Self-inflicted damage via defensive miscues sinks Sox vs. Fish 3:29 AM ADT Molly Burkhardt
Molly Burkhardt @mollyburkhardt
BOSTON -- Ahead of the series opener against the Marlins, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom discussed the makeup of this year's club. They have solid pitching and a decent, albeit streaky, offense. But on defense?
“Defensively is where we need to tighten up the most, that’s no secret,” Bloom told MLB.com. “Just need to watch us play for a little to see that.”
Though the official scorer didn’t charge them with any errors, the Red Sox had several defensive miscues in their 10-1 loss to Miami on Tuesday night at Fenway Park. The defeat snapped a streak of 10 straight wins over the Marlins at home dating back to 2009, their longest such streak against a National League team.
“We've got to keep talking to them,” manager Alex Cora said. “We talked about it today and we did it again, and we’ll talk about it tomorrow. That’s the only way we can do it. We can take all the infield [practice] in the world and take ground balls like we’ve been doing since Spring Training -- there’s nothing new.
“We’ve been doing this from the get-go. But decisions in the game, we've got to be smarter. And it’s on us to keep talking and keep preaching and keep showing them. And hopefully we can start making better decisions out there.”
The first mistake came in the top of the second on a bouncing ground ball hit by Joey Wendle to shortstop David Hamilton. The 25-year-old infielder, ranked as Boston’s No. 26 prospect per MLB Pipeline, made a sliding stop and fired the ball to first baseman Triston Casas, who had to lay out to make an attempt at a play. Wendle went 4-for-4 on the night, with his four hits having expected batting averages of .110, .150, .170 and .350.
The next inning, Jean Segura reached first after grounding into a fielder's choice. Second baseman Kiké Hernández fielded the ball, firing to Hamilton for the out at second before Hamilton lobbed a high throw to Casas. In the fourth, Wendle singled when his liner caught the glove of Casas and skipped toward the outfield grass. Wendle came around to score two batters later. Casas again had to lay out in the sixth, when Rafael Devers fielded a 67.7 mph ball hit by Bryan De La Cruz. Devers made an off-the-mark throw to first, resulting in a single for De La Cruz.
“It’s tough to kind of put a stop to things when they are rolling,” Casas said. “But it’s not for a lack of effort -- it’s not for a lack of concentration. Like I keep saying: All our uniforms are dirty, we’re out there going hard. Sometimes the ball -- it’s hard to grip out of the glove and it’s hard to throw across the diamond. Balls spin different ways. That’s the game, it’s just about who can be the cleanest fundamentally.”
Entering Tuesday, the Red Sox ranked last in the Majors with -23 outs above average. The next-closest team? The Twins with -17 OAA. Per FanGraphs, Boston’s -12.3 defensive value is sixth worst, with Miami’s -18.1 mark ranking the worst.
The Sox have committed the second-most errors in the Majors with 53, behind just the Giants (58). Hernández leads the team with 14 errors, surpassing his previous career high as an infielder of five in a season. Devers (eight errors) has the second most on the team, followed by Enmanuel Valdez and Connor Wong, who have each made six. Get the latest from the Red Sox
“You’re not going to make every single play, but we need to make routine plays routine,” Bloom said, “and just make sure we are backing up our pitchers with the support that they’ve deserved for a while now.”
Three of Boston’s four defensive misplays came with starter Garrett Whitlock on the mound. After giving up four runs over seven innings in his previous outing against Minnesota, Whitlock was tagged for six runs on 11 hits (including two homers) over 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander didn’t issue a walk and he matched a season high with seven strikeouts.
“When we play good defense, we win games,” Cora said. “When we give the opposition an extra 90 [feet], we don’t make plays, we don’t turn double plays, we put ourselves in a bad spot. Our pitchers, for how good they are, they’re not a swing-and-miss staff, and we have to make plays. And we have to make sure we limit the damage, and we didn’t do it today.”

Injuries & Moves: Houck undergoes surgery June 27th, 2023 LATEST NEWS
June 27: RHP Tanner Houck undergoes surgery Houck underwent a successful open reduction and internal fixation of a right orbito-zygomatico-maxillary complex fracture at Mass General Hospital on Tuesday, the Red Sox announced. Manager Alex Cora said that Houck is still in the hospital, and the team will have a better understanding of the right-hander's timetable for return within the week.
June 27: OF Alex Verdugo reinstated from bereavement list; INF Bobby Dalbec optioned to Triple-A Worcester Dalbec struck out in his only at-bat after being recalled on Friday, though he has hit .296 this season with Worcester while ranking among the International League's leaders in home runs (18), slugging percentage (.638) and OPS (1.052). Verdugo last played on Wednesday, and the team went 1-3 in his absence.
June 25: James Paxton (right knee soreness) 'feeling well' after treatment Manager Alex Cora said Paxton, who exited his start Saturday with right knee soreness, is "feeling well" after getting treatment. The veteran lefty lasted four innings against the White Sox.
"Everything is lined up for him to start on Friday [against the Blue Jays]," Cora said. "We'll see how he keeps reacting to the treatment. But that's where we're at right now."
On Saturday, Paxton said he initially felt the issue in the later innings of his prior start, June 19 against the Twins. He described it as "a little bit of soreness" in his front, landing leg. He and the training staff worked on it between outings and will continue doing so.
Paxton and Cora each expressed confidence that the southpaw would make his next start. Cora already said before Saturday's game that Paxton would likely get an extra day between outings, which lines him up for Friday's series opener vs. Toronto.
LHP Joely Rodríguez (left shoulder inflammation) Expected return: Late June Rodríguez started a Minor League rehab assignment on June 20 for Triple-A Worcester, allowing two hits and striking out one over two-thirds of an inning. He then allowed three hits and one run in two-thirds of an inning on June 23. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on June 27 that the lefty will make a rehab appearance later this week with Double-A Portland during its road trip to New Hampshire. (Last updated: June 27)
LHP Richard Bleier (left shoulder inflammation) Expected return: July Bleier threw a bullpen session on June 27, according to manager Alex Cora. The Red Sox are still monitoring Bleier's progress and have not given a timetable for his return to the club. (Last updated: June 27)

Garrett Whitlock blitzed for 11 hits as Red Sox blown out, fall back to .500

BOSTON — In his last three starts, Garrett Whitlock had found his groove as a starter, going 2-0 with a 3.10 ERA for the Red Sox. Tuesday night represented a significant step back.
Whitlock was blitzed for six runs and 11 hits as the Marlins hit him early and often and routed the Red Sox, 10-1, in the opening game of a three-game series at Fenway Park. Miami jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Red Sox even hit; Boston fell back to .500 at 40-40 with the halfway point of the season looming Wednesday. The Marlins outhit the Sox, 19-9.
It didn’t take long for Miami’s lineup to show why the upstart Marlins entered Tuesday 11 games above .500. After Whitlock led off the game with a rare strikeout of NL batting leader Luis Arraez, Jorge Soler singled to set the table for Bryan De La Cruz to open the scoring with a two-run homer to right field. In his return from the injured list, Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubled then scored on a Garrett Cooper single; Miami made it 3-0 on four consecutive hits off Whitlock.
After the Red Sox made it 3-1 on back-to-back doubles by Justin Turner and Alex Verdugo in the bottom of the first, Whitlock escaped trouble in consecutive innings to keep it a two-run game through three. In the fourth, though, the Marlins piled on. One-out singles from Joey Wendle and Arraez set things up for Soler, who made it 4-1 with an RBI double. Chisholm’s RBI single made it 5-1.
Jean Segura led off the sixth with a solo homer and Whitlock departed two batters later, unable to escape the fifth. In one of the worst starts of his young career, the righty struck out seven and didn’t issue any walks, though the damage was done on a career-high 11 hits in 4 ⅔ innings.
Boston’s offense failed to get much going against Alcantara, the reigning NL Cy Young winner who entered with a 5.08 ERA. Alcantara worked around six hits to hold Boston to a single run in seven innings while striking out five.
The Marlins broke things open in the eighth, tagging relievers Joe Jacques and Justin Garza for four more runs. Arraez’s RBI double made it 7-1, then Chisholm (two-run single) and Cooper (RBI double) got Miami to the double-digit mark.
With the loss, the Red Sox fell to 2-11 against National League teams at home this season. Overall, they are 21-19 at home and 11-16 in interleague play.
The loss snapped a 10-game win streak against the Marlins at Fenway Park and was Boston’s first home loss to Miami since June 18, 2009.
Verdugo has nice night
All-Star candidate Verdugo (2-for-3, 2 2B, RBI, BB) extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 games, coming off the bereavement list with two doubles and an RBI in the loss. His streak is now the longest in the American League and second-longest in baseball behind St. Louis’ Jordan Walker (16 games).
Triston Casas also had three hits for the Red Sox, matching a career high in hits.
Starter TBD as Sox try to get back on track Wednesday
The Red Sox will use an opener and have a bullpen game Wednesday night in the middle game of the series. Miami has lefty Braxton Garrett (3-2, 3.64 ERA) listed as a starter.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Ort is likely to be the opener for the Sox tomorrow.
Whitlock said the Marlins were extremely aggressive hunting pitches in the zone early - something that also happened with the Twins. He said he may have to start expanding the zone earlier in games to avoid damage.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Jarren Duran has the conviction, so now he’s going to keep stealing By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 27, 2023, 11:26 p.m.
Jarren Duran was always fast, but his speed didn’t quite translate to the big leagues in parts of his first two seasons.
In his first two seasons, he had a total of nine steals. This year, however, Duran has already swiped 14 bases in 15 chances. The change is a product of hard work, studying pitchers, and conviction alongside first base coach Kyle Hudson.
“Huddy been on it, dude. We’ve been picking pitchers apart,” Duran said Tuesday before the first game of a three-game set against the visiting Marlins. “We’re picking up on all their cues, what mistakes they make, and taking advantage of it. I know that there’s some guys that are able to just get on and take off. I’d like to do that, but I want to be a better base runner.”
You don’t necessarily have to be the fastest runner to have a knack for stealing bases. It’s all about timing, rhythm, and jumps. Knowing the opponent, as Duran mentioned, is the biggest key. Jackie Bradley Jr., for instance, wasn’t a burner. Nor were Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi — at least not to the level of Duran. Yet the three combined for 68 stolen bases during the 2018 season.
“That group in ‘18, they were really good about that,” said manager Alex Cora. “You gave them something and they took off.”
It’s studying and conviction that makes a base stealer a base stealer. But even if Duran had the studying piece down. The conviction wasn’t necessarily there in the past.
“I bet it was hard last year,” Cora said “Then when you get on base [it’s like], ‘What if I get thrown out?’ But he’s getting on base now at a higher rate. The mere presence at first and the opposition knowing that he’s been running puts pressure on them.”
“If the pitcher has a tendency that you can pick out, then you can take off a couple of seconds earlier, which gives you a head start,” said Duran. In defense of a star
If there’s anyone Cora believes should be an All-Star, it’s Alex Verdugo.
The right fielder entered Tuesday’s game second in the majors and first in the American League with nine defensive runs saved at his position.
Verdugo had two doubles in three at-bats in the Sox’ 10-1 loss, raising his average to .307 and his OPS to .856. Verdugo, who started the day third in the majors in doubles, now has 26.
“If you look around and you look at WAR and everything and the defensive impact, it’s Alex,” Cora said. “He’s been one of the best defenders in right field.”
The Red Sox reinstated Verdugo from the bereavement list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener. Bobby Dalbec was optioned to Triple A Worcester. Facial surgery for Houck
Tanner Houck had successful surgery Tuesday for a facial fracture suffered June 16 against the Yankees at Fenway. Kyle Higashioka hit a line drive off Houck’s face, causing the righthander to drop to his knees. The 26-year-old pitcher, nevertheless, walked off under his own power.
A statement by the team Tuesday night said Houck “underwent a successful open reduction and internal fixation of a right orbito-zygomatico-maxillary complex (OZMC) fracture. The procedure was performed by Dr. Branko Bojovic at Mass General Hospital.”
A timeline on Houck’s return is still to be determined. Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt underwent a similar procedure in 2021 while with the A’s and returned in five weeks.
Paxton good to go
James Paxton (right knee soreness) is on track to make his Friday start. Paxton left Saturday’s contest against the White Sox after just four innings, surrendering a run. He will throw a bullpen session Wednesday. “It’s not anything really serious,” said Paxton. “It’s just something that we need to pay attention to and deal with properly and hopefully they caught it at a point where we can deal with it quickly and move on.” . . . Masataka Yoshida was out Tuesday after being hit with a pitch in the right forearm Sunday. . . John Schreiber (shoulder/lat) and Richard Bleier (shoulder inflammation) both threw bullpen sessions. Buchholz on the mound
Former Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz threw out the first pitch Tuesday. It was Buchholz first time at Fenway as a retired player. Former Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes, who is now with the Marlins, did not make the trip. Barnes is on the injured list with a hip impingement.

Marlins @ Red Sox Wednesday, 28th June 2023 7pm @ Fenway
Garrett 3-2/ 3.64
Ort 1-1/5.79
Marlins hope to keep rolling while Red Sox look to get going FLM
Following a 10-1, series-opening triumph on Tuesday, the Miami Marlins will look to keep up their winning ways when a three-game series against the Red Sox continues in Boston on Wednesday.
Miami has won three straight games and nine of 12, and the Marlins remain in a National League playoff position at nearly the halfway mark of the season.
Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara, who got the win on Tuesday in one of his best outings of the season, said, "Everybody's happy. Everybody's supporting each other. But what we are doing this year is something that people will know (about), because we surprised a lot of people this year, and we've just got to keep doing what we're doing."
Braxton Garrett (3-2, 3.64 ERA) takes the ball for Miami in the second of three games against Boston. It will be the 25-year-old's first career start against the Red Sox.
While the Marlins' rotation also includes reigning Cy Young Award winner Alcantara and star rookie Eury Perez, Garrett is in the midst of an strong run of his own. The left-hander has allowed just two earned runs -- one in each of his two most recent starts -- over his past 18 1/3 innings.
Despite taking a no-decision on Thursday in his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Garrett became the first left-hander in Marlins history to record 13 strikeouts without walking a batter. He allowed just two runs, one earned, on three hits across seven innings.
"This guy can really pitch," Miami manager Skip Schumaker said. "If you have stuff and pitch, you'll be an All-Star. He might be an All-Star. He's pitching like one and putting together some really good outings for us."
Another exciting piece of Miami's success is Luis Arraez's chase for .400. The second baseman went 2-for-5 on Tuesday and has a 10-game hit streak while sitting at .399.
The Marlins' lineup as a whole banged out 19 hits to tie a season high on Tuesday. Joey Wendle went 4-for-4 with two runs.
The Red Sox did not officially name a Wednesday starter following the Tuesday game, though manager Alex Cora named Kaleb Ort (1-1, 5.79 ERA) as the "most likely" option to get that nod.
Only one of Ort's 17 appearances this season was a start, when he went 2 1/3 innings to help Boston in its June 18 doubleheader sweep of the New York Yankees.
He has since pitched twice in relief, most recently recording the last two outs of the eighth inning on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.
After finishing 26-50 against American League East opponents last season, the Red Sox have taken their lumps during interleague play this year. Boston is 11-16 against the NL -- including 2-11 at home, which is the worst mark in the majors.
All in all, Boston is exactly a .500 team for the first time in more than a week and will look to step it up in the dog days of the summer.
"40-40, yep. No more, no less," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "Like I said, we're not great, we're not bad. We are where we're at. Obviously, we've got a long way to go. (Wednesday) is the halfway game of the season and we just got to be better, man. That's the bottom line."
Cora's club has been held to a single run in back-to-back games for the third time this season. The Red Sox also had a three-game stretch in May when they managed a total of one run.
On Tuesday, Alex Verdugo had two doubles and Triston Casas went 3-for-4 to lead the Boston offense. It wasn't nearly enough as Garrett Whitlock allowed 11 hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Red Sox’s Alex Cora reveals pitching plans for Wednesday’s game
Published: Jun. 28, 2023, 10:55 a.m.

Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON — The Red Sox still haven’t announced a starter for Wednesday’s game against the Marlins, but right-hander Kaleb Ort is likely to be the opener against the Marlins, manager Alex Cora said.
The Red Sox will have a bullpen game against Miami in an effort to give their four regular starters (Brayan Bello, James Paxton, Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock) an extra day of rest after the club had Monday off between series against the White Sox and Marlins. Bello would have been available on regular rest Wednesday after pitching Friday night in Chicago but the team decided to give him an extra day as the first half winds down. As a result, the Red Sox will use an opener for the third time in a 12-game span. Ort started Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Yankees on June 18 and Justin Garza opened Thursday in Minneapolis before Brandon Walter made his major league debut in a 6 ⅔ inning relief appearance.
Garza threw 39 pitches over two innings in Tuesday’s 10-1 loss, meaning Ort, who has a 5.79 ERA in 17 appearances (1 start), will likely get the nod.
“Most likely, it will be Kaleb,” Cora said. “He’ll open and we’ll go from there.”
Ort will pitch one or two innings before Cora turns to his bullpen. Three multi-inning options (Chris Murphy, Nick Pivetta and Josh Winckowski) are well-rested and ready to go. Murphy and Winckowski each last pitched Saturday, throwing 31 pitches each. Pivetta threw six pitches in that game. Ort threw Sunday, recording two outs on 10 pitches.
“We’ve got Wink, we’ve got Nick, we’ve got Murph. We’re in a good spot in that aspect,” Cora said.
Bello will start the series finale against the Marlins on Thursday before the Red Sox head to Toronto for the weekend. Paxton, Crawford and Whitlock are in line to pitch at Rogers Centre. Bello would be in line to pitch at Fenway Park on the Fourth of July when the Red Sox return home to begin a series wit Texas.
