Devers, Whitlock exit early, continuing tough string of injuries1:58 AM ADT Ian Browne Ian Browne @ianmbrowne BOSTON -- Every team has injuries. But lately, the Red Sox have had a barrage of them to some of their most important players. A recent trend reared its ugly head again in Tuesday night’s 10-7 loss to the Guardians in 11 innings. Star third baseman Rafael Devers injured his left knee making a 5-4 forceout on a grounder by Andrés Giménez in the top of the seventh inning. The extent of the injury is unknown at this point, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Devers is likely to get imaging Wednesday. Devers, Boston’s most potent hitter, wasn’t moving well in the clubhouse after the game. “I felt it on the ground ball when I threw to second base for the [attempted] double play,” said Devers. “Felt it there and after that, I couldn’t step on my leg. I don't know what to think about it right now. This is totally new. I’ve never had any issues with my legs. So that happened today. I don't know what's going on.”
Making it all the more frustrating for Devers is that he had just returned on Monday from a left shoulder injury that forced him to miss four consecutive games, not to mention two games in the first series of the season with the same ailment.
And Devers looked like he was getting his hitting groove back when he got the big hit in Boston’s stirring, five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning on Tuesday, hammering a two-run double to center that gave his team a 6-5 lead that held until Kenley Jansen’s blown save in the ninth.
“I’ve never been the kind of player that’s been injured,” said Devers. “Obviously, it’s frustrating to deal with another pain. So I just leave everything in God's hands to see what's going to happen, but it’s frustrating for sure.”
The injury to Devers was likely the most significant for the Red Sox in Tuesday’s game, but not the only one.
Righty starter Garrett Whitlock exited Tuesday night’s start against the Guardians after four innings and 56 pitches due to left oblique tightness.
Whitlock has been an early-season bright spot for Boston, posting a 1.96 ERA in his first four starts.
“I just had some tightness in my oblique, and they just felt like a precautionary move was to pull me out,” said Whitlock. “I felt a little something in the third inning, but that was it.”
Cora said the Red Sox will monitor Whitlock’s condition Wednesday before making any decisions.
Boston’s rotation, the bright spot of the team so far, is already down one starter in righty Nick Pivetta, who is on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow flexor strain. While Pivetta has been feeling better in recent days and has resumed throwing off flat ground, there is no word on when he will be activated.
The Red Sox are without two key players for the rest of the season in righty starter Lucas Giolito (right UCL surgery) and shortstop Trevor Story (left shoulder surgery).
Outfielder Tyler O’Neill, arguably the team’s early-season MVP, is out until at least Thursday following a collision with Devers during Monday’s game that left him with eight stitches on his forehead.
Vaughn Grissom, acquired from the Braves for Chris Sale to be the team’s starting second baseman, hasn’t played a game yet for his new team as he is currently on a Minor League rehab assignment after enduring a left hamstring strain and a left groin injury in Spring Training.
“It’s tough, man. It sucks,” said Jansen. “I’m not going to lie to you. It’s annoying. And that’s how it’s going for us lately. A healthy Boston Red Sox is a pretty good team.
“But right now, there’s nothing we can do about it. Hopefully, we can get healthy soon. I like what we have. It’s a young team with talent. They love to play baseball and try to win ballgames. You can see how we came back today, showed fight. Yeah, if everyone is healthy, [it would be] great for us.”
But the Red Sox, who are 9-9 after a 7-3 start, are a long way from being healthy.
“It sucks, but we’ve got to go [on],” said Cora. “We put together good at-bats halfway through the game, cleaned up a few things. At the end of the day, we need to play better.”

Red Sox slugger: Mistake on bases ‘low IQ baseball play’ and ‘unacceptable’
Published: Apr. 17, 2024, 2:14 a.m.

Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
BOSTON — Triston Casas doubled to left field to lead off the bottom of the second inning with the Red Sox down 2-0 to Cleveland on Tuesday.
But the slugger got picked off moments later with Wilyer Abreu at the plate and no outs. The Red Sox went on to lose 10-7 in 11 innings.
Guardians starter Tanner Bibee caught Casas leaving too early for third base. Bibee fired to third baseman José Ramírez for an easy out.
“It was a two-strike count,” Casas explained. “The third baseman shifted up into that 5-6 hole. And (Gabriel) Arias, the shortstop, stopped holding me on. And just given the count, I thought maybe they were maybe not paying attention to me as much. One of my goals when I go up to hit is to try to make the at-bat for the guy behind me as easy as possible. And I was trying to get to third base right there with less than one out. I knew Abreu was battling with Bibee. And I thought if I could get him in a situation where he just had to put the ball in play, that would be his best chance to get an RBI and get me in. But overall, based off situation and where we were in the game, it was very poor judgment and it was a low IQ baseball play for sure.
“So it shouldn’t have happened,” Casas added. “It’s unacceptable for that to have happened the way it did. It’s a learning experience for sure. Can’t happen again but not the right play based off the situation of where we were in the game.”
Manager Alex Cora added, “He just took off. There’s no excuse. He knows it. He just took off. ... We cannot push the envelope that way. We cannot do it. That’s the bottomline. Twenty-seven outs are too valuable in this game.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Tyler O’Neill avoids a concussion, but needs a few days after scary Fenway collision with Rafael Devers By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 16, 2024, 7:51 p.m.
The Red Sox can breathe a sigh of relief. Tyler O’Neill does not have a concussion.
O’Neill and Rafael Devers collided on a fly ball to short left field in the seventh inning of Monday’s loss to the Guardians. Devers ran back on the play from third base while O’Neill, playing left, ran in. As Devers recorded the out, the back of his head crashed into O’Neill’s face, causing both players to fall to the grass.
Both O’Neill and Devers were slow to get up. O’Neill walked off on his own power, but had his forehead busted open. He later received eight stitches above his left eye.
From manager Alex Cora’s perspective, neither O’Neill nor Devers was in the wrong.
“Everybody will say fly-ball communication, they suck at that. But it’s 35,000 people screaming. And it just so happens that two baseball players were trying to make a play,” Cora said before Tuesday’s game. “It’s hard. In Little League, you can say, ‘I got it. I got it.’ And, ‘take it, take it, take it.’ That happens in Little League. That ball was in the triangle, and they wanted to get out of the inning, and that just happened.”
Devers is OK and was in Tuesday’s lineup in the Sox’ 10-7 loss. However, he did leave the game in the seventh because of left knee discomfort and will undergo more imaging Wednesday. said O’Neill will need a few days. Even if he’s out for the rest of the series, that’s preferable to a trip to the injured list.
“I mean, this guy, he’s important. He’s important to this offense,” Cora said. “And you saw it yesterday. They had a lane there [throwing] all the lefties. He creates balance. And I think, obviously, the guy is a good hitter. He’s a good defender, good baserunner. And I’m glad that you know it’s just a few days and he should be back.”
The Sox had seven lefthanded hitters in Tuesday’s starting lineup — all except Connor Wong batting seventh and Ceddanne Rafaela in ninth. O’Neill is one of the few righthanded hitters in the lineup consistently, and the only one who’s a power threat, his seven homers leading the team in both that stat and extra-base hits.
Cora said that the Sox have had conversations about how their lineup will look when Vaughn Grissom returns, and have toyed with the idea of separating Jarren Duran and Devers at the top. O’Neill could be a fit; he already has been used to separate Devers and Triston Casas. Painful beginning
Just 18 games into the season, the Sox have already had nine players hit the injured list, with Lucas Giolito, Trevor Story, and Chris Murphy all out for the year. That group includes Nick Pivetta, who had only gone on the IL for COVID in 2021 before he hit the 15-day with a right flexor strain. “It’s not fun, but it is what it is,” said Cora. “We just got to be ready for today. The guys that are playing today got to do the job. That’s the attitude that we have. That’s the attitude they should have, the players. We’ve been talking to them like, we’re going to use everybody. We’re going to move people around. We’re gonna try to maximize matchups and especially where we’re at right now. They just have to be ready.” Pivetta is trending in the right direction, Cora said, after playing catch again Tuesday . . . Garrett Whitlock left the game after just four innings pitched with left oblique tightness. Whitlock said he felt it in the third inning, however he said the removal was just precautionary. It’s uncertain if he will make his next start . . . Bobby Dalbec took some reps in left field pre-game. He’s made starts at both corner infield spots this season, plus brief cameos at shortstop each of the past three seasons . . . Vaughn Grissom (groin) went 1 for 3 from the DH spot for Triple A Worcester on Tuesday while Rob Refsnyder (toe) played right field and homered.

Road-tested Guardians go for third straight win in Boston FLM
The Cleveland Guardians are getting comfortable with life on the road, which resumes Wednesday when they face the Boston Red Sox in the third game of a four-game series.
After winning the series opener 6-0 on Monday, Cleveland improved its road record to 9-2 this season by beating Boston 10-7 in 11 innings Tuesday.
"It's a testament to these guys," Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. "That first road trip was long. Coming out of spring training, being on the road for 10 games and then to come into a tough place to win. It's really hard to win here in Fenway."
Cleveland surrendered a 5-1 lead Tuesday, but forced extra innings by scoring a run off Boston closer Kenley Jansen in the ninth. The Guardians have won three in a row overall, and two of the victories came in extra innings.
"This group of guys doesn't quit," Vogt said. "They keep fighting. They believe in each other, they root for each other. We got something special brewing right now and the guys feel it."
Injuries continue to pile up for the Red Sox. Outfielder Tyler O'Neill wasn't in the lineup Tuesday, one day after he collided with third baseman Rafael Devers and required eight stitches to close a cut in his forehead.
Devers' two-run double gave Boston a 6-5 lead after six innings Tuesday, but he left the game after the seventh inning with discomfort in his left knee.
"With Raffy we're discussing if we're going to take imaging just to make sure everything is OK," Boston manager Alex Cora said following Tuesday's loss. "It came out of nowhere. There was a play he made in the seventh. He was kind of playing in the mini-shift and he kind of felt it there. We'll know more (Wednesday)."
In addition, Boston starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock left the game after four innings with oblique tightness. Whitlock allowed two runs on three hits, struck out one and walked one.
"They just felt like a precautionary move was to pull me out," Whitlock said. "I just felt a little something in the third inning, but that was it."
The Guardians are expected to start right-hander Ben Lively on Wednesday. Lively began the season on the 15-day injured list with a viral illness. He made two starts for Triple-A Columbus, but he hasn't not pitched in the majors this season.
Cleveland signed Lively last December. He spent the 2023 season with Cincinnati after a three-year stretch with the Samsung Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization. He's 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA in two career appearances (12 1/3 innings) against Boston.
Right-hander Tanner Houck (2-1, 2.04 ERA) is listed as Boston's probable starter. Houck has 19 strikeouts against two walks in 17 2/3 innings this season.
Houck is 0-1 with one save and a 3.52 ERA in seven career appearances (two starts) against Cleveland.
Tuesday's loss dropped Boston's home record to 2-6. The Red Sox are 1-3 in extra-inning games.
"We still have two games in this homestand," Cora said. "It's been a tough one so far, but we come here, win two games and get ready for Pittsburgh."

mlb game day Red Sox down 2-0 all ready and Casas in the 2nd gets thrown out trying to steal 3B.
hahahahahahahahahaah hahhahahahahahahaha hahahahahhahahahaha The Sox keep finding ways to lose. A couple more baserunning blunders and another error is last night's game. After being down 5-1, I didn't think there was any way our offense would come back in that game, but they did, only to have a blown save. Unreal. Just unreal. And the injuries keep piling up.

Mac Cerullo @maccerullo Rob Refsnyder is here in Boston for a scheduled off day. Plan is to go back to Worcester but feels ready to play, toe isn’t fully healed but it’s mostly a pain tolerance thing at this point.
Vaughn Grissom is here too. Still has some rehab work ahead of him in Worcester but plan is to take ground balls here at Fenway in a few.
Alex Cora says Garrett Whitlock is going to the IL. Primarily just to play it safe and hope is to activate him as soon as he’s eligible. Joe Jacques being called up to fill his spot.
Rafael Devers is in the lineup at DH today. More injury updates to come. 5:05 PM · Apr 17, 2024 ·

That line up is revolting and full disclaimer, I just got off the phone with my cable provider the Sport channels up here ( sportsnet is all Jays, and they plug in to other teams as as well) TSN ( plugs into ESPN games 3-4 week)
and with hockey and basketball starting up, I ordered the MLB package and was happy to channel surf games today
Now I can tune into the Red Sox and turn them off as I have the last few seasons.

Houck is the first Red Sox pitcher to venture into the 7th since last September (20th) Still out there at 75 pitches for the 8th
More dumb base running ended the 7th as the base runner who was safe made the turn to 2nd and thrown out
Cora did not look impressed, and I had a good laugh.
2-0 Good guys
