The Mets continue to chase the wild card The New York Mets entered Friday’s contest in Boston sitting six and a half games behind the final wild card in the National League. They’ve gone 3-3 since the All-Star break, taking two out of three games from the Chicago White Sox at home and losing a three-game home set against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets are hitting just .203/.320/.398 with six doubles and six home runs in the last seven days and 123 at-bats. Francisco Alvarez has homered three times in his last seven games, while Pete Alonso has amassed a paltry two singles in his previous eight contests and 27 at-bats. The Mets desperately need more from their offense if they want to stay alive in the playoff race.
Carlos Carrasco will toe the rubber Sunday at Fenway Park, and the 36-year-old right-hander is 3-3 with a pedestrian 5.35 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 48/29 K/BB ratio in 13 starts (65.2 innings pitched) in 2023. After a dominant performance in a 9-0 thrashing of the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 6 when he allowed three hits and a walk across eight scoreless innings, Carrasco surrendered four earned runs on six hits and two walks through 4.2 frames of work in a no-decision against the White Sox this past Tuesday.
The Sawx lost a three-game set in Oakland The Boston Red Sox fell to 51-46 on the season following Wednesday’s 6-5 defeat at the lowly Oakland Athletics. They surprisingly dropped two out of three games at Oakland Coliseum, and the Sox entered the Mets series trailing the final wild card in the American League by two and a half games. Boston is slashing .250/.305/.421 with 13 extra-base hits and four home runs in the last seven days and 152 at-bats. Masataka Yoshida is 13-for-36 with four doubles, a triple, and a pair of dingers in his last eight games, while Rafael Devers and Triston Casas have slugged three home runs apiece in the past two weeks.
The Red Sox haven’t announced who’ll get the starting call Sunday. Nick Pivetta (4.44 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) is certainly in the mix if the Sox decide not to use him on Saturday afternoon. Pivetta fanned 13 across six scoreless innings in a 7-0 blanking of the Athletics this past Monday. Chris Murphy (1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) threw 4.2 scoreless frames in a 3-0 loss at Oakland last Tuesday, and he’s another option for the Red Sox.
Mets at Red Sox Sunday, at 7:10 PM EST Clear It's expected to be 81° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 5 MPH wind blowing right to left in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com

We need 2-3. The only way that beating TO and the NYY and Houston will matter is if we beat everyone else. It's not do or die, but after the let down series against the As, I would agree that winning 2 out of 3 is big, especially since we have a tough 2 weeks coming up.

5-3 Red Sox 6th It was good see Paxton bounce back after his last outing. If Casas can hit like the Red Sox envisioned, look out.

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 14h How that was not charged an error to Devers was just wild. A lot — and I mean A LOT — of plays this year have been changed from errors to hits at Fenway or just not called errors at all. And it especially hurts guys like Joe Jacques, grinding to stay in the big leagues. Brutal.
Dan Shaughnessy @dan_Shaughnessy · 14h It has become downright corrupt Errors, and thereby fielding percentage, come down to the opinion of the official scorekeeper. There is a lot of bias behind those decisions. They are not useless stats, but they are fairly meaningless taken in a vacuum. As McWilliams points out, the decision not only affects the fielder, but it affects the pitcher too. Thank goodness for advanced metrics. On a different but slightly related personal note, a couple of days ago, out of nowhere, my son whips out the stat "TOOTBLAN" (Thrown out on the bases like a nincompoop) on me. This led to a discussion on Fangraphs' BsR (baserunning) stat. After years of redirecting him from things like 'errors' to DRS, my son has developed into a great, Fangraphs and metric loving baseball fan. Proud mama.

BOSTON — The Red Sox have named lefty Brennan Bernardino their starting pitcher vs. the Mets on Sunday. Boston and New York play the rubber game of their three-game series at 7:10 p.m. on ESPN.
Bernardino will serve as an opener. He’ll be followed by a bulk reliever.
He has allowed one run, three hits and one walk while striking out seven in three starts (5 ⅓ innings) as an opener this season. Overall, Bernardino has a 2.48 ERA (32 ⅔ innings, nine earned runs) in 28 outings this season.
Bernardino pitched two scoreless innings as an opener Monday in Oakland. He was followed by Nick Pivetta who struck out 13 in six scoreless and hitless innings. But Pivetta pitched an inning in Boston’s 8-6 win over the Mets on Saturday evening. He threw 15 pitches (nine strikes) in a scoreless eighth.
Pivetta will be available Sunday. But lefty Chris Murphy is an option to instead serve as the bulk reliever. The 25-year-old rookie last pitched Tuesday in Oakland. He tossed 4 ⅔ scoreless innings as a bulk reliever following opener Joe Jacques in Boston’s 3-0 loss to the A’s.
“We needed Nick today in that inning,” manager Alex Cora said after Saturday’s win. “We did. It’s one of those that we’re OK (Sunday). We know what we’re going to do. He might be part of it. He might not be part of it. But that eighth inning today after two long days and where we were bullpen-wise, he gave us those three outs and we were able to get 27.”
Boston also has Brandon Walter available Sunday for long relief. He hasn’t pitched in eight days. He threw two innings against the Cubs last Saturday at Wrigley Field.
“We’ve got Murph, too. We’ve got Walter. So we’ll mix and match and hopefully, flip the ball to (Chris) Martin and then Kenley (Jansen) and win the series,” Cora said.

Game 100: Mets at Red Sox lineups and notesBy Amin Touri Globe Staff,Updated July 23, 2023, 28 minutes ago The Red Sox’ season hits the century mark on Sunday, as they’ll play their 100th game of the campaign in a rubber match against the Mets in prime time. With a slew of starting pitchers on the injured list, the Sox are expected to turn to Brennan Bernardino as an opener on Sunday. The question is who will follow; Nick Pivetta would have been the obvious choice, had he not thrown an inning Saturday, leaving lefthander Chris Murphy as the likely candidate to follow Bernardino as a bulk reliever. The Mets will keep it conventional for the finale, handing the ball to veteran righthander Carlos Carrasco. Lineups METS (46-52): Brandon Nimmo (L) CF Francisco Lindor (S) SS Jeff McNeil (L) RF Pete Alonso (R) 1B Mark Vientos (R) DH Brett Baty (L) 3B Mark Canha (R) LF Omar Narvaez (L) C Danny Mendick (R) 2B Pitching: RHP Carlos Carrasco (3-3, 5.35 ERA) RED SOX (52-47): Jarren Duran (L) CF Masataka Yoshida (L) LF Justin Turner (R) DH Rafael Devers (L) 3B Adam Duvall (R) RF Triston Casas (L) 1B Connor Wong (R) C Enrique Hernandez (R) 2B Yu Chang (R) SS Pitching: LHP Brennan Bernardino (1-0, 2.48 ERA) Time: 7:10 p.m. TV, radio: ESPN, WEEI-FM 93.7 Mets vs. Bernardino: Pete Alonso 1-1, Brett Baty 1-1, Mark Canha 0-1, Mark Vientos 0-1, Francisco Álvarez 0-1 Red Sox vs. Carrasco: Jorge Alfaro 2-10, Rafael Devers 0-3, Adam Duvall 2-8, Rob Refsnyder 1-5, Justin Turner 1-4 Stat of the day: Triston Casas has hit five home runs in his last eight games. Notes: Casas became the first rookie to hit two home runs against Max Scherzer in the same game on Saturday, and also notched his first career multi-homer game in the process. “Lately I’ve just been putting the barrel on the ball,” Casas said. “They’ve been flying, jumping for hits. Things have been turning my way, so I’m just going to keep riding this as long as I can because there’s going to be a stretch where this doesn’t happen.” ... The Sox launched five homers Saturday night, for the second time this season ... Boston has won six of its last seven games against the Mets ... The Red Sox are 12-5 in their last 17 games, the best record in the AL over that span ... Carrasco, who has failed to last five innings in four of his past six starts, is 1-3 with a 7.47 ERA in 31 ⅓ innings over eight career appearances (six starts) against the Red Sox. But IRT the official scoring, it feels like they are all over the place. MLB should occasionally review some of these plays and overturn them where necessary. And even change official scorers if they aren't doing the job. Same with HOF voters. It gets to the point where some of these people are no longer up to the job, or have become too political. Someone name TR Sullivan voted for Dickey & Street, but not Beltran? If this was the real world, he'd have been fired. Randy Galloway voted for Napoli, but not Jeff Kent? If this was government work, people would just assume that he had been paid off.

Bernardino sets the tone in Boston's dominant bullpen game Lefty embracing opener role; Red Sox hold Mets to one run to take series from New York 1:07 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- At some point, the Red Sox will have a full starting rotation again rather than the partial one they’ve deployed for the past several weeks.
But a diverse crew of relievers has been used effectively by manager Alex Cora, keeping the team afloat even while going with bullpen games multiple times a week.
And on nights like Sunday’s 6-1 win over the Mets at Fenway, the Sox are even thriving while handling nine innings by committee.
A grouping of Brennan Bernardino (five outs as the opener), Chris Murphy (11 outs as the bulk-innings guy), Josh Winckowski (two big outs with traffic in the sixth), Joely Rodríguez (three outs against his former team), Joe Jacques (two outs), Chris Martin (12-pitch strikeout of Daniel Vogelbach) and Brandon Walter (scoreless ninth) combined for the 27 outs necessary for victory.
One underrated key is the way Bernardino has settled in as an opener, allowing just one run over seven innings in his four appearances in that role.
“I'm enjoying it,” Bernardino said. “I'm starting to build a routine around it and getting ready for it. I’ve been throwing with the relievers, and then before the game I’ve been getting there about 25 minutes early, and I’ll stretch and then stretch again and stay loose, and I’ll get on the [bullpen] mound about 15 minutes before the game starts.”
Then, it’s a game of passing the baton, which Boston’s relief crew has become quite adept at.
“We just know we have to do our job and pass it to the next guy,” said Murphy, who earned the win, the first of his career. “It’s more than just the pitching; our offense has stepped up in a huge way to help us in the bullpen and give us some support.”
Without question, it helps when the offense makes a lot of noise early, and Boston had a 5-0 lead by the bottom of the third inning and 15 hits on the night.
After taking the rubber match against the Mets, the 53-47 Sox remain two games back in the chase for the third American League Wild Card spot.
At this crucial point of the season -- in which the Red Sox are trying to convince the front office they should be buyers rather than sellers leading into the Aug. 1 Trade Deadline -- every win takes on added importance.
“We feel good in the position that we are in right now,” said slugger Rafael Devers, who bashed his 24th homer. “We know that we're in a tough division, but there’s a lot of baseball ahead of us and we know what we can do, and hopefully we can give a good chase to the teams ahead of us so we can secure a spot in the playoffs.”
Boston will have a day of rest on Monday, and then a stiff challenge with the Braves coming to town for the start of a two-game series on Tuesday.
Speaking of Tuesday, that will be yet another bullpen game for Boston, but one in which Nick Pivetta -- who has stood out since moving to a relief role -- could log the workload more typical of a starter.
Cora acknowledged that a more forgiving schedule of late has helped make the high-wire act of managing a pitching staff without Chris Sale, Tanner Houck, Garrett Whitlock and Corey Kluber a little easier.
The degree of difficulty will also be lessened for Cora when key setup man John Schreiber returns from the injured list on Tuesday. Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
“Pivetta and Murph, let’s be honest, without those two, it’s tough to do,” Cora said. “Nick, we’ve been talking about him the last two weeks, but Murph has been amazing. Since we moved him to the bullpen in [Triple-A] Worcester, he’s been able to throw strikes. There’s certain days he’s all over the place, but his stuff plays. He has a good fastball. He can get righties out. It’s been a pleasant surprise for us.”
For Murphy, who struggled as a starter at Triple-A this season, pitching in a prominent role for the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball was something he couldn’t help but appreciate.
“It’s pretty cool,” Murphy said. “We all know it’s Sunday Night Baseball, and it’s that thing that’s bookmarked on ESPN every week. So it’s a pretty fun game.”

Injuries & Moves: Schreiber set to return; Story goes to Worcester July 23rd, 2023 LATEST NEWS
July 23: RHP John Schreiber set for Tuesday return The Red Sox will get a big lift in the bullpen on Tuesday when Schreiber, one of the team's best setup men, returns from a two-month absence. The side-winder has been on the injured list with a right teres major strain since May 16 and his return couldn't come at a better time, with the heavy-hitting Braves coming to town for a two-game series.
"Everything feels good," Schreiber said. "Recovery has been back to normal and all that kind of stuff. Was able to work out some stuff as well during rehab and get the changeup going a little better. So I’m pretty excited about that. Pitch-wise, everything has been looking good and all that stuff. Just excited to get back and be part of the ‘pen again.”
July 23: SS Trevor Story gets a hit, makes a nice play In his third game of the weekend at Double-A Portland, and second at shortstop, Story went 1-for-2 with a walk. According to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, Story also made an impressive play in the hole that included a jump throw to first base. With Portland hitting the road this week, Story's rehab will be transferred to Triple-A Worcester for the start of a homestand on Tuesday. Story is expected to make his 2023 season debut for the Red Sox at some point in August.
July 23: Decision looming on INF Pablo Reyes Reyes played the final game of his Minor League rehab assignment on Sunday, going 0-for-4 in Portland with the Double-A Sea Dogs. It was the 20th day of the assignment, meaning the Red Sox are now faced with the decision of activating Reyes or designating him for assignment. The Sox have a logjam in the infield even without Story, so it's unclear how they will proceed at this point.
C Reese McGuire (right oblique strain) Expected return: August McGuire will start his Minor League rehab assignment on July 25 at Triple-A Worcester. McGuire was initially slow to recover from the injury he suffered while taking a swing on June 21 against the Twins, but he resumed baseball activities on July 6 and has made steady progress in recent days. Red Sox reliever shows ‘amazing’ stuff, reaches 98 mph to record 2 big K’s

BOSTON — Red Sox reliever Josh Winckowski allowed seven earned runs and 15 hits in 8 ⅓ innings over his final five relief outings heading into the All-Star break.
“Wasn’t quite where I wanted to be heading into it,” Winckowski said. “I kind of scuffled a little bit. So it was nice to get a mental reset and kind of get back and hit the reset. I’ve been happy with how I’ve been throwing since.”
Winckowski recorded two crucial outs in Boston’s 6-1 win over the Mets on Sunday. He has thrown 4 ⅔ scoreless innings in four relief outings since returning from the All-Star break.
“I think it’s always good to get a break,” Winckowski said.
Winckowski replaced bulk reliever Chris Murphy (3 ⅔ innings, one run) with one out in the sixth inning and runners at the corners. He struck out both Pete Alonso and Mark Vientos swinging to escape the jam and keep the lead at 5-1.
“I think moments like that are always big,” Winckowski said. “Usually ... there’s a couple moments where the momentum can shift. So we took the momentum early. And obviously they started to build some momentum there. So to come in and shut it down is obviously a big moment. First and third, to be able to leave them there, that’s big, although Murph did a great job before that. Just ran into a little bit of trouble. So props to him. But yeah, a big moment.”
Winckowski, who was looking to induce a ground ball, fell behind Alonso in the count 3-1. But he got the slugger to foul off a 98 mph sinker and swing and miss at a 90.4 mph cutter.
The right-handed reliever struck out Veintos on three pitches. He started him with an 89.2 mph cutter for a called strike. The right-handed hitter then swung and missed at both a 97.7 mph sinker and 97 mph four-seam fastball.
“The stuff was amazing,” manager Alex Cora said. “We needed that. He was the only righty available in the middle of the game. We were trying to stay away from Nick (Pivetta) tonight so he can pitch on Tuesday. Just made some good pitches, man. He was throwing 97, 98.”
The Red Sox prefer to use Winckowski as a multi-inning reliever. But they have asked him to record more than three outs just one time since returning from the break.
“Where we’re at right now pitching staff-wise, that’s kind of the role we need him to do,” Cora said. “So being able to bounce back the next day. He did it yesterday. He came in today. Did a good job.”
The Red Sox plan to activate right-handed reliever John Schreiber before Tuesday’s game. He has been on the 60-day injured list with a right teres major strain.
“Obviously getting Schreiber back ... is going to be huge for us because now we can use Wink probably more freely and go multiple innings,” Cora said. “But in this stretch, he’s been amazing for us.”
