. And we haven’t done a good job the last 2½ weeks. We have to get better, like I’ve been saying all along. It’s a good team that has to keep fighting.” Duran back in there
Center fielder Jarren Duran was back in the lineup Saturday, at leadoff for the fourth straight game despite Friday night’s meltdown during a 28-5 drubbing. Duran lost a ball in the twilight at Fenway Park, resulting in a Raimel Tapia inside-the-park grand slam in the third inning that highlighted a seven-run outburst and gave the Blue Jays a 10-0 lead.
What made it worse was that Duran did not run after the ball once he saw it land on the warning track, forcing Alex Verdugo, who was playing left field, to sprint over to center, retrieve it, and throw it in.
After the game when asked why he didn’t run after the ball, Duran had this to say: “Verdugo was already beating me to the ball. I just didn’t want to get in his way. What if I collide with him or something like that?”
Entering the day, Duran was minus-7 in defensive runs saved in just 196 innings. Only Reds utilityman Nick Senzel and Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds were worse. Both had played 500-plus innings.
When Duran’s name was introduced prior to the game Saturday, fans booed. When he struck out in his first at-bat against Jays righthander Alek Manoah, the boos grew louder. Duran finished 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He is 3 for 39 with 19 strikeouts in his last 11 games.
“He’s under the ball,” Cora said after the game. “Early on, he was hitting line drives up the middle. Everything was line drives. It’s just a mechanical issue he has going right now. And he’s under everything.” Progress reports
The Red Sox hope to get Martinez back either for Sunday’s series finale with the Jays or Monday’s series opener against the Guardians. “He doesn’t feel great,” Cora said . . . Rich Hill (left knee sprain) bounced back well following his three-inning simulated game Friday. Hill will have a bullpen session Sunday. The team will then make a decision on Hill’s progression . . . Story is still limited to taking grounders and throwing. He tracked pitches in the batter’s box Friday, but as of Saturday Story still hadn’t swung a bat . . . The Red Sox hope Josh Winckowski will start sometime this week. The Sox placed the righthander on the COVID-related IL after his July 13 start against the Rays . . . Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) was transferred to the 60-day IL. The earliest he could return would be Aug. 7. Hernández, who received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his hip prior to the All-Star break, is working out in the weight room but still isn’t doing any baseball-related activity.

Stripling 5-3/3.03
Bello 0-0/10.13
Blue Jays look to keep thumping Red Sox FLM
The Toronto Blue Jays look to continue their season-long dominance of the Red Sox and sweep a three-game road series in Boston on Sunday.
Toronto is 9-3 against its American League East rival after clinching the fourth straight series this season with Saturday's 4-1 win.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora's club showed improved effort compared to Friday's 28-5 loss, in which they allowed the most runs in a single game in franchise history.
But, there is work to be done.
"We just got to keep playing hard. It's not going to get easier," said Cora, whose team is 3-12 in its last 15 games. "We're banged up, we know that, but like I said before, nobody's going to feel sorry for us."
Injuries have been an issue as of late for Boston. All-Star designated hitter J.D. Martinez missed a second straight game with back spasms on Saturday.
"He doesn't feel great," Cora said. "Hopefully by (Sunday) or Monday, he'll be back in the lineup."
The Red Sox seemingly survived a Saturday scare as shortstop Xander Bogaerts was hit by a pitch in the hand and remained in the game.
Brayan Bello (0-1, 10.13 ERA) returns to the majors to make his third start of the season for Boston. He was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
Pitching reinforcements could be on the way, too. Rich Hill (left knee sprain) is slated to throw in the bullpen Sunday, while Matt Barnes (shoulder inflammation) is coming off a Friday rehab appearance.
The Jays are now 6-1 under interim manager John Schneider, winning two different types of games in the series. A three-run third inning proved to be the difference on Saturday.
"That was awesome. Before the game, we talked about how you can come out a little bit sleepy or we came out hot," Schneider said on Friday. "We came out hot."
George Springer and Alejandro Kirk have both reached base safely in eight straight games and look to help the Toronto offense to a sweep in Boston.
Boston, meanwhile, hasn't won a divisional series yet this season. The Sox are 12-28 against AL East foes.
"It's tough to lose against the AL East but in the end, you're just trying to get into the playoffs," Bogaerts said.
Ross Stripling (5-3, 3.03) has been outstanding since taking on a more permanent role in the starting rotation in early June, allowing more than two earned runs just once in his last eight outings.
The righty earned the win in his most recent start on July 13, holding Philadelphia to two hits and two unearned runs in seven innings. He has struck out six batters in back-to-back games.
Times have changed for Stripling, who had a 14.90 ERA in 9 2/3 innings against Boston last season.
"I choose to -- if you guys watch 'Ted Lasso' -- be a goldfish," Stripling said about those three outings last year. "Forget it. Move on from it. These guys have my number, but now I look on ..."
Though Stripling hasn't won either of his two starts against the Red Sox in 2022, he has allowed just three earned runs in 10 innings. He will face Boston for the ninth time in his career. He is 2-3 with a 6.09 ERA in eight starts.

Jon Couture @joncouture · 7h That's it. In the 111 seasons of baseball at Fenway Park, no visiting team had ever scored 25 runs in a game.
Until tonight. #RedSox
Jon Couture @joncouture · 6h Of all the things that happened tonight, Toronto scoring 11 runs when the bases were empty with two outs is a level of crazy all on its own. It really doesn't get any worse than it's been for the Sox the past few weeks. The last 3 series have been particularly brutal. I try to look for the positives even in our losses, but there's not much to say here.
