Yelich, Woodruff lead Brewers to 4-1 win over Red Sox AP
BOSTON (AP) Christian Yelich drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning, Brandon Woodruff struck out nine and the Milwaukee Brewers returned to Boston for the first time in eight years and beat the Red Sox 4-1 on Friday night.
Andrew McCutchen had a run-scoring fielder's choice and Tyrone Taylor added a sacrifice fly in the ninth. The Brewers improved to 6-1 since the All-Star break and won in their first game at Fenway Park since completing a three-game interleague sweep in April 2014.
Woodruff (9-3) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and four hits and two walks.
''From the second on, I was just able to get ahead,'' said Woodruff, who allowed just one hit through the first five innings. ''That's the biggest thing. If I can just get ahead and mix it up a little bit ... typically it leads to a good night but they put some at-bats together and made it pretty tough.''
The game was scoreless until the sixth when the Brewers finally got to rookie Brayan Bello (0-3) in an extended relief outing he was initially set to start. Boston manager Alex Cora made a game-day shuffle in the rotation by bumping Bello, who struggled through his first three career starts, to the bullpen and starting lefty Austin Davis instead.
Davis gave Boston two solid innings, then Bello managed to get himself out of a couple of jams over a three-inning stretch until the Brewers finally broke through in the sixth and seventh with Yelich coming through with key hits in both.
Yelich led off the sixth with a double and scored on McCutcheon's fielder's choice for the game's first run, then the Brewers took a 2-1 lead in the seventh after Tyrone Taylor lined a two-out triple to Fenway Park's dreaded triangle in center field.
Ryan Brasier came out of the bullpen to face Yelich, who drove the first pitch he saw for a single to left.
''He's swinging it good and that was an important run. Obviously, they put one together against Woody with some two-out stuff, so to get the lead right back was big,'' Counsell said.
The run was charged to Bello, who went 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs and four hits. He walked three, one intentionally, and struck out four.
Cora said Brasier's pitch to Yelich caught too much of the plate.
''It was the match-up we wanted,'' Cora said. ''We were looking for a swing and miss and we didn't get it.''
Boston threatened in the eighth with two men on and one out, but Devin Williams got Bogaerts swinging one night after he blasted a three-run homer late in a 4-2 win over Cleveland.
Woodruff retired 11 straight batters from the third, when he struck out the side, until the sixth, when Christian Vazquez lined a two-out double to center. Verdugo followed with a double to left just out of Yelich's reach at the base of the Green Monster to tie the score 1-all.
Brad Boxberger replaced Woodruff with one out in the seventh after Boston got two on with one out. Franchy Cordero hit a one-out single and Bobby Dalbec drew a walk. Boxberger got Jackie Bradley Jr. swinging, then Yolmer Sanchez hit a soft pop-out to short.
Josh Hader struck out three in the ninth to pick up his 29th save.
The Red Sox are just 2-5 on current 10-game homestand - their longest of the season - and 4-9 in the last 13 at Fenway. They are 3-12 in their last 15 overall.
NOW PITCHING
Bello started by hitting Tyrone Taylor with a 3-2 pitch, then got Yelich swinging and picked up two more strikeouts in the fourth. He walked back-to-back batters with one out in the fifth, but got out of the jam when he got Taylor to ground into a double play.
Cora said Bello pitched well despite getting tagged with another loss.
''Usually they don't swing a lot. They're very patient and he got a lot of swings from them - a lot of weak contact,'' Cora said. ''It was good to see him compete that way. He made some pitches.
WELCOME BACK
Hunter Renfroe, who drove in 96 runs for the Red Sox last season, got a short but warm welcome in his return to Boston.
BACK IN RED
The Red Sox ditched their alternate yellow jerseys after donning them for four straight games in a 2-2 split against Cleveland. Boston is 7-2 this season in yellow but went with red jerseys Friday night instead of their traditional all-white home uniforms.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: 2B Trevor Story was scheduled to see a hand specialist Friday for soreness he's still feeling more than two weeks after getting hit on the right wrist with a pitch. Cora said Story felt his recovery wasn't progressing as quickly as he hoped. ''He still feels it when he hits. He doesn't feel it when he throws,'' Cora said. ... LHP Rich Hill (sprained left knee) will be activated next week when the Red Sox visit Houston in a three-game series starting Monday, Cora said. Hill made a rehab start with Double-A Portland on Thursday, striking out five and allowing one run in three innings. ... Signed SS Jose Peraza to a minor-league deal. Peraza played 34 games for Boston in 2020.
UP NEXT
LHP Eric Lauer (6-3, 3.84 ERA) of the Brewers faces Boston RHP Nick Pivetta (8-7, 4.34) Saturday in the second of the three-game series.

Injuries & Moves: Story to see hand specialist; Hill's return July 29th, 2022
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
July 29: 2B Trevor Story set to get second opinion on ailing hand Story is set to see a hand specialist after suffering a deep bruise when he was hit by a pitch he swung at on July 12 at Tropicana Field. Originally, it was viewed as a day-to-day injury, but Story hasn't progressed the way he had hoped since going on the injured list the weekend before the All-Star break.
"He didn't feel today that he was progressing the right way," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "We feel that there's nothing structurally [wrong], but it’s just kind of to ease his mind. So we'll know more probably tonight or tomorrow. He still feels it when he hits. He doesn't feel it when he throws. But I think everybody in the medical department feels like we'll be in the same place tomorrow and it's about treatment and just keep getting better."
July 29: LHP Rich Hill cleared for return in Houston After a strong Minor League rehab start with Double-A Portland on Thursday in which he walked none and struck out five while allowing one run in three innings, Hill has been cleared to return to Boston's starting rotation when the club plays in Houston from Aug. 1-3. Though Hill told reporters he thought he was pitching Tuesday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora left the date for his start open-ended, but said Hill would be activated in Houston. Hill, who sprained his left knee while pitching at Wrigley Field on July 1, threw 56 pitches (40 strikes) in his rehab start. Hill is 4-4 with a 4.20 ERA in 15 starts for the Red Sox this season.
INF/OF Christian Arroyo (left groin strain) Expected return: "Upcoming days" With Trevor Story still out due to a right hand contusion, Arroyo's progress is worth following. And it looks like the Red Sox are primed to get the utility player back in "the upcoming days," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on July 29. Arroyo was the DH for Double-A Portland on July 27 and started at second base the following day, producing an RBI single. Arroyo was injured in the July 8 game against the Yankees. He is hitting .224 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 42 games this season. (Last updated: July 29)
3B Rafael Devers (right hamstring inflammation) Expected return: Aug. 2 Devers is going to face rehabbing Red Sox righty Michael Wacha in a sim game at Fenway Park on July 30. That should be a sufficient enough tune-up for Devers to return from the injured list on Aug. 2, the first day he is eligible. (Last updated: July 29)
RHP Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) Expected return: August Wacha is throwing his second simulated game of the week on July 30 at Fenway Park. The righty will go three innings. After that, he should be cleared for a Minors rehab assignment. This is the second IL stint of the season for Wacha, who is 6-1 with a 2.69 ERA in 13 starts. He last pitched for the Red Sox on June 28. (Last updated: July 29)

Boston Red Sox offense stalls in loss to Brewers; Milwaukee pitchers record 30 swings-and-misses
Published: Jul. 29, 2022, 10:40 p.m.
Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
BOSTON — The Red Sox had a chance in the eighth inning with two men on base and one out vs. dominant Brewers setup man Devin Williams but they couldn’t push the tying run across.
Williams, who has a 1.63 ERA and 41.5% strikeout percentage, punched out Xander Bogaerts swinging on a changeup and retired J.D. Martinez on a force-out to shortstop.
Williams held a 2-1 lead and the Brewers added two insurance runs on in the ninth to win 4-1 over the Red Sox here at Fenway Park on Friday.
Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff allowed just one run, four hits and two walks while striking out nine in 6 ⅓ innings.
The righty recorded 19 swings-and-misses, including eight with his four-seam fastball that averaged 96.6 mph and topped out at 98.6 mph.
Red Sox hitters swung and missed 30 times. Boston went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.
Bello tops out at 98.4 mph
Rookie Brayan Bello, who replaced opener Austin Davis in the third inning, topped out at 98.4 mph over his 4 ⅓ innings.
Bello threw 28 sinkers, averaging 96.3 mph, per Baseball Savant. His 13 four-seam fastballs averaged 97.6 mph. He also mixed in 11 sliders and 10 changeups.
The 23-year-old had his best MLB outing to date, allowing two runs, four hits and three walks while striking out four.
Davis has pitched 6.1 scoreless innings as an opener
Austin Davis opened for the Red Sox. He tossed 2 ⅓ scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out four.
Davis has opened three times this season, combing for 6 ⅓ innings and allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out eight.
Brasier gives up lead on his first pitch
The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. Christian Yelich led off with a double, then advanced to third on Willy Adames’ infield single. He scored on Andrew McCutchen’s groundout to third.
The Red Sox tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Christian Vázquez and Alex Verdugo with two outs.
The Brewers retook the lead in the seventh. Tyrone Taylor tripled with two outs.
Manager Alex Cora then replaced Bello with Ryan Brasier who allowed a go-ahead RBI single to Yelich on the first pitch he threw.
Yelich connected on a 97.6 mph fastball. Opponents entered Friday batting .354 (23-for-65) with a .646 slugging percentage vs. Brasier.

BOSTON — Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes reached up to 96 mph with his fastball during a rehab outing for Double-A Portland in Hartford on Thursday.
He pitched a perfect fourth inning. He got a groundout to first base and two strikeouts (one swinging, one looking).
Barnes, who is on the 60-day IL with right shoulder inflammation, might be activated this coming week.
The 32-year-old righty has another rehab outing for Portland today. It will mark his first time pitching back-to-back days on this rehab assignment.
Rich Hill also was in Hartford on Thursday to make a rehab start. Hill told manager Alex Cora that he was impressed with the carry on Barnes’ fastball. Barnes’ fastball often has sat 94-95 mph on his rehab assignment.
“It was a very competitive fastball,” Cora said Hill told him. “It had carry. ... He had the carry he had early in the season or two years ago. So that was encouraging. Barnsey felt good about it.”
Cora also spoke with Portland manager Chad Epperson who said Barnes felt comfortable with his delivery.
“The breaking ball was good. So he has one tonight and then hopefully everything goes well,” Cora said.
Barnes will meet with the Red Sox staff here at Fenway on Saturday. It then will be determined his next step.
“The most important thing with him is getting the fastball back and the carry on the fastball,” Cora said. “When he’s right, he can get lefties and righties out. So that’s an advantage he has when he’s right. So hopefully we can get that version and use him at will and get people out.”

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 7h Jackie Bradley Jr. got himself out. That at-bat killed what could have been a bases-loaded rally in the 7th.
What sort of damage could he have done swinging at this (5) on 3-1? It started a ball and wound up worse.
Those are bonus counts. You have to be more selective. #RedSox There isn't enough defensive value in the world to carry regular at-bats with what is now a .565 OPS.
The more vexing part of this for #RedSox fans is the club made itself purposely weaker in RF for 2022 just to take on two mid-tier prospects.
It's cost them games since April.

Would have been three outings in four days for Houck. Unlikely he's available unless they're ahead.

It feels like the decision was made when Boston obviously needed help in early July and didn't receive it.
