Red Sox win: Enmanuel Valdez hits 2 HR, Ceddanne Rafaela makes diving catch Published: Jun. 01, 2024, 6:33 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com BOSTON — Enmanuel Valdez isn’t a prototypical No. 5 hitter or DH. He entered 14-for-91 (.154).
But Valdez, who Boston recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday to take injured Tyler O’Neill’s spot on the active roster, belted two homers and a double as the DH out of the fifth spot Saturday.
All his hits came against Tigers starter Reese Olson who entered with a 1.92 ERA. It was his third time starting a game in the five hole this season.
He helped the Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Tigers here at Fenway Park.
Valdez’s 399-foot home run to right-center field in the second inning tied the game 1-1. He connected on a 94.9 mph fastball from Olson. It left his bat with a 106.4 mph exit velocity.
Valdez doubled and scored on Reese McGuire’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to put Boston ahead 3-1.
His second homer, a two-run blast, came in the sixth inning. He hit it 318 feet, wrapping it around Pesky’s Pole. He connected on an 87 mph changeup to put Boston ahead 5-1.
Criswell pitches well
Cooper Criswell pitched 5-plus innings, allowing one run, four hits, one walk and five strikeouts. He threw 83 pitches (53 strikes).
He threw 32 sinkers, 29 changeups, 15 sweepers and seven cutters.
Rafaela makes another amazing catch
Rafaela made a Superman catch in the sixth inning with a runner at second base and one out. He sprinted to his left and fully extended in the air to rob Wenceel Pére whose 305-foot, 95.3 mph liner had a .720 expected batting average.
Rafaela’s grab had just a 5% catch probability.
Rafaela fired to second base to double off the runner (Matt Vierling) for an inning-ending double play.
As MLB.com’s Ian Browne pointed out, only nine such plays with a 5% catch probability or less have happened in MLB this season.
Grissom leaves game with hamstring strain
Second baseman Vaughn Grissom was removed after two innings.
The Red Sox announced he has a right hamstring strain. Grissom spent the first 32 games of the season on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.
The 23-year-old grounded out to third base to end the bottom of the second inning, then didn’t return to play the field in the third inning. Connor Wong replaced him at second base.

Enmanuel Valdez hits 2 homers as Red Sox beat Tigers 6-3 for another win in City Connect uniforms AP BOSTON (AP) Enmanuel Valdez homered twice for his first career multihomer game and drove in three runs to power the Boston Red Sox past the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Saturday.
The Red Sox improved to 32-9 - and 17-5 in the past two years - wearing their City Connect uniforms with bright yellow jerseys and powder blue lettering, numbers and hats since they were introduced in 2021.
Boston center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela made spectacular full-length diving catch on Wenceel Pérez’s shot in the right-center gap in the sixth and turned it into an inning-ending double play by throwing to second to double up Matt Vierling.
Gio Urshela hit a two-run homer over the Green Monster for Detroit, which lost for the 12th time in its last 14 games against Boston. Shortstop Javier Báez made a highlight play for the Tigers, diving to snag Reese McGuire’s grounder before throwing to first.
Valdez’s big game came a day after Rafaela also homered twice for his first career multihomer game in Boston’s 7-3 victory.
Scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth, the Red Sox pulled to a 3-1 edge after Riley Greene’s RBI single gave the Tigers the lead two batters into the game.
Valdez sent a fastball from Reese Olson (1-6) into Boston’s bullpen, tying it in the second. He hooked a two-run shot that sneaked inside the Pesky Pole, making it 5-1 in the sixth.
Coming off his worst start of the season when he gave up seven runs in four innings on Memorial Day in Baltimore, Cooper Criswell (3-2) allowed one run in five innings, striking out five with one walk.
Olson gave five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He hadn’t allowed more than one run in each of his previous six starts, posting a 0.77 ERA.
In the third, Dominic Smith’s fielder’s choice grounder drove in the go-ahead run.
McGuire’s sacrifice fly - coming on a catch that left fielder Greene made when he jumped up against a short wall in foul territory and then tumbled to the ground - made it 3-1.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Tigers: OF Mark Canha, a late scratch Friday with left hip soreness, took BP indoors Saturday. “So far, so good,” manager A.J. Hinch said about two hours before the first pitch. “The next step will be doing a little bit more activity on the field and see if he’s available (Saturday), going into (Sunday).”
Red Sox: Manager Alex Cora said OF Tyler O’Neill, on the injured list since May 26 with right knee soreness, should be back when he’s eligible to come off the IL next Wednesday. Valdez ropes two homers, proves himself as next man up June 1st, 2024 Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- Enmanuel Valdez heated up on Saturday at Fenway Park, and his timing couldn’t have been better.
A two-homer performance that included a double, three RBIs and a heads-up baserunning play to score on a sacrifice fly to shallow left came on a day Vaughn Grissom injured his right hamstring.
While Valdez started at DH in a 6-3 win by the Red Sox over the Tigers, he is likely the next man up to replace Grissom, who almost certainly will require another stint on the 10-day injured list.
Grissom, who missed the first 32 games of this season while recovering from a left hamstring strain, injured the other hammy while trying to beat out a grounder in the bottom of the second inning. The right-handed hitter was hobbling as he reached first base, and was replaced in the field by Connor Wong to start the third inning.
“[Valdez] was our starting second baseman early in the season. We liked the way he played defense, too, early in the season,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “So we'll see where we’re at. We’re going to meet now and go over a few things, and then we’ll decide what we’re going to do.”
Valdez had been recalled by the Red Sox on Wednesday when Tyler O’Neill had to go on the injured list with right knee inflammation. Saturday marked his first appearance in the starting lineup in the four days he’s been back with the club.
The left-handed hitter announced his presence with authority, unloading for a solo homer to right that left his bat at 106.4 mph and traveled a projected distance of 399 feet, landing in the Boston bullpen in right-center.
“Today was one of those days I wasn't trying to do too much,” said Valdez. “Like you all know, I had a slow start [before getting optioned to Triple-A]. For me to be able to put the ball in play and hit the ball hard was big.”
While Valdez tied the game with his shot in the second, he helped his team extend the lead in the fourth by taking advantage of the friendly Green Monster with a leadoff double that had an expected batting average of .140. And after moving to third on a fielder’s choice, Valdez made a strong read on Reese McGuire’s 214-foot foul flyout that Riley Greene made a great play on against the railing. When Greene fell down, Valdez tagged up and roared home to make it a 3-1 game.
“I was watching the play all along and saw the player tumble down so that’s when I decided to take off,” said Valdez. “And that’s one at-bat less for Reese [in the stats] and one more RBI for him. And for me to be able to help him and help the team win, that’s what I want to do every time I get the opportunity to play.”
Perhaps Valdez earned the good fortune he got in the bottom of the sixth when he wrapped one around Pesky’s Pole at an exit velocity of 86.5 mph at a projected distance of 318 feet for a two-run homer that had an expected batting average of .050 and wouldn’t have been a home run in any of MLB’s 29 other ballparks.
“I think I’ve also been hitting the ball hard, over 100 mph, and they’ve been caught,” Valdez said. “To be able to get away with one was great.”
Injuries have been a prevailing storyline for a Boston team that has withstood its barrage of medical maladies fairly well, improving to 30-29 with Saturday’s victory.
Valdez was optioned to Triple-A on May 2, one day before Grissom made his delayed debut. The Red Sox acquired Valdez and emerging rookie Wilyer Abreu at the 2022 Trade Deadline in the deal that sent Christian Vázquez to the Astros.
That trade -- made by former Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom -- appears to be a clear win.
“Valdy’s a good player. He puts together good at-bats,” said Cora. “And like I said when we sent him down, he didn't do anything wrong. He played well. When you look at numbers, he’s hitting .180, and it doesn’t feel that way. He manages the at-bat just like Wilyer and he worked on a few things down there as far as timing and staying closed and not flying open.”
While Valdez is no longer flying open, second base appears to be open, at least for the foreseeable future, and he looks ready to pounce on the opportunity.

Injuries & Moves: Grissom (right hamstring strain) likely headed to IL June 1st, 2024
MLB.com
LATEST NEWS
June 1: 2B Vaughn Grissom exits with right hamstring strain Grissom, who missed the first 32 games of the season with a left hamstring strain, injured his right hamstring running out a grounder to third base in the bottom of the second inning of Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers. While the strain was classified by manager Alex Cora as "mild," Grissom is likely headed to the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game.
Grissom was hobbling as he crossed the bag at first base. When the Red Sox went out for defense in the top of the third inning, Connor Wong replaced Grissom at second base. In his first 23 games for Boston, Grissom is hitting .148 with no homers and three RBIs.
"It’s pretty frustrating," Grissom said. "Trying to dig one out. Obviously it’s very unexpected. It just grabbed on me. I feel like I was at the light at the end of the tunnel. It sucks."
June 1: DH Masataka Yoshida takes BP, feels no pain Yoshida, who has been sidelined for over a month with a left thumb strain, took an important step when he took batting practice on the field prior to Saturday's game against the Tigers. The left-handed hitter said he was pain-free and hopes to go on a Minor League rehab assignment in the near future.
"I think we’re over the hump now and he’s going to take off," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
“I think the next step will be trying to ramp up the intensity, trying to get in more game setting situations," Yoshida added.

Why did Red Sox’ Alex Cora play Connor Wong at 2B, not Romy Gonzalez?

BOSTON — Manager Alex Cora made an interesting decision Saturday when Vaughn Grissom left after two innings because of a right hamstring strain.
Cora replaced Grissom at second base with catcher Connor Wong who began the game on the bench with Reese McGuire starting behind the dish.
Wong played the final seven innings at second base in the Red Sox’ 6-3 win over the Tigers here at Fenway Park.
Wong had played just 11 innings at second base in the majors entering Saturday. He made 24 starts (207 ⅔ innings) there in the minor leagues.
Cora was asked why he chose Wong instead of backup infielder Romy Gonzalez or someone else. Cora indicated he was managing with a short bench with players potentially banged up. The bench included Wong, Gonzalez, Garrett Cooper and Rob Refsnyder.
Gonzalez and Cooper last played Thursday. Refsnyder last played Friday (yesterday).
“We’ve got a few things going,” Cora said. “Like I said yesterday, we’re not going to share everything that is going on with us. But we needed Wong today at second.”
Grissom is expected to be placed on the injured list Sunday. First baseman/third baseman Bobby Dalbec (who also has played right field at Triple-A Worcester) and catcher Tyler Heineman are the only two minor league position player options already on the 40-man roster.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK In midst of disappointing season, Red Sox’ Vaughn Grissom frustrated by latest hamstring injury By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated June 1, 2024, 8:14 p.m.
It hasn’t shown up in his statistics, but the Red Sox were feeling hopeful about Vaughn Grissom. His at-bats were better, as was the exit velocity of the balls he put in play.
“Matter of time,” manager Alex Cora said Saturday before the Red Sox played the Tigers.
Now Grissom has had another setback, leaving a 6-3 victory in the second inning with what was described as a “mild” strain of his right hamstring.
“100 percent,” Cora said when asked if the Sox would have to make a roster move because of the injury.
The injury occurred when Grissom tried to beat out a grounder to third base. He stepped gingerly into the dugout then went back to the clubhouse.
“It’s frustrating,” Grissom said. “Trying to dig one out and something like that happens.”
Grissom opened the season on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. He returned May 3 and has hit .148 over 23 games with no home runs, three RBIs, and a .367 OPS since.
“Try and get back as soon as possible,” Grissom said. “Taking it day by day. Keep positive and kind of ride it out.”
Connor Wong, who was getting a day off from catching, finished the game at second base.
Cora was cryptic when asked why the Sox didn’t use infielder Romy Gonzalez instead.
“We’ve got a few things going,” Cora said. “Like I said, we’re not going to share everything that is going on with us.”
Enmanuel Valdez, who started 26 games at second base earlier this season before being demoted to Triple A, also is available. Valdez was 3 for 4 with a double, two homers, and three RBIs on Saturday.
“We’ll see,” Cora said. Yoshida gets in the swing
Masataka Yoshida has not played for the Sox since April 28 because of a strained left thumb.
It doesn’t seem likely that will change any time soon. But Yoshida is making progress.
Yoshida took batting practice on the field Saturday for the first time since his injury. After some careful swings, Yoshida took some harder cuts and pronounced himself satisfied.
“Felt good,” he said via team translator Yutaro Yamaguchi. “I was able to hit pain free. That was something I accomplished today.”
Saturday was only the third time Yoshida swung the bat since he strained his thumb. Over time, he’ll face game-speed pitches from machines, then work his way up to facing pitchers before going on a minor league rehabilitation assignment.
“The next step will be trying to ramp it up, the intensity. Trying to hit in more game-setting situations,” Yoshida said.
Yoshida will have a better sense of when he can return once he starts playing in the minor league games. He’s not putting a timetable on it.
“With Masa it’s just how he feels,” Cora said. “I think we’re over the hump now and now we just take off . . . As far as batting practice, it should be every day.”
The Sox athletic trainers are working on finding a thumb pad that will give Yoshida more comfort when he hits.
Yoshida has hit .287 with 17 homers, 83 RBIs, and a .777 OPS in 164 games for the Sox since agreeing to a five-year, $90 million contract before the 2023 season.
Yoshida was the primary designated hitter to open the season. Since his injury, Red Sox DHs have hit .204 with a .598 OPS. The Sox have rotated eight players through the spot since Yoshida went on the injured list.
Bello next
Brayan Bello is scheduled to face Casey Mize in the series finale Sunday afternoon. The righthander is 3-1 in four starts since coming off the injured list May 12 but has a 5.66 ERA and pitched only 20⅔ innings. Cora thought Bello took a step forward “stuff-wise” in his last start when he struck out seven over five innings against the Orioles on Tuesday. “We’re getting to the point where the slider is becoming a weapon. Velocity was up in the last one. The changeup was great,” Cora said. “I do believe he’s in a great place.” . . . Triston Casas took ground balls before the game. But he’s not yet close to swinging a bat. Casas still feels discomfort in his rib cage while doing activities in the gym . . . Garrett Whitlock, who had season-ending elbow surgery in Alabama on Thursday, was back at Fenway and spent some time around his teammates . . . The 12 seventh graders who make up the latest class of Red Sox Scholars were introduced before the game. They came from Brighton, Chelsea, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Revere, South Boston and the South End. The team also celebrated the 17 members of the program who graduated high school or college this year. The Red Sox Foundation provides selected students from Boston public or charter schools with $10,000 college scholarships along with academic, professional and social guidance.

Brayan Bello, Red Sox go for series win over Tigers FLM
The Boston Red Sox aim for their third straight win when they cap a four-game series against the visiting Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
After Ceddanne Rafaela recorded his first career two-homer game on Friday, Enmanuel Valdez -- who was just recalled from Triple-A Worcester -- turned the trick in a 3-for-4 day. He also doubled, scored three runs and drove in three ini Saturday's 6-3 win.
The Red Sox overcame a first-inning deficit with a 10-hit attack and moved back above the .500 mark for the season.
Valdez set the tone in a much-needed situation, especially with Vaughn Grissom going down with a hamstring strain Saturday and landing on the injured list.
"He's a good player. He puts up good at-bats," Cora said of Valdez. "Like I said when we sent him down, he didn't do anything wrong. ... When you look at the numbers, he's hitting .180, but it doesn't feel that way. He manages the at-bat just like (Wilyer Abreu). ... Overall, a good (game)."
Brayan Bello (6-2, 4.18 ERA) looks to continue his winning run on the mound for the Red Sox. He earned his second straight win and fifth in six starts on Tuesday in Baltimore, striking out seven across five innings. He allowed three runs in the first inning and none thereafter.
"I like to come out with an aggressive mindset as opposed to being relaxed," Bello said after that start. "I feel like when I come in relaxed, things don't go the way that I want them to."
However, Bello has not pitched at Fenway Park since May 12, when he held the Washington Nationals to two runs on four hits in five innings. His last three starts have been away from home.
The 25-year-old right-hander has made just one previous start against Detroit, and it didn't go well. He took the loss last Aug. 12 after allowing four runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Following Saturday's defeat, the Tigers have lost three of their last four games since a four-game win streak and have dropped six of their last seven on the road.
However, Gio Urshela's two-run home run in the ninth inning extended Detroit's streak of consecutive games with a homer to eight.
"We did get a few good swings. Matt Vierling swung the bat very well," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said, noting Vierling's two doubles. "But not enough in this park when you've got to create offense."
Tigers righty Casey Mize (1-3, 4.71) is winless in six starts since beating the Twins in Minnesota on April 21. On May 26 against Toronto, he gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings for a no-decision in a 14-11 Detroit win. He allowed eight hits and two walks.
Five days earlier, Mize was whacked for nine hits and six runs in just 1 2/3 innings at Kansas City.
Mize is 0-1 with a 4.09 career ERA in two starts covering 11 innings against Boston. Both starts came in 2021. He missed most of 2022 and all of 2023 following Tommy John and back surgeries.
On Saturday, Hinch also offered an update on outfielder Kerry Carpenter's lumbar spine stress fracture. However, there is no update on his return.
"There's a lot of unknowns still in terms of timetable, which is why we don't put one on it," Hinch said. "We're going to kind of go week-by-week with him and continue to check in on what the best next step is for him."
