Houck throws 3-hitter in 2-0 win over Guardians for Boston's 1st CG shutout at Fenway since 2017 AP
BOSTON (AP) Tanner Houck pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for Boston's first complete-game shutout at Fenway Park in nearly seven years, and the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Connor Wong homered in the fourth, one inning after Boston scored its first run on a balk by Cleveland starter Ben Lively.
Houck (3-1) threw 69 of 94 pitches for strikes in his first career complete game, which took just 1 hour, 49 minutes. It was the fastest nine-inning game in the majors since Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game for Detroit against Cleveland took 1:44 on June 2, 2010.
“I think this is one of those nights where you probably get one, maybe two of these a season, if you’re lucky,” said Houck, adding it was the best he’s ever felt on a major league mound. “It’s where you just go out there and you feel like you can do no wrong. You can throw no wrong pitch in any count. So, I truly feel blessed to go up there and just help this team win.”
Houck walked none and finished one short of his season high for strikeouts. The 27-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.35 after four starts in his fifth big league season.
“I don’t know if he could pitch much better than he did tonight,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “You've got to tip your cap. That was an outstanding performance by him. Every pitch, didn’t throw anything over the heart of the plate. I think the two pitches he did, we got hits on, but just tip your cap.”
It was Boston's first complete-game shutout since Michael Wacha tossed a three-hitter in a 1-0 win at the Los Angeles Angels on June 6, 2022. No pitcher had accomplished the feat at home for the Red Sox since Brian Johnson threw a five-hitter against Seattle on May 27, 2017.
“Just throwing strikes with good stuff,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “There was never a thought of going to the bullpen, to be honest with you. That was his game and whatever happens, happens. He was really good."
Wong connected off Lively (0-1) with two outs in the fourth.
“Lively was outstanding as well,” Vogt said. “He threw the ball great, was efficient. Did his job, got us five. Couldn’t be more thrilled with the way Ben threw the ball. It was an outstanding, outstanding job by him.”
Lively, making his Guardians debut after signing as a free agent in December and then starting the season on the injured list with a viral illness, was called for a balk in the third with runners on second and third. It was the right-hander's first balk since his rookie season of 2017 with Philadelphia.
“It just felt great getting out there and getting fired up again,” Lively said. “You see (Houck’s performance), you’re like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s go. Me and you are going toe to toe right now.’ It gets me fired up and ready to get back out there, too.”
After leaving Tuesday’s game with left knee discomfort, Rafael Devers was in the Boston lineup at designated hitter rather than third base. He went hitless in four at-bats with three strikeouts.
Steven Kwan was 0 for 4 for Cleveland, snapping his eight-game hitting streak.
“We win tomorrow and we save the series," Cora said. "We all know we’re where at. The bullpen needed it, we all needed it. It was great.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Guardians: RHP Eli Morgan was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. RHP Wes Parsons was called up from Triple-A Columbus.
Red Sox: RHP Garrett Whitlock went on the 15-day IL with a left oblique strain. He exited Tuesday night's start against Cleveland after four innings. LHP Joe Jacques was called up from Triple-A Worcester to take Whitlock’s spot on the roster.
UP NEXT
The teams wrap up their four-game series Thursday. RHP Carlos Carrasco (0-1, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to start for Cleveland. In nine career appearances against the Red Sox, including seven starts, he is 1-4 with an 8.29 ERA.
Boston had not yet announced a starting pitcher.

Total domination: Houck tosses MLB's fastest game in nearly 14 years Righty cruises with MLB's first 'Maddux' of 2024 12:03 AM ADT Ian Browne

BOSTON -- In a topsy-turvy homestand for the Red Sox that has included a barrage of injuries, sloppy defense and some tough late-inning losses, Tanner Houck restored order on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
Not only did he hurl a shutout, but Houck completed a “Maddux" in a 2-0 victory over Cleveland that took just 1 hour, 49 minutes to complete -- the shortest nine-inning game since June 2, 2010 -- since Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game for Detroit.
That term, in honor of Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, refers to a shutout accomplished in fewer than 100 pitches.
Houck did the honors in 94 pitches, 69 of them strikes. It was the first shutout by a Red Sox pitcher since Michael Wacha on June 6, 2022 in Anaheim. And the first “Maddux” by a Boston hurler since Clay Buchholz on Aug. 31, 2014.
“I love it. It’s definitely a compliment. Obviously everyone knows Maddux and what he did for the game and how special he was,” Houck said. “To have that terminology used is definitely fun.”
In his three-hitter, Houck walked none and struck out nine. He faced 29 batters, two above the minimum.
In actuality, Houck took his "Madduxing" to another level with the speed and efficiency of his incredible outing.
The last pitcher to throw a “Maddux” with nine strikeouts or more in a game played in 1:50 or less? That would be Maddux himself on Aug. 20, 1995 in St. Louis.
Knowing what they were witnessing was something special, the Fenway crowd of 32,024 gave Houck a standing ovation when he came out for the ninth inning.
“He went out and he got a standing ovation,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “That's cool. That's what it's all about. And he deserves it. We’re very proud of him.“
Houck was so locked in he didn’t even hear the ovation.
“I just went out there business as usual,” Houck said. “Go out there and get strike one, strike two and get these guys out. You can bask in that stuff after. But definitely just going out there focused and knowing what I had to do.”
When you hear athletes talk about being in the zone, Houck was the definition of that on Wednesday.
“I think this is one of those nights where you'd probably get one, maybe two of these a season, if you're lucky,” Houck said. “To where you just go out there and you feel like you can do no wrong, you can throw no wrong pitch in any count.”
After years of trying to fulfill his promise and define his role, the 27-year-old is doing both thus far this season. Through four starts, Houck is 3-1 with a 1.35 ERA.
The Red Sox (10-9) improved to 3-6 on the homestand heading into Thursday afternoon’s finale and Cora acknowledged that Houck’s masterpiece changed the vibe after a tough last week.
“Huge,” said Cora. “Win one [Thursday] and we [split] the series. The bullpen needed it. We all needed it. “
The last pitcher to set foot on the bullpen mound for the Red Sox on Wednesday was Houck, when he was finished with his warm-up pitches.
It was pretty clear early on that Houck had everything working.
Houck threw 37 sliders, 32 splitters, 22 sinkers and three cutters, generating 19 swings and misses.
“He was throwing strikes,” Cora said. “And the stuff. The slider was really good. The split was great. He induced weak contact early on and he was in control too. I was just talking to Kenley [Jansen] and we said how it just seemed like was just playing catch with [catcher] Connor [Wong]. Some quick outs.
“There was never a thought of going to the bullpen to be honest with you. That was his game and whatever happens, happens. So we decided to just roll with him and it was really good.”
Wong, who belted a solo homer for Boston’s biggest hit of the night, had the best seat in the house.
“It was just a lot of fun,” said Wong. “He had all his pitches and mixed it really well. Really well. Really excited for him and happy for him. It was a fun nine innings.”
Houck was the first Red Sox starting pitcher to step on the mound in the seventh inning this season. It was the first time in Houck’s career he recorded more than 21 outs in a game.
Best game of his life?
“I’ll definitely put it in the top two. I think pitching in the playoffs in ’21 is definitely up there for me. That’s an experience I’ll never forget,” said Houck. “This was definitely number one for sure.”

Injuries & Moves: Whitlock to IL; Devers makes swift recovery April 17th, 2024
MLB.com
LATEST NEWS
April 17: RHP Garrett Whitlock placed on 15-day injured list with left oblique tightness; LHP Joe Jacques recalled from Triple-A Worcester Whitlock suffered the injury during his start on Tuesday, and had to come out after four innings and 54 pitches. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the club doesn't not deem it to be a serious injury and there's confidence he will be back after serving a minimum amount of time on the injured list. The earliest Whitlock is eligible to pitch again is May 1. The righty is off to a strong start with a 1-0 record and a 0.96 ERA in four starts.
To replace Whitlock on the roster, the Sox called up lefty reliever Jacques, who has allowed seven runs in four innings for Worcester this season.
April 17: Rafael Devers (left knee) back in lineup The Red Sox got good news on Devers, who had to leave Tuesday's game with left knee pain, but was back in the lineup on Wednesday as the designated hitter. There was a chance Devers was going to undergo imaging on Wednesday, but it was deemed unnecessary.
“They tested him yesterday," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "This morning, he texted [trainer] Brandon [Henry], 'Hey, I’m good to go.' They’re checking on him and everything. I think he just freaked … I think he just got scared. Hopefully that’s the case. We'll take care of him. If he says he can play, he can play. I know we wanted to make sure that the imaging was in case he needed something, just to make sure where we were but he doesn't need it and he’s a go."
April 17: OF Tyler O'Neill in holding pattern O'Neill knocked heads with teammate Devers in a collision on Monday and had to get eight stitches in his forehead. The original hope was he could be back in the lineup as soon as Thursday. However, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has backed off that and O'Neill likely won't play until this weekend in Pittsburgh at the earliest.
"See how it goes tonight," said Cora. "He’s doing OK. He went through his workout, I want to say not great, but not bad. I want to say he’s in between. We’ll keep checking on him. Nothing baseball related [yet]. He'll stay inside and we'll see how he feels tomorrow.”
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) Expected return: TBD Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13, retroactive to April 11, with a sprained left wrist. He isn't progressing as well as originally expected.
"He’s going to get some imaging today," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on April 17. "He didn’t feel great swinging the bat. The defensive part of it, he’s OK. It was a little bit stiff yesterday when he hit and they’re going to check on him." (Last updated: April 17)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: Late April/early May Grissom continued his Minor League rehab assignment on April 16 for Triple-A Worcester, going 1-for-3 as the DH. Thus far, Grissom has played three games, all at DH. He got a day off on April 17, and is expected to play second base in Worcester on April 18. Given that Grissom didn't play any Spring Training games, his rehab could be on the lengthier side. The maximum time for a position player on a Minor League rehab assignment is 20 days. (Last updated: April 17)
RHP Bryan Mata (right hamstring strain) Expected return: May at the earliest Mata came to camp out of options, meaning he needed to earn a spot in the bullpen to avoid being designated for assignment. Instead, he suffered a hamstring strain early in camp and now needs to get healthy before the club can make a decision on his future. Mata is getting closer, as he is throwing bullpens, according to Red Sox manager Alex Cora. (Last updated: April 17)

Red Sox tab Thursday starter, a lefty reliever who thrived as opener in 2023
Published: Apr. 17, 2024, 10:34 p.m.

Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON — Just like he did six times in 2023, lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino will serve as the Red Sox’ opener in Thursday’s series finale against the Guardians.
Boston announced Bernardino, who has a 1.69 ERA in 5⅓ bullpen innings this season after starting the year in Triple-A, as its starter opposite Cleveland veteran Carlos Carrasco for Thursday’s game. Manager Alex Cora said righty Cooper Criswell, who was called up to start Saturday against the Angels and allowed two runs in four innings, will likely see a large, multi-inning out of the bullpen. So expect Criswell to be the bulk reliever behind Bernardino, who is likely starting because most of the the Guardians’ top three hitters (Steven Kwan, Andres Gimenez and Josh Naylor) are left-handed. The bullpen will be fresh after Tanner Houck pitched a three-hit, complete game shutout in Wednesday’s 2-0 win. Sample HTML block
Bernardino was excellent as an opener in six starts last year while Boston’s rotation was banged up. He allowed just two earned runs and seven hits in nine innings as a starter while recording 14 strikeouts. The Sox were 3-3 in games he started, often as an opener for Nick Pivetta. Coincidentally, Bernardino’s start will come in part because Pivetta (mild flexor strain) is on the 15-day injured list along with righty Garrett Whitlock, who was placed on the IL on Wednesday with a slight oblique strain. Thursday would be Pivetta’s day to pitch.
With two of five starters out, the Red Sox will need to fill rotation openings just once on a road trip to Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford are in line to pitch on regular rest Friday and Saturday against the Pirates, but the Red Sox will need someone for Sunday’s series finale at PNC Park. After that, they plan to take advantage of Monday’s off day to reset the group. Tanner Houck, Bello and Crawford will be on normal rest to pitch in Cleveland next week; Boston has three off days in an 11-day span from April 29-May 9 and Pivetta and Whitlock could both be back by the first week of the month.
Criswell and long reliever Chase Anderson are the top options to make starts in Whitlock’s absence; at Triple-A, recent trade acquisition Naoyuki Uwasawa and journeyman Jason Alexander could get the call. Reliever Josh Winckowski is not under consideration to move to a starting role anytime soon, Cora said before the game.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Garrett Whitlock’s promising start to the Red Sox season put on hold with trip to 15-day IL, but Rafael Devers back in the lineup at DH By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 17, 2024, 6:36 p.m.
Rafael Devers texted Red Sox manager Alex Cora Wednesday morning and indicated he was OK to play that night after tweaking his knee in Tuesday’s game. Devers was in the lineup against the Guardians as the DH and went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the Sox’ 2-0 win.
However, the Sox couldn’t totally escape the injury bug, placing Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list late Wednesday afternoon.
The Sox removed Whitlock from Tuesday’s game because of tightness in his left oblique after just four innings and 54 pitches.
“I felt a little something in the third inning and that was it,” Whitlock said after the game.
Whitlock has pitched well this season, going 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four starts. Yet health has always been a question mark for Whitlock. But the Sox don’t see his latest injury as a big issue, considering he’s dealt with elbow/arm injuries — including Tommy John surgery — throughout his career.
“This [injury] is not difficult,” Cora said before Wednesday’s game. “I mean, actually, he fought us and I was like, you don’t have to prove to people that you can stay healthy. This is on us. We actually took it away from his hands. It’s early enough that it doesn’t make sense to push him then something worse might happen.”
Head athletic trainer Brandon Henry initially noticed Whitlock grinding through Tuesday’s start. That’s when he urged Cora that he needed to pull Whitlock from the game.
“He’s like, ‘We’ve got to take him out,’ ” added Cora. “And then today, Brandon was on point with what thought it was, and he recommended this.”
The Sox don’t believe Whitlock will need more than the minimum amount of days before returning.
Lefthander Joe Jacques was recalled from Triple A Worcester to fill the roster spot vacated by Whitlock.
Rotation shuffle
The Sox are now down two starting pitchers in Nick Pivetta (elbow) and Whitlock. Cora ruled out Josh Winckowski joining the rotation, preferring the righthander remain in the bullpen.
“We’ll see how it goes in the upcoming days,” said Cora. “We’ve got an offday right after Pittsburgh, so the schedule is going to give us a blow.”
Cooper Criswell, who pitched in place of Pivetta last Saturday, plugs just one of the spots in the rotation. Pivetta, who went on the IL April 9 (retroactive April 6), could return Sunday, but he is just playing catch at this point and has yet to throw off a mound. There’s a chance he could need a rehab start, too.
Whitlock’s turn in the rotation would be Sunday. The team could employ an opener or make it a bullpen game. The Sox could then reset their bullpen Monday, an offday.
The rotation would then turn back to Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Criswell, and Kutter Crawford, buying the Sox a bit more time. O’Neill OK, not great
Tyler O’Neill is doing just OK, and the team is still monitoring him for a concussion. Cora said that O’Neill, who collided with Devers on Sunday in an attempt to catch a fly ball, had difficulty getting through a workout Wednesday.
“I want to say not great, but not bad,” said Cora. “He’s like in between. So we’ll keep checking on him. Nothing baseball-related. He’ll stay inside and we’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”
Devers injury scare
Devers looked distraught after Tuesday’s game while seated at his locker. Almost in disbelief as if he knew something occurred in his left knee other than regular soreness.
That Devers played Wednesday, based on his emotions Tuesday night, was unexpected.
“He just got scared,” said Cora. “Hopefully, that’s the case. We will take care of him. If he says he can play, he can play.”
The Red Sox ultimately determined that Devers didn’t require imaging on his knee, despite initially indicating that he did. Setback for Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) had a setback and will undergo some imaging. Cora said that it’s tough for Gonzalez to swing … Rob Refsnyder (toe) will play in the outfield Thursday and DH Friday for Worcester. Refsnyder is close to a return … Vaughn Grissom will play second base Thursday for Worcester after being the DH in his first three games.

Red Sox bring rested bullpen into series finale vs. Guardians FLM
The Boston Red Sox will enter their Thursday afternoon game against the visiting Cleveland Guardians with a rested bullpen. Tanner Houck made sure of that.
Houck tossed a complete game in Boston's 2-0 triumph on Wednesday. He gave up three hits -- all singles -- and struck out nine without walking a batter. Houck didn't throw more than 13 pitches in any inning.
"It seemed like he was just playing catch with (catcher Connor Wong)," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "There was never a thought of going to the bullpen, to be honest with you. That was his game and whatever happens, happens. We felt like he was going to keep the ball in the ballpark so just roll with him. He was really good."
The victory came after Cleveland won the first two games of the four-game series. The Guardians prevailed 6-0 on Monday and 10-7 in 11 innings on Tuesday.
"Huge win because if we win (Thursday) we save the series," Cora said. "The bullpen needed it. We all needed it."
The Red Sox didn't get a complete-game pitching performance last season. The team's most recent complete game came from Michael Wacha, when he shut out the Los Angeles Angels on June 6, 2022.
Cleveland saw its three-game winning streak end on Wednesday.
"I don't know if he can pitch much better than he did tonight," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said of Houck. "You have to tip your cap. That was an outstanding performance by him. ... Everything was working for him."
Wong remained hot at the plate, collecting two hits, including a solo home run. Wong is batting .444 (8-for-18) with three home runs and seven RBIs in his past six games.
The Red Sox, who also received two hits from Jarren Duran, used Rafael Devers as the designated hitter on Wednesday. Devers left the Tuesday game after the seventh inning with left knee soreness. He struck out three times in four hitless at-bats on Wednesday.
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco (0-1, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Guardians on Thursday. Carrasco took the loss in his latest outing, when Cleveland fell 3-2 to the New York Yankees on Saturday. He allowed a run on five hits and walked five in 4 2/3 innings.
Carrasco is 1-4 with an 8.29 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) against the Red Sox. He has allowed 32 runs (31 earned) on 59 hits in 33 2/3 innings vs. Boston.
Boston is expected to counter with an opener, as Brennan Bernardino (0-1, 1.69 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start of the season. The left-hander has faced the Guardians six times, all in relief, going 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 5 2/3 innings.
Cora said right-hander Cooper Criswell (0-0, 4.50 ERA) also would pitch at some point on Thursday. Criswell allowed two runs in four innings on Saturday in his first start of the season as the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2. He struck out four and walked one.
Criswell has not faced Cleveland in his career.
"We'll decide what we're going to do," Cora said. "Coop is going to have a big part of it, but we don't know how we're going to do it, if he's going to start or if we'll go with an opener and then go with him."
