RED SOX NOTEBOOK Rich Hill encouraged by his productive rehab start in Double A Portland By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 29, 2022, 8:10 p.m.
Red Sox lefthander Rich Hill felt as if he put together a productive rehab start for the Double A Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday evening. Working his way back from a left knee sprain that landed him on the injured list retroactive to July 2, Hill went three innings, yielding a run on four hits (including a solo home run) while striking out five in a 10-5 victory over the host Hartford Yard Goats.
He threw 56 pitches, 40 for strikes.
“I feel really good,” Hill said Friday before the opener of a weekend set against the Brewers, which the Red Sox lost, 4-1. “I knew that it was going to be good when I threw the live batting practice here, and just the way that I was throwing the ball over the last few days.”
Hill, who went on the injured list following a truncated start against the Chicago Cubs July 1, said he could be activated and start Tuesday’s game in Houston against the Astros. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that’s still to be determined.
Hill now wears a brace on his left knee when he pitches in order to keep that area stabilized. This is nothing new to the 42-year-old veteran pitcher, who wore one in 2019 when he had a similar injury.
“If anything I feel like it helps me kind of post on my back leg a little bit more,” Hill said. “I feel like my pitches come out a little bit better. It keeps my leg from dropping too much.”
What’s the Story?
Trevor Story has not come along from his right hand bruise as quickly as the Red Sox had expected. The Sox second baseman is still feeling pain in his hand when he swings and will seek a second opinion.
“He didn’t feel like today he was progressing the right way,” Cora said. “We feel like there’s nothing structurally wrong with the hand. But [the second opinion] is kind of like to ease his mind.”
Story hasn’t played since he was struck in the hand on July 12 against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Story departed the ballpark and received X-rays which came back negative. Story did not play the final five games leading up to the All-Star break, and the Sox ultimately decided to place Story on the injured list on July 16 (retroactive to July 14).
Story was eligible to come back last Sunday for the series finale against the Blue Jays. The Red Sox were optimistic he would, in fact, return on that day, especially given the amount of time he had off.
But out of the All-Star break, Story was just tracking pitches. Yet Story did not swing a bat until that Sunday (the same day the Sox were shooting for him to be back in the lineup).
Story continued to take swings off a tee during the week, but still felt pain in his off-hand at the point of contact.
“It’s the impact,” Cora said. “It’s the top hand, so it’s just hard for him to let it go.” Draft picks signed
The Red Sox signed 12 more players that were selected in this year’s draft: outfielders Roman Anthony (second-round compensatory pick) and Deundre Jones (17th round); infielder Chase Meidroth (fourth round); catcher Brooks Brannon (ninth round); lefthanded pitchers Dalton Rogers (third round), Noah Dean (fifth round), Hayden Mullins (12th round), Nathan Landry (15th round), and Connor Butler (20th round); and righthanded pitchers Marques Johnson (11th round), Garrett Ramsey (16th round), and Jaret Godman (19th round). All will report to Fort Myers, Fla.
Devers getting close
Rafael Devers took batting practice at Fenway before the opener vs. the Brewers. There’s a very strong chance he’ll be activated Tuesday during the team’s upcoming series against the Astros in Houston. Devers went on the injured list on July 23 with right hamstring inflammation . . . Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) will take swings Saturday . . . Christian Arroyo (left groin strain) could rejoin the team in the coming days after playing in a rehab game for Portland Thursday . . . Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) will throw a simulated game Saturday, and will face Devers . . . Brian Johnson, who played for the Sox from 2015-19, was on the field for batting practice and caught up with Cora and some former teammates. The lefthander appeared in 38 games for the 2018 Sox, starting 13 times and posting a 4.17 ERA. Johnson’s 99⅓ innings were the fifth-most on the team. Johnson, 31, was released in 2020. He pitched in Triple A for the Angels last season, but has since retired and plans to finish his degree while coaching with former high school team.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 7h Brasier gave up the go-ahead hit on a 98 mph fastball. No matter the velocity, the fastball gets hit. So he's just gonna throw a million sliders - easily his most effective pitch. He threw 8 in a row at one point in the 8th.

Brew Crew @ Red Sox Saturday, 30th July 4pm @ Fenway
Lauer 6-3/3.84
Pivetta 8-7/4.35
Red Sox task Nick Pivetta with snapping slump vs. Brewers FLM
The Boston Red Sox will look to break out of their late-July funk as their three-game interleague series against the Milwaukee Brewers continues on Saturday afternoon.
With a 4-1 loss to Milwaukee on Friday in the series opener, Boston slipped to 2-6 during its homestand that began after the All-Star break. The Red Sox are 7-18 in July overall.
The Red Sox have allowed four or fewer runs in three of their past five games, but they averaged only 3.4 runs in those five contests. They went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position on Friday.
"(The Brewers') stuff is really good, but we just have to find a way (to score runs)," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "We haven't done a good job with runners in scoring position for like a month and a half."
Another contributing factor to Boston's cold spell is that its starting pitchers haven't recorded a single win in July. Nick Pivetta will look to change that on Saturday.
Pivetta (8-7, 4.35 ERA) put together his best start in nearly a month on Monday, holding the Cleveland Guardians scoreless until the fifth inning and totaling six strikeouts while yielding one run in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander didn't factor into the decision in an eventual 3-1 Red Sox win.
Pivetta, who will be making his team-leading 21st start of the season, allowed 20 runs in a three-start span prior to his most recent outing.
"He was better," Cora said after the Monday game. "Velocity was up, I think the curveball was good today, his slider was OK, but a lot better, better rhythm. I think the fastball, when he used it, was obviously at 94-95 (mph), but he went through some good spots and gave us a chance to win."
Pivetta has only started against Milwaukee once in his career, when he allowed nine runs on seven hits in five innings in a July 2017 outing as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Milwaukee left-hander Eric Lauer (6-3, 3.84) will face the Red Sox for the first time on Saturday while making his 100th appearance and 93rd start of his career. Most recently, Lauer allowed four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings during a no-decision against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
The Brewers are 11-7 in Lauer's starts, eight of which have been quality starts. However, Lauer has not won since June 17 in Cincinnati.
Milwaukee will look to build upon a strong late-innings performance on Friday. Christian Yelich had the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning, while Willy Adames went 3-for-5, breaking out of a 4-for-25 (.160) slump in the previous six games.
"I feel like that's the best baseball we play, in the late innings," Adames told Bally Sports Wisconsin on Friday. "I guess we get more focused in the late innings. It's been amazing that we play like that late in games because I feel like that's how you win, especially a (tight) game like tonight."
Yelich is 11-for-31 (.355) during his current eight-game hitting streak.
"I think Christian has been swinging the bat really well, getting on base a ton and being a really effective leadoff hitter," manager Craig Counsell said.
