Brew Crew @ Red Sox Friday, 29th July 2022 7pm @ Fenway
Woodruff 8-3/3.73
Bello 0-0/10.50
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Boston Red Sox Friday, July 29, 2022 at 7:10pm EDT Written by Mark Ruelle
The Milwaukee Brewers head to Boston over the weekend for a three-game set with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. This inter-league series will pit the first-place Brewers out of the NL Central Division taking on the last-place Red Sox out of the AL East Division. The pitching matchup in game 1 will feature right-hander Brandon Woodruff (8-3, 3.73) of the Brewers battling rookie right hander Brayan Bello (0-2, 10.50) of the Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 710pm EST.
Brewing Up a Winner The Milwaukee Brewers head into Fenway Park on Friday night with their lead in the NL Central Division growing as they heat up and the Cardinals falter. Milwaukee has won five out of six games including a sweep of a two-game set against AL Central Division leading Minnesota prior to heading to Boston. On Wednesday afternoon, the Brewers pounded the Twins 10-4 as ace Corbin Burnes struck out 11 Twins in six innings and first baseman Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of 3-run home runs in the runaway win. Milwaukee now leads the Cardinals by three games heading into the weekend.
The Brewers are getting things done with power; power pitching and power hitting. On the mound, the Brewers are second in MLB in strikeouts with 939. At the plate, the Brewers have compiled the fourth most home runs in baseball and are averaging 1.4 home runs per game. On the mound Friday night in Fenway will be veteran right-hander Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff has found his groove since a stint on the IL in the first half. In his five starts since returning from the IL, Woodruff is 3-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a whopping 39 strikeouts in just 28 innings pitched.
Sox Sinking When all is said and done, the Red Sox have had just one good month this season, the team's 20-6 June record is the only reason that they are respectable at this point. The Red Sox have not had a winning month in any other month thus far and have been beset by injuries throughout the season, particularly in the pitching staff. The Sox rotation was set to feature veterans Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, Rich Hill, Nick Pivetta and Michael Wacha. Instead, the Red Sox have been shipping out the likes of Brayan Bello, Josh Winckowski and last night's starter, Kutter Crawford. Not surprisingly, the Red Sox have dropped from second place down to last place in the AL East Division. On Thursday night, in the series finale with the Guardians, the Red Sox got a 3-run home run from all-star Xander Bogaerts and a quality start from Crawford on their way to a 4-2 win and a series split with the Guardians.
Not only have the Red Sox been playing shorthanded on the mound, they have been playing the past several games without their leader in home runs and average, Rafael Devers, and the team leader in RBI, Trevor Story. The two remain on the IL and have yet to be cleared. In addition, last year's leadoff hitter and 20 home run bat, Kike Hernandez, has been out for nearly two months with a hip issue. On the mound on Friday night for the Red Sox will be rookie right-hander Brayan Bello. Regarded as one of the Red Sox top prospects, it has been tough going for Bello at the major league level. He has made three starts thus far and lasted exactly four innings in each start. Bello has giving up 22 hits in his 12 innings work and allowed 14 runs while walking eight batters and striking out nine. It has been a rude debut for the youngster as he's been forced into action with the Red Sox depleted staff.
Brewers at Red Sox Friday, at 7:10 PM EST Partly Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 82° F with a 1% chance of rain and 9 MPH wind blowing out in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

Injuries & Moves: Hill strong in rehab start July 28th, 2022
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
July 28: LHP Rich Hill strong in rehab start for Double-A Portland In what might have been the only start of his Minor League rehab, Hill pitched three strong innings for Portland at Hartford, Conn. The veteran allowed one run on four hits while walking none and striking out five. Hill, who sprained his left knee while pitching at Wrigley Field on July 1, threw 56 pitches (40 strikes). Hill is 4-4 with a 4.20 ERA in 15 starts for the Red Sox this season. His 16th start could come early next week when Boston is in Houston.
INF/OF Christian Arroyo (left groin strain) Expected return: August Arroyo, who has bounced around the infield and outfield this season, started his Minor League rehab assignment for Double-A Portland on July 27. He started at second base and had an RBI single on July 28. Arroyo was injured in the July 8 game against the Yankees. He is hitting .224 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 42 games this season. Boston Red Sox injury updates: Trevor Story still feeling discomfort in hand when he swings

BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story, who is on the 10-day injured list with a right hand contusion, still is feeling some discomfort.
“He’s doing OK,” manager Alex Cora said Thursday here at Fenway Park. “He swung the bat yesterday. Today, nothing. So we’ll see how it goes over the weekend. Hopefully, he keeps trending in the right direction and we go from there.”
Story got hit in the hand while swinging at an 89 mph sinker from Corey Kluber in Tampa Bay on July 12.
“Where it got him, it was in a tough spot,” Cora said. “The swinging part of it, the top hand, has kind of been hard for him to feel comfortable with it. (If) he doesn’t feel comfortable to go out there and compete with his swing where he’s at, then there’s nothing we can do.”
Cora said Story has been a big loss, especially defensively. Story leads all AL qualified second basemen with 7 defensive runs saved.
“He had become the rock of the infield,” Cora said.
Other injuries:
~ Rich Hill (15-day IL, left knee sprain) will make a rehab start for Double-A Portland on Thursday. He’s scheduled to throw four innings.
~ Kiké Hernández (60-day IL, right hip flexor strain) will swing a bat Saturday for the first time since receiving a PRP injection.
“He’s been able to play catch and move around,” Cora said. “I think the first big test is Saturday when he swings a bat.”
~ Christian Arroyo (10-day IL, left groin strain) will play second base Thursday in a rehab game for Portland. He went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks Wednesday as the DH for the Sea Dogs.
~ Matt Barnes (60-day IL, right shoulder inflammation) will pitch in back-to-back rehab outings Thursday and Friday for Portland.
Cora said Barnes has showed improvement “stuff-wise.”
“He’s been able to bounce back, too, which is really important,” Cora said. “So these two are going to be really important.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story still on IL because of pain in injured hand By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 28, 2022, 8:27 p.m.
Trevor Story still isn’t a go for the Red Sox. Story went on the injured list with a right hand bruise on July 16 (retroactive to July 14). The Sox were hopeful their second baseman could come off the IL once eligible on July 24, yet that proved to be overly ambitious with Story — while progressing — still feeling pain in that hand.
“Where he got hit was in in a tough spot,” manager Alex Cora said before Thursday’s game against the Guardians. “So it’s just the swinging part of it. The top hand has been hard for him to feel comfortable. So, until he feels comfortable to go out there and compete with his swing with where he’s at, then there’s nothing we can do.”
Despite being on the injured list, Story still leads the team with 58 RBI. Yet where Story is missed the most, Cora said, is on defense where he had already racked up seven defensive runs saved, leading the league in that category at that position for most of the season.
“He became the rock of the infield,” said Cora. “He was the starting second baseman and it had been solid. So, we’ve been missing him.”
As of Thursday, Story had just taken swings off the tee and tracked pitches. Verdugo struggling
Alex Verdugo has had his moments this season, but his year at the plate is unlike his previous two seasons for the Red Sox. Verdugo came into Thursday hitting .265, not bad but still underwhelming considering Verdugo hit a combined .294 in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Where Verdugo undoubtedly has fallen flat is in his slugging percentage and OPS, which was .397 and .676 respectively before Thursday.
If you take a look at the numbers, Verdugo has been stellar on the fastball, batting .345 with a .497 slugging on 810 pitches. Against breaking pitches, however, Verdugo hit .167 with a .206 slugging percentage on 342 pitches. Last year, Verdugo hit .261 with a .420 slugging percentage on breaking pitches while keeping his batting average on heaters at .337, very similar to this season.
For Verdugo, it’s a matter of becoming too pull happy on the breaking pitches once he sees it, according to Sox hitting coach Peter Fatse.
“For me, Verdugo’s best swing is a line drive the other way,” Fatse said. “‘When he’s driving the ball on a line, I think his misses are better in general. I think sometimes, he’ll get a little bit too big or try to elevate the breaking ball. I think sometimes that caused him to get off the plane of the ball and that’s when you see the topped ground ball or the weak fly ball.”
Devers progressing
Cora is confident Rafael Devers (hamstring inflammation) will return from the IL once his 10 days are complete. Cora said Devers is taking batting practice and grounders on the field and is moving well. Devers would be eligible to come off the IL on Aug. 2, which would be the second game of the Houston Series at Minute Maid Park. Castiglione honored
The Red Sox celebrated Joe Castiglione’s 40 years in the broadcast booth as the team’s play-by-play announcer prior to Thursday series finale against the Guardians.
The Sox radio broadcast booth is now called Joe Castiglione Booth. Roger Clemens presented Castiglione with the plaque, honoring Castiglione’s achievement. Castiglione threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Jackie Bradley Jr.
“Just doing it for 40 years I can’t even imagine,” Cora said. “Obviously, he’s a very respected man, a great person. He brings joy to a lot of people here when he shows up. I love talking to him during pregame. To do it for 40 years, it’s a testament to who he is and I know everybody here is very proud of him.” Scoring change
Major League Baseball issued a scoring change from Tuesday night’s game. The run scored by Owen Miller in the second inning after a double error by Franchy Cordero is now unearned for Nate Eovaldi.

Red Sox notes: Nathan Eovaldi hoping Chaim Bloom is a buyer at the trade deadline Eovaldi is in final year of four-year, $68-million contract
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: July 28, 2022 at 5:55 p.m. | UPDATED: July 28, 2022 at 6:19 p.m.
Four years ago, the Red Sox sent left-handed prospect Jalen Beeks to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a hard-throwing right-hander who helped them win a World Series.
This time around, Nathan Eovaldi could be heading in the other direction.
The 32-year-old wasn’t particularly sharp over his six innings of three-run ball in the Sox’ 7-6 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday night, but later pleaded his case that the Sox should be buyers, not sellers, ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
“I don’t think we ever doubt ourselves,” Eovaldi said. “Being in this situation and being in this division, having the three teams in the wild card this year, there’s a lot of different things that come into play. I think we have a lot of guys that are still coming back (from the injured list).
“Right now we’re scuffling a little bit. We’re trying to piece together some things, a lot of moving parts, but I feel like we have the team to do it. It’s all about getting hot at the right time. I think everyone has seen what we’re capable of when we get hot.”
Eovaldi may not have more time to prove it.
He’s scheduled to pitch next on Monday in Houston, but if the Red Sox keep skidding – as they probably will, given half the team is still on the injured list and Alex Cora’s crew is struggling to make simple defensive plays – Eovaldi could be on his way out of town before then.
He’s in the final year of his four-year, $68-million contract that he signed shortly after winning the 2018 World Series. The Sox could hold onto him and either attempt to negotiate an extension or make him a one-year qualifying offer, which, assuming Eovaldi rejects it, would guarantee the team a pick after the fourth round in next year’s first-year player draft.
But Eovaldi is hoping the Red Sox are buyers, not sellers, before Tuesday’s deadline.
“When we’re healthy, we’re fully capable of going out there with the guys that we have,” he said. “But when guys are not healthy, and as many as we have hurt right now, and the pieces that we have coming back, it would be nice to have more guys coming in and filling in other situations and other roles.”
This team needed help weeks ago. Their lack of major league quality first basemen has been a glaring necessity for a long time. All the players can do now is cross their fingers that the front office acts aggressively.
“Right now we’re talking about getting rid of our big name guys, and we definitely don’t want that to happen,” Eovaldi said. “We understand as players that it’s part of the business and things are out of your control, but at the same time, having the front office show the faith that they believe in us and going out there and getting the guys that we need to better ourselves down the road, it definitely gives us that encouragement.” Three sent to Portland
A few of the Sox’ role players are on their way back.
Lefty starter Rich Hill, righty reliever Matt Barnes and utility man Christian Arroyo were all sent out on a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Thursday night.
Hill has been out with a knee injury, though could be an impact pitcher down the stretch, given his tendency to be much better in the second half throughout his career.
Arroyo has been missed at second base, where the Sox have used some combination of Yolmer Sanchez and Jeter Downs while they wait for Trevor Story to return from a hand injury.
Story has been taking batting practice but it remains uncomfortable for him to swing
“Where it got him was in a tough spot,” Cora said. “The swinging part, the top hand, it has been hard for him to feel comfortable. So until he feels comfortable to go out and compete with his swing, there’s nothing we can do.”
Barnes is an interesting case. He was an All-Star closer last year, but got lit up at the All-Star Game, signed an $18.75-million extension and hasn’t looked the same since.
On the injured list since May 30 with shoulder inflammation, he’s made six minor league appearances while on a rehab assignment and has a 9.53 ERA and 2.47 WHIP.
Still, Cora said the team feels like Barnes is getting better.
“Stuff wise, yeah,” he said. “He’s been able to bounce back too, which is important. So these two are going to be really important but so far he’s been good.” New home for Benintendi
Upon hearing that former Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi was traded by the Royals to the Yankees for three minor leaguers, Cora said, “Good for him.”
“He worked hard the last two years to make adjustments and get back to the hitter everybody envisioned in the past, a .300 hitter that will get on base, an excellent baserunner,” the manager said. “Defensively, he’s been amazing in Kansas City. For the person, I’m very happy. For the player, we’ll leave it at that.”
Cora has often compared Alex Verdugo to Benintendi, as the two left-handed hitting left fielders have a similar tendency to make contact and hit for average, but can get into trouble when they try hitting for power.
The Sox traded him to the Royals before the 2021 season, with two years left on his contract, and received Franchy Cordero, Josh Winckowski and three low-level minor leaguers, while the Royals received three pitching prospects, including the Yankees’ No. 13-ranked prospect, Beck Way, with just two months remaining on Benintendi’s contract.

Brandon Woodruff, Brewers bring hot streaks to Boston FLM
Milwaukee right-hander Brandon Woodruff will look to extend his run of success when the visiting Brewers open up a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Since returning from the injured list in late June, Woodruff (8-3, 3.73 ERA) has gone 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA across five starts. He lasted six innings in three of those outings and allowed more than two runs just once.
"The injury probably set us back a little bit, but I think in the end the injury's going to help Brandon be really effective the rest of the year," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "He's relatively fresh, throwing the ball really, really well."
"Very happy to hand him the ball every five days."
Woodruff will be presented with a golden opportunity to keep rolling, as he goes head-to-head with a rookie who has yet to find his footing in the major leagues, Boston right-hander Brayan Bello.
Bello (0-2, 10.50 ERA) has pitched exactly four innings while allowing at least four runs in each of his three starts with the Red Sox after spending most of the season at Triple-A Worcester.
In his most recent outing, the 23-year-old allowed five runs on nine hits and took a loss against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
And things might not get easier for Bello on Friday with a red-hot Brewers lineup coming to town.
Both starting pitchers will be facing the opponent for the first time.
Milwaukee is coming off a six-game homestand in which it went 5-1 and scored an average of seven runs per game. The Brewers did a good portion of their damage with the long ball, mashing 12 home runs, three of which came in a 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.
Third baseman Luis Urias has been one of the most consistent offensive contributors during that stretch.
He is riding a six-game winning streak in which he is 8-for-21 (.381) with two homers and seven RBIs. Christian Yelich has also found a nice groove, as he takes a seven-game hitting streak with him to Boston.
The Red Sox's offense has been trending in the opposite direction, but Boston salvaged a split of its four-game series with the Cleveland Guardians thanks to a 4-2 win on Thursday.
Prior to the victory, Boston had lost five of six since the All-Star break and 11 of 13 overall.
With the recent lack of success, Boston could become sellers at the Tuesday trade deadline.
"We've been through a lot this year. We've been through a lot in the beginning, we've been going through a lot now," shortstop Xander Bogaerts said. "Everyone wants to stay together, no one wants to separate. Those decisions aren't up to us, but the only way we can help that a little bit (is) if we continue to win games."
With their loss to Cleveland on Wednesday, the Red Sox fell under .500 for the first time since June 4. However, they responded with a win less than 24 hours later and will now attempt to reclaim a winning record.
Posting back-to-back victories has been no easy task for the Red Sox of late, though, as they have not done so since July 9-10, when they took two in a row against the New York Yankees.
