Alex Speier @alexspeier · 58s Somehow, a liner smashed directly to Christian Arroyo turned into a run-scoring play that instead became a double play. Atlanta's runners weren't sure if it was caught or not. No one was. Arroyo ran to the bag, but the runner dove back safely. (cont)
Arroyo then made the strangest throw ever, basically spiking the ball and having it go a million feet wide of first, and the runner frCom third scored. But, Arroyo was judged to have caught the ball, and the runner from third left early. So...
Cora gave Schreiber a brief tutorial on how to appeal the call at third. When Schreiber executed the appeal, throwing to third, Riley was ruled to have left the bag early, and so the DP was ruled.

'He's an animal': Pivetta continues his dominance in new role 2:49 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- Bulk innings?
Perhaps bulk dominance is a better way to describe what Nick Pivetta is doing since he moved into his new role.
On the one-week anniversary of Pivetta’s historic outing in Oakland when he became the first pitcher to strike out 13 batters and allow zero runs in relief, the righty was more routine than spectacular with the succession of zeros he put up in leading the Sox to a 7-1 victory over the powerhouse Atlanta Braves.
Over five scoreless innings -- frames two through six -- Pivetta yielded three hits and no runs while walking one and striking out five. He threw 80 pitches and earned the win after replacing John Schreiber, whose start was held up due to a 1-hour, 40-minute rain delay.
The fact Pivetta's outing came against the team that has the best record (64-35) and arguably the top offense in baseball (first in homers, slugging and OPS) made it even more impressive.
“Yeah, it’s what we're capable of as a staff,” said Pivetta. “You know, it's what we harp on here. Commanding our pitches, pounding the strike zone, getting ahead of hitters, and once you’re ahead of hitters, it makes the game a lot easier. It’s really good to see us do those things.” Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
Since his “demotion” to the bullpen, Pivetta has a 1.98 ERA over 41 innings, holding batters to a .128 average.
“He’s an animal out of the bullpen,” Red Sox DH Justin Turner said of Pivetta. “He’s been really good for us, pounding the zone, using three, four pitches, keeping guys off balance. I don’t know what happened, but since he moved to the bullpen, his fastball has been a whole different animal for him. He’s ripping it and getting up in the zone and getting a lot of swings and misses underneath it.”
Not only is Pivetta rolling, but so are the 54-47 Red Sox, who have won three in a row, 14 of their past 19 and 21 out of 33.
“I feel like we're playing the right brand of baseball at the right time,” said outfielder Adam Duvall. “We’ve got to keep continuing to build as a team, to continue to get better at the little things and it'll be fun to see how good we can be.”
In between his scoreless bulk innings, Pivetta had a new wrinkle thrown his way when he fired a scoreless frame in Saturday’s win over the Mets. But that didn’t faze him.
“No, I wouldn't say so,” said Pivetta. “I hadn't pitched in five days before, so it just got me in the game. I had two days off before tonight and was able to go out and do what I did today. So I don't think anything affects me at this point.
Nobody can argue with that, given the results.
“He’s very similar to David [Price] in October [of 2018],” manager Alex Cora said. “He wants to work every day. He wants to compete every day. He's ready to go.”
On Tuesday, Pivetta thrived despite not having his “A” stuff.
“Yeah, I think my command was a little bit down tonight, but I was able to execute pitches when I needed to,” Pivetta said. “I was able to make the adjustment. I was able to go out and compete, command the pitches when I needed to. Didn’t walk too many guys so that was positive. As the game went on, I got some early contact and kind of let the game go on from there.”
And that allowed a familiar script to unfold.
“I mean, he's going out there and shoving,” said Duvall. “He's attacking the hitters, attacking the zone. He’s throwing really well. Obviously it's fun to play behind that.”
After Tuesday’s 80-pitch performance, Pivetta likely won’t pitch again until Sunday, the finale of a three-game series in San Francisco.
But if an opportunity comes up before then, Pivetta isn’t going to turn it down.
“Yeah, whenever my name is called from the bullpen, however long I pitch, it’s just what I do,” Pivetta said. “I just go out and try to put us in the best position to win.”

Injuries & Moves: Sale closing in on rehab assignment July 25th, 2023 LATEST NEWS
July 25: LHP Chris Sale could start Minor League rehab assignment next week Things are suddenly moving fast on the rehab front for Sale in his return from a stress reaction in his left shoulder blade. Sale threw "an up and down" bullpen session at Fenway Park during Monday's off-day. It means he threw a simulated inning, took a break and went back for another inning. The next step is to throw live batting practice at Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. If that goes well, Sale could start an abbreviated Minor League rehab assignment early next week.
Given that the Red Sox are using a couple of openers per week anyway, Sale could stretch back out in that role in the Majors rather than prolong his rehab assignment.
“That’s something we’ve been talking about, how we’re going to do it," said manager Alex Cora. "Do we want him to come up here and go four after he goes three in the Minor Leagues? There’s a chance, but nothing we have actually decided. We’ve just got to make sure he's healthy first and then we'll decide what we're going to do.”
C Reese McGuire (right oblique strain) Expected return: August McGuire was set to start his Minor League rehab assignment on July 25 at Triple-A Worcester, but the game was postponed due to rain. (Last updated: July 25)
RHP Corey Kluber (right shoulder inflammation) Expected return: August Kluber's second Minor League rehab appearance was scheduled for July 25 but was postponed by rain. The righty threw 35 pitches and tossed two scoreless innings in relief in his first Minor League rehab assignment on July 21 for Double-A Portland. The Red Sox are keeping their options open on using him as a starter or reliever when he is ready to return. The veteran threw a 30-pitch bullpen session at Fenway Park on July 9 and an up-and-down session on July 13.
It has been a rough season for the 37-year-old Kluber, who experienced discomfort in his shoulder after getting hit hard in a relief appearance on June 20. (Last updated: July 25)
RHP Garrett Whitlock (right elbow inflammation) Expected return: August or September Whitlock will take a significant step on either July 26 or 27, when he throws off the mound for the first time since he was put on the injured list. The hope is he will continue to take steps without experiencing discomfort in his elbow.
It has been a frustrating season for Whitlock, who is serving his third stint on the injured list. The righty is 4-3 with a 5.23 ERA in 10 starts. (Last updated: July 25)
RHP Tanner Houck (facial fracture) Expected return: August at earliest Houck is turning a corner and will throw his first bullpen session since going on the injured list on either July 26 or 27. He initiated his throwing program on July 11. The plan is for Houck to throw off a mound around July 25. The Red Sox are pleased with his progress. (Last updated: July 25)

BOSTON — Another bullpen game, another dominant performance by bulk reliever Nick Pivetta.
The righty tossed 5 scoreless innings in the Red Sox’s 7-1 win over the Braves on Tuesday at Fenway Park. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five.
Pivetta has 19 strikeouts over 12 ⅔ straight scoreless innings. He has been a completely different pitcher since Boston moved him from the starting rotation to the bullpen. He owns a 1.98 ERA in 17 relief outings (41 innings) compared to a 6.30 ERA in eight starts (40 innings).
It was an impressive outing for Pivetta against Atlanta, which owns the major’s best record (64-35) and ranks first in both slugging and OPS.
Braves starter Charlie Morton entered with a 3.36 ERA in 19 starts but the Red Sox knocked him out with two outs in the fourth inning.
Boston scored four runs on six hits and five walks against him. Triston Casas’ bases-loaded walk and Christian Arroyo’s RBI infield single put the Red Sox ahead 2-1 in the first inning.
Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers each added RBI singles in the fourth to make it 4-1.
The Red Sox had the opportunity to score more runs against Morton but they ran themselves into an 8-3-5 triple play in the bottom of the third inning. Casas hit a fly ball to center fielder Michael Harris II who doubled Adam Duvall at first base. First baseman Matt Olson then threw out Masataka Yoshida who tried to make it to third base on Harris’ throw to first.
Boston went ahead 5-1 in the fifth inning on Yu Chang’s RBI single.
Masataka Yoshida’s two-run homer in the eighth made it 7-1. The Japanese rookie went 3-for-4. He’s batting .320 with an .888 OPS.
John Schreiber served as the opener after Boston activated him from the 60-day injured list (right teres major strain) before the game. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk in one inning.
Pivetta replaced him as the bulk reliever and dominated for five innings. Richard Bleier and Chris Martin combined for a scoreless seventh inning. Joely Rodriguez hurled a scoreless eighth and ninth.
The Red Sox and Braves will play the second game of their two-game series Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. Brayan Bello (7-6, 3.60 ERA) will start opposite Spencer Strider (11-3, 3.78 ERA) .

RED SOX NOTEBOOK After he threw a bullpen session, Red Sox hope Chris Sale’s next step is facing live hitters By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated July 25, 2023, 8:19 p.m.
Chris Sale is ready to face hitters.
The lefthander simulated a two-inning outing in a bullpen session on Monday, a prelude to facing hitters in live batting practice in Worcester on Thursday. Assuming Sale comes through that test unscathed, the Sox would then have Sale — out since early June with a stress reaction in his left shoulder — head out on a minor league rehab assignment next week.
The Sox haven’t closed the door to having Sale (5-2, 4.58 ERA, 29 percent strikeout rate in 11 starts) have a relatively short rehab and continue to build up his workload in the big leagues.
“That’s something we’ve been talking about, how we’re going to do it. Do we want him to come up here and go four after he goes three in the minor leagues? There’s a chance, but nothing we have actually decided,” said Sox manager Alex Cora. “We’ve just got to make sure he’s healthy first and then we decide what we’re going to do.”
While Sale is moving forward in his rehab, both Tanner Houck (facial fracture) and Garrett Whitlock (elbow bone bruise) are scheduled to throw bullpens this week. Story’s next move
Shortstop Trevor Story, who last week started his rehab assignment in his return from a January procedure to place an internal brace in his right elbow, joined Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. He entered the series 2-for-8 with two walks and a homer in the first three games of his rehab assignment, showing impressive fluidity in the field but still in search of his timing at the plate.
Story had been scheduled to play short for the WooSox on Tuesday (the first of three straight days of scheduled starts), but the contest was rained out. Cora said Story, once activated, likely will get regular days off rather than being thrown immediately into everyday duty.
“We have to protect him,” said Cora.
Still, such questions underscore that Story is now within weeks of a return, and chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said it’s possible he could join the Red Sox before the expiration of his 20-day rehab clock.
“We’ve been so fortunate with this that things have gone so smoothly so far. He feels great. He looks great. We don’t want to do anything to jeopardize that,” said Bloom. “You guys know how critical we feel Trevor is to everything we’re trying to do. It should change a lot for us in a good way when he’s back in action.” Schreiber starts back
Righthander John Schreiber’s return from the injured list came in unexpected fashion. With the Red Sox employing a bullpen game against Atlanta, the team tabbed Schreiber as an opener — the first start of his big league career.
Schreiber threw 24 pitches (12 strikes) and allowed one run on two hits, one walk and had a hit batter. He got out of the inning in a unconventional manner when second baseman Christian Arroyo made a pick catch of Marcell Ozuna’s low liner then doubled up Austin Riley, who left third base and crossed home plate without tagging up. An appeal led to Riley being called out at third.
Schreiber, who’d been placed on the injured list in mid-May with what was diagnosed as a teres major strain, expressed excitement to have come out on the other side of what he described as the first injury of his professional career.
“I couldn’t be any happier right now,” said Schreiber (2.12 ERA and 30 percent strikeout rate in 17 big league innings this year). “This is a learning experience for me – what I need to do more to make sure I can prevent injuries like this, do a little bit better with activation of certain muscle groups and stuff. I’m really excited to be able to join the group again.” Logjam cleared
The decision to trade Kiké Hernández to the Dodgers was made to help clear a middle infield logjam that was intensified when Pablo Reyes completed his 20-day minor league rehab assignment on Sunday. Cora said Reyes — who hit .303/.338/.364 in 27 games before suffering an oblique injury in late June — will play primarily second and short against lefties; he’ll also offer the team depth in centerfield . . . Catcher Reese McGuire, out since late-June with an oblique injury, started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. He was joined there by righthander Corey Kluber, whose rehab assignment was transferred from Portland to the WooSox. Kluber was slated to pitch three innings on Tuesday as a bulk innings reliever behind opener Oddanier Mosqueda, a lefty, before Worcester’s game was rained out . . . Righthander Norwith Gudiño, who was called up for the doubleheader against the Mets on Saturday, was assigned outright from Boston to Worcester . . . The Sox announced the signing of fourth-round pick Justin Riemer, a shortstop out of Wright State, as well as undrafted free agent catcher Drew Erhard from the University of Tampa. Both will report to Fort Myers . . . Righthander Chan-Sol Lee, a top Korean high school pitcher, has an agreement to join the Red Sox. His deal will become finalized when he takes a physical in Fort Myers. Assuming he passes, Lee won’t pitch this year in the Florida Complex League, instead using the time to acclimate to pro ball before an official 2024 debut . . . The Red Sox released their spring training schedule. They’ll open their game schedule on February 23 at JetBlue Park against Northeastern, then commence Grapefruit League play on February 24 in Sarasota against the Orioles. The team will finish its Florida schedule with a game against Atlanta on March 24, then travel to Globe Life Field in Texas for two games against the Rangers on March 25-26 to close out the exhibition season.

It’s the conclusion of an interleague series on the diamond as a pair of teams collide in the shadows of the Green Monster in Beantown. The Atlanta Braves are on the road as they close out a short two-game interleague set with the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night. Atlanta won the rubber game of their three-game set with the Brewers on the road as they took a 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon. Boston took two of three from the Mets in interleague action as they won the rubber game of that series 6-1 Sunday night at home. This article was published prior to the conclusion of the opening game of the series at Fenway Park Tuesday night.
Atlanta Braves Rolling in NL East Race Atlanta won for the third time in four games after a four-game slide as they downed the Brewers in the rubber game of their set Sunday afternoon. The Braves entered Tuesday 64-34 and held a hefty 11.5-game lead on the Marlins for the top spot in the NL East. On Sunday afternoon, Atlanta got two hits each from Ronald Acuna Jr. (run) and Travis d’Arnaud (run, RBI) to lead the way offensively. Ozzie Albies (his 23rd) hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning while d’Arnaud (his ninth) also went deep in the win. Bryce Elder didn’t factor in the decision as he threw six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Daysbel Hernandez (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning where he allowed one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. Raisel Iglesias fanned the side in the ninth inning for his 18th save of the year.
Spencer Strider is on the bump as he logs his 21st start of the season for the Braves in this contest. He comes in 11-3 with a 3.78 ERA, a 1.089 WHIP, 35 walks and 189 strikeouts over 116.2 innings of work. Strider didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Thursday at home against the Diamondbacks. He threw six innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts in an eventual 7-5 Braves win. In his last three starts, Strider is 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, two walks and 34 strikeouts over 18.1 innings of work. Strider, in his 54th career major league appearance and 41st start, pitches against the Red Sox for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Fenway Park as well.
Boston Red Sox Trying to Chase Down Playoff Spot Boston took two of three from the Mets at home and entered Tuesday having won 13 of their previous 18 games. The Red Sox entered Tuesday tied for fourth in the AL East, nine games behind the Orioles for the top spot in the division. They were 2.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the final wild card spot in the American League playoff picture. On Sunday, Boston rapped out 15 hits with Colton Wong (run) leading the way with three in the contest. Rafael Devers launched his 24th homer of the season in the win. Brennan Bernardino didn’t factor in the decision as the opener on the mound. He threw 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. Chris Murphy (1-0) earned the win as he threw 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Brayan Bello is on the mound for the Red Sox as he makes his 17th start of the season in this contest. He is 7-6 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.222 WHIP, 24 walks and 78 strikeouts over 90 innings of work on the year. Bello took the loss in his last start, which came on the road against the A’s last Wednesday. He threw four innings, allowing six runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in a 6-5 Boston defeat. In his last three starts, Bello is 2-1 with a 5.82 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, two walks and 11 strikeouts over 17 innings of work. Bello beat the Braves in his lone career start against them, which came on the road back on May 10. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a 5-2 Red Sox win. Bello is 5-8 with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.403 WHIP, 27 walks and 74 strikeouts over 77 innings in 15 career appearances, 14 starts, at Fenway Park.

Well we are at 1 hour in this rain delay and it is still pouring
They just had the weather man on and it is not looking good. Basically they have a bunch of light bands and then light ones......until 10:00 pm....
Supposed to be a beautiful sunny, humid day tomorrow
then of course travel to San Fran Thursday..
Not to bummed out. The Kiki news made my whole week. I hate rain delays and rainouts. The good news for me is that since I'm not working, I was able to stay up and watch the whole game.

It was amazing that they only got one run out of it, and even more amazing that that was the only run they scored all game. Our pitchers did a great job of holding that potent offense to one run.
