It’s the start of an interleague series on the diamond in a rematch of the 1986 World Series as the teams meet in Beantown. The New York Mets are on the road as they play the opening game of a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox Friday night. New York closed a three-game interleague set with the White Sox at home Thursday afternoon hoping for a sweep. The Mets picked up a 5-1 win in the middle game of the set Wednesday night. Boston dropped the rubber game of their road set with the lowly A’s in Oakland Wednesday, falling 6-5 in the finale of that set. The Red Sox have won the last six meetings between the teams, including a two-game home sweep September 21-22, 2021 in the most recent series between the teams
New York Mets Trying to Keep July Momentum Going New York shut down the White Sox Wednesday night for their third straight win and entered Thursday 9-4 in the month of July. The Mets went into Thursday’s action 45-50 and stood fourth in the NL East, 16.5 games behind the Braves for the top spot in the division. They were seven games behind the Phillies for the final wild card spot in the National League. On Wednesday night, New York finished with five hits with Francisco Alvarez (run, RBI) the lone player with two. Brett Baty (his seventh) homered for the Mets in the victory. Justin Verlander (4-5) earned the win as he threw eight strong innings, allowing one run on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, before departing.
Kodai Senga is on the mound for the Mets as he makes his 18th start of the season in this contest. He comes in 7-5 with a 3.20 ERA, a 1.265 WHIP, 49 walks and 122 strikeouts over 95.2 innings of work this season. Senga didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Friday at home against the Dodgers. He threw six innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in a game the Mets eventually dropped 5-1. In his last three starts, Senga is 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, five walks and 29 strikeouts over 19 innings of work. In his 18th career major league start, he pitches against the Red Sox for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career start at Fenway Park.
Boston Red Sox Looking to Gain Ground in AL Wild Card Picture Boston dropped two of three against the lowly A’s on the road, missing an opportunity to gain ground in the AL wild card picture. The Red Sox entered Thursday 51-46 on the season and stood fourth in the AL East, eight games behind the Rays and Orioles for the top spot. They were 2.5 games behind the Astros for the final wild card spot in the American League. On Wednesday, Boston got two hits from Adam Duvall (run) while Justin Turner launched his 15th homer of the season only to fall short. Brayan Bello (7-6) took the loss as he was tagged for six runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings of work.
James Paxton is on the mound for the Red Sox as he logs his 12th start of the season in this contest. He comes in 5-2 with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.034 WHIP, 17 walks and 68 strikeouts over 59 innings of work this season. Paxton took the loss in his last start, which came against the Cubs on the road Saturday. He threw three innings, allowing six runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a game the Red Sox eventually lost 10-4. In his last three starts, Paxton is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, six walks and 14 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work. Paxton makes his fourth career start against the Blue Jays in this contest. He comes in 1-1 with a 4.30 ERA, a 1.705 WHIP, four walks and 12 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work against them. Paxton is 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA, a 1.163 WHIP, seven walks and 44 strikeouts over 32.2 innings in six career starts at Fenway Park.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 4h Red Sox are playing with a fire a bit with Connor Wong, who has caught the fourth-most innings in the majors since June 1.
It was 18th-most over the first two months of the season.
Only 5 starts by backups since Reese McGwire went on the IL.
Wong is at 570.1 innings for the season, 18 shy of last season (majors and minors). He's done a great job but they really need McGuire back to help shoulder some of the burden.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox can’t afford to overlook disappointing Mets By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 20, 2023, 7:58 p.m.
OAKLAND — Manager Alex Cora will have a full weekend ahead. There will be a family reunion with the Mets in town and his older brother, Joey, the club’s third base coach. The Cora family will host roughly 45 family members this weekend in Boston. Not only because it’s a series between brothers but also because Friday will mark the sixth trip around the sun for the younger Cora’s twin boys, Xander and Islander.
The festivities won’t take away from some sibling rivalry.
“We better kick their [butt],” Cora said with a smile. “I don’t care about the Mets. But [because] of the third base coach, we better kick their [butt].”
That was before the Red Sox dropped the series to the Athletics in Wednesday’s rubber match. The mood was a bit different pregame. What could have been a 4-2 road trip suddenly turned into 3-3, prompting the Sox manager to call his team’s play just “OK” in their two road series which began against Cubs in Chicago.
The Red Sox (51-46) left Oakland Thursday 2½ games behind the Astros for the third wild card spot. The Astros begin a four-game set against the A’s Thursday evening at the Coliseum, so there’s a strong chance that Houston lead will increase by the end of the weekend if the Sox don’t beat the cash-flowing Mets, a club that has been a disappointment.
New York will enter Friday’s series at Fenway sporting a 45-51 record. They are fourth in the National League East standings and seven games back of the final wild card spot. The Mets went into the break with some optimism and a 6-3 record after snatching consecutive series from the Giants and Diamondbacks — they swept Arizona — then losing a series to the Padres .
The Mets came out of the All-Star break and dropped the first two contest to the Dodgers. Their four-game skid was snapped with a pair of wins and a series victory against the White Sox before losing the series finale Thursday.
“Obviously knowing a lot about them and how the season has been going, it’s pretty similar to us,” Cora said. “They still have some dangerous hitters. [Pete] Alonso, Francisco [Lindor]. Francisco seems like [he’s] turning the corner, but he hasn’t been consistent offensively for them. Pitching wise, when they go six, they win games. When the starters go short, they struggle finishing games.”
A large part of the Mets’ struggles could be placed on their star players. They just haven’t performed. Lindor hasn’t lived up to his $341 million billing. Not offensively. The power is still present (19 homers) but, as Cora pointed out, the consistency is not. Lindor is batting .229/.318/.458 with a .776 OPS on the year. In 30 games before the All-Star break, it appeared as if Lindor was turning a corner, batting .298/.397/.644 with a 1.041 OPS and nine homers. In his six games post All-Star break, Lindor has just one hit in 19 at-bats, though he has four walks in his last three games.
After winning a batting title last year, Jeff McNeil has been in a season-long slump, hitting just .246 with a horrendous .642 OPS. Starling Marte is another one. Prior to going on the injured list Thursday because of migraines, Marte, a career .287 hitter with a .789 OPS, was hitting .254 with a .640 OPS and five home runs. Max Scherzer (3.99 ERA) and Justin Verlander (3.47 ERA) have looked their age, at times, this year, but they have had promising outings in their last starts. Scherzer (38) went seven scoreless, allowing just a hit, while Verlander (40) recently dished out eight innings against the White Sox Wednesday in a win, surrendering just a run and three hits.
It’s why the Mets and owner Steve Cohen likely won’t totally punt on this season. They have the stars and some room to make a run still.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, aren’t looking at the Mets as a club that is what their record says it is. The Mets, certainly, should be, but that would be a recipe for disaster for the Red Sox. It wasn’t too long ago that the Cardinals, a team with similar star power to the Mets but has underperformed, came into Fenway and swept the Sox.
“I’m sure it’ll be a lot of excitement,” said Rob Refsnyder. “A lot of superstars on their team. When you play superstars they play up to the fans and stuff like that. Obviously, this is going to be really good turnout in Fenway. The stars are going be out. It’s going be a tough series.” Crawford, Paxton swap starts
The Red Sox flipped Kutter Crawford and James Paxton in the rotation for the weekend. Crawford will pitch the series opener Friday, giving Paxton more rest in between starts. Paxton will pitch Saturday. The Sox will round out the series Sunday likely utilizing the opener strategy with Nick Pivetta taking on the bulk role in relief. Pivetta struck out 13 batters, the most by a reliever in Red Sox history, in a win against the A’s Monday … The Red Sox will draw a tough pair of starters in Kodai Senga Friday and Scherzer Saturday. Senga has been the Mets’ most consistent starter, carrying a 3.20 ERA in 17 starts. In 95⅔ innings, he has struck out 122 batters. Carlos Carrasco will take the ball Sunday. He has a 5.35 ERA in 13 starts.

Red Sox set for first look at Mets RHP Kodai Senga FLM
New York Mets fans may be watching the team's future ace when right-hander Kodai Senga takes the mound on Friday to open a three-game road series against the Boston Red Sox.
After pitching professionally in Japan for 11 years, the 30-year-old signed a five-year, $75 million contract with the Mets in December -- just after New York added Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer in free agency.
Senga has had to adjust to the larger baseball used in the major leagues, but he has shown he has top-of-the-rotation potential.
Senga (7-5, 3.20 ERA) has recorded 122 strikeouts through his first 17 starts (95 2/3 innings) and has a 2.37 ERA in his past six outings. He will be pitching against the Red Sox for the first time.
"Anybody who can strike guys out at the rate he can, that is going to play," Mets reliever Adam Ottavino said. "It's been awesome to watch, and he's a hard worker. I really believe in him."
Senga held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run on four hits in six innings on Saturday. He struck out nine and walked just two, but things unraveled for the Mets in the late innings and the Dodgers earned a 5-1 victory.
In his final start before the All-Star break, Senga struck out 12 in eight innings and allowed one run during a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. That win followed two straight starts in which he failed to pitch six innings.
"I think the biggest part is I am able to play against these hitters, not just against the ball," Senga told the media through an interpreter on Saturday. "I am able to throw with more confidence. I can face them and not the ball."
The Red Sox will counter with right-hander Kutter Crawford (4-4, 3.74 ERA), who will attempt to extend Boston's five-game home winning streak. Crawford has never pitched against the Mets.
Crawford pitched six scoreless innings in Boston's 11-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. He struck out a career-high nine batters, allowed one hit and walked four. It was the third time he pitched at least six innings this season.
New York outfielder Tommy Pham left the Mets' 6-2 loss against the White Sox on Thursday with a groin injury after he grounded into a double play in the third inning. Earlier in the day, the Mets placed outfielder Starling Marte on the injured list due to lingering effects from migraine headaches.
The Red Sox are coming off back-to-back losses against the Oakland A's but are hoping their lineup will soon be bolstered by Trevor Story's return. Story has not played this year after having elbow surgery in January, but he is scheduled to play five innings at shortstop for Double-A Portland on Friday.
"We're not cutting corners on the rehab," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "We just feel like right now is the time to go and let's see how long it takes.
"It's not a one-week thing. We want him to get his feet under him and bounce back after nine innings. This is just the beginning, but it feels good knowing he's going to go out and play on Friday."
Earlier this month, Story said he hoped to be in Boston's lineup sometime in August.

Game 98: Red Sox vs. Mets lineups and notesBy Andrew Mahoney Globe Staff,Updated July 21, 2023, 54 minutes ago Any talk that the Red Sox were contending for a spot in the postseason may have taken a bit of a hit after they dropped two in a row to the worst team in baseball, including Wednesday’s 6-5 loss at Oakland. Still, the Sox are just three games behind the Blue Jays and Astros, who hold the final two spots in the wild-card standings. This weekend’s three-game series with the underachieving Mets at Fenway Park could be a chance for the Sox to get back on track, and it could go a long way in determining whether or not the Sox will be a buyer or seller at the Aug. 1 trade deadline. They will need to solve Friday’s starter, Kodai Senger, who has 122 strikeouts through 17 starts (95⅔ innings) and has a 2.37 ERA in his past six outings. Kutter Crawford will be on the mound for the Sox. Lineups METS (45-51): Brandon Nimmo (L) CF Francisco Lindor (S) SS Jeff McNeil (L) RF Pete Alonso (R) 1B Daniel Vogelbach (L) DH Francisco Alvarez (R) C Brett Baty (L) 3B Mark Canha (R) LF Luis Guillorme (L) 2B Pitching: RHP Kodai Senga (7-5, 3.20 ERA) RED SOX (51-46): Jarren Duran (L) LF Justin Turner (R) 2B Masataka Yoshida (L) DH Rafael Devers (L) 3B Adam Duvall (R) CF Alex Verdugo (L) RF Triston Casas (L) 1B Connor Wong (R) C Yu Chang (R) SS Pitching: RHP Kutter Crawford (4-4, 3.74 ERA) Time: 7:10 p.m. TV, radio: NESN, WEEI-FM 93.7 Mets vs. Crawford: Has not faced any Mets batters Red Sox vs. Senga: Has not faced any Boston batters Stat of the day: Alex Cora is one win shy of tying Jimy Williams for seventh-most in franchise history. The only person to manage as many Red Sox games as Cora (745) and post a better winning percentage than his .555 mark (413-331) is Terry Francona (.574). Notes: The Red Sox are going for their fifth straight win at home. … Crawford pitched six scoreless innings in the 11-5 win over the Cubs on Sunday, allowing just one hit while striking out a career-high nine. … Senga held the Dodgers to one run on four hits in six innings on Saturday, striking out nine while walking just two. We need 2-3. The only way that beating TO and the NYY and Houston will matter is if we beat everyone else.

Trevor Story joined by two other Red Sox rehabbing players Friday Published: Jul. 21, 2023, 5:45 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com PORTLAND, Maine — Red Sox slugger Trevor Story will appear in his first rehab game Friday for Double-A Portland.
Story, who underwent elbow surgery in January, will play five innings at shortstop. He’s batting second in the Sea Dogs batting order and playing five innings at shortstop.
Story will be joined by Pablo Reyes and Corey Kluber.
Reyes, who has been on the 10-day injured list with an abdominal strain since June 23, is leading off and playing center field. This marks his ninth rehab game. He has played four games for Worcester and four games for Portland, going a combined 10-for-29 (.345 batting average) with three homers and one double.
Reyes’ 20-day rehab assignment expires Sunday. He’s out of minor league options. The Red Sox, therefore, have a tough decision looming on whether to activate Reyes or designate him for assignment. If they were to activate him, Boston would need to cut another position player on the active roster. The one roster spot likely will come down to Reyes, Kiké Hernández or Christian Arroyo.
Kluber will make his first rehab appearance. He has been on the IL since June 21 with right shoulder inflammation.
The righty will follow opener Joe Jones. Prospect Hunter Dobbins will be the bulk reliever.
Boston’s top prospect Marcelo Mayer, a shortstop, will move to third base with Story starting. This will mark Mayer’s first ever professional appearance at third base.

Over the past month, batters have swung at 46 forkballs and whiffed 30 times.

Red Sox got off to a quick lead but Crawford having a hard time keeping the ball in the park even with the wind blowing in
last inning is was Nimmo going to RF with a 2 out dinger
and now in the 4th Vogelbach just crushed a 2 run dinger over the RF bullpen
Crawford should be in the pen, not starting.
