Injuries & Moves: O'Neill to IL; Progress for Yoshida, Casas May 29th, 2024
MLB.com
May 29: OF Tyler O'Neill placed on 10-day IL (retroactive to May 26) with right knee inflammation; INF Enmanuel Valdez recalled from Triple-A Worcester O'Neill underwent imaging on his balky right knee on Wednesday that revealed no structural damage. The Red Sox are hoping that a brief stint on the IL will be enough for O'Neill to start feeling better. The right-handed hitter is eligible to return on June 5, which is the final game of the upcoming six-game homestand. O'Neill exited a 6-3 loss to the Brewers on May 25 with discomfort in his knee. O'Neill was clearly bothered by the ailment before going on the IL, as he was hitless in his last 15 at-bats with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
The 25-year-old Valdez has played in 28 Major League games this season, making 26 starts at second base and batting .156 (14-for-90) with two home runs. The left-handed hitter has also played in 20 games with Worcester, batting .230 (17-for-74) with an .887 OPS, six home runs, and 10 RBIs.
May 29: DH Masataka Yoshida should start swinging in 'upcoming days' Yoshida, Boston's primary DH, has been on the 10-day injured list since May 1, retroactive to April 29, with a left thumb strain. He is trying to find a thumb guard that will ease the discomfort when he swings the bat. Yoshida hasn't been permitted to swing since he has been on the IL, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that should happen in "the upcoming days."
May 29: 1B Triston Casas 'feeling great' Boston's starting first baseman, who hasn't played since April 20 due to torn cartilage in his left rib cage, is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on June 21. The way things have been progressing lately, he might be able to reach that target. Casas will be examined by the team's medical staff by the end of this week. At that point, Casas should have a better idea of when he can start swinging the bat. Casas has been doing other baseball activities, including fielding and throwing.
"He's progressing fast," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "So hopefully we can add stuff to what he's doing, but he's feeling great
RHP Bryan Mata (right lat strain) Expected return: TBD Mata, who was in the late stages of his comeback from a right hamstring strain, has now been diagnosed with a right lat strain. The Red Sox have stopped Mata's Minor League rehab assignment, which means he can start with a fresh 30-day clock once he is cleared to pitch in games again.
Mata, Boston's No. 27 prospect, is out of options, meaning he needs to be placed on the Major League roster once he is healthy to avoid being designated for assignment. (Last updated: May 29)
RHP Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement) Expected return: June The reliever will continue his Minor League rehab assignment on May 30 when he pitches at Triple-A Worcester. That will be Mata's fourth appearance. He should be fairly close to being activated.
"The stuff is good," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "It’s just a matter of going through the progression, going back to back, all that stuff. But he’s throwing the ball well.” (Last updated: May 29)

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Tyler O’Neill goes on Red Sox injured list with knee inflammation By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated May 29, 2024, 6:25 p.m.
BALTIMORE — The Red Sox placed Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day injured list Wednesday (retroactive to May 26) with right knee inflammation.
O’Neill injured his knee against the Brewers Saturday, the outfielder leaving after the seventh inning. He traveled to Baltimore with the club but returned to Boston to undergo an MRI Wednesday. Doctors didn’t identify any structural damage, but O’Neill experienced enough pain to require a stint on the IL
“He doesn’t feel right,” said manager Alex Cora ahead of a 6-1 loss in the series finale against the Orioles. “ We have to respect that and then go from there.”
The Sox knew O’Neill had a history of being injury prone when they acquired him in an offseason trade with the Cardinals.
The Sox were very careful in how they utilized O’Neill, giving him days off when he needed a breather or slotting him into the DH spot when he needed a break in the field.
“It happens, right?” said Cora. And I still believe this guy is going to play a lot of games. We’re getting to know each other. But I think we’ve done everything possible to keep him on the field. He’s done everything possible to stay on the field. He should be back soon.”
The Sox don’t believe this is a major issue, and O’Neill could return next Wednesday. Despite a recent skid after returning from the IL because of a concussion, O’Neill is hitting .236/.343/.500 with an .843 OPS and 11 homers. Rafaela adjusting
Ceddanne Rafaela is learning on the fly in the big leagues — especially at the plate. While he’s been a wizard at both shortstop and in center field, the offensive component has been a struggle. Rafaela, who went 0 for 4 Wednesday with a strikeout, came into the night hitting .211 in 54 games, striking out at a 25.8 percent clip.
The Sox decided Rafaela needed to make a tweak, starting with his hands. Rafaela held his hands near his head at the plate, but has since lowered them to cut down on all the movement so he could catch up with the fastball
“Be on time,” said Cora. We’ve been talking about it, showing him examples. It happens that we’re here, too, [in Baltimore] and can use [the Orioles] as an example of how short they are to the ball and how they use their hands. He does this drill in the cage that actually he started with his hands [low] and hitting coach Pete Fatse challenged him to do it during batting practice and he was covering everything.”
Cora began referencing the Orioles’ hand placement last year so they could catch up with the fastball in a league where velocity is everywhere. Rafael Devers even lowered his hands coming into the spring so he, too, could be more on time. Now, it’s Rafaela’s turn.
“We just got to make sure he understands that it takes time to adjust,” said Cora. “It’s not about instant results. But at the same time, you’ve been struggling right, so it’s a good time to do that and hopefully he can take off.” Yoshida close to swinging again
Masataka Yoshida (thumb strain) is not swinging yet, but is set to in the upcoming days. Cora said Yoshida will wear a hand guard to cover his injured thumb . . . Bryan Mata (lat strain) is in Fort Myers, Fla., after being taken off his rehab assignment. Cora said the injury is similar to the one Brayan Bello suffered last month, which resulted in an IL stint for the righthander . . . Rafael Devers had his left shoulder taped, the same shoulder that gave him issues earlier in the season and spring training. “My shoulder is bothering me, but [overall] I feel good],” he said. “I feel like the swing is there.” . . . Red Sox prospect Richard Fitts flirted with a perfect game for the WooSox Wednesday before it was snapped via a single in the bottom of the eighth. Fitts finished with seven plus innings, one hit, seven strikeouts, and zero earned runs . . . Enmanuel Valdez was added to the Sox’ big-league roster, taking the place of O’Neill . . . The Sox travel back to Boston and will begin a four-game set against the Tigers Thursday. Nick Pivetta, Tanner Houck, Cooper Criswell and Bello will round out the rotation for the series

Evenly matched Red Sox, Tigers look for bounce-back wins FLM
The Boston Red Sox will start a six-game homestand and a four-game weekend series when they meet the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.
Both teams are coming off losses on Wednesday, with the Red Sox falling 6-1 to the Baltimore Orioles while the Tigers dropped a 10-2 decision to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Dominic Smith's second-inning RBI gave Boston a lead on Wednesday, but it was short-lived. A Gunnar Henderson grand slam in the bottom of the inning marked the big blow against Kutter Crawford.
"That inning just got away from us, and they did what they do," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "(The Orioles are) a complete team. They do a lot of good stuff, and they keep getting better."
Connor Wong scored the only run for the Red Sox. He was 2-for-4 on the day.
Next up is a Detroit club that has a nearly identical record to Boston; both teams have 28 losses. The Red Sox enter Thursday at .500, with the Tigers having played one less game and are 27-28.
Boston right-hander Nick Pivetta (2-3, 4.20 ERA) will look to bounce back from a 6-3 loss Saturday to the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed seven hits and five runs and three strikeouts -- including the 1,000th of his MLB career -- across 3 1/3 innings.
Pivetta has pitched at least five innings and allowed two or fewer runs in four of his six starts this season but was disappointed by this most recent outing, which included three walks.
"I'm only going to pitch well if I don't walk guys. I got behind guys and walked guys," he said. "I paid for it, regardless of the contact, getting into those counts, and walking guys led to damage. I wasn't able to get the job done."
Pivetta has two career appearances (one start) against the Tigers and is 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings.
The Tigers had a busy Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader against Pittsburgh. In Game 1, Detroit ace Tarik Skubal threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three singles in an 8-0 win.
However, a four-game winning streak was snapped in the nightcap, a 10-2 loss.
Matt Vierling was a bright spot against Pirates rookie sensation Paul Skenes in Game 2, hitting his fourth homer in a three-game span. He has seven homers this season after hitting just 10 in 2023.
"I'm seeing a lot of awesomeness," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said of Vierling. "Is that a word? He's taken a lot of work that he's been doing behind the scenes into the game. The pull-side in the air, we've talked about it enough, now we're watching it. He's been incredible."
Detroit's Jack Flaherty (1-4, 3.84) will aim to continue a current run of five straight starts of at least six innings, though three of his losses have come in that stretch. The right-hander struck out nine in back-to-back outings. He took the loss in his most recent start May 23 against the Toronto Blue Jays, giving up three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 9-1 loss.
Flaherty will make his second career start against Boston. The first came in a no-decision on Sept. 9, 2023, when he pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs.

Jack Flaherty allows 1 hit over 6 2/3 innings and Tigers hit 3 home runs in 5-0 win over Red Sox AP
BOSTON (AP) Jack Flaherty allowed one hit over 6 2/3 innings, Akil Baddoo, Riley Greene and Gio Urshela hit home runs and the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 5-0 on Thursday night.
Flaherty (2-4) carried a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings. His bid was snapped when Boston outfielder Rob Refsnyder singled into left field on a 3-2 pitch. The only other Red Sox player to reach against Flaherty came in the fifth when Rafael Devers opened the inning with a walk.
“I always know. For me, no nerves ever get involved. At that point, it’s about going deep and executing one pitch at a time,” Flaherty said.
Flaherty struck out nine and threw 66 of his 104 pitches for strikes. He was still featuring a mid 90s fastball before getting taken out with Detroit up 2-0.
“He had relatively smooth innings, no pressure whatsoever,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. “I wanted to tell (Flaherty) that he did a hell of a job and did all he needed to do. He wanted to stay in the game but went to the dugout and cheered on (reliever Alex Faedo).”
Boston finished with two hits and four runners. The Red Sox were held hitless through six innings as recently as last Saturday against Milwaukee.
“We chased in some counts, but (Flaherty) is a different pitcher. They’ve made some adjustments with him and he’s getting more swings and misses,” Boston manager Alex Cora said.
After walking the leadoff batter, Boston right-hander Nick Pivetta (2-4) tied Roger Clemens for the Red Sox record with eight consecutive strikeouts. His bid for nine straight punchouts was snapped on a groundball to second base to lead off the fourth inning.
Baddoo, recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, produced the game’s first run with one swing. With one down in the fifth, the Detroit outfielder sent the ball into the first row of Green Monster seats.
Detroit made it 2-0 in the sixth when No. 9 hitter Carson Kelly tripled into the right-field corner and scored on Mark Canha’s single. Pivetta exited after allowing two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked two.
“Liked the way I started, didn’t like the way I finished,” Pivetta said.
The Tigers broke the game open with three runs in the eighth including Greene’s two-run homer and Urshela’s homer.
“He was incredible and the numbers show that," Greene said about playing behind Flaherty. “I got to be in center field for it and seeing where he was pitching guys. Watching him execute all those pitches was pretty fun to watch.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Tigers: RHP Shelby Miller (ulnar nerve irritation) will make his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo on Friday. He appeared in 15 games for Detroit before undergoing a procedure to remove scar tissue a few weeks ago. “We need him to be good when he gets back, not just healthy,” manager A.J. Hinch said.
Red Sox: RHP Garrett Whitlock underwent an internal brace procedure on his damaged UCL on Thursday. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and had his latest procedure on his arm performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas. … OF Masataka Yoshida (left thumb strain) is taking swings off the tee. Yoshida has been on the IL since May 1 (retroactive to April 29). … 1B Triston Casas (rib strain) hopes to be cleared by doctors to swing a bat soon. He continues to take groundballs. Casas hasn’t appeared in a major league game since April 20.
UP NEXT
Detroit RHP Kenta Maeda (2-1, 5.80) faces Boston RHP Tanner Houck (4-5, 1.90) on Friday night.

Man on fire: Pivetta ties record with 8 straight K's 1:10 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- Jack Flaherty and the Tigers were trying to do something historic and no-hit the Red Sox at Fenway Park for the first time since Hall of Famer Jim Bunning did the honors -- fittingly with the Tigers -- on July 20, 1958.
While Detroit’s impressive righty fell eight outs shy thanks to Rob Refsnyder's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, Nick Pivetta tied Roger Clemens for a slice of Red Sox history earlier in the night.
Though the excitement was diminished because Boston lost, 5-0, Pivetta was electric in those early innings, when he struck out eight straight consecutive batters.
Clemens is the only other Boston pitcher to pull off that feat, and he did it in one of the best outings in club history, when he set an AL/NL record by striking out 20 Mariners on April 29, 1986.
Did Pivetta have any idea he had a chance to break a record set by the legendary Rocket?
“No, I was just kind of focused on the game,” Pivetta said. “The Red Sox have been around longer than I have. I’m sure there's a ton of team records to beat up there, but, yeah, it’s cool to do.”
Coming off a frustrating performance against the Brewers during which he allowed five runs in the third inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, Pivetta bounced back nicely in this one.
Over 5 2/3 innings, he allowed three hits and two runs while walking two and striking out nine. Pivetta had 16 whiffs, half of them coming on sweepers.
On a night Flaherty’s dominance left the Red Sox with no margin for error, Pivetta was left with mixed emotions about his performance.
“In between,” Pivetta said. “I liked the way I started. I didn’t like the way I finished. Needed to keep the team in the game better than I did. Disappointed by the leadoff triple. I think that one hurt the most.”
The leadoff triple Pivetta spoke of was hit by No. 9 hitter Carson Kelly to lead off the sixth, and it led to Detroit taking a 2-0 lead. Akil Baddoo was the first Tiger to get a hit off Pivetta, ripping a one-out homer over the Monster in the fifth.
Though Flaherty won the duel, he paid his respects to Pivetta.
“Nick’s a stud, man. He came out, he shoved, did his thing,” Flaherty said.
In the short term, it went down as a loss for Pivetta. But the long-term benefit is that he regained his feel for the sweeper that turned into his best weapon during his breakout in the second half of last season.
“He had a couple of different breaking balls that he was throwing, a bit of harder one and then a sweeper,” credited Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “He never conceded anything good to hit. A couple of our righties were saying it was starting in at them and then finishing off the plate. That’s incredible movement.”
Pivetta’s streak started when he struck out Mark Canha on a 3-2 sweeper for the second out of the first inning. The righty again went full to Gio Urshela and got him looking at a 93.5 mph heater.
He struck out the side in the second, getting Colt Keith (sweeper) and Baddoo (four-seamer) looking, and Spencer Torkelson (sweeper) swinging.
Back came Pivetta with a dominant third inning, when he again struck out the side. Javier Báez swung through Pivetta’s sweeper to open the frame. Kelly also swung and missed at a strikeout for the second out. Pivetta tied Clemens when he got Matt Vierling on, yes, another sweeper.
Riley Greene snuffed out Pivetta’s attempt to surpass Clemens when he grounded out to second to open the fourth.
Pivetta came just two punchouts away from tying three pitchers (Corbin Burnes, Aaron Nola and Hall of Famer Tom Seaver) for the AL/NL record of 10 straight.
“He was really good,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “Today he was able to use all his pitches. He elevated and expanded with the sweeper and we didn’t do much offensively.”
The Red Sox (28-29) have lost five of their past seven, and a troubling trend continued as they slipped to 1-8 in the opening game of a series at Fenway Park this season.
“Luckily, we still have a lot of season left, but we do need to put the pedal on the metal and kind of put everything together,” Pivetta said.

May 30: RHP Garrett Whitlock undergoes right elbow UCL repair with internal brace Whitlock won’t pitch again this season after having his UCL repaired by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas in Birmingham, Ala., on Thursday. The good news was that the righty was able to avoid Tommy John reconstruction surgery and instead underwent an internal brace repair, which is becoming more frequent for pitchers with UCL injuries. Whitlock should return at some point during the 2025 season. He made four starts for the Red Sox this season, going 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA.
May 30: DH Masataka Yoshida starts swinging off tee Roughly a month after he went on the injured list with a left thumb strain, Yoshida started swinging the bat again, starting with tee work Thursday. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Yoshida's recovery time would depend on "feel."

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox manager Alex Cora expresses interest in working with brother and mentor Joey By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated May 31, 2024, 12:19 a.m.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora wouldn’t mind working with his older brother, Joey.
In fact, ahead of Thursday night’s 5-0 loss to the Tigers, the younger Cora vouched for Joey, Detroit’s third base coach, to be a member of his staff in the near future.
“He’s a good coach, man,” Cora said. “Hopefully, I know he’s been talking about retirement, like probably one more year. I always dream [for] him to be part of my coaching staff. It hasn’t happened. Hopefully in the future, we can convince him not to retire. [Just] give me one year. So we’ll see.”
Cora didn’t always feel that way, though, especially when he first took over the Sox in 2018. He wanted to ensure that he established himself as a big league manager.
“I think at that point, where I was, it was going to feel very awkward,” Cora said. “He’s still my mentor and some conversations that we have on the phone, it feels like he knows more about the Red Sox than I do. I don’t want him to be kind of like the boss. I think where I’m at now and where I’m going to be in the future, I’m older, I feel very comfortable running an organization. I feel like the relationship will be a lot better. I think at that time, it was going to be very, very awkward.”
If Cora indeed wants his brother on staff, it might not come with the Red Sox. Cora is in the last year of his contract and hasn’t been offered an extension. The 48-year-old is respected around the game, and would certainly draw interest from a number of clubs as a free agent. Related: Dustin Pedroia and Jonathan Papelbon were obvious for Red Sox Hall of Fame but Trot Nixon was stunned to be in Class of 2024
Joey, 59, has been coaching since 2004, and similar to when he was a player for 11 years in the majors, is known for his serious nature, the opposite of his little brother. He has received some criticism for his coaching at third, too, but Alex Cora believes that it was unwarranted.
“When he was in Pittsburgh, a lot of people said that he was the worst third base coach in the big leagues and then with the Mets he was the best one,” he said. " I think at the end, it’s personnel and what you expect from your offense. People have this idea, like, when you’re struggling offensively, don’t be aggressive. The way he sees it, he’s like, if we’re not scoring runs, we better push it. If not, we don’t have any chances.”
Perhaps the brothers will be a part of the same personnel. The question, though, is where? Surgery for Whitlock
Garrett Whitlock underwent a successful right elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair with internal brace. It was performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedics Center in Birmingham, Ala. The Sox righthander is expected to make a full recovery which will likely take 10-12 months … Masataka Yoshida (thumb sprain) is slowly progressing and is swinging off a tee, Cora said. On Wednesday in Baltimore, Cora noted that Yoshida will wear a guard on the thumb in order to protect the area. The designated hitter’s return from the injured list is all about how he feels … Triston Casas (rib strain) is progressing rapidly and taking grounders at first base. Casas saw a doctor Thursday and the club will know at a later date when he can begin swinging a bat … Tyler O’Neill (knee inflammation) is doing OK, and nothing is structurally wrong, Cora reiterated. The Sox are hopeful the outfielder’s stint on the injured list will be a short one … The club honored newly inducted Red Sox Hall of Famers Dustin Pedroia, Trot Nixon, Jonathan Papelbon, and front office executive Elaine Weddington Steward. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and team president Sam Kennedy were on the field to honor the group.

Just a heads up the game tonight is on Apple TV
Tigers look to keep it going on road against Red Sox FLM
A night after Jack Flaherty took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, the Detroit Tigers will look to post their second straight win to begin a four-game series against the host Boston Red Sox on Friday.
Flaherty got the backing of three solo home runs on the way to a 5-0 win Thursday, including Akil Baddoo's first of the season.
Riley Greene and Gio Urshela also homered late, helping the Tigers move to 5-1 in their past six games and break a four-game skid on the road.
"(Boston starter Nick Pivetta) is one of those guys you just grind out, have good ABs and try to get to the 'pen," Greene said.
Kenta Maeda (2-1, 5.80 ERA) looks to keep Detroit up to its winning ways. He returned from the 15-day injured list due to illness to make his most recent start, pitching five shutout innings while allowing just four hits against the Toronto Blue Jays last Friday.
Maeda will have quite the act to follow after Flaherty allowed one hit and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings in the series opener.
"I've seen a pretty good version of Jack Flaherty (before), but this might have been his best game just given the ballpark and the atmosphere and just the variety of pitches that he needed to throw," Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said.
Maeda has not lost a decision since April 6 against the Oakland Athletics. He is 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA across three career starts (12 innings) against Boston.
The Red Sox were limited to two hits and fell to 2-5 in their past seven games and 2-6 in their past eight at home.
Tanner Houck (4-5, 1.90) will look to carry Boston out of those skids after he took a tough-luck no-decision Sunday in his start against the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings in Boston's 2-1 win.
Despite logging just one win in his past seven starts, Houck has worked at least 5 2/3 innings in each of his 11 outings and ranks fourth among qualifying MLB pitchers in ERA this season.
It's early but he was asked about the American League Cy Young Award. According to MassLive, Houck is not allowing himself to look that far ahead.
"Only 11 starts deep. So not even on the radar," Houck said. "Take it day by day. Keep getting better each day. Have a quality game of catch and then show up the next day and do it all again. And just try to repeat that as many times as you can."
Houck, who shut out the Tampa Bay Rays over seven innings in his latest win on May 20, is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two appearances (one start) against Detroit.

The Red Sox showed once again they are going to need more than just pitching By Rob Bradford WEEI 93.7 7 hours ago
Alex Cora proclaimed during his weekly appearance on the 'Jones and Mego Show' Thursday afternoon that he was confident the Red Sox would be able to stay in the race because of their pitching.
But a few hours later, Cora and Co. were once again reminded hitting needs to be a part of the equation at some point.
For the second time in the last three home games, the Red Sox found themselves without a hit in the seventh inning. This time it was Detroit starter Jack Flaherty who held the Sox hitless through 6 1/3 frames, paving the way to the Tigers' 5-0 win at Fenway Park.
While Rob Refsnyder's one-out single in the seventh ruined Flaherty's no-hit bid, it did nothing to prevent the Red Sox from falling under .500.
Cora's proclamation regarding the Sox' pitching did, for the most part, hold true to form, with Nick Pivetta tying Roger Clemens' team record by fanning eight batters starting with one out in the eighth inning. And it wasn't until Akil Baddoo's leadoff homer in the fifth that the Sox starter allowed a hit.
"Nick’s a stud, man. He came out, he shoved, did his thing," Flaherty said.
But even with Pivetta only giving up a pair of runs in 5 1/3 innings, the Sox didn't have a chance thanks to their continued offensive struggles at home.
That was in large part to Flaherty, a pitcher who has revitalized his career with the Tigers after signing a one-year, $14 million deal this past offseason. The righty struck out nine for a third straight outing, while giving up two or fewer earned runs in five of his six road appearances.
For his former high school teammate at Harvard-Westlake (CA), Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito, this version of Flaherty was a blast from the past.
"I tune into his outings throughout the year and obviously today, fastball command, pinpoint. Slider is working. It's the best I have seen him in a long time," said Giolito, who was two years ahead of Flaherty in high school. "After dealing with some injuries, I know he feels healthy and his stuff is playing big-time."
In the Sox' 12 home games since May 2, they have managed more than three runs just three times. Over that span, the Red Sox have totaled the seventh-fewest runs in baseball.
It marked the second time this season the Sox have been held to as few as two hits, having managed just a pair in an April 9 loss to the Orioles. It was the fifth time Cora's club has been shutout.
Note: The Red Sox still haven't been no-hit at home since July 20, 1958 when Jim Bunning went the distance against a lineup that included Ted Williams.
