'He's got some oppo juice:' Devers has 13th multi-HR game Sox slugger hits slam, solo HR; Duvall, Tapia each homer as Boston takes series in Detroit April 8th, 2023
Steve Kornacki
DETROIT -- Walks will come back to haunt you -- especially with Rafael Devers lurking in the on-deck circle.
Devers came to bat in the second inning with the bases loaded, and connected for his fifth career grand slam to tip the game in favor of the Red Sox, who went on to a 14-5 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Comerica Park. He later pulled a solo home run for his 13th career multi-homer game and fourth blast of the season.
Boston (4-4) scored six runs on two hits in the second to blow the game open early, capitalizing on four walks from left-handed starter Joey Wentz, who was relieved after the last of those free passes.
Right-hander Garrett Hill was summoned from the bullpen with two outs and the bases loaded. Devers got ahead, 2-1, in the count, and Hill threw a changeup on the low, outside corner.
Not a bad pitch.
Unless you’re facing a left-handed hitter who is one of the game’s best, and who can handle anything. Devers went the other way, driving the ball solidly and over the head of left fielder Akil Baddoo.
Neither Red Sox manager Alex Cora nor center fielder Adam Duvall -- who later drilled a two-run homer -- could figure out how Devers hit that ball over the fence.
“I have no idea how he can do that,” said Cora. “It was a pitch that was going away and he stays inside and gets barrel. He drives it that way. He saw a few off-speed pitches and swung and missed at a fastball. But just to be able to do that -- that’s impressive.”
Duvall and Devers became the first teammates in the Majors to both reach four homers this season.
What has Duvall learned from Devers in their first season as teammates?
“Well, I know he’s got some oppo juice,” said Duvall. “If I could learn some of that, that would be nice. Just the professional at-bat. He can always hurt you and do damage.”
Devers smiled when their comments were relayed, and said through an interpreter: “They were working me a little bit different. I missed the fastball the previous pitch and I was trying to look for another pitch, and I was able to get to that pitch and hit it out of the ballpark. That’s a pitch I’ve been looking for a lot lately.”
Devers hit his second homer in the seventh off left-handed reliever Tyler Alexander. He pulled a cut fastball on the high, inside corner.
“I try to adjust to the pitcher and those things are going to happen if you adjust well to the pitcher,” said Devers. “That’s a good result on that pitch.”
Devers, who was signed to a $17.5 million contract in the offseason before he inked a 10-year deal worth $313.5 million, drilled both pitches at the exact opposite areas of the strike zone into the seats -- once again showing his versatility to hit any pitch anywhere.
He’s a solid 6-foot and 240 pounds, and possesses great balance, hands and a feel for the strike zone. Put it all together and it spells power. He also noted that he lifts weights after each game, doing so again Saturday before talking to reporters.
Duvall’s two-run blast went 423 feet to left-center and traveled at a blistering 109.8 mph.
What impresses Duvall's manager most about his approach?
“Honestly, the patience,” said Cora. “We knew that he could hit a ball hard in the air to the pull side, but he’s been getting in good hitter counts. A 1-0 fastball, he put on a good swing. This is not just a swinger -- a big guy that hits the ball hard. He’s a quality at-bat."
Duvall grinned when Cora’s comment was repeated.
“I don’t really think of myself as a patient person,” said Duvall. “But I’ve been able to focus in on where I’m looking and what I’m looking for, and be able to lay off anything else. It’s cool to see I can have some patience.”
Duvall is coming off AL Player of the Week honors. He’s as hot as any hitter in the game, and entered the game leading the league in batting average (now .483), RBIs (14) and extra-base hits (10) with a monstrous OPS of 1.683.
Devers is batting .343 with nine RBIs. Together they drove in seven runs on Saturday.

Red Sox @ Tigers Sunday, April 9th 2023 1pm @ Comerica Park
Crawford 0-1/15.75
Boyd 0-0/ 4.15
Matthew Boyd back home in Detroit to face Red Sox FLM
Matthew Boyd was a starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers from 2015-21.
After one season with the Seattle Mariners, he is back in the Tigers' rotation.
The left-hander will make his first start at Detroit's Comerica Park since Aug. 29, 2021, on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Boyd, who is 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA this season, underwent surgery that September to repair the flexor tendon in his left arm. He signed with San Francisco as a free agent after the 2021 season but was traded to Seattle before his season debut. He made 10 relief appearances for the Mariners, going 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 13 1/3 innings.
He re-signed with Detroit during the offseason on a one-year, $10 million contract.
"We love Matt Boyd," manager A.J. Hinch said. "Even though he was only a year away, it felt like a long time since he had been back. This is a different team and different organization than it was when he was a Tiger previously."
The Tigers brought back Boyd to provide another veteran in the rotation. In his season debut, Boyd allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings at Houston on Monday.
"He's got real weapons," Hinch said. "He can get both sides (lefties and righties) out. The swing and miss in the spring was really good. He's another starter than we're trying to ramp into the season a tick slow to preserve the transition from his injury to the bullpen and back to the rotation. But I feel good the day he pitches."
Boyd is 2-2 with a 5.18 ERA in five career starts against Boston.
The Red Sox will counter on Sunday with right-hander Kutter Crawford (0-1, 15.75 ERA), who was battered in his season debut by Pittsburgh on Monday, giving up seven runs in four innings.
"I thought it was pretty awful," Crawford said. "Physically I felt good, but just didn't command the ball like I need to. Didn't execute pitches when I needed to. ... Just not a good performance on my part."
Crawford has thrown only one-third of an inning in his career against the Tigers, giving up three runs and three hits.
The Red Sox have won the first two games of this series, thanks to the big bats of Rafael Devers and Adam Duvall. Devers has three homers in the series, including a pair on Saturday in a 14-5 Boston romp. Devers hit his fifth career grand slam to highlight a six-run second inning, and Duvall added a pair of doubles in the game.
Duvall is batting .483 with four homers and 14 RBIs this season.
"That's my job, just to slug and drive runners in," said Duvall, who signed a one-year, $7 million contract with Boston as a free agent during the offseason. "So it feels good to come in and do your job. We had some extra base hits today, and we've just got to keep the bats rolling."
Detroit started a left-hander, Joey Wentz, on Saturday, so Red Sox manager Alex Cora will use a similar lineup against Boyd for the series finale. He has Rob Refsnyder, who drove in two runs on Saturday, in the leadoff spot against lefties.
"We've got to mix and match with lefties," Cora said. "We've got a lot of them coming up -- one tomorrow, three in Tampa and three more against the Angels. We've just got to find ways to mix and match, and it starts with Ref. You put Ref in the leadoff spot in front of those (sluggers) and he's going to do everything possible to get on base."

Why Alex Cora thinks Red Sox’s Triston Casas could benefit from facing upcoming lefties

DETROIT — Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas has struggled early, going only 3-for-23 (.130) in seven games.
And it could be tough for the rookie left-handed hitter to get in a groove offensively over the next week with the Red Sox facing mostly left-handed starters.
But manager Alex Cora thinks facing lefties might actually benefit Casas who is batting eighth Sunday against Tigers left-lander Matthew Boyd. It will be the first time Casas has started a game this season against a lefty starter.
“I honestly believe that he’s going to benefit from it because as a left-handed hitter against a lefty, you’ve gotta make sure you see the baseball,” Cora said Sunday at Comerica Park. “We’ve faced two (lefty starters) already and we wanted to get Ref (Rob Refsnyder) at-bats there. But put him out there today and hopefully, he can stay back and get back to that left-center gap and get in line to what he usually does (which) is track pitches and drive them to left-center.”
The Red Sox will face three left-handed starters — Josh Fleming, Shane McClanahan and Jeffrey Springs — during their four-game series in Tampa Bay starting Monday. The popular Red Sox Stats Twitter account also noted Boston might face four left-handed starters Friday-Sunday when they return to Fenway to play the Angels.
Casas has a .370 on-base percentage in 27 plate appearances (four hit, six walks) against lefties in his big league career so far.
“He’s not going to play all of them but he’ll play during the week,” Cora said. “And hopefully today he can hang in there with Boyd, use the whole field, take a few pitches and start something good for him.”
