Pete Abraham @peteabe · 14h Garrett Whitlock for Portland tonight: 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K 81/56.
He's ready to start Tuesday at Tampa Bay. Encouraging. Getting Whitlock and Bello back should go a long way in improving our depth, both in the rotation and in the bullpen.Paxton as well. I'm not sure it will matter too much who starts and who relieves, but replacing Crawford, Ort, and probably Kelly, with Bello, Whitlock & Paxton, would make this a pretty decent pitching staff.

Alex Cora gives Red Sox rotation updates on Brayan Bello, James Paxton, Garrett Whitlock

DETROIT — Red Sox lefty James Paxton (returning from a hamstring strain) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester in Buffalo on Sunday. Brayan Bello (returning from forearm tightness) will make a rehab start for Worcester at Polar Park on Tuesday.
Garrett Whitlock, who allowed just one hit and one run in a rehab start for Double-A Portland on Thursday, is expected to be activated from the 10-day IL to start Tuesday in Tampa Bay vs. the Rays.
The goal is for Paxton to throw 4 innings and Bello to throw 6 innings in their rehab starts for the WooSox. Bello would be built up enough to return to the Red Sox starting rotation early the following week. But Cora wouldn’t say if Tuesday will be Bello’s final rehab start.
“Not sure,” Cora said. “We’ll talk about it. But everything is going well so far. So obviously let him pitch Tuesday and then see how it goes, how we feel about it and then we’ll make a decision.”
The Red Sox aren’t ready to say how many more rehab starts Paxton will need. But he’s getting close too. Cora said they will talk about it after Paxton is done pitching Sunday.
He’ll head to Boston after his start in Buffalo.
“I don’t think he’ll fly to Tampa and then we’ll decide what we do,” Cora said.
Rearranging the rotation
Cora said Thursday he plans to flip flop Chris Sale and Corey Kluber in the starting rotation.
Kluber pitched one game ahead of Sale in the rotation the first two turns through. But Cora likely will use Sale on Wednesday and Kluber on Thursday in Tampa.
It’s a way of splitting up the two righties, Whitlock and Kluber, with the left-handed Sale in between.

Injured Red Sox reliever ‘not responding the way we thought’ he would, Alex Cora says

DETROIT — Wyatt Mills, a right-handed sidearmer who the Red Sox acquired from the Royals in the offseason, is behind in his rehab program, manager Alex Cora said.
Mills pitched in a spring training game March 13, then was shut down because of elbow inflammation.
“He hasn’t started his throwing program. Not responding the way we thought at the beginning,” Cora said Saturday at Comerica Park. “So we’ve just got to keep working.”
A source during spring training said the issue is muscular.
Mills allowed four runs on four hits, one walk and one hit batsman in one inning vs. the Blue Jays in his final spring training outing before being shut down. He had pitched well before that, allowing no earned runs, just three hits and four walks while striking out eight in 5 innings (four outings).

The Red Sox traded for the sidearmer Dec. 16 hopeful that he will be able to follow in John Schreiber’s footsteps and have a breakout season in 2023. He has the same arm angle and repertoire (four-seam fastball, slider and sinker) as Schreiber.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 28m Brayan Bello scheduled to start for Worcester on Tuesday with the goal of going six innings.
Cora wouldn’t commit to his coming off the IL after that, but seems pretty likely he would.
"Let him pitch Tuesday and we'll see how it goes and how we feel about it."
Alex Cora said he watched a lot of games on television yesterday and thought there were an unusual amount of wild pitches.
Maybe he's on to something. There were an average of 1,752 WPs the last three full seasons. On pace for 1,968 this season

Tigers Place Austin Meadows On 10-Day Injured List
By Mark Polishuk | April 8, 2023 at 2:44pm CDT
The Tigers placed outfielder Austin Meadows on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 7) due to anxiety. Akil Baddoo was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move.
President of baseball operations Scott Harris released a statement in regards to the transaction, saying that “the Tigers fully support Austin’s decision to step away from the team and prioritize his mental health. As an organization, we have taken many steps to provide and destigmatize mental health resources, and we will do more to help our players tackle the mental and physical challenges they face on a daily basis. We commend Austin for confronting these challenges head-on and ask for our fans in supporting him through every step of his journey back to the field.”
Meadows dealt with similar issues at the end of last season, saying in September that “I hope in sharing my experience I can touch at least one person who might be going through their own struggles and encourage them to reach out to someone for help.” Just prior to the start of Spring Training, Meadows gave a positive update about both his mental and physical health, yet that battle is obviously still ongoing. As Harris’ statement indicated, the Tigers will surely give Meadows all the time he needs to get himself to a better place with his anxiety. We at MLB Trade Rumors wish Meadows all the best in his recovery.
The Rays traded Meadows to Detroit for Isaac Paredes just prior to the start of the 2022 season, and Meadows appeared in only 36 games in his first year with the Tigers. Beyond his mental health struggles, Meadows also spent on the injured list with strains in both of his Achilles tendons, vertigo-like symptoms, and a bout of COVID-19. The result was a .250/.347/.328 slash line over 147 plate appearances, but among all Detroit players with at least 140 PA, Meadows’ 101 wRC+ still ranked second on the team in an overall disastrous offensive year for Tigers hitters.
