Marlins @ Red Sox Tuesday, 27th June 2023 7pm @ Fenway
Alcantra 2-6/ 5.08 vs
Whitlock 4-2/ 4.50
Red Sox have tough trek ahead, starting with Marlins FLM
With the MLB All-Star break approaching in two weeks, a crucial stretch of games stands ahead for the Boston Red Sox.
After dropping a three-game set to one of the worst teams in the American League in the Chicago White Sox, Boston returns home for a three-game interleague series with the Miami Marlins beginning Tuesday night.
The series begins a stretch of nine straight games for Boston against teams currently in playoff position. The Red Sox had won six straight before dropping four of five games, including Sunday's 4-1 series finale in Chicago.
"It's just baseball. That's the way it works," Boston infielder Justin Turner said. "You can go out there and beat up on really good pitchers and sometimes pitchers that on paper that you're supposed to beat up pitch really well. ... We had a winning streak going but can't take anything for granted."
Turner has reached base multiple times in nine of his past 15 games.
In Sunday's game, the Red Sox managed just two hits after the third inning. Outfielder Adam Duvall had two of the team's five hits.
"There's a lot of good teams out there," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "We've just got to play good baseball."
The Marlins are one of those strong clubs, entering Monday with the third-best record in the National League. Garrett Whitlock (4-2, 4.50 ERA) will be the first Boston starter to face them in the series.
Whitlock, who has never started against Miami, has worked seven innings in back-to-back starts but took a no-decision after allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six last Wednesday at Minnesota. His past three decisions dating back a month have been wins.
In the series opener, the Red Sox will be up against a tough starter in reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara (2-6, 5.08).
Alcantara will look to follow up yet another impressive performance by 20-year-old rookie Eury Perez, who struck out nine and extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 21 in Sunday's 2-0 win over Pittsburgh.
Miami has 16 wins during the month of June, including three of the past four games.
"It's been a lot of fun. Winning is fun," Perez said. "So we've got to continue winning a lot of games. Our next step is the playoffs. That will be the next step. (I) want to stay healthy so I can continue competing with all my teammates and win more games."
Leading the way offensively, second baseman Luis Arraez enters the series with a .399 average, falling below the .400 mark after back-to-back one-hit games. He has not struck out since June 14.
Despite Alcantara's overall struggles, he has pitched at least seven innings in three of his past four outings and six in total this season.
However, he has given up five runs and 10 hits in each of his two most recent games. All five runs in his start against Toronto last Wednesday came in the second inning.
"I'm going to bet on Sandy. Our clubhouse is going to bet on Sandy," Miami manager Skip Schumaker said. "Obviously, we need him to be that version (from the end of the game) moving forward if we want to get to where we want to get to."
Alcantara's only career start against Boston was on Sept. 15, 2020, working six innings of one-run ball.

How much do all those errors cost the Red Sox? A lot, actually. By Julian Benbow Globe Staff,Updated June 26, 2023, 1 hour ago
For most of the last offseason, the Red Sox agonized over the reality that not only would they not be able to agree to terms with Xander Bogaerts, the homegrown shortstop who had played all 10 years of his career for the franchise, but also that they would have to explain the loss of a mainstay to their fan base.
“It’s really hard when you lose a player like Xander, but it’s even harder when you lose a person like Xander,” Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy said at the time. “Do you wish you could have homegrown stars from start to finish? Of course you do. But unfortunately that’s not the reality of this business all the time.”
The Sox lost a player who had been on two World Series winners and become one of the franchise’s faces. But they also lost stability at one of the most important positions on the field.
Kennedy and chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom vowed to build a playoff-caliber roster, but plans hit a snag when Trevor Story, the most likely replacement for Bogaerts at shortstop, had right elbow surgery in January. The Sox then turned to Kiké Hernández, trusting a player known for his versatility to transition into an everyday role.
But 79 games into the season, the Sox are second in the majors in errors with 53, and shortstop has been their biggest trouble spot.
Some of the errors have been embarrassing and some have been forgettable. Taken as a whole, the breakdowns have come to identify the Sox as they sit in last place in the AL East, with the 13 games between them and first-place Rays feeling like an ocean.
The Sox have used 44 players in the field, and 15 of them have committed at least one error. Hernández leads the majors with 14.
The total is by far a career high for Hernández. He had spent most of his career in the outfield (527 games), and his work there was pretty clean (just nine errors).
This season, he has played 55 games at shortstop — already a career high — and all of his errors have come at that position.
Over Bogaerts’s tenure at shortstop, the position was relatively dependable. His career high for errors was 17 (2019), and the Sox never used more than seven players at shortstop in a season while Bogaerts was on the roster. They’ve already used seven shortstops this year, most in the majors.
Along with dependability up the middle, clean fielding has come to be expected at Fenway. Since 2012, the Sox have had fewer than 100 errors every season except 2012 (101), 2017 (107), and 2021 (108).
They are on pace to commit 112 errors this season, which would be their most since the 2010 team made 113.
Mistakes happen. But they come at a price. The Sox’s 53 errors have turned into 33 unearned runs, fourth-most in baseball. They’re 17-21 when they commit an error and they’re 9-13 when they give up an unearned run.
It goes without saying that giving opponents extra outs and unearned runs makes it difficult to win. The only team with a .500 record this season in games in which they give up an unearned run is the Mets (6-6). The only teams since 2021 with winning records when they’ve given up an earned run are the Padres last season (17-16) and the Giants in 2021 (24-22).
Twenty-two of the Red Sox’ errors have come in the seventh inning or later. Ten have come with the game tied (they lost eight of those games). Five came when they were holding a one-run lead (they lost three of those) and another five came when they were down one (they lost three of those, too). The errors are more common when they’re trailing (24) than when they’re up (19).
As a former player whose sure-handed fielding allowed him to play 14 major league seasons, manager Alex Cora takes pride in defense. However, his time as Sox manager has been marked by below-average fielding. In the six seasons since Cora became manager in 2018 (and counting 2020, when Ron Roenicke was interim manager), the Sox have committed 456 errors and allowed 302 unearned runs. The errors are the ninth-most in that span according to Statspass and the unearned runs rank 10th.
Those numbers compare unfavorably to previous eras. In five seasons under John Farrell (2013-17), the Sox committed 451 errors (22d) and gave up 276 unearned runs (13). In 2012, Bobby Valentine’s lone season as manager, the Sox committed 101 errors (17th) and allowed 52 unearned runs (19th). During Terry Francona’s eight-year run from 2004-11, the Sox committed 744 errors (26th) and allowed 450 unearned runs (21th).
For his part, Cora has taken responsibility, calling the Sox’ play sloppy, implementing more defensive work before games, and making lineup changes to put the most solid gloves on the field.

Ah that is why I chuckle when one of the scribes tweets the Red Sox are doing IF practice before the game means jack shit.
The defense in Boston has been loosey goosey for a while now. Thinking they can mash other teams/ out pitch them sure as hell is not working.
They have better not be taking this Marlins team for granted.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK The Red Sox are remarkably average, and their inability to close out series sweeps is a big reason why By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 26, 2023, 7:46 p.m.
The Red Sox couldn’t generate much offense when it mattered in their seven-game road trip against the Twins and White Sox. They struck out 18 times with men in scoring position, third-most in the majors in that span, and hit just .236.
“We had chances,” manager Alex Cora said after Sunday’s loss to the White Sox. “We just didn’t put the ball in play. We haven’t hit with men in scoring position the last two days.”
Keep in mind, the Red Sox couldn’t make an out in those situations during their recent series at Fenway against the Yankees, hitting .432 while scoring a whopping 24 runs and striking out just four times.
There’s a trend with this club, largely based around its inability to pull away or bury an opponent. Just take a look at their last two calendar months.
The Sox have reached seven games over .500 on May 6 when they beat the Phillies to improve to 21-14. But after taking two of the first three games, the Sox failed to finish the sweep, dropping the series finale. The Red Sox escaped a Braves team that, from top to bottom, is the best team in baseball, with a series split. Then they got spanked by the struggling Cardinals, resulting in a sweep. The Sox went on to win series vs. the Mariners and Padres, improving to 26-20. They had a chance to return to seven games over .500 but lost the series finale to San Diego.
The Red Sox were subsequently swept by the Angels, swiped two out of three from the Diamondbacks — but again a series sweep eluded them on the final day of the series — before losing a series to the Reds. The Sox then dropped consecutive series to the Rays and Guardians. Boston’s series win over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium provided some optimism, yet that didn’t last following a Rockies’ series victory.
Optimism returned when they swept the Yankees at Fenway. The feel-good vibes were back. But not for long. They won the first two games against the Twins, only to end up splitting the four-game set after two straight losses. The Sox came out victorious in their first game against the White Sox Friday, but dropped the next two en route to a series loss.
“Unfortunately, we’re right about a .500 team,” Rob Refsnyder said Sunday. “We’ve been kind of going back and forth between winning and losing. So yeah, we gotta figure it out. We have a little bit of a homestand. So take the off day Monday, figure some stuff out and get it going.”
As Hall of Famer football coach Bill Parcells famously said: “You are what your record says you are.”
That, to some extent, could be argued. But only for the teams that were supposed to be good.
The Red Sox were 15-13 in April, 13-13 in May, and, to this point, 12-12 in June.
Their overall record is 40-39. The Sox are just about an average team so far, teetering on below average. Going big fish hunting
The Red Sox invite the Marlins to Fenway for a three-game set beginning Tuesday. The Sox will send Garrett Whitlock to the mound against 2022 National League Cy Young winner Sandy Alcántara in the series opener followed by — likely — a bullpen game Wednesday while the Marlins toss lefthander Braxton Garrett. The Sox will see another lefthander in Jesús Luzardo for the series finale Thursday against Brayan Bello. The Marlins are 45-34 this season and 7-3 in their last 10 games.
