Alex Speier @alexspeier · 2h Yu Chang will start a rehab assignment this weekend. Joely Rodriguez will pitch Wednesday in Portland. Chris Sale will get an MRI tomorrow to update his status. Cora said team will assess Houck’s status next week as he recovers from the surgery. “Hopefully it’s not that long.”
Cora says Casas continues to struggle with “indecision” defensively, but Sox believe he can still be a good defender.

Pivetta's rain-shortened relief outing shows he's strongest out of 'pen 2:43 AM ADT Molly Burkhardt
Molly Burkhardt @mollyburkhardt
BOSTON -- For the first three innings, the Red Sox’s decision to throw a bullpen game seemed to be going according to plan. But after a one-hour, 13-minute rain delay, things quickly fell apart.
Nick Pivetta's latest relief outing saw him match a season high in strikeouts (seven), but Boston couldn’t hold off Miami’s offense in a 6-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
After opener Kaleb Ort threw two innings of one-run ball, Pivetta retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before back-to-back walks, almost immediately followed by the rain delay, cut his night short.
“I thought it started strong, threw a ton of strikes and then let in two walks at the end,” Pivetta said. “So an even-keeled performance.”
Down three starters -- with Chris Sale (stress reaction in left shoulder blade), Tanner Houck (facial fracture) and Corey Kluber (right shoulder inflammation) on the injured list -- Boston has opted to turn to its bullpen every fifth day.
When asked pregame if bullpen games have made the other four days more challenging, manager Alex Cora said it’s actually “a lot easier.”
“I like the structure, I like multi-inning relievers,” Cora said. “Obviously I would love to have five healthy starters, but here’s where we’re at and there’s one day where we’re going to attack it this way. But I think multi-inning guys are needed now, they are. If you look around the league, there’s not too many guys going six innings.”
Josh Winckowski has been key in filling that multi-inning role for Boston this season, with 44 2/3 relief innings, covering 1 1/3 or more frames as a reliever a team-leading 16 times. Tied for second most with seven such outings are right-hander Kutter Crawford, who has been moved to the rotation, and lefty Brennan Bernardino.
Though the bullpen’s early work unraveled in the sixth on Wednesday, Pivetta’s outing continued a recent trend for the newly minted reliever.
Pivetta opened his night with a 1-2-3 third inning, including bookend strikeouts of Jonathan Davis and designated hitter Jorge Soler. In the fourth, Pivetta struck out the heart of Miami’s lineup -- Bryan De La Cruz, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Garrett Cooper. Before running into trouble in the sixth, Pivetta retired baseball’s hottest hitter, Luis Arraez, getting the .396 hitter to ground out to first baseman Justin Turner.
“I felt good today, I feel like I’ve been consistent,” Pivetta said. “The things I’ve been working on have been paying off, and [I'm] just going to continue going out there and being consistent.”
When the grounds crew pulled the tarp onto the field at 8:32 p.m. ET, Pivetta was responsible for the runners on first and second. Following the rain delay, Winckowski allowed both runners to score after a wild pitch and a two-run single that was deflected by shortstop David Hamilton, inflating Pivetta’s 1.80 ERA as a reliever to 2.70. Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
Prior to his move to the bullpen, Pivetta had made just one relief appearance with the Red Sox: A dominant ninth inning in Game 162 against the Nationals to help Boston earn a 2021 postseason berth. Now, he’s become a key piece in the club’s bullpen, with significant as a reliever vs. a starter.
As a starter (40 innings) 6.30 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 42 strikeouts and 19 walks
As a reliever (20 innings) 2.70 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 25 strikeouts and nine walks
“I think he’s found his stuff back there,” Cora said. “Where we’re at right now as a team, that’s the role that we need from him. Obviously we know what he can do in the first six innings of a game. But roster wise and where we’re at, we need him back there. We got Kutter as a starter, we’re missing him. Obviously we got [Chris Murphy] Murph and Wink, but he’s becoming a dude back there. His fastball is playing, the slider is good. And right now we’re very comfortable with him.”

Slumping offense, more sloppy play leads to fourth straight loss for Red Sox

BOSTON - The Red Sox’ losing streak stretched to four Wednesday night, as the club continued to be haunted by poor defense and a near complete lack of offense.
The Miami Marlins snapped a tie game in the sixth, thanks to a wild pitch and a miscue by rookie shortstop David Hamilton, and earned a 6-2 decision at Fenway. The setback dropped the Red Sox below .500 (40-41) at the exact halfway point of the 2023 season. In their last six games, the Red Sox have scored just 11 runs, including one run in each of the last three, during which they’ve been outscored 20-3. The Sox scored in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Rafael Devers (No. 19), then didn’t manage another run until the bottom of the ninth when the game was already decided.
Meanwhile, the Marlins continued to add on, tacking on runs in both the eighth and ninth against rookie lefty Chris Murphy.
A few mistakes in the top of the sixth proved costly for the Sox.
Josh Winckowski inheriting two baserunners and a 1-and-2 count following a rain delay, struck out Jazz Chisholm for the second out. But Winckowski then walked Garrett Cooper to load the bases.
He then skipped a wild pitch to the backstop as Jorge Soler trotted home from third with the go-ahead run.
Things then went from bad to worse when Jean Segura hit a chopper behind the mound which shortstop David Hamilton juggled long enough for two more baserunners to cross the plate.
Before the rain began, the two teams were locked into a pitchers’ duel
Nick Pivetta, who has flourished in a relief role for the past month, was dominant when he entered the game in the top of the third, fanning five of the first six hitters he faced and retiring nine of the first 10 hitters.
In the sixth, as Pivetta returned for his fourth inning of work, he recorded the first out before issuing consecutive walks. Rain then halted play as Pivetta faced Chisholm, and those baserunners would be problematic when play resumed nearly 75 minutes later.
The Red Sox used Kaleb Ort as an opener for the second time this season and got two innings out of him.
After Ort retired the side in order in the first, Ort was tagged for a leadoff homer in the top of the second when Cooper took him out to center for his 10th homer of the season to give the Marlins a quick 1-0 lead.
Homestand Comes to End
The Red Sox and Marlins conclude their three-game set Thursday night at Fenway, with Miami sending out lefty Jesus Luzardo (6-5, 3.77) and the Red Sox countering with RHP Brayan Bello (5-4, 3.27). Bello has been especially sharp of late, with a 5-2 mark and 2.52 ERA over his last nine starts.
Following the homestand finale, the Red Sox take a brief road trip to Toronto for a weekend series with the Blue Jays, a team they swept at Fenway in the first week of May.

Nick Pivetta looks sick to his stomach on the bench. Those are his runs -- they never should have scored.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Confidence, preparation have Brayan Bello ascending to the pitcher Red Sox know he can be By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 28, 2023, 8:24 p.m.
With the Red Sox once again struggling to find starting pitching, Brayan Bello has been the shining light. It’s a result the Sox didn’t necessarily predict, but the club knew Bello — who carries a 3.27 ERA into his 13th start of the season Thursday — could reach.
It starts with his preparation, something manager Alex Cora noticed once Bello reached the big leagues last season fewer than two months after his 23rd birthday.
“It started in conversations last year,” Cora said prior to Wednesday’s 6-2 loss to the Marlins. “We always make sure that the pitchers, after their starts, sit down with the analytics department and show them the outing as is.”
Cora said it’s impressive how Bello isn’t overwhelmed by all the information, but even more so in is his ability to buy in.
“I think it’s the willingness to use the information to your advantage and understanding that you’re good, but you’re not great,” Cora said. “You know, there’s a lot of things that he needs to do to be the guy that he wants to be.”
Bello has been the guy for his last 10 starts, averaging a shade below six innings per game and holding a 2.45 ERA. The righthander has allowed just one run in back-to-back starts.
“Last year I wasn’t as confident as I am this year. This year I have the confidence that I belong here. That I’m a big leaguer,” Bello said. “I’m here because I have a future. I belong here. I have good, good stuff and that’s why I’m here.”
Bello said it’s just as much about gameplanning.
“It’s a mix,” said Bello, “but my focus has been just to prepare every hour.” Tanner Houck was concussed by liner
Tanner Houck underwent successful surgery to repair a facial fracture suffered when he was struck by a line drive on June 16 against the Yankees.
Cora revealed Houck also experienced a slight concussion, but the pitcher no longer has symptoms. There is no timeline on when Houck might be able to return to action, with Cora noting Ryan Brasier’s issues after he was hit in the head in 2021.
“You have to wait,” said Cora. “This is step one. He’s just recovering and next week, we’ll see how he feels. Obviously there’s a lot of steps that have to go into this, [from being] in the gym, moving around, keeping his arm going. I think that’s the most important thing. And we believe we can do that. And then we’ll decide.”
The Sox have used an opener in place of Houck, starting Kaleb Ort for the first two innings Wednesday. While it has proven effective, in some regard, it’s not sustainable. Over the long haul, teams’ bullpens become taxed. Cora believes his club’s upcoming schedule allows the Sox to avoid the fatigue factor.
“I mean, there’s teams that have done it throughout their years. It’s not only one team. There’s a lot of teams out there doing it. And it has worked,” Cora said. “So obviously with the off day on Monday, and the All-Star break coming, I think we’re in a good spot to keep doing it and then we’ll reassess the situation after the All-Star break.”
Chris Sale (left shoulder stress fracture) will have an MRI on Thursday so the team can see how the lefthander is progressing. Since hitting the injured list at the beginning of the month, Sale has remained with the team in Boston. “He’s feeling good, he’s doing real good,” said Cora. “Now we just need to make sure we know where we are at in the process and make decisions off that.” . . . Yu Chang (hamate bone fracture) is progressing toward his third rehab assignment. The Red Sox had to pull Chang off his prior two after he felt pain in his wrist area. Chang will DH for Double A Portland on Saturday . . . Joely Rodríguez (left shoulder inflammation) will pitch Thursday for Portland, while Richard Bleier (left shoulder inflammation) will throw a live batting practice at Fenway . . . The Sox paid tribute to the late Art Plant before the game. Plant, who died in November, was founder and president of the 1,100-member Red Sox Nation fan club at The Villages, Fla. His grandson, Nick, threw out the first pitch.

Marlins shoot for three-game road sweep of Red Sox FLM
After winning the first two games by a combined 16-3 score, the Miami Marlins aim for a road series sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.
Miami has won four straight and 10 of its past 13 games, including a 6-2 win on Wednesday to set up the opportunity for the sweep.
"This is my fourth year here and I'm not gonna lie, this is probably the most fun I've ever had in the big leagues playing baseball," Miami center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. "I always try to have as much fun as I can, but this is a different level of fun with these guys in there."
The Marlins are also 11-3 in their past 14 road games, having won six straight outside of Miami, and they sit 13 games over .500 for the first time since 2009.
Reinforcements have helped the team's recent success in Boston, as Chisholm and third baseman Jean Segura have just returned from injuries.
Chisholm, out since May 14 due to turf toe, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in Tuesday's series opener in his first game back, then hit an eighth-inning home run on Wednesday.
Segura, sidelined for nearly two weeks because of a hamstring strain, homered on Tuesday in his return. He added a two-run single on Wednesday.
"They've had a lot of time off and probably watching the team doing really well without them and wanting to be part of this thing," Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said on Tuesday. "I think the pressure (was) a little bit off of them, too, because they don't have to come back feeling like they have to be the hero. Just (being) who they are is good enough for us."
The Marlins will finish the series with a second straight left-hander on the mound. Jesus Luzardo (6-5, 3.77 ERA) is set to oppose Boston for the first time.
Luzardo, 25, leads the Miami staff with 103 strikeouts through 16 starts. He fanned nine batters -- his second-highest total of the season -- across seven shutout, two-hit innings on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, his eighth quality start.
The Red Sox, who are on a four-game skid and have a 2-12 home record against National League teams this season, will attempt to salvage the series finale.
Alex Verdugo had a 13-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday.
The emergence of Brayan Bello (5-4, 3.27 ERA) as a consistent starter has been a major bright spot of Boston's season to this point. The 24-year-old right-hander will attempt to continue his success on Thursday.
Bello has worked at least six innings in each of his past four starts and five of his past six, which includes back-to-back, seven-inning outings against the New York Yankees earlier this month.
In his most recent start, Bello worked 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball to beat the host Chicago White Sox on Friday.
"My goal is always (to) try to go deep into the game so I can help the bullpen, and that has been my mentality since I came up here," Bello said. "I'm trying to get quick outs. I'm not trying to strike out anybody, and that's been the key to go deep into the game."
Prior to Bello, the most recent Red Sox pitchers to post a sub-2.50 ERA in a 10-start span before turning 25 years old were Jon Lester, Aaron Sele, Roger Clemens and Dennis Eckersley.
Bello's work ethic has been impressive.
"He's very hungry," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "He understands that he's good, but obviously there's a lot of work that we have to do for him to get to where we want to."
Bello will be making his first career appearance against Miami.

Pivetta's rain-shortened relief outing shows he's strongest out of 'pen2:43 AM ADT Molly Burkhardt Pivetta has been really good out of the pen. Maybe he's found his niche for the time being, but perhaps he could also be returned to the rotation since we're down 2 starters. The offense is as maddening as ever. Of course, it might not matter if Bello is on top of his game as he has been in recent starts if the Sox do not give him any support offensively or defensively.
